Freedom City

December 1st 2023, Evening

The first day of December is a cold and dark Friday evening in Freedom City. Snow is slowly falling, giving the city an almost ethereal sense of beauty, calm and peace. A good and peaceful start to the time of christmas.

But this is Freedom City, and that obviously won't last.

As Bernadette O'Connell returns to her dorm, she finds a folded piece of paper in the shape of an rectangle on her bed. Once it is unfolded, the paper shows machine written text that reads "Want to do some good? Come find me." and a set of coordinates.

When Leon Moore comes home, he finds a piece of paper likewise folded as a rectangle on his table. The machine written text on his paper reads "Wonder what Casanova and his goons are up to? Come find out." and a set of coordinates.

Luke Landers likewise finds a folded piece of paper, with a message for him. "Do you know where you girlfriend is? Come save her." and a set of coordinates.

The coordinates on each piece of paper point to the same abandoned warehouse in Bayview.

Bernadette had just finished singing practice and was a bit tired from a long day. Thankfully one of her duplicates was in the library getting some studying done for upcoming finals before the holiday break, but there was still so much to be done. She was surprised by the presence of the note on her bed and regarded it a moment before picking it up and reading it. The note just screamed of Charlie, or a trap, or both.

Taking out her cellphone she quickly shot a text off to Luke and Leon

Quote

hey!, you 2 heard from C. recently?

The redhead then considered the note once more and the likely sender. Toward the end of last school year, during a game of truth or dare she had admitted to Luke and Leon (as well as Carmen and Neko) that she had a bit of a flame for Charlie. He had been one of two crushes she had had at the time, both likely equally doomed, for very different reasons.

Charlie had a lot of great qualities (besides being super cute with a athletic bod), but he could get waaaay obsessive at times. In some cases, that could be something of a positive, like how he had worked to counter the plans of Casanova over the prior two years at Claremont. And then he had up and disappeared several months ago, dropping out of contact with anyone.

In some ways, the Irish teen had been thankful that she had been somewhat distracted with first the singing competition she and Summer had participated in up in Boston toward the end of the summer break and then just how crazy things seemed to be at the start of this new school year and all the new students that had arrived. But now, here was this note she was more and more sure was from Charlie.

Seein' you tonight, is a bad idea, right? Bernadette thought as she looked back down at the note, remembering the lyrics of a song. She paused a moment and let out a small sigh. $@#! it, it's fine.

A short while later the teen had changed into her Claremont uniform, with a warm black hoodie over top and made her way out of the dorm building.

Paper

Leon stared at the folded paper. It could honestly have been from any number of people. He knew who he wanted it to be from, but just looking at it he knew it wasn’t.

He hadn’t heard from either his brother or sister in months. Not since they had fought.

No punches had been thrown, but words can hurt worse. He hadn’t mentioned the fight to anyone other than Neko, not even Luke. His best friend could tell something was wrong but hadn’t pressed the subject. Leon appreciated it.

He’d have to tell him eventually.

With a sigh he picked it up and regarded it. Even without opening it he already knew what it said and who had sent it. The paper told him.

Leon’s phone buzzed and he gave it a quick glance.

Timing.

Somehow Charlie was really good at that. He had to give the man credit for that. He opened the note anyways and looked it over with his own two eyes.

Casanova? Now there was a name he hadn’t thought about in a while. Charlie had been all about messing with their fellow Claremont alumni, and Leo had been happy to go along with him. He didn’t care much for the boy’s attitude, which was saying something coming from him.

At least Charlie had been, before he had up and vanished over a year and a half ago. If Leon had done that, he’d have wound up back in juice when they got their hands on him.

Leon had tried to fill in some kind of leadership whenever any of them happened to been together and heroing needed doing. Not for lack of effort, but he just didn’t seemed to pull the respect of the others like Charlie did. That was fine, he didn’t want to actually be leader. He was just use to working with a team.

Not that he was part of that team anymore. He thought darkly, then shook it off.

He closed the note and stuffed it into a pocket. Pulling his phone out again he tapped out a reply to Bernadette’s group text.

Speak of the devil…

Leon tapped the coordinates into the map app on his phone and copied it into the chat with another text.

