  1. Sable Raven "Yes, he started in the sixties. I have a different perspective than him, as well." Sable Raven said, his voice quiet. "My own Freedom League was younger and more modern - we had far more diversity than his." Shaking his head, he looked back to the Raven. "Regardless, I would appreciate being linked into the network, so to speak. I do wish to meet my counterpart properly, as well as his daughter." He snorted, his helm cutting the noise off from the outside world. "A daughter, and with Tzin Li, no less. I never would've..." He choked off the words. No use weeping over my lost opportunities. Weep for the lost opportunities of the world. "I don't think you could use the exact designs. These metals changed when I was cast into the multiverse and arrived here. I'm still not certain of all of their properties, but I intend to find out more." Sable Raven shrugged slightly. "But I'm happy to lend my expertise if you are looking to develop powered armor. It's not as easy as you'd hope, but neither is it as hard as you'd dread." Behind the helm, Duncan smiled at the thought. It's not the sort of dread I usually inspire, but...

  3. Sable Raven "Yes, it was rather disturbing to see that there were others who had taken on the name when I first arrived here." Sable Raven mused. "I... well, I hadn't imagined letting someone else take the reins when I was back home." He sighed into his helm again. "To be honest, it's rather depressing to consider, if understandable." The armored helm turned back to the Raven, and a hissing laugh emerged from within. "Erm. Sorry. Voice alteration technology messes with my laugh. In any case, I do have my own little base of operations in this lovely city... though my home could probably do with some more adjustments..." Sable Raven shook his helm, setting the thought aside. "And a family, hm? I had my own companions and aides, though none took to the field in vigilantism. Regardless... they say that you learn more as a teacher than as a student. Perhaps we can teach one another some things? I know I want to pull back a little, but..." He spread his clawed gauntlets. "Perhaps I can teach you a thing or two on how to build something like this? If you don't already know, that is."
  4. Can I get Initiative from @Kaede Kimura and @Lone_Star?
  5. Sable Raven "Mm." Duncan submitted quietly to the examination. This Raven probably has more experience than me in fighting crime, to say nothing of the myriad dimensional invasions that this world has had. Doctor Sin... isn't that what Tzin Sing calls himself here? After a moment, he flexed his gauntleted hands, tapping his claws against his bladed helmet. "From what I can tell, I come from a different universe from this one, yes." Sable Raven lifted his helm and placed it on his head once more. With a hiss, it sealed itself to the rest of his armor. "My suit is of my own design. Brought here from my home." At the Raven's mention of his use of rather excessive force, he stopped, turning towards the Doomforge. "I am, in fact, using my name. If anything, you're using my name, too." A sigh escaped from his lips, silenced to the outside world by his helm. "But... yes. I know you're right. In my world, things were rather more brutal than here. I'm still unlearning my habits." Sable Raven turned back to his counterpart. While that was true, the war that had brought an end to his world had been yet more brutal still, and that, he suspected, was the problem. In the shadow of the Doomforge, I lose myself. "I... well, I've been out of control here. It's hard to see this part of the city fallen so far."
  6. @Spacefurry, you may want to make a stealth check, now that you're in.
  7. GM Paper moved forwards, around the back of the police station. After jumping over a fence, circling around a guard, and ducking under a low-hanging fire-escape, he arrived. Taking a quick look at the door, he noticed that several things would bar his progress forwards - first, the door was locked. Second, it looked like a fire door, which might set off an alarm if it was opened carelessly. Third and finally, he was pretty sure he could see some sort of wire on the inside, which might be a trap. Thus, the young ex-thief carefully began the task of disabling what he can. The lock was first, and he picked it easily - it had no chance against his skills. Next, the trap - slipping a piece of paper beneath the door, he carefully wrapped it tightly around the wire before yanking on it. The wire snapped, propelling a spike of obsidian to thunk into the door at head height. Finally, the alarm - and that was easy. He slid a piece of paper between the door and its frame, where the latch was. Keeping the paper pressed against the frame - and thus, the pressure on the alarm trigger - he pulled the door open and was inside. Looking around, he found himself in a stairwell, with one flight of stairs heading upwards, and another door leading deeper into the hallways of the station.
