  3. Characters Name: The Courier Power Level: 7 (103/111PP) Trade-Offs: -1 Defense for +1 Toughness Unspent PP: 8 Progress to Bronze: 6/30 Alternate Identity: Daniel Farrell Age: 30 (June 1980; Apparent Age 30) Gender: Male Height: 5'11" Weight: 170 Eyes: Deep Dark Brown Hair: Black Description: History: Daniel Farrell has no memory of his father. All he had were a few old pictures and stories from his aloof mother. According to his mother, his father was a delivery man. A delivery man so great he got into trouble for it. Daniel's mother would ramble on saying that Daniel's father delivered them to safety. Her stories, despite being quite unusual, motivated him to be a delivery man too. He figured if he became a good delivery man someday, he might cross paths with his father. It was a silly idea yet it motivated him to become what he is today. Daniel, along with his mother, lived with his uncle Henry in New York. Henry had been taking care of his sister and nephew ever since they mysteriously appeared in his apartment. During his early twenties, Daniel was New York's fastest bike courier. Any package big or small, he would deliver within record time and in perfect condition. As a result, his employers assigned him the rush deliveries. Even rival bike courier companies knew of him. He was the city's best courier. His job was his passion and only the people closest to him knew why. The head of the company he worked for recognized his talent. He offered him a new job as an exclusive courier. Daniel was to transport items for his boss and his associates. He would have to transport things like art, artifacts, collectibles, documents, and ocassionally people. Nothing illegal, just valuable. Daniel accepted and was given a new suit, an SUV and a huge salary. It was easy money...for the most part anyway. There was one incident where he was waylaid by a group of armed men. He attempted to turn back, but they shot at his wheels. So he made a run for it hoping all they wanted was his cargo. Sadly, he hurt his foot diving into the ditch. The men caught him and beat him. Bloodied and with watery eyes, he saw the biggest of the men poised to knock him out. He braced himself and closed his eyes. The hit never came. When he opened his eyes he was home. He had teleported for the first time. He was excited and scared at the same time. But he was mostly tired and in pain, so he slept. He dreamt of a vast room filled with mist...and his father. In the morning he filed a police report and told his boss and family what happened. He lied on how he got away. After that day, life was different. His uncle became more protective while his mother acted stranger than usual. Daniel would spend time learning about his new power. He would also take lessons on self defense and basic us of weapons. He didn't want to be defenseless again. Years have passed and he has learned how to control his power. He still couldn't teleport as far as when he first did, but he was improving. He didn't know how he does it or where the power came from. He decided to keep his powers a secret from others just in case. He has since then worked as a freelance courier. His old boss would still hire him but only every now and then. Just once in his life did he ever fail to make a delivery. That failed delivery bothered him so much that he vowed to never let it happen again. Daniel was thirty when he dreamt of the room again. It was more of a vast white floor with mist instead of walls or a ceiling than a room. There were things in the "room" but he couldn't quite make it out. The dream had been so vivid that when he woke up, he swore that the place existed. He focused his thoughts on the room...then he vanished. He found himself in the very room of his dream. It felt weird there. He was stepping on the floor but felt no gravity. He tried moving around, but he couldn't tell if he were walked, teleported or floated. It was almost like he was still dreaming, but he was certain that this was really happening. That where he was is a real place. He purposely moved towards the mist but he'd always find himself still within the it's clearing. It was as if he were in another dimension. The room wasn't empty. The objects in his dream were there too. There was an office desk, a few briefcases and something huge covered with tarpoline. He opened the unlocked briefcases. Each were filled with crisp $100 bills. A hundred million? A billion? There was more money there than he cared to count. He then checked whatever was under the tarpoline. He found stacks of blue bricks, each wrapped in clear plastic. He took one and peeled off the plastic. Pieces of the brick broke off and crumbled. The bricks were some sort of hardened powder. Daniel estimated that there could be about 500 kilos of those bricks. He then approached the desk and pulled open a drawer. He was surprised to find old pictures of his mother. He teleported back home..into his mother's room asking for an explaination. She was only mildly startled when he appeared in front of her. She wouldn't respond to his questioning until she gave him a closer look. She noticed the blue powder on his shirt. She suddenly became hysterical. She