  1. Winifred followed Riley's eyes in Raina's direction then back to their gruff friend, narrowing her own eyes slightly as she tried to picture the woman he was describing. When he got up to head over the the bar she held out her glass for him to take with him. "Perhaps I should consider taking up residence in some sort of wetland as well," she mused aloud in her dry deadpan, shaking her head slowly in amused chagrin. "I think I could do well as some sort of bog witch, brewing potions and wearing jewelry fashioned from small animal bones. One can hardly argue with the quantifiable results."
  2. "Okay, now you sound old," Ryder laughed, immediately raising both hands in an apologetic gesture, though his grin remained. "'Plug the cable in'. We can go wireless with a secure enclave so nothing's getting intercepted, easy. But totally, a diagnostic suite is an excellent call. We'll need those sensors anyway for auto-stabilization, managing power consumption, that stuff." On the topic of colour he pulled a pained expression. "It's smart to think about secret identity stuff but a plain white ride seems deeply tragic to me. Eira, you know how to do all sorts of cool colour changing stuff, what do you think?"

  6. Mr. Hunter made a small gesture without looking up from what he was sketching that might have been interpreted as dismissive or simply encouraging further iterating on her ideas. "Harpoon and winch, reasonable. Too heavy overall to lift itself but anchoring a fleeing vehicle, halting a fall, hnh." By contrast the hand holding the stylus was moving rapidly across the tablet, seamlessly switching from the minute movements of note taking to broad stokes outlining shapes. "Slick poor choice in city. Danger to bystanders." He paused abruptly and looked up, raising one eyebrow almost imperceptibly. "Submersible? Thematic."
  7. "Je vais bien," Ellie replied immediately, her tone clipped and inflection a little odd. She heard it in her own voice and shook her head, eyebrows raised a little. "Gah, that is weird. But yeah, I think I'm good. Ceecee took the brunt of it, maybe?" She looked down to see her hands visibly shaking, fingers clenching into uncomfortable claws. She moved them under the table before the Furions' attention could move from Lightbringer. "Or maybe I just don't try to stand up for a few minutes, that would be good, too. Please don't call Mara unless I actually pass out. She'll make the grumpy face." Leaning back in her seat she half closed her eyes and focused on rhythmic breathing to bring her heart rate down.

  9. "A smart, attractive fashion designer with super powers?" Ryder supplied while opening the door to the apartment and taking an immediate step into the living room to the left, making room for the others to enter. He dropped his shoes off on a matt just inside that room and hung his bag on a wall mounted peg, leaving the Robugs to disperse themselves throughout the room. "I feel like you'd manage." The hallway directly in front of Natalia had another three doors beyond the open entrance to the living room. She could see one end of a dining table at the far end and a kitchen beyond that. A deep, jovial voice called from that direction, "Hey, kids! Good timing, dinner's just about to hit the table, haha!"
  10. Ellie pretended not to notice Copycat's tense hesitation and snorted softly in amusement at her 'rodeo' quip. "Listen, magic is about confidence, y'know?" she noted under her breath. Luckily I'm only half magic so it should be fine that this only seems like half a good idea. She slid off her jacket and indicated the space between her shoulderblades exposed by the arc of her top's collar. "Going to need both hands free for this. Saddle up." Exhaling, she extended both hands in front of herself with her fingertips almost touching. A ripple of bio-electricity caused the fine hairs on her arms to stand on end and tingled Copycat's palm before tiny sparks arced between her knuckles. Soft blue light gradually appeared around each hand, growing in intensity as she pulled them further apart until she had to squint to watch what she was doing. Slowly she brought her hands down on either side of Lightbringer, making small soothing sounds as the infant reacted to the brightness. That light pulsed as it reached the little Furion, immediately dimming and stuttering, visibly bending in his direction. Ellie clenched her jaw and refocused, working to stabilize the energy she pouring off of her. Don't need to fill the tank, just need to burn off the entropy damage that's keeping him from metabolizing the energy of the Silver Tree. Probably. She'd done something similar before and she was prepared by the malignant, snarling feedback as something that was beyond illness pushed back against her. "<There you are, you baby-killing @#$%,>" she muttered in Spanish.
