  1. Persephone Camellia wasn't "in costume" yet when she knocked on the door to Betsy's office. She hadn't had to ask where to pick Betsy up. Not that they'd socialized much yet, but not only had she never been to Betsy's apartment, she wasn't sure if Betsy even had one, or if she just slept (or passed out) in her office every night. When Betsy opened the door, she was greeted first by an outstretched hand holding a cardboard Café Chupacabra to-go cup, and then, behind it, a smiling blonde woman with tired eyes, but nowhere near as tired as Betsy's own. "Drip coffee with three espresso shots. If it doesn't kill you, then it should bring you back to life. They call it a 'Dead-Eye', but I'm thinking of lobbying them to rename it 'The Betsy'." Next she held up a small paper bag with the tip of a croissant poking out the top. "But whatever you call it, it's not a good idea to drink one on an empty stomach." Once relieved of Betsy's drink, Camellia took another sip of her own, a flavored latte that would have been much more gentle than Betsy's fare if it weren't for the shot of custom chemical fertilizer Camellia had added after the fact. It made the drink lethally toxic for anyone else, but for Camellia, it was the only way she'd found to replicate the effects caffeine had on her before her transformation into a plant hybrid; it was simply what made coffee COFFEE again. She led Betsy out to her car, a BMW Series 7 luxury sedan. "It was a gift," Camellia had said back when Betsy first saw it, as she said often, self-consciously, but truthfully, in response to questions no one had asked and accusations no one had made, anytime a manifestation of her pampered upbringing leaked through the down-to-Earth self-sufficient adult life she still had a long way to go in crafting for herself. She gave Betsy all the details she had on the way to the City Morgue. "I probably over-reacted, I know, but I reckon better safe than sorry." She parked a few blocks away from the morgue. "Not much competition on the street at this time a day. Still, being all 'official' does come with perks." She reached across Betsy's lap to pull an emergency vehicle parking permit from the glove compartment, which she hung from the rear-view mirror. "With this out, you can park literally ANYWHERE inside city limits without being towed or cited. I try not to abuse the privilege, but it sure does take the edge off of city driving. Anyway, time to get into character." She glanced around to make sure she wasn't being watched, and, satisfied, began her transformation from Camellia to Persephone. Under her clothes, lavender-hued leaves, vines, and patches of moss sprouted up from her skin in strategic places to form a costume, while chlorophyll flooded her skin, turning it a bright, rich green. New pigments leaked into her eyes and hair, changing them from blue and gold to violet and indigo. Her hair, already falling down past her waist, extended another several feet until it brushed the backs of her ankles. A single tug removed her dress completely; she'd long ago replaced all the clasps with magnets to facilitate the quick removal. She tossed it over her shoulder into the back seat. The leaves and vines growing out of her legs and feet wrapped around her shoes as well, the only item of clothing she now wore which she hadn't grown from her own flesh. She pulled down the sun visor and studied her reflection for a few moments. More pigments were released into her skin on her face, staining her lips and eyelids with various shades of purple, and her trademark sunflower sprouted up from under the hair on the side of her head into full bloom. She wore no mask, but to anyone not intimately familiar with both women, Persephone was now nearly unrecognizable as Camellia. The transformation complete, she quickly exited the vehicle and made her way to the medical examiner's building.
  2. Mister Strix Gather Information DC10: "Mister Strix" is an urban myth. Just some graffiti and a spooky story Bedlam's scumbags tell each other. DC15: Mister Strix is real. Wears all white. Shows up out of nowhere and vanishes without a trace. He fights crime all over Bedlam City, especially when it involves the Mafia. He's the one guy in Bedlam who never takes a cut for himself. He flushes your product and burns your cash. A character who actively uses their Gather Information skill on Mister Strix will not obtain any of the following information unless they make a point of searching for potentially restricted information. If they do, then they also need to make a contested Gather Information check against Strix. If he wins, then he will be alerted to their inquiries. They can avoid the contested check by taking a -20 penalty to their original Gather Information checks for a Discrete Inquiry (or if the have the relevant challenge feat). A character using the Well-Informed feat upon first meeting Strix or hearing of him may obtain the following information with a high enough Gather Information check, but since that represents prior knowledge, it will not trigger a contested check against him. DC20: He only comes out at night. They say it gets cold when he shows up. He's stronger and faster than any man should be. Bullets go right through him like he wasn't there. There's no security he can't beat, and nowhere you can hide from him. The cops have nothing on him. No pics, no video, no prints, no DNA. The guy's a ghost. DC25: Mister Strix isn't a ghost. He's a vampire. He drinks blood. The following information cannot be obtained with a Well-Informed check. It can only be obtained with an active use of the Gather Information skill. DC30: Mister Strix is a member of the Twilight Lodge, a secret club of Bedlam city vigilantes and mystics. DC35: Mister Strix displays all the signs of an ancient vampire bloodline called the Schattenblut, or "Shadow-Blood". They have a strong connection to the Schattenwelt, even stronger than most of the undead. He isn't just a member of the Twilight Lodge, he's the president. DC40: Mister Strix is Doctor Gaetano "Guy" Giordano. He died several years ago, and he came back wrong. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Knowledge (Arcane Lore) DC20: The few eyewitness accounts and rumors regarding Mister Strix indicate that he shows several signs of being some sort of supernatural creature. He seems to be repelled by religious symbols, silver (which used to be thought of as solid light), and herbs like garlic and wolf's bane. He's never been seen in daylight. He leaves cold spots in his passing. Some say his footsteps make no sound and leave no prints, and he has no shadow. DC25: Mister Strix is definitely a vampire. He has almost every tell in the book. DC30: Mister Strix displays all the signs of an ancient vampire bloodline called the Schattenblut, or "Shadow-Blood". They have a strong connection to the Schattenwelt, even stronger than most of the undead. Knowledge (Streetwise) DC10: "Mister Strix" is an urban myth. DC15: Doctor Giordano was born in Bedlam City in 1981. He graduated high school in 1999, university in 2003, and medical school in 2007. He worked at Bedlam General Hospital briefly before dying in 2012. He grew up on Stark Hill. He died at home, in bed, of some undetermined illness. He left behind a widow, Adriana Aparo, also a doctor at Bedlam General. DC20: Guy Giordano and Adriana Aparo met when they both attended university and medical school in Chicago. They completed their emergency medicine residencies in Detroit, then spent a year with Doctors Without Borders in Libya and the Congo. They had just gotten married and bought a house a few months before he died. She remarried a few years later. She has a daughter with her new husband. Guy's younger brother Rafael was a Catholic priest. He was violently murdered just a few days after Guy passed away. They're buried next to each other. Guy's family is in deep with the Bedlam Mafia. DC25: Rafael Giordano was murdered right on top of his older brother's grave, the night after he was interred. Guy Giordano father is one of "Dapper Donny" Scarpia's "capos", his older brother is a made man and his father's heir apparent, and his brother-in-law is a button man in a different crew who's well on his way to being made. The following information cannot be obtained with a Well-Informed check. It can only be obtained with an active use of the Gather Information skill. DC30: Accounts of Guy's illness and death are consistent with folklore about demonic possession and attacks by supernatural creatures such as succubi and vampires. His grave is empty. There's a casket buried there, but there's nothing in it. DC35: Guy Giordano is a vampire. After he died, he dug himself out of his own grave, killed his brother in a feeding frenzy on the spot, then disappeared. DC40: Guy Giordano is the vigilante Mister Strix. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Knowledge (Life Sciences) or Medicine DC10: Guy Giordano and Adriana Aparo were both licensed and board-certified physicians with a specialty in emergency medicine. DC15: Doctors Giordano and Aparo went to college and medical school in Chicago, and completed their residencies in Detroit. They spent a year with Doctors Without Borders, in Libya and the Congo. DC20: Doctors Giordano and Aparo both worked in the emergency room at Bedlam General Hospital. She continued working there after his death. Knowledge (Streetwise) DC10: The Giordano family are Italian-Americans who live on Stark Hill. They're probably at least friendly with the Bedlam Mafia. DC15: Guy Giordano's father, Massimo "Mo" Giordano, is part of the Bedlam City Mafia. So are his older brother, Matteo "Matt" Giordano, and his brother-in-law. DC20: The Giordano boys are part of the Scarpia family. They've all got some blood on their hands. DC25: Mo Giordano is one of at least ten "capos" working directly under "Dapper Donny" Scarpia himself. His son Matt is a made man, part of his crew and his heir apparent. Mo's son-in-law is a button-man in another capo's crew, who's going to be made any day now. Knowledge (Theology & Philosophy) DC10: Like most people on Stark Hill, the Giordano family are Catholic. DC15: Guy's younger brother, Rafael Giordano, was a Catholic priest. DC20: Rafael Giordano was violently murdered a few days after his brother passed away from some undefined illness. They're buried next to each other. DC25: Rafael Giordano was murdered right on top of his older brother's grave, the night he was interred. He wasn't just a priest. He was an elite Vatican-sponsored monster-hunter, with multiple confirmed kills. DC30: Both Rafael and his brother appear to have been murdered by vampires.
  3. Persephone Gather Information DC10: Persephone is a superhero, one of Vibora Bay's official City Defenders. She controls plants. DC15: By superhero standards, Persephone is a pacifist. She's friendly and nonthreatening. Even before she became a City Defender, she was the kind of superhero who waited for the cops and talked to reporters. She doesn't just control plants. She's at least part-plant herself. She doesn't need to breathe. When someone tries to choke or drown her, it does nothing. When she gets shot or stabbed, you can see green stuff inside her, and she doesn't bleed much, if at all. She mostly just leaks a little sap, and then her body knits itself back together. The following information cannot be obtained with a Well-Informed check. It can only be obtained with an active use of the Gather Information skill. A character who actively uses their Gather Information skill on Persephone will not obtain any of the following unless they make a point of searching for potentially restricted information. If they do, then they also need to make a contested Gather Information check against Persephone. If she wins, then she will be alerted to their inquiries. They can avoid the contested check by taking a -20 penalty to their original Gather Information checks for a Discrete Inquiry (or if the have the relevant challenge feat). DC20: Most sightings of Persephone happen in the western half of Vibora Bay. She probably lives in Weston. The New Shadows gang has the word out that they'll pay for any information about Persephone. DC25: Persephone has a secret identity. She's Doctor Camellia Blume, a local psychiatrist. She destroyed an entire pack of New Shadows affiliated vampires, and the rest of the gang wants revenge. DC30: AEGIS has been aware of Persephone the entire time she's been operating as a superhero. They always suspected her of having a secret identity, since she had no known residence or occupation. They had a handful of suspects, including Doctor Blume. But they did not consider Persephone to be a threat, and there were no open warrants for her arrest, so AEGIS only did a routine preliminary investigation into her, and they kept the results strictly internal. When she became a City Defender, her identity became a matter of (secret) record, and AEGIS was able to add that record to their own file on her. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Knowledge (Cosmology) DC30: There used to be an alternate Earth where they genetically engineered plants to form symbiotic bonds with human soldiers, turning them into biological weapons. It wasn't enough to protect them from Omega, and that dimension fell to the Terminus years ago. Persephone has the exact same powers as those hybrid super-soldiers. Knowledge (Life Sciences) DC10: Plants aren't supposed to do that! DC15: Plants are physically incapable of doing that for a dozen different reasons. Physics don't even work that way, never mind biology. DC20: Plants don't just respond to her direct commands. They dive to take the bullet when she doesn't even know she's being shot at. There's some kind of instinctive, intuitive communication happening between them, probably over an olfactory or psychic medium. Knowledge (Popular Culture) Decrease the DC of this check by -5 if your character lives in Vibora Bay, or if they do their research in Vibora Bay. DC10: There's a superhero in Vibora Bay called "Persephone". There's also a green-skinned plant-controller in Vibora Bay. They might be the same person. DC15: Persephone is a superhero, one of Vibora Bay's official City Defenders. She controls plants. DC20: By superhero standards, Persephone is a pacifist. She's friendly and nonthreatening. Even before she became a City Defender, she was the kind of superhero who waited for the cops and talked to reporters. DC25: Persephone doesn't just control plants. She's at least part-plant herself. She mostly just leaks a little sap, and then her body knits itself back together. Knowledge (Streetwise) DC20: The New Shadows gang has the word out that they'll pay for information about Persephone. DC25: Persephone destroyed a whole pack of vampires affiliated with the New Shadows. The entire gang has standing orders to capture or kill her. They haven't put a price on her head because they want to be the ones to take it. Knowledge (Theology & Philosophy) DC10: Persephone was a figure from Greek mythology. DC15: In Greco-Roman myth, Persephone has something to do with plants, and winter. DC20: Persephone was the daughter of Demeter (Ceres) and Zeus (Jupiter). Hades (Pluto) kidnapped her and tricked her into marrying him and becoming queen of the Underworld. She spends half the year with her mother on Mount Olympus, but she has to spend the other half in the Underworld. Demeter's grief at her daughter's absence is what causes winter. It's unlikely that the superhero of the same name is directly related to her in any way. Camellia Blume Gather Information DC10: Camellia Blume is a self-employed, fully licensed and board-certified psychiatrist living in Vibora Bay. Her practice in Weston is publicly listed. DC15: Camellia was born in Vibora Bay in 1989. She grew up in Easton, where the rest of her family still lives. She went to private school for primary and secondary education, then attended college at Sinclair University, and medical school at the University of Florida in Vibora Bay. She graduated high school in 2007, got her Bachelor's degree in 2011, and got her M.D. in 2015. She worked as a model in both America and Europe from ages 12-26. She was a cheerleader and frequent beauty pageant contestant (always at least a semifinalist) from middle school up through college. In high school, she was homecoming queen, prom queen, class president, and captain of her cheerleading squads. In college, she was a vice-president of their chapter of the Omega Beta Gamma sorority. She has a twin brother, who's married to one of her sorority sisters, with two children. Her parents are also both Sinclair alumni. Her mother was a cheerleader and her father played football. Her mother runs her own interior design firm. Her father and brother are both executives at Vibora Petroleum. Doctor Blume's practice charges her patients on a sliding scale based on their income, and accepts every insurance provider. DC20: Doctor Blume's practice is just her, working out of a rented apartment. Not only is she not charging what she's worth, but on some of her patients, she might not even be breaking even. Blume's parents own over a hundred restaurant franchise and rental properties across Vibora Bay and north Florida. Her father was an engineer at Vibora Petroleum before moving up to management. The lady's squeaky clean. She's never been sued, never been arrested, never gotten so much as a speeding ticket. Her parents never even grounded her when she was a kid. Why are you even asking about her? DC25: Doctor Camellia Blume is secretly the superhero Persephone, one of Vibora Bay's official City Defenders. DC30: AEGIS had always suspected Doctor Blume of being Persephone, but since she was not considered a threat and there were no open warrants for her arrest, they only did a routine preliminary investigation, which was kept strictly internal. When she became a City Defender, her identity became a matter of (secret) record, and AEGIS was able to add that record to their own file on her. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Knowledge (Behavioral Sciences) or Medicine DC10: Camellia Blume is a psychiatrist, fully licensed and board-certified. She runs her own publicly-listed practice. She charges her patients on a sliding scale based on their income, and she accepts every insurance provider. DC15: Camellia Blume earned her M.D. from the University of Florida Vibora Bay, one of the top medical schools in the country. She completed her residency at their teaching hospital. DC20: Camellia Blume graduated from UFVB with honors. DC25: Not only is Doctor Blume not charging what she's worth, but on some of her patients, she might not even be breaking even. Knowledge (Business) DC10: Camellia Blume is a self-employed psychiatrist. Her practice is publicly listed. She charges on a sliding scale. DC15: Camellia's father and twin brother are both executives at Vibora Petroleum. DC20: Camellia's mother runs an interior design firm. They mostly do theme parks, museums, and private residences. Her father started at VP as an engineer before moving to management. DC25: Camellia's parents own over a hundred different residential properties and restaurant franchises throughout northern Florida. Not only is Doctor Blume not charging what she's worth, but on some of her patients, she might not even be breaking even. Knowledge (Popular Culture) DC10: You've seen that woman's face before. DC15: That woman is a model. You've seen that face before in a print advertisement somewhere, in a magazine or a newspaper, or on a billboard. DC20: That's Camellia Blume. She used to be a model and a cheerleader, and she won a bunch of beauty pageants. DC25: That's Camellia Blume. She was a model from 2001-2015, a cheerleader at Sinclair University from 2007-2011, a cheerleader for the University of Florida Gators from 2011-2015, and a runner-up in the Miss Florida pageant for three years in a row, from 2008-2010.