demanded to know how it got there. He couldn't calm her down so he held her hand and brought her to the "room." He showed his mother the brick he had opened and asked her what it was. She calmed down and took a piece of brick from him and told her what she knew. Apparently she did not know much. The blue powder was a new drug during her time-when Daniel was still a baby and they were living in Freedom City. Daniel's father caught her using it and they had an argument. She fainted and was brought to the hospital. A week later she was back home and with Daniel. Daniel's frantic father appeared and told his mother to pack their things. He then teleported them to Daniel's uncle's apartment. Daniel's father tried to explain what was going on to his mother, but she was too stunned at the time. Daniel's mother returned the piece of brick after her story and they teleported back home. Daniel didn't quite know what to do with the revelation. He needed time to think. Regrettably, he was too busy keeping to himself he didn't notice what his mother was up to. She had pocketed handful of blue powder before coming back home. A day later while Daniel was out, Uncle Henry found his sister in her room unconscious. He rushed her to the hospital as fast as he could. She was in a coma. As soon as Daniel found out, he went to his mother. Weeks pass as Daniel stayed with his mother in the hospital. Seeing the effects of narcotics on his mother saddened and angered him. Daniel always thought his mother was just eccentric, but all along it was the effect of drugs. And now a new drug has caused her to be in a coma. Why would someone create such things and sell them to innocent people? And why were there so much in the "room." Did his father sell the drugs? Who made them? Uncle Henry could see the anguish in Daniel. He believed that Daniel's father had the answers Daniel was looking for. Uncle Henry was capable of taking care of his sister alone. He insisted that Daniel look for his father..to look for answers. He gave Daniel his blessing to leave. Daniel agreed. He knew too that he needed this. He promised himself to stop those responsible for the production of the new drug and all other narcotics. With a new sense of direction, he set out for Freedom City. Daniel's Father: Faramon King was an exceptional smuggler hired by an organization under The Labyrinth. With the powered vigilantes and rivals all around Freedom City, it was dangerous work. Many of his collegues were either cought or have gone missing. His superiors eventually needed better mules. Because of Faramon's loyalty to the organization, he was given a chance to undergo an experimental genetic modification procedure. He readily agreed and became their first success. The costly procedure allowed him access to another dimension where he can instantaneously shift in and out to reach any point in the planet and, unbeknown to Faramon, be located by the organization if he stays in one area long enough. Mostly within Freedom City ,but also around the world, he carried contraband such as drugs, fire-arms, tech and artifacts...and sometimes people (Living to transport, dead to dispose of) Because of his reliability and new power, the organization needed no other smuggler. Although by now he was wealthy, he had to stay low key to avoid suspicion from the authorities. Faramon had a girlfriend, Helen Farrell. A girl from New Jersey, she moved to Freedom City hoping for the big life. She was a freelance model who rarely found work. She was attractive, however she couldn't compete with so many other alluring young girls. She lived in together with Faramon in his West End apartment, and later on his Parkside condo. Though they lived under the same roof, they rarely spent their days together. They only saw each other late nights and early mornings. He was always too busy working for his superiors-even with his new powers. She never found out what Faramon really did for a living. He'd only say that he was a delivery man. And when they moved to the condo, he said that he used up all his savings for it. But Faramon wasn't the only one with secrets. Helen also kept something from him. She had a mild addiction to narcotics. She and her friends used designer drugs, and sometimes zoom, whenever they'd go out clubbing. On very rare occasions, she would resort to smoking zombie powder when she'd feel anxious or depressed. Despite having only a few hours with each other almost everyday, they managed to stay together and develop stronger feelings for each other. Helen was pregnant not long after they moved to Parkside. Daniel was three years old when his father received news from the organization. There was a new drug that had been developed and was already being distributed by the local dealers for field testing. He was told that if the drug feedback was positive, mass production would begin and the organization would handle it's distribution around the world. This meant that Faramon would be making more than ten times what he currently earns. This was definitely good news. In his excitement he decided to go home and give Helen and Daniel a surprise visit. Faramon was shocked to find Helen ingesting the