  1. For several heartbeats Eve watched her guests watch her, then she shook her head slightly as she tried, but failed, to smother a tiny bubble of laughter. --Oh mercy's sake,-- she admonished, --This isn't some formal affair, it's just brunch!-- Pushing abruptly away from the table the telepath pointed at her stocking feet. --Look, I already kicked my shoes off. Eat, relax, have fun.-- Sitting back down at the table as Renard poured her a cup of coffee, --And tell Renard what you want to drink.--
  2. Eve stepped away from watching Trevor and Mara talk, she wasn't a gearhead either but you can't spend time with Trevor Hunter and not come away with some small appreciation of mechanics and engineering. The blond was adorable, the telepath reflected, happy that Sometimes Jill brought her along. Drifting over to Erin and Hope, Eve paused to listen by was almost immediately interrupted by Renard announcing that brunch was ready and would everyone kindly take their seats in the smaller family dining room.
  3. --Go ahead and build it,-- Eve said having listened carefully to the exchange between Trevor and Mara. --Just let me know when you're done and I can have my brother handle all the legal wrangling. We just sponsored the opening of a new oncology wing at McNider Memorial as well as providing donations for renovations at Trinity Hostpital so I am pretty sure we can swing it.-- The teen shrugged, --We don't usually call in a marker but this is such a minor thing it's no big deal.--
  4. --We all have secrets,-- Eve replied to Jill, the mental tone carrying no feeling of recrimination. The gymnast moved over to the stairs; moving up a few steps so she could look everyone in the eye. --To those of you who I count among my friends,-- she started, smiling at Erin, Trevor, Jill and Mark, --I am truly pleased that you accepted my invitation. Those of you who I don't know well or have just met, it is my wish that before this day is through we can establish a lasting relationship.-- --We have a few moments until Renard is ready for us to eat the lovely meal he has prepared, so I just wanted to take this moment to officially welcome you to my home. You are all welcome here, at any time, and under any circumstances.--
  5. The white haired teen inclined her head to Hope as she suffered Mark's greeting, the smile on her face evident that she didn't mind his usual exuberance. --Hello Mark, Hope. I'm happy you could make it. If you wish you can wait in the sitting room until the other arr--oh here they are.-- Eve practically glided through the front door and down the sweeping white steps when she saw both vehicles pull into the circle. The question of who to greet first was easily resolved when Erin stepped from the truck first and was quickly joined by Trevor. The young Martel quickly folded the taller auburn haired girl into a quick hug before stepping back and hugging Trevor. --Mark's inside,-- she informed the couple, --You should hurry on in too. It's a bit cold.-- By this time she noticed the motorcyclists had extracted themselves from their ride. --Hi Jill,-- the telepath called to the taller girl, two heartbeats later she was hugging her like she did Trevor and Erin. She hesitated briefly when she turned to face the blond but she soon pulled her into a quick embrace as well. Stepping back she gestured to the front door, a snow white eyebrow raised in an expression of curiosity. --I see you finally found someone to come with you,-- Eve murmured in Jill's mind, a sense of playfulness accompanying her words, --I'm glad, though I must say just a little surprised. When we get inside I think introductions are in order.--
  6. No voice answered Mark over the intercom but the large double gate slide open soundlessly on its well-maintained track inviting him and his guest inside. Eve broke from her reverie and hurried inside, vaulting over the railing separating the second floor balcony from the foyer. This earned her a reproachful look from the older gentleman with salt-and-pepper hair, which she merely answered with a grin. --It's OK Renard, I got the door.-- The butler sniffed, looking for the entire world as though he were insulted but Eve could see faint smile at the corner of his mouth. Shaking his head he went back into the kitchen. Eve's grin transformed into a wider smile as she stepped out the front door, hands clasped in front of her as she waited for her friends to arrive.

  8. On the shore of the Great Bay at the end of a long, private road sits the Martel Estate, hidden behind conifers and a large gated wall affording the owners considerable privacy. Standing on the private pier, one could make out the distant Lonely Point Naval Station across the water. Once known as Windrush, an old Victorian that was demolished during the Terminus invasion, the new mansion is considerably more modern in appearance. While this might have raised a few eyebrows in the community, the current owners and residents where known to be a rather nice sort and were generally left to their own devices. Eve stood on the balcony attached to her room, feeling the brisk winter wind on her face as she looked out across the water. She was nervous; the young Frenchwoman had spent the better part of a year alternating between the desire to invite her friends over and the resolve to keep everyone at a careful, controlled distance. It seemed sensible at the time, she reflected, but when she fell into the hands of SHADOW it was the very people she kept at a distance that rescued her. She owned it to her friends to let them into her life, all the way in. When she told Nicholas this, she expected he would disagree. His response surprised her. So she sent out the invitation; brunch at the Martel Estate in North Bay.
  9. "Certain flaws are necessary for the whole. It would seem strange if old friends lacked certain quirks." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Sunday, 6 February 2011 10:00
  10. The ungloved Sage grabbed the fabric of the caped Edge's uniform and twisted him around, following through with a vicious slap to the taller boys face. <<You brainless buffoon,>> she raged, <<You're the one that suggested teamwork, and we agreed. But that does not give you the right to make unilateral decisions.>> The blue-clad telepath let go of Edge, shoving off of him. <<You got that? You don't go making decisions for the rest of us.>>
  11. --And that would be them, right?-- The black clad Sage inquired, gloved hand gesturing at the battlements of the fortress ahead. <<Certainly looks like al-Khayan operatives, but I don't recognize the men in black and grey.>> --SHADOW,-- Sage replied, a thread of scorn punctuating her thoughts. --Umm,-- Sage glanced at the others, rubbing the bridge of her nose. --What do you think the chances are those clockwork automatons will assume we're with them?-- Even though we're not carrying AKs. Nobody good uses an AK.

