  1. Toughness Save - 1d20+10 = 24 I don't believe I know what I'm rolling against, so I shall await your ruling.
  2. Sitting here and talking, Danny had to continually remind himself that this girl was the cohort of a supervillain. She didn't quite have the malevolent edge he'd come to expect from a villain. It was as though she didn't quite realize what she'd gotten into. Still, she seemed like a decent enough sort, and obviously needed help of some kind. As a superhero, he was obligated to try and talk her out of villainy at some point, but he felt like she was pretty strongly attached to her "boss", so that would require tact. And she did seem like someone who genuinely needed some personal advice... "Look, I'm not really the best guy to give life advice, but... I mean, have you ever thought about what you, yourself want? I mean, I grew up reading old Tomb Of the Scarab issues, and I'd totally give my left arm to hang out with Scarab. Even the new one that nobody knows much about. But at some point, I've got to be me, you know? You're hanging out with Madame Marvelous now, but what about your own future, right? I mean, wouldn't you like to spread your wings and have some Maxi fans of your own some day, or something?"
  3. Alright, so if these guys are all mooks, I guess he should take advantage of that and take 10 to attack them, and bump the saving throw DC up to 22 with Power Attack since I see no reason not to. Finally, if these guys are standing around in an alley, I believe that puts them in range of Takedown Attack, if he can properly damage them. And that's my first attack action on this site. That all work?
  4. After what seemed like hours, Danny was finally near the front of the line. None too quickly, too, as he could actively hear his stomach growling at this point. It was almost loud enough that he couldn't even hear the chatter of his noisy new friend standing behind him. Finally, he approached the food cart. Delicious aromas welling up in his nose, he opened his mouth to order... And that's when he noticed. Several feet away, he heard a commotion in the crowd. Turning to look, he noticed a teenaged looking kid running frantically through the mass of people. Danny gave a pained look back towards the food cart, but when a jetpacked figure bounded over the crowd after this kid, Danny knew there was call for a Stinger. He sighed. "The things I sacrifice for you people..." After a quick transformation detour behind a nearby stage, the Blue Stinger emerged. His jumping wasn't the best, but it was enough to clear the circle of people that had surrounded the boy and his pursuer. The pursuer in question was a young, blonde woman who would have passed for a student here save for the military-looking flight suit she was wearing. He noticed Aratech markings on the suit. She wasn't wearing a mask or anything. His money was on some inexperienced, hotshot compay recruiter trying to play hero. He decided to intervene before things got out of hand, moving to place himself in between the two. "Hi there! Blue Stinger. I don't know what's going on here, kids, but if we all play nice I'm sure this can end nicely and the lady here can go back to recruiting for her corporate masters or whatever. Good?"
  5. Didn't have this thread followed for some reason. Following now. Anyway, here's the Notice Check. 1d20+10 = 21 . Not the best, but an alright roll.
  6. Blue Stinger: Giant Size Issue () Initiation Night () Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Beetle ()
  7. Danny actually felt a little guilty about how excited he was to hear someone screaming for help on this dark, empty night. Reflexively dropping his bag of groceries and sprinting off towards the sound. He then remembered the carton of eggs and loaf of bread in said bag and hoped in his mind that they landed on something soft. Ah, well. On to more important things now. "Go! Stinger!" he called out once he was sure nobody was around. The call was completely unnecessary to his transformation, but it was good way to get into the "hero mood". Also he just thought (perhaps misguidedly) that it felt cool. He slid around the alleyway corner as a blue costume assembled itself around him. "Let's Rock."
  8. Tagged. Made my roll with an end result of 31. And Danny is way too into the heroic entrance to jump in out of costume, so he'll henshin beforehand. (He has quick change, anyway.)
  9. Ah, sweet! I mentioned in chat that I'm currently travelling, so my initial posts might come a little slower than normal, but I'm going to try and keep on it as best I can. So many threads going now! It's exciting...