  8. Sable Raven I wonder if these people realize how close they came to annihilation. Sable Raven cast another glance at the Doomforge, sighing inaudibly. If they did, would they respond with gratitude or greed? His experience told him that the latter was more likely, but some part of him hoped the former was true - perhaps it even was. In this world, people seemed, on the whole, more idealistic. When he heard the voice, it took all of his willpower to not whirl and attack. If my stalker had wanted to fight, he'd have hit me when I wasn't aware. Slowly, Sable Raven turned his helm to look at the speaker. A quick blink turned on the gentle glow of gold in his eyes, and a slight twitch activated his voice changer. When he swung fully around, his knife-like beak glinting dimly in the ambient illumination from the distant streetlights, his eyes narrowed from behind his helm. So this is the one who took up my name. "You're the one they call the Raven." He said, rather than answering immediately, his voice a low hiss. "I've been wanting to meet you for some time, but I figured it would be easier for you to find me than the other way around. Glad I was right." The armored man turned more fully to face his counterpart. "I call myself Sable Raven, since you seem to have taken the title for yourself." That was true enough. "Your other question is harder to answer. I have as much right as anyone to this," he gestured at his helm and armor, "if not more." Sable Raven hesitated. He'd gone over this so many times in his head, and yet now that he was face to face with the (admittedly hostile) Raven, he couldn't quite find the words to share what he knew. Or who he was. Finally, he continued. "You see, I happen to know a couple names. One because it is mine, and one because I looked into it." Swallowing hard, he looked around for anyone else, his infrared vision activating. No one. I suppose this is safe enough, then. With a few clicks of his teeth and flicks of his eyes, he disengaged the locks on his helmet and pulled it free, revealing his face. With his blue eyes, dark hair, and faintly aristocratic features, he was a spitting image for the Duncan Summers of the early sixties. Or at least, he hoped he was. "Duncan Summers, Callie Summers. I don't know who you are, but I know them. My name is - was - Duncan Summers, and I was the only Raven of my home. It's a pleasure." God, I hope this works.
  9. GM Leon's phone showed the outside of the police station's second floor, the viewpoint floating from one window to the next. Within, the teens saw a few police officers, still dressed in uniform (albeit with somewhat sloppier formality than the usual fare). Several of them wore uniforms that were different - marked with the word SWAT. In one room the camera revealed a mixture of a dozen-odd uniformed police along with people in casual clothing - civilians, by the looks of them, given their lack of weapons, but it's possible they were complicit in the takeover of the town. Throughout the whole building, the teens could see more than a dozen spikes of the obsidian-like growths across the rooms. Around the back, there were about three windows covered by the stuff, blocking vision in or out. Fortunately, they did spy an exit out the back - probably intended for emergencies.
  10. Corrupt Police Officers might notice the flying paper-and-phone combination: But not with a 6, they won't.

  12. Sable Raven Someone, I forget who, once said: "The difference between silence and quiet is that the former is the held breath, while the latter is its release." Sable Raven wondered whether what he was witnessing in Kingston was silence, or quiet. The former would have been ideal, if it had been the silence of criminals, but he wasn't even wholly sure it was. The last time a civilian had seen him, the poor man had screamed. Just goes to show that I'm still not well-practiced in this whole "heroing" business, I guess. The armored vigilante stood on the edge of a roof that looked like it would be able to bear his weight as well as that of his Armor of Unkindness, and looked over towards the Doomforge that had ruined Kingston. Though it was some years ago, from what he understood, the sight made his stomach tighten and his fists clench. Beneath his helmet, he could feel his teeth grinding and he whipped his head away from the sight. Damned thing. Maybe that's what has me so on edge here. But I can't abandon a part of the city just because it reminds me of home. Gotta focus. So focus he did - the patterns of the Lee Syndicate were hardly the impenetrable schemes of Tzin Sing, and they'd been preparing for this little bout of retribution for weeks. One of the shop owners around here had rejected their attempts at racketeering, and now their lower-ranking thugs were trying their hands at arson. It shouldn't be long now...
  13. GM From his vantage point, Alek saw... stillness. The streets of Kingston were barely inhabited at this time of night - even the homeless had hunkered down in whatever shelter they could find. For several minutes, that seemed to be all - indeed, the silence on the streets was somewhat unusual - there wasn't even the odd car driving by. Then he saw it - an armored figure soaring through the air with a grappling hook. Even with his night-vision lenses, it was the movement that drew the Raven's attention rather than the heat - the armor didn't call attention to itself in infrared - at least not to the degree that a normal human would. Now that he had found it, though, it was obvious. The figure landed on a roof below the Raven's own, giving him the first solid look at it. A long, heavy-looking cape of stylized feathers was draped from the armored shoulders, while its gauntlets ended in sharp claws. Most notable, however, was the helmet - it resembled a plague doctor's mask (albeit without the goggles or the silly hat), with a long, slightly curved beak. From this distance it was hard to judge the armored figure's size, but it gave the impression of... large-ness. Whoever wore it was clearly seeking to terrify those who looked upon it.