Barging back into his room with the largest (and cheapest) bowl of instant ramen he had managed to find from the shop downstreet, Luke quickly felt like something was amiss. Now, it could not be thieves, after all there was nothing worth stealing in his place... Graduating high scool and becoming a legal adult certaintly hadn't magically resoulted in his perpetual broke-ness going away, especially given that his criminal past didn't make him a particularly attractive hire.

Still, perhaps due to his dragon instinct, he could feel that someone had violated the privacy of his den. Which was rarely a good sign. The message, styled somewhat like a ransom note didn't exactly manage to ease his tension either.

Someone had Muirne? What? Coordinates? Sounds like a freakin' trap... Maybe Blowfish wanted the millions in gold bars that the young dragon had liberated back and thought about blackmailing him? Unlikely, though, somehow he doubted that the Southside gangster would be able to get to his girl... superhero and all...  He dropped his bowl on the small kitchen table and then sat on his bed, studying the note intently. Nothing...

He searched the pockets of his sweatpants for his (miraculously still working given the age and suspiciously crappybrand) smart-phone. Great, the cohordinates pointed at an abandoned warehouse. Another good sign. Wait. New messages. Groupchat. Mmm...

What what? Chaz?
...
Nop Nothing
...
Wait... Did you?
...
The F- message.
...
You got one too?
...
He... I...
My chewing is gonna be f- litteral (roaring dragon emote)
...
He almost got me an heart attack
...
See you there!

"Well buddy I guess you are gonna have to finish this..." He sighed as he left the bowl on the floor, so that Chewy could reach into it, and rubbed the abomination cub on the head as the creature clakced joyfully and threw soon started slurping what was supposed to be Luke's meal.

"Good boy..."  He muttered absent mindedly as darted outside, his eyes focused on the cohordinates on the screen.

The abandoned warehouse is easy enough to find, given the coordinates that were on the pieces of paper that the three heroes believe that their friend Charlie has left for them. It is easy enough to find each other, given their group chat. The streets around the building seems empty at this time of night, save for a group of what seems to be homeless people that are camping by a nearby bus stop.

From the outside, the building looks like any abandoned warehouse. There's a few loading docks with closed gates. Windows with dirty glass at the top of the side of the building, near the roof. A few of them are broken. The building seems to be in a state of disrepair and neglect. It seems like it has been years since anyone has done any repairs or maintenance.

But appearances are not everything. The moment each of you reach the area, you feel a strange sensation of foreboding. It feels like things are simply not right.

You can see a flickering light from inside the building, which manages to shine through the broken windows, though only barely visible through the intact and dirty glass.

As she started off towards the coordinates Leon had shared, Bernadette regarded Luke's initial responses in the group texts. Shaking her head slightly, the redhead sent off a reply.

Quote

Are u that bleedin' daft?

Once she was off campus the Irish teen focused on picking up speed as she ran down a trail off the main roads for a bit.

Later, she had met up with both Leon and Luke as the trio stood atop a building near the coordinates provide in the messages.

"Well, that looks real invitin'." The redhead commented as she looked at the other two. "So, we want ta just storm in, or sneak in…with a diversion?" As she spoke, one of her duplicates appeared beside her, who regarded the original a moment before sticking her tongue out.

The young man, despite clearly being more than a little on edge, had saluted his friends warmly before shifting his attention to the task at hand.

"Cozy..." Luke nodded as he surveyed the building from above.

"Well Chaz always had a taste for the dramatic..." If it was him, but then again his friends seemed convinced. "I mean... my message looks like a freakin' ransom note." He chuckled as he recovered the crumpled message from his pockets, to demonstrate.

"Whatever..." He concluded with a shrug, stretching the muscles in his neck.

He smirked at the appearance of the duplicate, bowing his head a bit to her playfully.

"Smells like a trap..." He mused. "Let's jump in..."

Leon sat on the edge of the roof with his two ‘teammates’. Honestly they hadn’t felt like much of a team. Between school, work, and life in general they seemed less a team and more a collection of kids pretending to be one.

Leon gave an exaggerated yawn and took a sip from a to-go coffee cup. He hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary… yet. Something felt ‘off’ though and that didn’t sit right with him.

“I don’t know about you two, but imma gonna get a closer look.”