  4. Octoman Gather Information DC10: There's a superhero in Freedom City called "Octoman". Most people haven't heard of him, but the kids like him. DC15: Octoman is really strong, and he has tentacles. He can stick to walls, like a bug. He has a vlog, and a big mouth. DC20: Octoman is also superhumanly tough and agile, and he has some limited shapeshifting powers. His blood is purple, so he might be some kind of alien or mutant. He acts and sounds young. He's probably a teenager, or a very immature college student. A character who actively uses their Gather Information skill on Octoman will not obtain any of the following information unless they make a point of searching for potentially restricted information. If they do, then they also need to make a contested Gather Information check against Octoman; with his Online Research feat, he can use his Computers skill for this check. If he wins, then he will be alerted to their inquiries. They can avoid the contested check by taking a -20 penalty to their original Gather Information checks for a Discrete Inquiry (or if the have the relevant challenge feat). A character using the Well-Informed feat upon first meeting Octoman or hearing of him may obtain the following information with a high enough Gather Information check, but since that represents prior knowledge, it will not trigger a contested check against him. DC25: Octoman is sighted in the West End twice as often as any other neighborhood in Freedom City. He probably lives there. The following information cannot be obtained with a Well-Informed check. It can only be obtained with an active use of the Gather Information skill. DC30: Close observation of his public interactions reveals that Octoman is probably severely hearing-impaired, and may be completely deaf. He doesn't react when people talk to him unless he's facing them, and even then, he seems to miss things, and not just because he won't stop talking long enough for anyone to get a word in edgewise. DC35: Octoman's blood is radioactive. It's not dangerous, but it does set off Geiger counters. DC40: Octoman is secretly Ben Wang, a teenager whose parents live in the West End. Ben's powers are an accidental by-product of Goanna's mad science. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Knowledge (Life Sciences) DC25: Most vertebrates have red blood, because it contains hemoglobin, which contains iron. Many arthropods and mollusks (including cephalopods) have blood with hemocyanin instead, which is blue, because it contains copper. Hemocyanin works better to keep their bodies oxygenated at cold temperatures. Mollusks and arthropods who live in deep water also have thick, syrupy blood like Octoman's, because of the surrounding fluid pressure, and multiple hearts in order to keep that thicker blood pumping. Octoman's blood is purple, which suggests that it may contain both hemoglobin and hemocyanin, and his blood is both thick and under high pressure. Even his small cuts create a ridiculous spray. This adaptation could allow him to function equally well under water and on dry land. He may be a true human/cephalopod hybrid. Knowledge (Popular Culture) DC10: There's a superhero in Freedom City called "Octoman". He's probably a teenager, or a very immature college guy. DC25: Octoman's favorite superhero is Geckoman. He talks about "The Gecks" all the time. Knowledge (Streetwise) DC20: Octoman's made some enemies. Goanna and Webmaster both talk about him a lot. Webmaster will pay big bucks for information about Octoman. DC25: Octoman helped Bombshell kick Webmaster's ass and sent him up the river. Webmaster wants payback. DC30: Goanna claims he created both Octoman and Webmaster. Knowledge (Theology & Philosophy) DC20: Octoman's vlogs contain occasional references, greetings, and sentiments which indicate that he's probably Jewish. Benicio "Ben" Wang Gather Information DC10: Ben Wang is a teenager living in Freedom City. He's black or Latino or something. DC15: Ben was born in Brooklyn in 2003. He was still a small child when his family moved to Freedom City's West End. His family is Jewish. His mother is black or Latino or something. She works as a public defender. His father is white or Asian, hard to tell. He runs a bakery/deli which serves an eclectic mix of Central European and Southeast Asian food. Ben's primary interests are computer programming and superheroes. A character who actively uses their Gather Information skill on Ben will not obtain any of the following information unless they make a point of searching for potentially restricted information. If they do, then they also need to make a contested Gather Information check against Ben; with his Online Research feat, he can use his Computers skill for this check. If he wins, then he will be alerted to their inquiries. They can avoid the contested check by taking a -20 penalty to their original Gather Information checks for a Discrete Inquiry (or if the have the relevant challenge feat). A character using the Well-Informed feat upon first meeting Ben or hearing of him may obtain the following information with a high enough Gather Information check, but since that represents prior knowledge, it will not trigger a contested check against him. DC20: Ben Wang went to Hebrew school twice a week until he was 16. Most of Ben's family still lives back in Brooklyn. His mother is an Afro-Latina whose family is from Puerto Rico. His father is half-Filipino, half-Ashkenazi. His whole family is Jewish, except his paternal grandmother, who's a Filipina Catholic. Ben is the world's biggest Geckoman fan. His username on every site is "Geckofan", and he runs the most exhaustively detailed Geckoman fan site on the web. Ben went to public school until his sophomore year, when he somehow transferred to the super-exclusive Claremont Academy. There are billionaires who can't get their kids into that place. DC25: Ben is deaf, or at least, severely hearing impaired. He reads lips, he signs, and he has a smartphone and smartwatch app which uses vibrations and flashing lights to alert him to loud noises. The following information cannot be obtained with a Well-Informed check. It can only be obtained with an active use of the Gather Information skill. DC30: Ben's grades in public school were good, but not good enough to get into an elite prep school like Claremont. And his family doesn't have the money to buy his way in. So not only did they pass up thousands of better applicants, but they also gave him a scholarship. It doesn't add up. DC35: Ben Wang isn't just a programming enthusiast. He's a world-class hacker. He's never harmed anyone or stolen anything, but he's broken into plenty of restricted systems. DC40: Ben Wang is secretly the superhero Octoman. Ben's powers are an accidental by-product of Goanna's mad science. An appropriate Profession sub-skill can be substituted for any of these skills. Computers or Knowledge (Technology) DC15: Ben Wang is a hobbyist programmer. He likes to talk shop, and he knows his stuff. DC25: Ben Wang is a world-class hacking prodigy. A lesser hacker would be in prison after some of the crap he's pulled. But he never steals anything or hurts anyone. Knowledge (Business) DC20: Ben's father runs a bakery/deli in the West End. DC25: Ben's father's place prepares an eclectic mix of Central European and Southeast Asian food. Knowledge (Civics) DC20: Ben's mother is a public defender working for the Freedom City district attorney's office. DC25: Ben's mother is a rare thing, a Freedom City resident with anti-superhero sentiments. Knowledge (Theology & Philosophy) DC20: Ben Wang's family is culturally Jewish but not particularly devout. DC25: Ben Wang went to Hebrew school in Freedom City. His paternal grandmother is Catholic, the one outlier in his family.