  10. Danny Randall would have rather been just about anywhere else in the world at that moment. It wasn't that this girl behind him in line wasn't nice. In fact, she seemed quite friendly, but she was one of those humans that just would not stop. Talking, dancing, pointing, yelling. All at a much higher volume than was necessary. He felt like he needed a nap just from being next to her. And he didn't even really go for most of this weird artsy stuff anyway. Heck, he liked to stay off campus as much as he could. But he had been lured here by one thing and one thing alone: the promise of authetic Etheiopian cuisine. And darn it all, he was getting some. This was a break from his daily routine, at least. Since the... Thing... His days had been kind of fast. Any time he wasn't working or at school he spent patrolling the streets and trying to get the hang of these new powers. But even a cyborg human needed to eat, and not even this obnoxious girl could take this meal from him. "Yeah. Me too. I'm the exact same way." He feigned interest in whatever it was she was going on about. Nothing could happen now to keep him from enjoying some Injera wrapped beef. Nothing in the world.
  11. Yeah, Danny shouldn't have any footage, or anything in the way of evidence, for that matter, since his main objective at the time was escape. At this point, all he really has to go on is that there is an organization somewhere that wants to make cyborgs.
  12. "I think I saw a recent movie of hers, yeah. Not long before she switched careers..." He chuckled. "It was this hilariously awesome sci-fi movie with a lizard creature that totally looked like... Ah. Sorry..." Danny stopped as he struggled to reign his thoughts in towards the matter at hand. As a big metas fan himself, he'd known people like Maxi, who would attach themselves to a larger-than-life super powered being, giving anything to get closer to that world. More often than not, they were the ones you heard about on the news getting injured in crossfire, or hurting others by getting in the heroes' way, and the villain fans were usually even more trouble. He'd never met someone who had actually succeeded in getting powers, though. It seemed, however, that something about the reality of super-life was finally getting to this girl... He spoke up again. "I sense a "but..." or some other comparable conjunction coming along in your story?"
  13. Maybe it's the LoT hype talking, but this sounds really awesome to me. I don't know how well Stinger fits the idea, but this vaugely resembles the kind of team I was thinking he could work on. Considering his inspiration, flying under the radar and fighting in secret would make sense, and he does have ties to a historical villain, as well as being a young/not well known hero, which would contribute to the "Legends of Tomorrow" feel. I guess TL;DR: If you think Stinger could work, I'd be totally on board, as long as he's not taking away from anyone else.
  14. Danny pulled his bike over as his quarry slowed down. Taken slightly aback by the sudden change in situation, he attempted, awkwardly and confusedly, to shake a hand that was larger than he was. The ending "Marvellous" immediately brought to his mind images of a psychotic and flamboyant supervillain who had made several appearances in the news in the last few years. He vaguely recalled something about a size-shifter following her around, and wondered what this girl saw in such a fruitloop. "Uhh... Blue Stinger..." he halted out, "You'd be surprised, actually. I mean, yeah... You've clearly, uhm... got more than just a sidekick thing going on with the whole... growing... huge... thing. That's a pretty cool ability... Should I ask why your end goal is teaming up with with Madame... Marvelous, right?" He dragged out the name, as if to second-guess his statement.