Without letting go of the coffee cup Leon leaned forward and let himself fall off the roof ledge. Twisting as he fell, paper swarmed and a moment later he was slowly descending via hang from a paper umbrella like a famous nanny. Coffee still in hand.

The umbrella closed and tucked under his arm, Leon started towards the destitute warehouse looking for any signs of activity.

Getting closer to the warehouse, Leon (and the others, if they follow) only feel the sense of unease increasing. Like whatever they are walking into, whatever is going on in there, it is just inherently wrong. Something that just should not be. There is something at the back of their mind, something pulling on something primal inside them.

Reaching the door, which is just slightly ajar, they hear a sound. A man is lying on the ground, struggling against some kind of metal mesh which has wrapped tightly around his body, including his mouth, but not his nose, so he can still breathe. He does not say anything. A ragged hoodie is barely visible sticking out of the mesh, and there are holes in his shoes. His eyes seem vacant, even as he sees the group, and he does not seem to register them.

A green-ish light shines from the slightly ajar door, and they can hear loud voices from inside, though it is difficult to make out what they say.

"Well, alright then." Bernadette muttered as Luke indicated they should just jump into the likely trap and Leon promptly did a Mary Poppins off the roof. The redhead glanced over to her duplicate who just shrugged her shoulders.

Dismissing the duplicate (at least for the time being), the Irish teen then went over to leap off the roof to the roof of a nearby building that was slightly lower and then bounding again down to land near Leon as the young man started towards the warehouse.

As they drew near, Bernadette felt the strange growing sense of dread about the situation and how everything seemed way, way off. She once again summed a duplicate, all though the increased numbers did not do much to change the feeling of unease.

When they reached the not fully shut door, the redhead looked inside to see the figure bound on the ground. "What?" She stated as her duplicate moved through the door, trying to move quietly to check on the status of the other figure.

The original Bernadette also moved through the door, stepping to one side of the door as she entered and tried to determine the source of the greenish light…

Bernadette and her duplicate enter through what seems to be a loading dock, where the crates would have been prepared, but it is now mostly empty. It is cut off from the rest of the building by a wall with a door that stands open, which seems to be the source of the greenish light. It would be reasonable to guess that the room that the door leads into is the main warehouse floor.

As the duplicate moves closer to the bound man on the floor, it becomes clear from the look in his eyes that he is not quite there, almost like his body is just moving on its own. He barely seems to notice, and doesn't react to the duplicate at all at least, continuing to struggle against the bonds.

Suddenly, a figure blocks the green light from the open door, casting a long shadow on Bernadetta and her duplicate. Like the one on the ground, their clothes are ragged, but it is otherwise difficult to make out anything about the figure. They watch, they have clearly spotted you, but they don't call out. Not just yet, at least.

Leon quietly approached the building, not seeing any signs of recent activity outside. The door was cracked and he peeked through with the others. There was a figure on the ground inside. It seemed to be struggling against its restraints as green light and the sound of voices from further in reached them.

He didn’t like this, but before he could say anything first, one Bernadette slipped inside, quickly followed by another. Leon bite back anything he was about to say. He watches as the two girls try to quietly cross the loading dock when the green light from the doorway becomes blocked.

Leon silently cursed and stepped back to looked for an alternate entry pointed. After only a moment though, he sighed and shook his head. He didn’t feel like playing along anymore.

He looked at Luke and shrugged, then he stepped up and threw the door open. He walked in confidently, hands in his pockets and looking directly in the direction of the figure in the opposite doorway.

“Knock, knock.”

He announced.

"Intruders!"  the figure in the doorway yells, pointing towards Multi-Girl. As he turns away, the greenish light from the floor.

Then, a woman yells and there is a whistling sound. The man in the doorway just has the time to throw himself away, before an empty metal barrel comes flying into the room that Multi-Girl, Paper and Nightscale has begun to enter. It hits the door, which ruins the aim, and it crashes along the ground without hitting anyone.

With the door way no longer blocked, the group can see Bluejay, the vice-principal's telekinetic daughter. Her blue hood and costume is noticeably more ragged than the last time any of them saw her when she graduated at the same time as Luke and Leon. She had been part of Casanova's New Young Freedom, and, some of them at least, had fought against her on multiple occasions. She had always been more interested in the fame than the heroics, which was just why she had worked Casanova in the first place, but right now, she seemed strangely silent.