  5. Octoman When Octoman first entered the temple, a cocky grin spread across his face. Just two guards? Please. I could do this with my eyes closed. Even freaky fish-people gotta breathe. Give 'em each a faceful of tentacles, they won't know what hit 'em, choke 'em 'till they're out, grab the hostages, home free. Then a third, bigger, freakier fish-person came in, and his grin flagged a little. Oh hey, that one has tentacles too. It's cool, it's all good, I can still...wait, is she here to EAT the hostages?! But when the fourth, freakiest fish of all appeared, the giant many-mouthed slug-lamprey THING, and started eating the cage, Octoman lost his cool. Oh HELL NO! I don't just hafta stop the fish-people from eating the PEOPLE-people, I gotta stop the OTHER fish-things from eating the fish-people! This place is THE WORST! The Sensational Cephalopod frantically swam up toward the temple ceiling to get the best angle he possibly could before the slug-monster finished unwrapping its tasty treats, and then he unleashed all ten of his tentacles toward the Deep Ones and the other predator. His tentacles stretched as they surged forward, extending until he had hundreds of feet of sucker-lined flesh to wrap around each of them. The exertion disrupted his camouflage. The pigmentation of his skin still matched the coloration of the surrounding terrain, but it was offset enough that the outline of his body was now clearly visible. "SORRY!" he shouted in English, assuming none of them could understand a word. "This restaurant's booked for a private event! Y'all are gonna hafta get dinner somewhere else!"
  6. Octoman Ben bent down and mimed pulling a mask out of his pocket and putting it on, though anyone standing nearby could see that he merely shapeshifted. When he stood back up, he was taller and bulkier, and appeared to be wearing a mask made from patches of human skin stitched together. He held his arms above his head and waved them in a comically exaggerated style as he ran toward Astrid at half-speed. "RAAARRR! Y'know, most people think it was just another trashy exploitation film, but it's actually a symbolic statement about the breakdown of post-World-War-Two American ideals about capitalism and the nuclear family model in the face of a more cynical post-Vietnam-War, post-Nixon reality." Ben knelt down again, "removed his mask," and stood back up at his natural, diminished height and weight. "Yeah, kidding, exactly! I mean, not about the mutated radioactive poisonous animals running around free in the sewers. That part's legit. They still haven't found most of 'em. We're talkin' the little shy guys, y'know? Snakes, spiders, that kinda thing. Like, most animals that can beat you in a straight-up fistfight don't HAVE to evolve poison in the FIRST place. It's the scrawny NERDS who cook up venom so they'll stop getting stuffed into their own lockers. But the me-eating-people part, yeah, that's a goof." Ben's shoulders slumped a little and he frowned. Damn. I miss new music. I mean, yeah, I got the app, but it's just not the same. Still better than nothing, I guess. He sprang back up and waved at Astrid. "Yo, hey, toss me a link or email me a copy or something. I got an app for that." He tapped on his own phone a few times, then held it up for her to see. It was muted, but playing a song, and vibrating with varying degrees of intensity along with the music. "Works best if it's heavy on the bass, 'cause, y'know, OBVIOUSLY." Ben's eyes narrowed. He tapped Astrid and Heroditus on their shoulders. "Hey, anyone else see that?" He pointed at the building. "Some dude creepin' around. I'm gonna go take a sniff. B.R.B."
  7. Dirge Dirge's eyes widened for a moment at Bliss's taunts. But then he laughed, and elbowed B'ka's. "You SEE, Cousin? The squid-waif KNOWS, even if we are gentle, even WITH the bionic enhancements I can see as CLEARLY as the COLOR of MY OWN WOOL, that she is too FRAGILE to take part in our rutting without risk of SEVERE injury. But she has A WARRIOR'S PRIDE, so she HIDES her shame behind BRAVADO! A less SEASONED warrior, one lacking my CUNNING INSTINCTS, would be FOOLED by her ruse, mayhap even LURED into A DUEL! Instead, I merely REJOICE that A WARRIOR'S HONOR no longer COMPELS me to copulate with some HAIRLESS EGG-HATCHED FEATHERWEIGHT. And DESPITE her FEEBLE INSULTS, she earns another measure of my RESPECT, for it is what I would do in her stead." "But the squid-waif asks good questions. ARE there HOSTAGES held captive inside this fortress? Is there BOOTY to be recovered? If NOT, then I could simply crash a few ships into it from orbit, or an asteroid if there are any nearby, and be DONE with it. I...may need help with the math. To make sure I don't use something large enough to trigger an extinction-level impact. Or, if you prefer SUBTLETY, then assuming there was sufficient metal involved in the construction of this fortress, I could simply tear it free from the mountain and throw IT into orbit. Either way, the problem is solved."