new drug. It had been given to her by a friend who suggested she try it out. Faramon was furious and he and Helen had a fight. Daniel woke up from his afternoon nap hearing the argument and started crying. With all the commotion and the effects of the drug, Helen suddenly collapsed. She was quickly brought to the hospital where she began recovery. The doctors said she could have been comatose if she had not been brought to the hospital quickly. She was lucky, but she wasn't the same after that. Days later, the day the drug was ready to be delivered around the world, Faramon came home. He instructed Helen to get Daniel and pack. He told her they weren't safe and that they had to leave. Faramon knew Helen had a brother and demanded her to tell me where he lived. Suddenly there was a crash on their door, but Faramon,Helen and Daniel were gone. Next thing Helen knew, they were in her brother's apartment in New York. She was stunned. She just stared blankly at Faramon as he explained that there were people after him and somehow they could always find him. They would be safe as long as he was not near them, he continued to explain. Then he disappeared. Helen 's brother came home surprised to find his sister. He took care of her, and Daniel ever since. Personality & Motivation: Daniel's uncle and mother raised him to be a good person. He does his best to always do what is right. When it comes to deliveries, he is quite obsessed. He only failed a delivery once, and would not want it to happen again. He is driven to find more clues about his father. But first he has to get settled in Freedom City. Daniel is disgusted with people who manufacture, distribute and sell drugs. He is motivated to prevent as many people as he can to fall victim to it. Powers & Tactics: Ability to teleport himself and anything he touches with a total mass of 10000lbs within 200 miles. Can access a dimensional pocket where he can store and retrieve items. Daniel prefers to avoid trouble, moving away through traditional means. He know's how to defend himself and will do so when actively attacked. He'll only teleport away if he's greatly outmached or outnumbered, or if he is in the middle of transporting someone or something. Complications: Pocket Dimension: If there are those who have undergone the same procedure as his father, they will be able to access the pocket dimension. Traceable: Daniel and his family can be traced by the serial codes in the cash he found. His father knew not to spend it anymore. Daniel hadn't thought of that when he bought his own place in Freedom City. Mother/Drugs: His mother was able to pocket some of the drugs and is now in a coma. In Brief: A teleporting courier fighting against illegal drug dealers and manufacturers. 9. One morning, Adia recieves a call. "Good morning, dear, how are you doing?" Mr. Vinbar asked. "Good evening, Tito. Checking up on me?" she replies with a smile. "As a matter of fact, I'm feeling wonderful. How are things over there? I've believe now would be ok for me to go back there and help" "I've got news..oh but nevermind" "What is it, Tito?" "Well, there have been new developments in the investigation and we suspect a mutant murdered your sister," he revealed. "What? What have they found? Tell me!" Adia demanded, raising her voice and losing her cool. It was unlike her to act this way. She usually is composed and under control of her emotions. Then again, this past weeks have been strange. "I can't give you the details, I hope you understand. And it is important you stay there. It could be terribly dangerous for you here. We have no reason to believe that the murderer would follow you there." Again, Mr. Vinbar hasn't making sense to Adia. "How can you ask me to stay-" she was about to protest but was interrupted. "This is what you do: Stay there, take care of yourself and clear your head. I'm telling you, it's dangerous. We can handle things here. You don't have to get involved." "But I AM already involved. And there are still rumours that I had something to do with her death. Tito, you aren't making any sense" Adia says, almost screaming. "Adia, Adia, Adia," he replies, trying to soothe her "stay in Freedom. Trust me in this." Adia gave herself a few moments to breathe and then said "Ok, Tito. I believe you know what you're doing" "That's a good girl," Mr. Vinbar says. "Now I have to go, take care, dear. Good morning" "Goodnight" Later that day, Adia thought to cool herself in the bay. Swimming usually helps clear her mind, but the news coming from her uncle consumed her thoughts. Back in the Philippines, she had a number of stalkers, some of them suspected mutants. Even her sister had one or two mutant stalkers. Could it have been one of them? Why did her Tito give such vague information? Why did he even call if he wont tell her everything. It didn't add up. It never crossed her mind that her uncle could have been conspiring against her. She trusted him too much. All this stress gave her a headache. What she needed was a distraction..something new to do. She decided to go find somewhere to go tonight. Using her COMPACT, she found an online city guide and noted the possible places she could visit.