  14. This is the OOC for this thread. To be perfectly clear: While this may start off as an antagonistic meeting, there will be no PvP, and Sable Raven is intended to work with the Raven, even to respect him.
  15. GM 3:25 AM, 1st of July, 2021 Kingston, North Freedom Criminal activity had recently been on the downturn in Kingston, despite its desperate populace, low police presence, and proximity to the dread Doomforge. Many, especially those outside of Kingston, attributed this to the hideous heat that had been overwhelming the city of late, while others pointed to the hero activity several months prior in the Doomforge giving criminals something to think about. People in Kingston and the FCPD knew otherwise. Unconscious criminals have been discovered bound to streetlamps, ladders, fire escapes, and more. Normally, this would be cause for relief, but the state they have been found in is of great concern - their bodies slashed and cut, pierced with extreme prejudice. Though they have all survived, the fact that their wounds were so vicious has many dreading the dark. The Raven also heard even worse news - scattered about the scenes, and sometimes still sticking out of the criminals were small, sharp shuriken stylized as talons, and the terrified criminals reported being attacked by a cloaked figure with the mask of a raven. Regardless of how effective this new vigilante was, they were causing the innocent to fear as much as the guilty, to say nothing of the fact that they were besmirching the name of the Raven.
  16. Legatus would join them - he'll be a bit at loose ends when he graduates.
  17. GM Having firmed their resolve, the teens moved onwards to the police station. Once they arrived, however, they found things might be a bit harder to deal with than they'd anticipated. First, there were several armed guards immediately obvious, just from the outside of the front of the building - they wore SWAT armor and held the heavier weaponry associated with that group. Meanwhile, the first floor windows were encased in shells similar to the ones that had entrapped so many along their way there. Breaking those would probably be harder (and louder) than breaking the windows. Worst of all, there were signs of movement inside the building - probably guards, but possibly civilians - and thus, potential hostages.
  18. Oops! Wow, that is weird. I forgot that it did that. I knew intellectually that it cost equal to the buying it in the Abilities section, but I somehow got that and the 2 points/1 bonus mixed with 2 points/1 Ability point. Anyways, that opened up a significant amount of PP, to the point that I'm not wholly sure where I put all of it. I added a few ranks to a few skills, added Knowledge (Tactics) altogether, got 2 more Alternate Powers in the Assault Equipment, added the feats Skill Mastery, Well-Informed, Online Research, Inventor, and Acrobatic Bluff... and I think that's it? Oh, and I added a few senses to the HUD. I think that's all of it. Hopefully my math isn't screwy.
  19. Blast it! I was sure I was right when I rounded down, because I thought the dodge bonus was rounded up! I knew it was weird, but I forgot which direction was weird. Anyways, that's fixed. -7 has been adjusted - not sure where I got the -6 from. Might've been from before I made his toughness 15. As for the powers: I've recalculated the Strike bit, and gotten 6 + 1 + 16 = 23 for the total, from Strike 6, Mighty, and Enhanced Strength, respectively. I've also added the points I got from that adjustment to Datalink, Communication, and Flight, for 5 ranks in each (which also ups the Swift Movement Module to 3). I think that's everything fixed, as I also added the AP's cost on the blast.
  20. Greetings, fine heroes of the forum! It's that time again. I have a continuation of the Obsidian Prison mini-arc that was begun in The Petty Tyrant planned. I'm planning to kick it off when my new character, Sable Raven, is approved, as I'd like him to feature in it. This means it will be a PL 9 to 11 thread, focused more on investigation than on combat. If anyone's interested, let me know!
  21. GM The sirens, which had been fading, slowly began to become louder once more. The teens' car had likely been discovered, along with the signs that they had passed through the guarded entryway without much trouble. It sounded like the patrol cars were now out looking for them.
  22. Thanks for the reply! I like that idea with the feature, so I dropped a point from his Fort save to get "Transdimensional." I've also added the unarmored skills to the list. I think I caught all of them.
  23. If she had to guess, Muirne would say that they're likely alive, though depending on how long they remained there and how fast they were imprisoned in the obsidian, that might vary. A slower imprisonment and a longer imprisonment would both likely increase the risks of death.