  8. Camellia's got +10 in Craft (Artistic), so she can take 10 and prepare a DC20 meal, "moderately complex". If Marcus looked up that wine she mentioned in their DMs, he'll find that this particular vintage runs around $400-$500 a bottle. The "ethics" she mentioned refer to the fact that the ducks traditionally used for the dish she prepared are foie gras.
  9. Persephone Camellia was already up and about, putting the finishing touches on a few things, when she heard the knocking. She slid her apron up and off and onto its hook in the kitchen, turned out the light, and ran over to the door. She stopped short of opening it, closing her eyes for a couple seconds and taking some deep breaths. Then she opened the door, forcing herself to do it slowly. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: He cleans up real nice. She looked Marcus up and down, and when her eyes rose to meet his, she stopped suppressing the ear-to-ear smile that had been trying to take over her face all evening. The interior of the house was lit by a fireplace and an assortment of candles. The illumination, while dim, was enough for Marcus to make out planters sitting or hanging in at least a dozen places, each one of them overflowing with an assortment of flowers. The woman standing before Marcus was somehow simultaneously a colleague he'd met dozens of times, and also a total stranger. A simple change of clothing and pigmentation shouldn't have made her look so different, but it did. The facial features, the voice, the way she stood and moved, it was all the same. Camellia's skin was a pale pink instead of a rich green, and the violet hues decorating Persephone's face had been replaced with lips and eyelids painted a bright, bold red and a subtle, understated gold, respectively. The eyes looking out from under those bronzed lids were ice-blue instead of violet, but they were no less striking. Camellia's hair was platinum blonde instead of royal purple, and it only fell as far as her buttocks instead of her ankles, but it was the same wavy style. There was even a flower in the same place on one side, though this one was red silk rose attached to a hair clip, rather than a sunflower growing out of her scalp. The flower matched her clothes, a clingy crimson long-sleeved sweater-dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline that went down to just above her knees, where it gave way to sheer black stockings and knee-high zip-up black leather boots with four-and-a-half inch block heels that left her a mere half-inch shorter than Marcus. She'd traded out the usual pearl earrings for a pair of large gold hoops. "Hey there, Cowboy!" She hugged him, again restraining herself from doing it quite as quickly or as tightly as she would have preferred. "Glad you could make it. You're just in time." She gave him a quick peck on the cheek as she pulled away and slid to the side to make room for his entrance. "Come on in before you let all the bought air out. I hope you didn't have trouble finding the place. I know the houses around here all look alike." She glanced at the bouquet in his hand and her eyes lit up a little more. "Well my goodness, don't you look as fine as peach fuzz. Nice color choice, we match! Are those for me? Aw, thank you!" High marks for reading comprehension. "I'll grab a vase. Those will be the perfect centerpiece." She turned to the side, waving a hand to gesture behind where she'd been standing, toward the space where the living room they were standing in transitioned into a dining room with little between them to distinguish where one ended and the other began. "Make yourself at home! Coat rack's right behind you if anything needs hanging, restroom's on the left if you need to freshen up." On her way back to the kitchen, Camellia grabbed a remote control and pressed a button. Soft music began to fill the house, strings and woodwind at first, then a woman singing in French. She returned to the table with a crystal vase in-hand. She took the flowers from Marcus, closed her eyes, and smiled wide again as she inhaled deeply. The flowers moved of their own volition, their stems bending and curling toward her face, the petals opening slightly wider. When she gingerly slid them down into the water, they returned to their original configuration. The slices of seared, fatty duck breast fanned out across the two plates looked more like medium-rare roast beef at first glance. Each one was surrounded by sliced mushrooms and some sort of leafy green vegetable, and it was all topped off with some kind of sauce which smelled of garlic and at least half a dozen other spices. "Hope you got plenty of room in the ol' bread basket." She playfully pinched his massive bicep as she took a seat perpendicular to his own at the dinner table. "Can't imagine you get muscles like that without working up an appetite. It's not the most ethically sourced dish in the world, I know. I certainly never would have bought it on my own. But it was a gift, and it seemed like a waste to just throw it out." She popped the cork on a bottle of red wine and poured each of them a glass. "Also a gift, another thing I'd never go out and buy for myself, but hey, we're celebrating." Then she unscrewed the top from a glass dropper vial and pinched a whole capful of blue fluid into her own wine. "One of the mixed blessings of my transformation. I can shrug off most toxins, but unfortunately, that includes alcohol. Caffeine, too. I figured out which chemical fertilizers can mimic the effects, so I can spike my own drinks and hold on to a few more of the old rituals, stay that much more grounded in normalcy. Most people like us underestimate how important that is, and how much those little things can help. But that also means nobody else can drink from my glass. I wouldn't want this night to end in the emergency room." She clinked her glass against his.