Inside the main warehouse, Bluebird is not alone. Various old containers have been pushed aside, clearing the middle of the room. The floor is painted with all kinds of arcane and eldritch symbols, candles are burning around them with greenish flames, wavering in the wind after the barrel that had been thrown. Ten or so men and women, who, judging by their clothing, seem to be homeless turn around from the tasks they were performing to stare at the door. They all have a vacant look in their eyes.

By the wall opposite of the door that the heroes are standing by, a large man sits on the floor. Chump. Super strong, super tough. He does not seem like he is happy to be there. He is wearing a pair of jeans and a dark blue shirt with the sleeves torn off. The cop's badge he used to display so proudly is still attached to the shirt, but it is bent.

Toxin looks down from above, sitting on a container. She is still dressed in her containment suit, but it is dirty. The yellow and black lines, the clear danger symbol, it doesn't stand out as clearly as it used to, and the clear face mask is no longer clear. None of the heroes can see her face.

In the middle of the eldritch sigils on the floor stands Casanova. He is the only one so far that does not look like a mess. His hair is combed nicely, he is dressed in an uniform in the Claremont colors, and he is smiling. His face is not as pretty as it used to be, his nose never quite being the same after Nevermore broke it during a fight. He is staring madly at the door, the smile frozen on his face.

By his side stands a woman in a skin tight grey, armored uniform, a whip in her hand. The students at Claremont used to know her as Stinger, where she would wear a cowboy inspired costume. She was outed as Ms. Scorpion, the daughter of the Sportsman and Princess Poison, during one of the group's last outings before Nevermore disappeared. Her new costume shows clear inspiration from her namesake. She still bears a grudge after Nightscale burned her, which had made her parents and her brother, the second Sportsman, to attack the group during the conflict where her true identity was outed. She is clearly happy to see Luke again.

A woman that none of the group recognizes stands by Casanova and Ms. Scorpion. She has curly black hair and marble white skin. None of the group recognizes Ghule, but she has been there for a while now.

And finally... sitting on the ground by Casanova is Muirne Sceadusangere. Shadowborne. Luke's girlfriend who, as far as he knows, has been in England with her family for the last several months. There seems to be a thin dark tendril of smoke that connects her to Casanova.

Sebastian Shields, Casanova, stares out at the people inside the door. His smile turns into a frown. "Get them! Don't let them ruin everything!"

Leon’s eyes adjusted to the interior and he quickly took in everything as his eyes swept the room.

“What have we learned?”

He directed towards Multi-Girl.

“This is why you scout before you B&E. Now it looks like we interrupted a party.”

He recognized a number of the costumes and faces. Leon gave a little whistle.

”Some familiar faces here tonight.”

Paper shot Casanova a smirk.

“See, now that just makes me want to ruin all the things.”

“Guess if it’s a party, let me introduce my plus one.”

Paper pours out of his jacket until it dissolves into paper entirely. It swarms and gathers under Paper, lifting him as it amasses and takes shape.

“Her name is Sue.”

He grins and the shape under him stretches and snaps massive jaws. The paper T-Rex easily reaching 40’ in length as it uncurls fully. Paper standing on its shoulders a good 12’ off the ground. The construct mimicking a silent roar.

The STORMCROW

Despite the situation, despite what is going on down there, with a friend caught up in Shields' plans, despite however many people Shields got on his side, Charlie can't keep the smile from his lips as he sneaks through the building. He had seen Bernie, Luke and Leon approaching, he had passed over them, unnoticed and entered the building from above while they took a more direct approach, and now? Now they are drawing all the attention while he is kneeling on the rafters above, his dark cape wrapped tightly around him, helping to hide him from sight. His friends will probably be pissed, sure, but he had to get things right, had to get them all ready... well, at least until he found out what Shields was up to with Muirne.

It isn't quite time to reveal himself, though, instead he speaks into his communicator, barely a whisper. "The gang's all here. Let's go for some shock and awe. Try to aim a bit South of the center, then you'll avoid me."

Reaching into his belt, he pulls out a small, bird shaped device and smiles again. Shields is gonna hate this.

From his position above, he drops it, watching as it hits Shields' shoulder and explodes into a rapidly expanding dark grey foam, which begins to harden as soon as its covered him, keeping him in place.