  15. Now that she's given a name, I'd like to make a quick Pop Culture roll to see if Danny's ever heard anything about a Maxi-Marvellous before. http://orokos.com/roll/288117 1d20+16=20
  16. 1. If one views a role playing game as mix of role-playing (story telling focus) and game (tactical challenge focus), what kind of mix do you like? Personally, I tend to gain most of my enjoyment from the storytelling. That said, I think rules and putting definite numbers on things makes the whole game feel much more "real", with actual limits/consequences as opposed to just making it up as you go. I guess mostly storytelling, but with enough challenge to keep the story engaging. 2. Our site operates a policy that no PC should die without player permission. Failure, however, is another matter. A villain could get away, an innocent (or beloved) could die, calamity could happen, your PC could get the snot beaten out of him and humiliated (publicly or privately). How do you feel about the prospect of failure? What chance of failure would you like, and what type of failure would you tolerate, expect, or indeed wish? In real life, I've always felt that failure only really happens when one gives up on trying. Carrying this over to the game, as long as the hero can return to fight another day, I would just consider any losses/failures/etc. as dramatic buildup to an eventual win. However, when somebody plays a superhero RPG, there is usually a bit of wish-fulfillment going on, so you want to succeed more often than you fail. That and a hero who consistently fails will stop being interesting after a while. 3. Superheroes have great power, the power to impose their will upon the world. This can mean the chance to escape the moral complexities of the world, or it can mean even greater moral complexities. What do you want? Do you like your antagonists as well defined, clear-cut evil, or your antagonists (and protagonists) to be more ambiguous, greyscale and three dimensional? (we should note that this site does not condone vigilantes or the like) I have always felt like superheroes work best when done as four-color characters with definite concepts of good and evil. That doesn't mean, though, that a little conflict or depth can't make characters a lot more interesting. I've always liked relatable villains, just because the moustache-twirling variety of villains never made any sense to me as believable people, but one can relate to a villain while still clearly seeing that the villain is wrong. For heroes, I guess I would would say that foibles help give them depth, but they should still clearly be good guys at the end of the day. 4. This site is unambiguously about superheroes. However, within those parameters, there is a fairly wide canvas. Three main categories that formed are the combat focus, The investigative focus, and the Social focus (which does not necessarily mean just chatting and making friends, but social conflict too). There are other themes and sub-themes, too many to mention here. Do you have any thoughts or preferences about themes? How much combat would you like in a thread, for instance? How would you feel if combat could be avoided by a subtle approach? As one who enjoys storytelling, I really don't mind social threads. It wouldn't be a very good superhero story without some action, though. I say "action" because, while combat is an enjoyable part of the game, creative use of powers/abilities to avoid fighting someone directly is always a really gratifying part of the roleplaying experience as well. I like a little dice rolling without making a slog out of it. 5. Finally, do you have any other comments on what your priorities or preferences are in playing a RPG, and more specifically, a superhero RPG? I've alluded a few times already, but my favorite part of any RPG is the collaborative storytelling aspect; being able to share my ideas while also letting myself be influenced by the ideas of others. This is especially cool in a comic-styled world where styles & characters that would normally not be seen together can be made to fit. For example, I have some very Tokusatsu flavored ideas planned for Stinger, and some of those happen and are cool. But then I get involved with someone playing, say, a mystical, "Dr. Strange" type, or a crew of space travelers, and the two styles meld into something neither of us could have done on our own.
  17. "Ah, good," Danny said, keeping a safe yet relatively close distance behind the teen behemoth on his motrocycle, "I was worried I'd have to deal with something really weird today..." Observing that everyone's attention was focused on her, Danny seized the opportunity to deploy his armor, willing it to fold out and cover his body. After a couple blocks, he was also able to focus a little bit more on the mumbling of the large lady. He could make out something along the lines of "I'll shower just how useful I can be... Yeah, she'll definitely want me after this..." "Ah, geeze... if this is a whole "spurned friend/lover" situation, I am so out...", Danny thought. He would fight supervillains readily, but personal conflicts? That was some CW-level crap there... Sighing, he finally decided to address the giant girl. "Hey there! Miss! You, stomping down the street in the smiley shirt! I don't suppose I could help you out here!? Also, I think these fine pedestrians would appreciate not being stomped on! Some people are just funny that way!..."
  18. Alrighty. http://orokos.com/roll/286770 Rolled a 3 and added my Notice bonus so 1d20+10=13 Really hope that extended hearing pulls through for me... :P
  19. Hmm. If she's mumbling, Stinger has one rank of extended hearing. Can I make a notice check to hear what she's saying? (And would he need to do anything special to get into range on his bike?)
  20. Looks like you've got a couple going now, but next time you're looking, I had a couple thoughts. Stinger and Foreshadow both prowl for lower level crime, so Danny's hatred of corruption/ "untouchable" bad guys might lead him to loudly conflict with a gang that Foreshadow was already tracking. More excitingly, AEGIS would be interested to know that SHADOW is creating cybernetic soldiers, and it's already been mentioned that Argonaut would probably have a few personal issues with that, so she and Stinger are bound to cross paths eventually..