  10. Located at North Bay, several minutes away by car in between Trainor Airport and the North Bay Yacht Club, and by the bay itself, we find the Paloma Estate. The 2 storey high Spanish Colonial Mansion used to belong to the family of Adia's mother, and was the wedding gift from her family when she got married to Adia's father. Outside, it's walls have a beige stucco finish with a number of leaded window panels and it's roof is composed of clay tiles. Found on the beyond the yard facing the bay there is a dock that can accommodate a small yacht. It is positioned a distance away from the house, so the view of the Great Bay from the beach front would not be obstructed. Upon entering the front door, there is a large circular hallway, about 20ft in diameter. Running along the side of the hall is a curved varnish oak staircase leading to the second floor, which is visible as one enters the hall. Hanging from the ceiling is a wrought iron chandelier, and underneath it in the center of the hall is a small stone fountain. In the first and second floor there are arched doors leading to different parts of the mansion. Among the rooms typical in a mansion, like a master bedroom with luxurious en suite bathroom or a fully fitted kitchen, can be found a library, a music room, wine cellar and other utility and function rooms. The whole interior of the mansion is accented by Spanish colonial furniture and various paintings-one of those being Juan Luna's Parisan Life. Surrounding the around 230000 sq ft mansion are palm and fig trees. In front of the house is a private driveway where we now find Adia's limousine. Adia stepped out the limousine, Manong opening the door for her. She was hugely impressed with the sight of the mansion. It was beautiful. Excited to see the interiors, she went inside and left Manong to deal with her luggage. She could smell a faint scent of earth, old wood and breeze from the bay. The smell reminded her of the various beaches she's been to. It was the smell of peace and tranquility. It lifted her spirits up. Wanting to save exploring the rest of the house for the afternoon, she looked for the masters bedroom-Manong following behind lugging her bags. Upon finding the room, she had Manong leave her bags and wait outside. She did her own unpacking. Emerging from the walk-in closet, she gave herself a few minutes to enjoy the king sized four poster bed. She was unusually, authentically happy. It was like a great weight has been removed from her chest. With her father and sister gone, she lost the chance to prove to him that she was the better daughter. But instead of seeing it that way, she saw it as freedom. Indeed.. "New home, new life," she mused. Having creased her attire while swimming in an ocean of softness, she changed clothes before venturing the rest of the mansion. She wore white, loose, flowing blouse and pants. Wanting to feel the terracotta tiled floors, she went barefoot. The rest of the day was spent exploring every inch of her new mansion. A few days have passed and Adia settled in quite well. She had Manong assist her in turning one of the larger rooms into a workshop/laboratory/communications suite. While she did all the instructing and planning, he did all the heavy lifting, installing, wire connecting, and other physical work Adia's delicate hands refused to do. She also did a bit of reading up on the city and it's citizens (she wasn't too pleased learning about how supers ran the city, one even being downtown itself, but she was happy with her home, and that's all that mattered) but most of her time was spent relaxing and forgetting whatever stress she had before coming to Freedom. The maids also arrived and they did all the daily cleaning and cooking. There had been a bit of redecorating here and there, but most of the mansion stayed the same. Adia was home.
  11. Any character interested in giving Adia a tour around the city? The thread will start with Adia getting settled in her new home. Afterwards she'll go somewhere in the city, maybe in a casino, opera house or restaurant or at Parkside while she visits her unit there. That's where your character(s) can bump into her and give her a tour. Any PC welcome, but expect a fight when she discovers your character isn't human will be needing a ref if fighting ensues will post in the ooc thread when pc's can come in New Home, New Life
  12. May 22 - Adia arrives in Freedom City in New Home, New Life
  13. OOC for New Home, New Life I'm not much of a writer so I would appreciate comments and suggestions in writing New Home, New Life is Adia's arrival to Freedom City and when she's settled in, other PC's may join to give her a tour:)
  14. The plane landed with no trouble. Adia disembarked her customized G4 jet and walked towards the limousine waiting for her there. "Good morning, ma'm. Did you have a pleasant flight, ma'm?" asked Adia's driver as he opens the door for her. Entering the limo, she replies "It was fine. And,manong, do please be quick," in a haughty tone. Manong, a man in his late forties wearing a barong tagalog, quietly closed the door and hurriedly assisted in placing her bags in the trunk. Manong is Adia's all-around chaperone. Mostly he drives and runs errands for Adia. Though he occasionally does menial tasks, he doesn't mind. He is well compensated for his troubles. He also reveres Adia so he is inspired to always do his best. Inside the limousine, Adia holds up her COMPACT and dials her uncle's number. After a few rings, he picks-up and a live feed of Mr. Vinbar appears on the COMPACT's screen. "Hello, Adia! Good