Ms. Scorpion shrieks, taking a step back the moment the device explodes into the rapidly expanding foam. Casanova starts cursing up a storm, struggling but failing to get out of it. "Who did that!?" Her scream is barely heard over the general screams of shock and terror from seeing Paper's dinosaur. Except for her, Ghule and Shadowborne, no one seems to notice what has happened to Casanova. Moving closer, she begins to pull at the foam, but with little effect. "Somebody help out here!"

From behind Ms. Scorpion and Casanova, Chump has pushed up from his sitting position. He is already mid-leap when Casanova is caught, pulling himself to the side as he flies straight into the paper dinosaur in a flying shoulder tackle.

Ghule shakes her head a bit as her eyes refocus - how did she get here? Who are all these people? Then she remembered, her best friend Sebastian Shields promised her he'd help her turn back into a human if she beat up his enemies! That sounded more than fair to Vik, who was spoiling for a fight anyway.

She ties back her unruly, curly black hair, and cracks her knuckles. She's dressed in a black leather trenchcoat as well as a heavy pair of Doc Martens boots. This has the unintended effect of making her look like an extra from The Crow...not that you'd tell her that. Her skin is marble white, or so it appears, but she wears black greasepaint makeup resembling a skull.

And she's pissed off. How dare they attack her best friend?!

She looks across the room and the first thing she sees is Paper. She gives him a rictus grin, and holds her arms out in front of her. Bones pop and crackle as her body reconfigures itself, and two very sharp scapular bones emerge from her forearms, two bone axes, which she clashes together for intimidation. I bet I can kick this guy's ass, easy. Bet he hasn't even been in a real fight before!

But unfortunately, that would need to wait...Shields was in trouble! She wastes no time trying to free him, hacking away at his bonds with her bone axes. She works frantically, the axes falling quickly. Hopefully it wasn't too late - a-ha! With one final blow, she breaks him free of his bonds, and yanks him out of the foam.

"Who did this to you?!" she growls, as she brushes foam off of Shields. "I'll kick their ass! You hear that, losers? Why don't you come over here and see what you're made of? I'll cut you to ribbons!"

The foam that bound Casanova breaks, shattering into tiny pieces as Ghule makes short word of them. While Toxin, without saying a song, drops down to the floor and starts running towards the door where the dinosaur was before, Casanova shakes his body as he glares around.

"I don't know!" he almost snarls at Ghule, showing no appreciation for her help. "But I'm going to find them and rip their mind apart!"

He closes his eyes and focuses, and, when his search proves fruitless, yells and points at Paper. "Close your eyes! You're not gonna see anything ever again!"

Bernadette had silently cursed when she had knocked over something in the dark, drawing the attention of some of the figures in the room beyond. With surprise blown, Leon had followed closely behind and just gone straight for drawing attention from whomever was here. And then everything went crazy as the redhead identified several of the individuals in the other room, all of them associated with Casanova.

As the combat began, Bernadette saw some sort of canister hit Casanova and cover him in a hard foam. She smiled slightly, recognizing something that looked like one of Charlie's tricks.

Rushing forward, the redhead passed by Leon, moving forward into the other room so that she was in the middle of the largest concentration of bad guys. "Ye still up ta yer creepy plots Shields?" She asked as she ran into place.

Then suddenly there were dozens of Bernadettes, moving out in all directions towards the various opponents. As they went, the duplicates began throwing punches and kicks at the villains, many landing solid hits.

While that was going on, the duplicate Bernadette had summoned initially moved away from the bound individual and ran towards Chump, figuring he likely would take more effort to take down. Coming up from the side, the duplicate launched a sidekick at the former cop, but her aim was a bit off and the kick glanced off his upper arm with little effect.

The Multi-Girl explosion crashes through the warehouse, kicking and punching. While Casanova manages to block and move out of the way, staring wide eyed and pissed at the original Multi-Girl, most of his cohorts are not quite as lucky. The people in the ragged clothes are handily dealt with, while Bluebird is completely overwhelmed by a group of Multi-Girls that take turns beating on her. Ms. Scorpion does her best to fend off the duplicates, but she is hit in the back by a sneak attack, while Chump is completely dumbfounded. The hits keep raining down on him, but that doesn't stop him, until a particular blow to his jaw makes him see stars for a moment. Toxin, for her part, is safe behind her armored containment suit.