  11. "That's what I'm saying, Voltage!" Ryder enthused approvingly. "Having just one place where you can work on something is the pits, especially if it's something you rely on everyday." He stopped trying to poke Eira's forehead as she telegraphed returning her attention to the physical body but remained warily confused about her teasing until she made the joke abundantly clear. The expression that fell over his face wasn't upset exactly but it seemed decidedly out-of-place with his usually enthusiastic demeanour: he was unimpressed. "Oh, that's what you meant. I don't really do 'locker room talk', sorry. Especially about people who aren't around; Nat's mentioned a couple of times she doesn't appreciate people talking about her body, so. Yeah." He turned his attention back to Danica with a quick clearing of his throat. "Anyway! Don't think of it as engineering, it's not like you're going to be rewiring stuff on somebody's lawn. Probably! But we could totally make the connection points for stuff chunkier, so you can change out an axel or the handlebars yourself. The point is to let you do more stuff not make more stuff you're not comfortable doing, right?"
  12. Ryder was distracted for a moment trying to figure out the best angle from which to continue to poke Eria's forehead without getting bitten but turned to give her holographic projection a quizzical look when her tone changed. He reflexively looked over his shoulder when she winked, confirming it hadn't been directed any someone behind him. "Yes? Why wouldn't I study gravimetrics? Why are we winking?" He gave Eira a sidelong look while responding to Voltage, "C'mon, you're not the kinda guy who only takes his car to the dealership for service, right?" He gave the older man a dimpled grin, making it clear he doubted Voltage would be working at the Lab in the first place were that the case. "Sometimes you misjudge a jump and accidentally ride through some chainlink fence and take a clothesline with you before ending up down some concrete stairs to a basement, y'know? Gotta be able to patch things up enough with a nice old grandma's cookie tin kit to get home!" He didn't seem to think that was too specific an example with which to make his point.
  13. "It's fine, you're allowed to think about how cute I am Ceecee," Ellie breezed while they headed to the infirmary, rolling her shoulders and stretching her neck from side to side to try to relax muscles threatening to knot up from anxious tension. "Just remember I'm a married woman." She still wasn't thrilled with attempting an experimental and technically nonessential procedure on an infant but it was a obviously a very weird situation. She didn't see any way to test their plan without putting it into practice; how did one go about simulating a Furion child with entropic damage? She hoped she was making the right decision. "And make sure you copy the healing touch and not the bad murder touch, yeah?" she added under her breath as Aarden and Serpa spoke with Erin.

  15. "I still wear basically the same costume I did when we were in high school," Ellie pointed out to Erin while they waited. "And it has a crop top. It's about having the confidence to own it. Confidence and vee-cut abs." The young doctor had taken a seat on the edge of a counter by the time Copycat entered the office and gave the new arrival a nod and casual half-wave, half-salute. "Hey, appreciate it. Ol' Dethroner here is really going through the contacts list on this one. Here's the situation." She caught their old classmate up to speed with the medical side of the situation with a minimum of fuss or snappy repartee. "So the plan was that if you can copy me and be another stream of healing then I should be able to focus on making sure we throw the proverbial cutoff switch before anybody gets hurt. Idea more than plan. Notion, really."
  16. Ryder continued to rhythmically poke Eira's physical head while considering the holographic representation. "Ha, you know we were just talking about gravimetrics? I think it probably comes down to power requirements, right? Maintaining levitation with gravity field is going to be way less likely to get messed with based on environmental factors as long as the environment is, y'know, Earth. Maglev would be way easier on the battery, though. Easier to get parts for when you need to service it, too." Poke. Poke. Poke. He scratched his chin with his free hand and squinted a bit before remembering to answer Voltage. "Oh, sorry! Sure, water would be smart after the jumping and punching and kicking earlier, thanks!"
  17. "Aw, you think I'm extra spicy," Ryder teased with a bright laugh, rummaging around in his paper takeout bag as they walked rather than more sensibly waiting until they could find some sort of table. "Anyway, I'm sure it won't be a big deal. It's not like we were sneaking out after curfew or out patrolling and actually looking for trouble or anything. She'll understand that we couldn't just stand there and let people get trampled!" He shrugged and used his teeth to tear open the thing plastic wrap around his utensils. "Following the rules exactly isn't more important than doing the right thing." He said it with the confidence of someone stating an obvious, universal truth.