  21. Came up with a couple ideas since somebody (might've been you) recommended this thread to me. If Miss Americana appears at Danny's college, the two might meet up tackling some small robbery or such near the campus. (If we're going mostly social, the PL difference shouldn't be quite as problematic.) Seems like, as an inventor, Gina would be at least a little interested in the technology behind his cyborg state as well. Really, though, anyone who patrols for street level stuff has a chance at meeting Stinger, so I'm up for anything/one you're inclined to use.
  22. Inside the cafe, Danny was just trying to enjoy the rare slow day. As he cleaned up one of the tables, he allowed his mind to wander, reflecting on the events that led to his recent career as a costumed hero. He was shaken from his thoughts by a sudden stirring from several of the kids inside the cafe. He turned around just in time to catch what looked like an enormous heel passing by outside. He popped his head out the door, hiding amidst the group of onlookers with their cell phones out. After about a second, he popped back in. "Hey, Tuck?" He yelled to his friend at the counter. "You mind telling Nattie I'm going to be out for a few? Tell her I'm delivering that... err... stuff we talked about." It was a bad excuse, but Nattie would know what he meant. Her understanding was a nice perk of working for an ex-superhero. Danny brushed past the onlookers and out the door as he relished what looked to be his first big encounter. "Alright, city. What are we dealing with today?"
  23. Alright, done. Not sure what I did with that Movement cost. Probably confused the device cost with its total PP. Added a point to the bike's toughness, since I feel like he's going to need that.
  24. Yeah, I'm hoping that when she does turn up again, I can make her fairly competent as restitution for using the oldest female character plot device in the world on her. And yeah, I have noticed quite a few tough lady villains & heroes since I gave him that complication. Haha. I actually completely forgot about sense motive. I put it in by switching out his notice ranks, since reading the crowd but missing obvious physical evidence feels a little more in character for him. I took away one rank of Improved Initiative, since even with only one rank he's still relatively fast for a non-speedster, and used that to make his body container Innate like you suggested. EDIT: I realized that no ranks in notice probably wasn't a great idea, either, so I shuffled some skill points around so he could have a little bit in both notice and sense motive.
  25. Player Name: JediDalek Character Name: The Blue Stinger Power Level: 10 (150/156 PP) Trade-Offs: None Unspent Power Points: 6 In Brief: Danny Randall is a wisecracking college student who was forcibly converted into a cyborg assassin by a SHADOW-employed villain known as the Red Scorpion. Escaping before he could be conditioned into a killer, he now fights a war of vengeance against SHADOW's secret conspiracies as the Blue Stinger. Residence: Freedom City, NJ. (Attending Freedom College) Base of Operations:Freedom City, Southside. Living off-campus in a low-rent apartment. Catchphrase: “Stinger Strike!!!” Alternate Identity: Danny Randall Identity: Secret Birthplace: Kansas City, MO Occupation: Student, part time server at Sparrow's Cafe Affiliations: Nattie "Sparrow” Stuarts: Boss and sometimes mother figure. Also a retired bronze-age superheroine. Samantha Krieger: Friend and former partner in following the trail of Dr. Gruber. As of now, she is missing. Family: Mother & Father (Both died when he was 18) Description: Age: 21 (DoB: May 2, 1994) Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Height: 5' 8” Weight: 167 Lbs. Eyes: Green Hair: Brown For the most part, Danny looks like an average slacker college kid, favoring dark colored jeans and t-shirts with the occasional plaid shirt. He is fairly skinny, and his brown hair is often medium length and disheveled. Personality wise, he is quiet but friendly, usually watching the crowd while keeping to himself with a slouched, unassuming posture. In costume, he is covered almost from head to toe in a blue & black battle suit, with a buglike helmet that alludes to his origin as the result porject SCORPIO, and a lighter blue scarf tied around his neck. He is more confident in his armor, and carries himself in a more upright manner. This confidence also leads him to be much more talkative and more lighthearted in general. When in battle with a supervillain that threatens others, however, his personality changes yet again and he becomes more aggressive as his heart begins to burn with the righteous flames of justice. Power Descriptions: One of the only visible manifestations of Danny's power is his transformation into the Blue Stinger. The Stinger battlesuit is normally compacted in multiple parts inside Danny's body. Upon the activation of a mental or verbal trigger, the battlesuit decompresses and assembles over the user's body. Due to the electromagnetic