  24. Sable Raven Power Level: 10 (150/155PP) Unspent Power Points: 5 Trade-Offs: +5 Attack / -5 Damage on Talon Launchers, -5 Defense / +5 Toughness In Brief: Power-Suited Cowl from a Dead World Catchphrase: “Fear the Dark…” Theme: The Abyssal Exalted – Death’s Lawgivers by James Semple Alternate Identity: Duncan Summers (Birth Name), Duncan Samradh (alias) Birthplace: Freedom City Residence: Freedom City Base of Operations: Carrion Cave Occupation: IT Consultant Affiliations: The Raven Family Family: Duncan Summers (Alternate Self, former Raven I), Callie Summers (Alternate Daughter, former Raven II), Callie Sen/Summers (Other Alternate Daughter, Madame Raven), deceased parents Description: Age: 26 (Born in September 1995) Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Height: 6’ (183 cm) Weight: 165 lb. (75 kg) Eyes: Blue Hair: Black Duncan Summers wears a somewhat unkempt and lackadaisical set of clothing, as well as a somewhat messy and ruffled hairstyle - an affectation of laziness and languor that only lasts at first glance. He strives to project the image that he is slightly well-off, but is trying to dress humbly. With dark hair and bright blue eyes, he nevertheless cuts something of a handsome figure by the standards of his society - at least, when he's standing. When he's sitting in his wheelchair, as he often does outside his home, Duncan comes across as rather less striking in the eyes of society, something he sometimes uses to his advantage in gathering information - too often people assume that broken body means mental incapacity. Sable Raven’s iconic Armor of Unkindness is unsurprisingly colored a mix of matte black, midnight blue, and dark grey. Made from metals that were dramatically altered by their journey across dimensions, the Armor has heavy gauntlets with clawed fingers, surprisingly light and soft boots, and a flexible yet heavy cape that allows the Sable Raven to glide as well as to distract his foes. His helm, however, is by far the most distinctive part of the armor. Resembling a beaked plague doctor’s mask in some ways, rather than the comical goggles of those antiques, there are eye slits which (when activated properly) glow with a dim gold menace. The dagger-sharp beak curves slightly, but is more than able to be used as a weapon, should the situation warrant it. History: On a world much like Prime Earth, there were no heroes to fight in the Second World War – costumed vigilantes were virtually unheard of, and when people heard the term “centurion” they thought not of a Man of Adamant, but of a long-disused Roman military position. Into this world, Duncan Summers was born in 1995 – half a century or more after the birth of his Prime Earth counterpart. A child of privilege, Duncan’s youth was cast in melancholy after his father died when he was four, leaving his mother depressed and mostly reliant on long-term caregivers to raise her child. As he grew, he saw more and more injustice and rising crime, but the world seemed too wrapped up in apathy to care – no one seemed willing to stand up to help others or protect the weak from predation. Gradually, Duncan began shaping himself into a hero – someone who could take on the burden of protection and justice for the innocents of the world. He learned martial arts, criminology, and dozens of other arts and sciences. Even in high school, he focused more on cultivating himself than on social connections, earning him a reputation as a recluse and an eccentric, even amongst the wealthy circles of his nominal peers. When he was nineteen, his mother died in an accident, and dolor surrounded the Summers Estate. Within a few months, Duncan had taken over the assets of his company and began using his personal fortune to fund the creation of a costume and all manner of gadgets to take up his mantle. Suffice it to say, the first outing the newly fledged Raven went on ended in a dramatic chase – not of criminals, but of the Raven himself, as he was pursued by the police, who deemed him a far greater threat than any criminals he might have faced. The next two years were difficult, but gradually, the Raven took on greater threats – the Conqueror Worm, the monstrous but wealthy House of Usher, the vampiric thief Lenore, and even the maliciously organized Tzin Sing all found in him a worthy foe. Even as he did so, other heroes took flight – Centurion, an exile from a destroyed universe. Bowman, an archer extraordinaire who had much in common with Duncan, and others still. In 2018, an invasion of Earth by the Grue Collective saw heroes from across the globe unite to fight against the alien threat. In the United States, the group that formed would later be called the Freedom League – made up of such greats as Lady Liberty, Centurion, Daedalus, Johnny Rocket, and even the Raven himself. For the first time in years, Duncan felt hopeful. This was not to last, however, as shortly after the formation of the Freedom League, Tzin Sing trapped the Raven. This ultimately led to him damaging his spine when Tzin Li, Sing’s daughter, helped free him from her father. Despite his escape, once he returned home, Duncan fell into bleak depression – even with the corrective surgeries available to him, he was no longer able to fight as he once had – merely standing and walking unaided hurt after a few hours. Pushing himself through the punishing acrobatics of the Raven was simply impossible. A visit by Centurion and his fellow Freedom League members helped inspire the Raven to try to contribute to the League as much as he could, and within a year he took on a role as a mission control for the League. Even as he did so, he began building a battlesuit that would enable him to take to the field again. In 2020, the suit