  10. Persephone The green woman didn't resist the metal man's grasp. In fact, he could feel her relax into it. Persephone silently looked up into Cheval's eyes for a few moments, then turned down and to the side, resting her cheek against his chest as she hugged him tightly. The giant vines ceased their thrashing, though the basement wall which once held the pentagram and the mocking face had already been smashed to rubble. Persephone looked up from her embrace with Cheval, but she didn't break it yet. "I guess it was silly to hope that slapping the mouth off its face would shut it up, but you know me, ever the optimist. You look like you're feeling better. Glad to see it." Persephone eased out of Cheval's arms and slowly turned toward the two new arrivals. She smiled weakly at Torque. "There you are, Sweetie. I was starting to worry that something in the house got you." Then she turned to The Woodsman and the smile fell off her face. "So who IS he talking about? WHAT is he talking about? This Thing can see inside of us, and he's showing us the worst parts of ourselves, the things we're ashamed of. He's lifting up the rocks in our souls and forcing us to look at the secrets squirming around beneath. The only defense against that is to get out in front of it. Benjamin Franklin was a notorious philanderer, but a scandal-proof one, because he had all his affairs out in the open. I can't approve of the man's conduct, but I can appreciate the tactical value. He can't use our secrets to tear us apart if we don't have any, and he can't shame us if we own up to what we've done." She moved a few steps away from everyone and held her arms in front of her, wrapping them around herself as she looked off into the darkness. "Cheval's been under the microscope from Day One. I doubt he's got any skeletons in his closet we can't read about on the gossip sites. Me, I've got a little tabloid fodder, but not much. My biggest scandal is just being 'Persephone' in the first place. I killed some vampires my first night out. It was self-defense, and I didn't know what I was doing 'till it was done, but I'd do it again. I once spent a Saturday morning at Planned Parenthood. I knew EXACTLY what I was doing then, and I'd do THAT again, too. But you can't kill what's already dead or what wasn't alive in the first place. I know that sounds like I'm splittin' a hair four ways, but it's the God's-honest truth. I'm no killer. I'm a liar, obviously, but only when the truth would do more harm than good. I never saw the point of truth for its own sake, not when all it would do is hurt people's feelings or put them in danger. But I'm not a killer, or a thief, or a cheat. I've always played fair. I never threw the first punch in a fight, or stole something that wasn't mine, at least as far as the law was concerned. I've never cheated on a man I committed myself to, or knowingly helped a man do likewise, and whenever I found out I WAS the other woman, I ended things then and there." She turned back to Cheval and Torque. "My sins are collective, not personal. If my family didn't own this plantation back in the day, then they owned one just like it. All the misery and blood and death that happened here in those days, everything that kept this Thing as fat and happy as a woodpecker in a lumberyard, well if that didn't happen on our watch then it may as well have. The whole time I was growing up, every dollar that put food on my plate and clothes on my back was soaked in blood, blood my ancestors squeezed out of yours, and I haven't come near to making up for any of it." She turned back to The Woodsman. "So what about you? It's obvious he's trying to drive a wedge between us 'cause he feeds on the drama. We're like a Real Housewives marathon and the party platter sitting in front of it, all rolled up into one. But why does he think YOU'RE the weak link in the chain? It wouldn't surprise anyone to learn that you've hunted game or killed in self-defense. Today alone you 'killed' a lot of things that were already dead. But I don't believe for a second that you ever 'murdered' anyone. So how is he twisting YOUR truth around?"

  12. Persephone Camellia's second phone, the one she kept solely for official City Defender business, blared to life, waking her from a deep sleep a couple of hours before her alarm clock was set to go off. Thursday morning was one of the worst times for something like this to happen. She had a full load of talk-therapy sessions on Thursdays. It was the most popular day of the week for that. Patients liked to lighten the emotional load right before the weekend. None of them would be happy if she had to cancel on them at the last minute. (They'd be even less happy if she charged any of them the actual going rate for her services, but that wasn't something she wanted to hold over anyone's head.) The wheels started turning in her head as she listened to the dispatcher's description of events. I suppose this COULD be super-science gone wrong, some sort of distortion of local temporal physics...but no, this has "supernatural" written all over it. Which means it's time to call in an expert. "Alright, this could be an extra-normal hazard, so let's not take any chances. Lock down the morgue and evacuate the medical examiners immediately, and get a S.W.A.T. team down there. Everybody just sit tight, nobody go back inside until I get there. I'll haul tail over, and I'll be bringing a civilian consultant with me." On her other phone, her personal phone, she dialed up the number she'd first gotten from a business card on Croczilla Night. "Hey there, Betsy, it's Persephone. Sorry I haven't been in touch lately. We should make time to grab a cup of tea soon when we're not fighting monsters. Did you get that wine and cheese basket I sent to your office around Christmas time? Listen Sweetie, I'm so sorry about the early call, but there's a ruckus down at the morgue and I hear tell it's right inside your wheelhouse. Somebody's dead, but not the right kind of dead. Can I swing by and pick you up?"

  14. Also, I'm fine with there being at least one verbal back-and-forth between Miss Grue and the guards before Octoman unleashes the tentacles, and as soon as he does that, his Passive Concealment effect will end.
  15. Since there's some amorphous shapeshifty types here, please let me know who does and doesn't have readable lips, so I know whose dialogue to ignore. Octoman will move to wherever he needs to move to line up the 100ft or 250ft cone (the Progression power feat for his area size is optional), preferably up on the ceiling or at least above everyone else, and then he will unleash his tentacles in an attempt to grab and choke everyone in the temple who is not obviously an Atlantean prisoner. Targeted Selective Area Engulf Snare effect. Attack roll: 25. Add +1 against anyone against whom he has the higher "ground," and/or +2 against anyone for whom it counts as a surprise attack. If that hits, then it's a DC20 Reflex save to avoid the Snare. If they fail, then, in addition to the usual effects, he's applying his Chokehold power feat to, among other things, prevent them from speaking.
  16. The vampires of Vibora Bay already have Persephone at the top of their hit-list, so if you want her involved, there's a ready-made reason. She's also getting a lot more action than most other VBPCs, though, so feel free to hand the spotlight to someone else if you get interest from other corners.
  17. Octoman can take 10 with Skill Mastery and hit DC25 on Notice, except for Listen checks which he fails automatically.