field that surrounds this armor, there is a noticeable "sparking" effect when it recieves damage. History: When Danny Randall was 18, he lost both of his parents in a seemingly random car accident. His journalist father had been looking into the shady dealings of a local business magnate for the last month and had recieved repeated, anonymous messages telling him to axe the story. While there was never much in the way of an investigation, Danny was old enough to know something was up. With no way of getting his family justice, and nothing else left for him in the Midwest, he decided that as soon as he could, he would move as far away as possible. Growing up in a world full of aliens and superbeings, Danny had always been fascinated with the science behind such amazing events and his Science grades, while not as good as some, were good enough to get him enrolled into Freedom College, far enough away to start everything anew. In Freedom, Danny kept mostly to himself, never one to make friends easily. After a month of near complete solitude, he finally found himself in Sparrow's Cafe. The Cafe was run by Nattie Stuarts, formerly known as "The Spectacular Sparrow", a retired crimefighter who decided she could do more by giving the kids of Southside a safe place to spend their afternoon than by punching crooks in the face. When a lost and empty Danny walked into he place, she could tell he needed a hand. After a few minutes of talking she decided he was a good kid, and gave him a job at the cafe. Over time, she would become an important figure in his life, giving him advice and motivating him to push himself. She even taught him a thing or two about fighting when business would slow. For two years, he subsisted through college, studying Engineering and working at the cafe. His life was destined to change, though, during the summer before his Junior year, when a panicked girl caught him outside his apartment, telling him that someone was following her and she needed a place to hide. She introduced herself as Samantha Krieger, granddaughter of a German supervillain known only as “The Red Scorpion” who was said to have created the plans for a cyborg supersoldier. After his defection to the US near the end of the war, any trace of said project seemed to have disappeared with him, until 3 weeks ago, when a group of thieves broke into Samantha's home and stole a few heirloom paintings. She was certain that those paintings somehow contained the last secrets of her grandfather's research, and that whoever stole those paintings was someone with an eye on finishing her grandfather's work, someone with a lot of resources at their disposal. When she began to notice certain faces following her around town, her suspicions were merely confirmed. Danny always hated a bully, be they the pushy jerks in high school or the “untouchable” businessman who felt that his checking account was more important than the lives of a loving mother & father. Whoever wanted to silence this girl was just more of the same, and Danny wasn't going to let them win again. They became good friends after that, as they slowly edged closer and closer to the truth, constantly evading these mysterious "bad guys". After two months, they finally had a lead. The pair follwed a clue into an abandoned warehouse in the Waterfront... and into the clutches of one Dr Elias Gruber, a former compatriot of Samantha's grandfather who had taken on his mantle, now working for SHADOW to create an army of cyborg assassins. Struggle as they might, the two could not overcome his personal detachment of SHADOW agents. The last Danny saw of Samantha, the two of them were both being dragged away as test subjects for Gruber's new endeavor: Project SCORPIO. When Danny finally awoke, he discovered that he was no longer fully human, his skeleton and most of his organs replaced by machines that enhanced his strength, speed and stamina, and clad in a strange, bug-like armor. Restrained and imprisoned, all that was left was the mental conditioning that would destroy his identity and leave him a loyal minion of the new Red Scorpion. But then, as all seemed lost, the hidden base had a power failure. Danny seized his chance and escaped, his new powers giving him the strength to fight off his guards. Danny searched the base for Samantha, but all he could find was the blue scarf she'd been wearing. Gruber had escaped, and seemingly taken her with him. Danny left the destroyed base with a new purpose on his mind. Tying the scarf over his armor as a reminder, he pledged to fight evil, be it Gruber or more of his kind. Some day, he would save Samantha and redeem her grandfather's image as the Blue Stinger. Personality & Motivation: For most of his life, Danny has seen people he cares about be pushed around by those with more power. Now that he has the strength to fight back, he has little patience for anyone who would hurt the weak, and will fight them with unwavering ferocity, and a passion that only a very green superhero could muster. Danny has been