  14. Sage was still annoyed with her double, though she finally managed to get over her initial revulsion. Still, there was just something about the girl that rubbed her wrong. She cast a surreptitious glance at the other Sage and noted that she was looking at her. <<Hey, look, what was the problem back there?>> --The way you were looking at Midnight… It just… look, I took a look inside your mind when you were staring lecherously at my best friend.-- The other Sage burst out loud, laughing, but stopped short when she saw the look Sage gave her. <<Oh, yeah a head full of that explains your reaction. Don't tell me you didn't think the same thing though.>> --I didn't.-- <<What, not even a little? I mean you called him your best friend, right? So you know what he's like under that mask. He's cute rght? I bet he's cute.>> --Oh, he's nice. Just… umm, not my type. We're just friends, that's all.--
  15. <<None taken,>> Sage thought, shooting a faint smile at 'her' Midnight, subconsciously shifting her weight bringing herself just a little closer to the masked vigilante. She tilted her head, casting an appraising glance at the other Midnight, obviously ignoring those standing with him. <<Creature of the Imageria notwithstanding,>> she practically purred in Midnight's head, <<He has excellent taste. Still not as good as the original, though.>> --Knock that off!-- The thought had slipped unbidden into Sage's mind and it sounded furious. Peeling her eyes off of Midnight's counterpart she saw that her double was glaring at her. Even if the mental projection had not carried with it a feeling of sharp reprimand, the set of her features and body language certainly conveyed a sense of anger and… disgust?
  16. Sage quickly slipped out of her restraints and hurried over Wander, placing a hand on the other girl's shoulder, tugging slightly and shaking her head. --Careful. We're not alone here; I sense five minds outside the dimensional drill.-- The telepath regarded the strange device; something that looked vaugely like a boring machine used to dig the Channel Tunnel, just a bit smaller in scale. <<Wander, I'm sensing the presence of five people inside the device. If they are who we think they are we need to keep them inside there. If they hit open ground we lose the advantage a chokepoint provides.>>
  17. Eh, I like posting. I could post in this thread of yours. With Sage. She's not a tech person but she is a communication person.
  18. Feeling invigorated after her half hour run, Eve made straight for the kitchenette and put on a small pot of coffee. It was a blend Trevor recommended and the one he had offered to her after the reality bending events centered around the Lucas family. Though nearly a year had passed since then, the events still twisted Eve up inside; but out of that came one of the few friendships she truly valued. Trevor Hunter had been one of the first people to greet her when she arrived at Claremont and at the time she thought the tranquility of his mind was merely interesting but irrelevant. She never imagined she would need its calming influence; but the events of that day pushed her right up to the brink of wanting to hurt someone for its own sake. She sometimes regretted keeping her distance from Trevor despite regarding him with a fondness that nearly matched that which she had for her brother. But since he started dating Erin, Eve didn't want Trevor to have to make the choice between spending time with his girlfriend or a friend, so she took the decision out of his hands. Eve gave herself a rueful shake of the head as she padded into the bathroom while the coffee percolated, the wonderful aroma already filling the dorm. She left herself enough time for a shower and a simple breakfast before she had to be at class, it made no sense wasting it lost in thought.
  19. It was cold, the wind threatening to make it almost bitterly so, and the crisp air brought a touch of color to Eve's cheeks and caused her breath to mist. She worked through her stretches, noting that she was the only one outside at this hour, though she could see some of the door rooms had lights on. That suited her just fine, she reflected. Her old outgoing nature was struggling to reassert itself after being so long suppressed but as of now her preference for solitude still dominated. Eve knew that her teachers were concerned with how she deliberately set herself apart from the other students. And she knew they had a right to be concerned, but nearly three years later she still felt isolated from the rest of humanity. Eve started her run. She didn't have a set distance in mind, just an allotment of time. The young Frenchwoman's route took her through the main entrance and keeping the wall enclosing Claremont to her left, Eve loped along the outside perimeter. She pushed all thought of the teachers and their concerns from her mind and simply focused on her run.
  20. Claremont Academy Friday, 21 January 2011 Note: This will initially be a solo thread. This OOC thread exists for the off-chance that it will not remain one. Never Fear Shadows, while starting in Bayview/Claremont will not remain there. This story will span a couple of days.
  21. Never fear shadows. They simply mean there's a light shining somewhere nearby. -- Ruth E. Renkel Claremont Academy Friday, 21 January 2011 The alarm sounded, 6:00 displayed in a subdued blue on the clock face, and with a stifled yawn Eve limbered out of bed. Padding over to her desk she tapped the spacebar on her laptop bringing the machine out of standby, light flaring from the LED display causing green eyes to narrow as they adjusted to the sudden brightness. Calling up today's weather, the athletic teen considered for a brief moment of using the indoor track but quickly dismissed that notion with a small shake of her head. Glancing at the photo on her desk, Eve lightly traced a finger along the simple platinum frame, a ghost of a smile on her lips. Minutes later she was out the door, dressed in comfortable winter running gear.
  22. Earth- Paragons <<OK, that was the most badass thing I have ever seen, or taken part in.>> Sage flashed a grin at Midnight as she dismounted from the bike. <<We must do it again sometime.>> The telepath glanced around the office space they landed in and spied what she was looking for, the fire evacuation placard all commercial buildings were required to have posted near the fire extinguishers. A glance was all she needed to commit the map to memory. The details were a bit sparse, as is so often the case, but it did have enough detail about the general layout. <<Come,>> Sage beckoned Midnight, dashing past a row of cubicles, <<We're only about thirty meters from the elevators.>>