  18. Dirge The furry blue giant used his meaty three-fingered hands to shovel several heaping plates of salad into his snout while half-listening to The Traveller's proposal and the ongoing banter at the table. At several points during his meal, after swallowing a few bites, he would loudly regurgitate a wet, sticky clump of chewed-up vegetable matter back onto his plate, only to scoop it back into his mouth and gulp it down again, followed closely by a mug of ale drained in a single breath. "I came to this planet in search of GLORY, in victory OR death! These PETTY MISCREANTS fancy themselves CONQUERORS, but they are merely GRIST FOR THE MILL! And when they are GROUND, it is not my people's MOUTHS they will feed, but our LEGEND!" After answering The Traveller's offer to the table, Dirge made one of his own. "Would any of you care to engage in the traditional rutting and grooming this night? I do not wish to give false hope to those of you capable of bearing children. The DNA of lesser races has always proven too weak to mix with the PURE UNFETTERED MIGHT of the Fryxus. Not that it should be of any concern, since copulation between comrades is for bonding and release. Reproduction is for one's mate. But I have found this a distinction many less-enlightened peoples have trouble understanding. Still, if any of you desire release upon the eve of battle, my flesh is available."
  19. Dirge Dirge laughed and slapped B'ka on the back. "INDEED, Cousin B'ka, why THIS VERY DAY some flesh-eating FILTH dared insult my honor, forcing me to prove that this rack is not merely decorative! My prowess in battle is almost a CURSE, having left me so devoid of REAL SCARS. But YOU, Cousin B'ka, YOUR dismemberment announces to your enemies, 'DO YOUR WORST! For I have ALREADY suffered its like, and GREATER!' Truly the gods have marked you with their favor." For a few moments, his orange eyes narrowed and the smile vanished from his face. "But those same blows to the head which robbed you of your horns also seem to have damaged your HEARING. I am not the DIRGE of the Khan, but his DOOM. It is the mighty herds of THE FRYXUS whose funeral song I sing WITH EVERY BREATH THE KHAN AND THE IMPOTENT WRETCHES WHO SERVE HIM FAIL TO STEAL FROM ME!" By the end of the sentence he was screaming at the roof rather than B'ka, having seemingly forgotten that he was having a conversation with the Hapisian at all. Dirge's eyes widened and his mouth fell open. "You...you had a HEALTHY fleece...SHORN from your skin?!" He sighed, shook his head, and rested a hand upon the Lor's shoulder for a few moments. "I had NO IDEA your species was capable of SUCH sacrifice, such COMMITMENT to your herd. HAH! Like B'ka, you terrify your enemies with a GRAND BOAST! All who see you know that there is little they can do to you which you have already not done to YOURSELF!" "So be it." Dirge scooped his meager funds back into his pouch, then turned back to the bartender. "And two mineral lick bars." The Fryxian handed one of the foil-wrapped rectangles-on-sticks to B'ka, then peeled the foil from his own, revealing several layers of salt and other crystals and metals which had been crushed into grains and then compressed together, a savory treat and vital source of nutrients for an herbivore. He licked at his between gulps of beer.
  20. Dirge Kanemu met B'ka's handshake with one of his own. "Well-met, Cousin B'ka." "If the records kept by the Star-Khan's LACKEYS are accurate, I am indeed the last. I am...their DIRGE. THEIR story is now MY story, and IN my story THEY SHALL ECHO ACROSS ETERNITY long after the carrion-birds have picked my bones clean!" At the Cantina, Kanemu checked his pouch, did some arithmetic, and made a decision. I could obtain food, drink, lodging for myself...but my funds are better spent on the group. He who eats like a cougar also lives like one, away from the herd. "BARTENDER!" The last Fryxian slammed a meaty three-fingered fist upon the bar. "A round of drink for your saviors!" His fist opened to reveal the meager pile of tiny gemstones and ingots that were his life's savings. Lowering his voice almost to a whisper, he added "Your CHEAPEST drink." Claiming his own mug of swill, he turned back to the assembled warriors and raised it above his head. "A TOAST!" He addressed Jolan first. "It is no surprise that a Lor would fall prey to terminal radiation sickness. Even by the standards of the lesser races, your kind are known to be ill-suited to the rigors of space travel. What IS surprising is that, while already hovering at Death's door, you would choose not the comfort of soft cushions in a hospital bed, but to PROVE YOURSELF WORTHY, spending your final days seeking battle against hopeless odds! Your FLESH may be weak, but you have the SPIRIT of a TRUE WARRIOR!" He turned to Fa'Rua and Sitara. "As do you. Instead of abandoning your brethren to die alone, you JOIN him in CERTAIN DOOM! All three of you are a credit to your people." The blue ram then directed his sincere if backhanded compliments toward Kath'lana and Bliss. "HONOR...COURAGE...SACRIFICE...HERD. These are things most FLESH-EATERS do NOT understand, sleeping alone and striking without warning from the shadows and the treetops. But YOU..." He addressed Bliss. "YOU have CLEARLY seen battle, and you embraced AUGMENTATION, TRANSCENDING grievous injury and innate frailty alike!" He turned to Kath'lana. "And YOU are no mere FELINE, but A KNIGHT OF THE CITADEL! You HAVE a herd. YOU understand. No doubt thanks to a PROPER BOVINE taking you under his hooves." He turned to B'ka and slapped him on the shoulder with his free hand. "One who has SACRIFICED a great deal! None would begrudge a blooded veteran such as you some sort of prosthetic, whether it be for tactical value like the squid-waif here, or simple vanity! But YOU bear your scars OPENLY, PROUDLY, as if to WARN your foes, you need NOT your horns, for you are DEADLY STILL without them! It is A GLORIOUS BOAST!" He snorted and released a sigh, satisfied at having so quickly and shrewdly taken the measure of his new comrades. "It will be MY HONOR to die alongside all of you."