through quite a few dark situations by this point, and would have every reason to be very grim. Despite this, he was raised to see the good side of things, and to appreciate good humor. Because of this, he always tries to behave in a light-hearted and optimistic manner, constantly making jokes and quips. Even so, the reality of a bad situation some times dawns on him, allowing a little cynicism to permeate his humor. Before gaining his powers, Danny led a fairly uneventful life. He would often try to escape this boredom through reckless street driving in less populace areas, becoming something of an adrenaline junkie, even dabbling in free running before returning to his love of the road. Gaining enhanced durability and reflexes has merely raised the bar for what he considers excitement, and he can often be seen racing his bike through the city at breakneck speeds. Powers & Tactics: The cyborg conversion gave Danny increased strength, speed and durability, as well as enhanced sight & hearing. He also posesses a unique set of battle armor, meant to be the standard for what would have been SCORPIO assassins. The armor retracts into a group of compartments inside Danny's modified body, allowing it to be "summoned" by mental command. The armor produces a light magnetic field that allows the wearer to stick to most surfaces, in addition to absorbing forces such as the impact of a long fall, or limited amounts of damage. Through mental effort, this field can be briefly concentrated in either the hands or feet for a single, powerful attack. While he lacks much in the way of formal combat training, the Blue Stinger attempts to compensate by virtue of his incredible speed & strength, fighting with a mixture of pro wrestling moves and “things he saw in a movie one time”. In line with this sense of the dramatic, Stinger is quite fond of delivering flying kicks or elbow drops from high buildings. While very unorthodox, this approach has caught at least a few super villains off guard. Concept: The Blue Stinger is in no small part inspired by the Kamen Rider series, with little bits of Jaime Reyes & Peter Parker. More specifically, he is inspired by the Showa Era (70's-80's) riders, with their more "Silver Age" feel. My end idea was to take the idea of a Showa rider and portray him as he could have been in a Marvel publication from the 70's. Complications: Cyborg Human: As a result of project SCORPIO, Danny is both man and machine, and feels as though he has lost some of his humanity. In social situations, this may cause him to suffer penalties due to a loss of empathy either from himself, or from those who know about his condition. Enemies (SHADOW/Red Scorpion): The mad doctor who captured Danny was working for SHADOW. He had the resources to lead Sam & Danny into his trap, so it is only a matter of time before he finds out Danny's secret identity and relays it to his masters. In addition, they would seem to have Samantha captive, and Danny would do just about anything to get her back safe. “Hey, I Have An Idea...”: Danny is the product of a generation weaned on TV and action movies and, even for a super hero, he sometimes gets ideas that just aren't feasible in real life. Any time Danny is faced with a fairly simple problem, he can be made to take a much more complicated and difficult approach to solving it, preferably one that has the potential to fail horribly. Hot Blooded: Danny has a particular hatred for “bullies”; anyone who uses their power to hurt others who can't defend themselves. He will fight these forces, even if severely outmatched. If he witnesses any kind of bullying or oppression, the GM can force him to step in. In addition, he will never willingly flee from such a fight unless he makes a very difficult willpower roll. Legacy of The Scorpion: Danny hasn't been the Blue Stinger long, and is still making a name for himself. Since his armor was originally crafted in the image of a Golden Age supervillain, however, those familiar with the Red Scorpion might know just enough to jump to all the wrong conclusions and treat him as a villain until he is able to clear things up. They Can't All Be Zingers: As any comedian will tell you, for every funny joke you tell, there is always the crushing silence after that one joke misses its mark. During any social situation, the GM can make Danny tell a joke that is very stupid and either offends someone or somehow diminishes their opinion of him. (He will, however, never use any humor that goes against site rules eg. no sexual/racial slurs, no "R-rated" jokes, etc. He can be ignorant, but he's not a jerk.) Wouldn't Hit a Lady: Danny feels a great amount of guilt over leading Samantha into the clutches of SHADOW. Coupled with a somewhat “old-school” upbringing, this causes him to have moral compunctions about deliberately causing harm to females. Whenever he is in a fight with a female opponent, the GM can ask him to make a willpower roll to make the first blow, and give him a penalty to the rest of his attack rolls against that opponent.