"Somebody take her out, right now!" Casanova yells, almost in a panic.

When Luke finally burst into the room, following his friends and had the chance to take in the scene, the young man could do nothing, but starting to see red.

Muirne was there, which was a definitely relief , but the smile on his lips died down quickly, apparently Cas, had gotten into her head again, the idea itself was enough to fill Luke's young heart with rage.

"Get the Hell out of her head." Nightscale half-shouted, half roared, ignoring everything else that was going on in the room, dashed past the group of fighters, the army of clones and the circles of runes almost if none of them were really there.

He crashed into Cas, with all his weight, pinning the telepath against the floor and trapping him in an in a tight grip, unleashing a fury of punches and claws, that, although they had very limited impact on the man himself, at least proven to be somewhat cathartic.

Shadowborne

Muirne looked tired as she surveyed the chaos, barely recognizing what was happening at first as Bernadette ran rampant throughout the hideout. Still, she recognized Luke as he attacked Casanova.

Letting her shadows flow out from her was a familiar pain now, skittering shadows flowing over Luke, Casanova and Bernadette, although to little effect against the aggressors, only binding Cas. She spoke up quietly, her voice sounding worn and tired, "Fýrdraca, please don't make me fight you. Just let him go." She spread her arms, like she wanted him to come give her a hug.

Paper

His construct collapsed under him, paper pooling around the floor. Leon landed in a crouch and gave Chump a mock offended look placing a hand on his chest.

“That was very rude.”

He chided in mock indigence.

It was like a trigger and all hell broke loose. Something went off and foam blossomed around Casanova, but some hot topic reject produced a couple axes and cut him free. Shields shouted at Paper and he felt the pressure on his mind.

Paper shook it off and flashed the would be dominator a smirk. Giving him double one finger salutes.

Multi-Girl ‘exploded’, landing a clean sucker punch on the big guy as well as taking out a bunch of small fries. She was followed closely by Nightscale literally roared past them to go full linebacker on the jerk.

From the corner of his eyes he managed to catch sight of their friend Muirne, aka Shadowborne, calling up her shadows on Nightscale and Multi-Girl. That might be a problem.

Chump seemed off balance as Paper turned his attention back to him.

“See, what’s so great about Sue, it’s that she’s a clever girl.”

Paper swept his hand upwards and a giant maw erupted from the paper covering the floor. Massive teeth and jaws snapping closed on Chump, pinned him in place as the T-Rex head starts emerging with the Chump struggling in its mouth.

The STORMCROW

Stay hidden. Out of sight. Use the darkness to your advantage.

He shouldn't.

He really shouldn't.

But he can't help himself.

From above, a part of the darkness suddenly breaks away from the rest. What at first seems to be giant black wings spread out, as the figure emerges, moving somewhere between a fall and flight. The black wings are quickly revealed as a glider cape, black on the ouside, dark grey on the inside, with light blue lining at the edge. Light blue boots and bracers, a bird like light blue visor over his eyes, a mouth opening in the dark cowl. A silver utility belt with a dark logo with a bird on the buckle, and, on the chest, a large light blue birds logo. There's similarities to the Nevermore uniform, but it is clearly something else.

And then he starts laughing. A familiar laugh, one that sounds like he is just having the time of his life.

And as he soars towards the shocked Ms. Scorpion, Stormcrow folds in the cape and drops towards her, pulling out a quickly expanding staff and smacks her in the head, breaking her nose in the process, before he lands, whirling around with the staff held out to the side.

"Took you guys long enough!" he is grinning widely as looks around at everyone else, before speaking into the built in communicator in his cowl. "Some shock and awe would be really great right about now! Try to aim for Cas, Chump or whip girl, I'm pretty sure the rest of them are mind controlled."

Ms. Scorpion looks up at the sound of the laugh, just in time to see the staff being pulled out and swung at her and mutter a "Shit..." before the staff collides with her face. She screams, clutching her nose. "Wo id dad!? Bwoke my nose!"

Chump for his part shakes his head, too shocked from the last blow to really realize what is going on, as the paper wraps around him, and yet, the bruises seem to fade as he shakes his head and glares at Paper.