was ready… just in time for the end of the world. Omega, the Lord of the Terminus, invaded, and the Freedom League fought hard, with the Raven, in his newly forged battlesuit, fighting alongside them for the first time in over a year… but the League failed – falling one after another, and ultimately, Daedalus worked with Centurion to cast the Raven free from the dying world. In late December 2020, the young Duncan Summers of the destroyed Earth arrived on Prime Earth. Unwilling to allow his friends’ sacrifice be in vain, he strives now to be the best hero he can, even as he discovers the wonder and hope that this new world offers. Personality & Motivation: Duncan Summers is an interesting mix of an idealist and a cynic. He grew up in a world more afraid of superheroes than welcoming of them, was broken by an enemy early in his career, and then lost his whole world on top of all of that. However, he remains firmly devoted to the protection of the innocent and the capture of evildoers. Indeed, coming to Prime Earth has inspired Duncan with how much more the superheroes do and how much better they seem to have made the world than he and his were capable of doing in their brief time in the limelight. In costume, Sable Raven has a dry sense of humor edged with slight melancholy – not even his foes are spared from his wit, and he is more than happy to mock them, especially if he is certain that they cannot see him. Out of costume, Duncan keeps his dry humor, but also tends to project the air of being somewhat laidback. Unlike his Prime Earth counterpart once was, he isn’t quick to judge others’ lifestyle choices (in part due to a difference in upbringing), and is firmly against systemic injustices just as much as he is against crime – this sometimes means he clashes with more authoritarian types, including the police, whom he regards with an uneasy wariness. Perhaps the second most dramatic impact coming to Prime Earth has had on Duncan is the discovery of his elderly alternate self, his alternate’s daughter(s), and the fact that the Raven isn’t a solo act any more. Part of him is horrified – how could someone wish this life on anyone else? Another part is proud to see that at least one Duncan Summers inspired people… but he’s also saddened for the lost potential of his former world – will he ever know the family that his elder counterpart has? Being the sole survivor of a universe is a dreadful thing, and it still weighs on Duncan like a mountain. He deals with it through sublimating the despair and fury into his work as a vigilante, but every so often he is forced into a haze of dolor when he encounters someone whom he knew on his home world, but who does not know him. Powers & Tactics: The Sable Raven strives to inspire terror in his foes. Using voice changing technology to transform his speaking voice into a harsh, sharp whisper, vanishing from sight when others take the briefest moment to look away, and striking from the shadows, he is quick and oftentimes harsh in his tactics. While he tries hard to hold himself to the higher standards of Prime Earth’s heroes, under pressure he sometimes acts with more viciousness and even near-lethality than even he is comfortable with. Most of his combat potential, however, lies firmly on the back of his Armor of Unkindness, with its stylized shuriken-launching gauntlets, its (slight) enhancements to his strength, and its protective plating. He uses the integrated tools willingly and often, from the grappling hook to ensnare others, to the beak to headbutt or cut restraints, and so on. Power Descriptions: All of the Sable Raven's "powers," such as they are, come from his Armor of Unkindness - whether it is the talon-launcher on one gauntlet, the grappling hook on the other, or the razor-edged claws and beak adorning his fingers and mask. His seemingly heavy cape can snap outwards into a facsimile of wings, allowing him to glide, while his helm allows him access to a great deal more information than most can see. Some of his skills are the result of long hours of training - remnants of his time before he lost the ability to perform those most strenuous of exercises. He is still highly capable of hiding himself from view, and his social and intellectual skills are as sharply honed as ever - if not moreso, due to the need to exercise them all the more. Complications: (You will) Fear the Dark: Even Sable feels uncomfortable with how closely he slips into his older, more terror-focused habits. When his friends or innocents are in danger, he sometimes reacts with excessive force and viciousness. Legacy of Corvids: Sable Raven is not a lone bird in this world, much to his mix of surprise and dismay. A whole cult family has grown up around the name he claimed for himself only six years ago, and their shared history is something he’s not quite comfortable with. Lone Survivor: Sable saw his world dying as he was cast into the universe. While for the most part, he manages to sublimate the sorrow and anger that this brought him, when unprepared, he can be struck with tears if he meets someone he once knew. Further, encounters with Omega and his Terminus forces cause him intense terror and fury. Not from Around Here: Sable Raven was born in a world now dead, one that never had the legacy of superheroes. Genetically identical to the original Raven with whom he shares his name, there is plenty of room for confusion and doubt in his life. Old Wounds: Without his Armor of Unkindness, Duncan Summers is unable to move freely – while he can walk and stand without significant issue for a few hours on end, any strenuous exercise or long-term journey leaves him in crippling pain. Most of the time, he uses a wheelchair to move about on longer trips.