  18. Ryder planted his hands on his hips and let out a low raspberry. It was always tough when the people you showed a project you were working on weren't as excited about it as you were, worse when you'd been working on it specifically for them. He'd been there but he hadn't had a way to literally disassociate from his body in response to the disappointment and embarrassment. While Danica made polite smalltalk with Voltage, who seemed to be there as some sort of chaperone, Ryder walked over to their friend's motionless form. He considered the artificial body for a moment then reached out and poked it in the side of the head. "Eira." He poked her again. "Eira." Poke. "Eira." Poke. "Eira."
  19. "How come you can talk about my glands but I can't ask about how your powers work!" Ryder objected rhetorically with a laugh as he led the way up the sort of narrow staircase common in buildings trying to make the most out of in-demand real estate. The door at the top of the stairs was a little awkward, flush with the last step up so that he had to reach up and lead forward to swing it open. It had a keyhole but evidently the family didn't keep it locked while there was someone manning the restaurant downstairs. "Genes are overrated," Jenny chimed in, brining up the rear. She was making a point to give Natalia ample room in the cramped space, lagging a few extra steps behind without drawing too much attention to the fact. "The Fujioka charm is one hundred percent nurture over nature, hun."

  21. Ryder had let out a burst of bright laughter when the holographic simulation began to swoop about in the air, then cut it off with an unconvincing cough when it became clear that Eira wasn't kidding. "Oh, uh...! I mean, I'm super into it, obviously." For her part Magenta inadvertently helped to defuse any awkwardness by racing back and forth across the lab floor, chasing the holographic Wing and occasionally hopping into the air in an attempt to catch it. "No, but really, it's rad! Just maybe there's some, y'know, feature creep going on, yeah? And maybe it's a little over engineered. And you sort of went for something you'd like without really thinking about what Danica asked for originally." He paused, distractedly fiddling with his hands. "I'd really like to check out the software you're using for the HUD at some point, though? Sounds sweet."
  22. "Allocated resources? Why, how much do you charge?" Ryder asked Voltage with a broad grin and a snap of his fingers into a finger-gun point. "Hey, Eira, thanks!" He opened up his bag and retrieved the two sets of earplugs Magenta had fished out of its recesses for him. While the Robug hopped out and began scuttling around the laboratory looking for interesting things to poke Ryder handed Danica the second set of ear protection while putting his own in without any comment to acknowledge the volume of the music; he'd worked with Eira often enough to be prepared. "Haha, yeah, about the bus. Funny story, you remember that big electric guitar monster thing I told you about, the thing Utsuwa and I ran into?"
  23. "I kinda just like stuff with my name on it," Ryder noted, taking the proffered badge and examining from every angle in undisguised fascination, trying to reverse engineer the thought process behind the scanable icon. He grabbed the one printed for Danica as well just in case and gave the receptionist a grateful grin and casual salute. "Thanks, Mx. Kiva! Nice to meet you!" Jogging off he quickly caught back up with his classmate in the indicated direction. "So really we'd be rescuing those poor abandoned projects, sure!" he said with an agreeable nod. "Oh, let me know if you see anything that looks related to gravity manipulation, would you? I've been working on a thing but I've only got maybe one or two shots at getting it right and Nat's going to be really disappointed if I waste it."
  24. "I wonder how much of the tech from before they shut down is still in storage somewhere?" Ryder gaped as he took advantage of the slower pace Danica set to spin about on his heels as he walked, trying to take in every detail of the building's interior. "I mean, if nobody's come to get it after this long, it'd probably fine to take a look, right? Take some notes, maybe repurpose a couple parts--" He stopped that train of thought and stood up straight as his slow spiral brought him around to face Kiva's friendly welcome. "Oh, ha! Hi! Sorry, got distracted. Thanks for the directions! Do you need up to sign in or anything? Badges?" He gave them a bright, dimpled smile.
  25. "Catherine," Winifred admonished with mock severity. "That is not the solidarity I was promised." She began ticking off points on her fingers. "Yes to comically sexy trousers. Yes to workers' rights and self-care. We talk a lot about 'self-care' in meetings as well. Yes to awkward gossip from Smith about southern belles or however you refer to them in 'gator country and yes to another one of these." The alchemist slid her now empty glass toward the middle of the table then added as an aside, "I'm working on developing a more positive outlook, you know."