morning! How was your flight?" greets Mr. Vinbar, his cheerful expression visible in the video. "I suppose you've landed at Freedom City by now," "Good evening, tito! I had a pleasant flight. On the way here I read up on some books and articles on the city and found some information quite tragic. I'm glad there are some parts of Freedom are untouched by...Tito, you look like you just came from a meeting, don't we hold meetings in the mornings? Is there something I should know?" Adia asks, noticing the shuffling of figures and shadows behind her uncle that tells her he just came out of a board room. "Oh, don't worry about it, dear. There was another transport rally and traffic was so terrible nobody made it in time for today's meeting. We couldn't postpone the meeting to another date so we held it at night instead," Mr. Vinbar answers. His voice cool and relaxed as always. "But it doesn't look like you're in the office, Tito" "I AM in the office, dear. We had to hold the meeting at the 3rd floor board room," Mr. Vinbar assures her. "We had maintenance repair the lights 56th floor. Apparently there was some faulty wiring or something. Hmmm. Come to think of it, I don't remember you ever visiting the 3rd floor." "Why wasn't I informed about the 56th floor? We're Lawin Tech for heaven's sake! Things like faulty wiring shouldn't happen in our building!" Adia says, raising her voice but not in anger. She rarely raised her voice in the presence of her uncle and she could never directly get mad at him. "I didn't feel there was a need to inform you about such trivial matter. The one responsible for the oversight has already been relieved and everything is back in order. Forget about it dear," he replies, smiling. "Enough of that...I mean, look at you! You're dressed as if you're about to buy a company." Mr. Vinbar chuckles. Adia rarely wore casual clothing and reserved dresses for parties and dinners. Indeed, her attire looked like she was on her way to a corporate meeting. "I feel comfortable in this ensemble, what is it to you?" Adia joked smiling. "I'm here at North Bay. Manong tells me the Mother's family estate is just a few minutes from here." "So you're not buying a new company?" Mr. Vinbar laughs. "Speaking of the estate, I called ahead and told the house keepers that they no longer have to stay there. I had dollars wired to their accounts so they could buy a decent house somewhere in the city. In a few days the help from your house here will be arriving there. I decided instead of hiring new maids, I'd send them over to you, that way you'd be comforted by familiar face," he smiles. "What else, oh I also hired private security for the estate. The company's name is Stronghold. I'll e-mail you the details and contact numbers. I hear that Titan security is the best, you should look them up if you like." "Tito! You don't have to baby me like that. I've lived alone, out of the country before. I can take care of myself, Tito," she complains. "I apologize. I know you're a very responsible young woman. But with your father gone, I feel like I have the responsibility to take care of you." Adia was silent. The mention of her father brought pain in her chest. Her face did not show the pain, but to Mr. Vinbar it was obvious in her silence. "I'm sorry, dear. I know these are hard times, but don't worry your heart too much. I'll handle everything here for you. And when everything settles down you can come back." He says in concern. "And of my sister? I know people think I had something to do with her murder. I know you told me that coming here is going to make things easier, but it feels like I'm running away from the problem. It doesn't make sense." She says, with sadness in her voice. "Adia, Adia, Adia...you need not worry what the public would think. You can't let your feelings cloud your judgement. I've hired the best to solve your sister's murder. The truth will reveal itself. In time everything will be alright. You're not running away from anything" he said in his cool soothing voice. Adia felt that Mr. Vinbar wasn't making any sense nor explaining his advice very well, but for some reason he sounded right. Because he was always at her father's side and a close family friend, she respects his advice and decisions. Even if what he says are cliched, she does not notice. There are even times when she looks up to him. In fact, he is one of the few people to whom she does not fake/hide her emotions with/from. "Well, you do always know what's best," she sighed. "Anyway, we've just arrived at the estate. Goodnight, tito." "I see..let's continue this discussion some other time if you like. I'm always here for you, dear. Good morning, Adia. You have a new life ahead of you, be strong."
  15. Date: May 22nd, 2009 Adia awoke to the sound of the alarm coming from her COMPACT (Computer-Optimized Multi-Protection and Communication Tech). Staring out the window, she didn't have to look at the time to know it was around five in the morning. Adia convinced herself to get up despite wanting to stay under the silk blanket and lying on her soft fluffy bed which made her feel like she were floating on water. It was not that her bed was so comfortable (she was already used to such luxuries) but because she had such a wonderful dream. She dreamt of happier times with her father and hoped that she would dream the same dream if she went back to sleep. However, she knew it was unlikely for her to have the same dream twice. She arched her back, stretched her arms and curled her legs then slowly sat up. "New city, new home, new life,"she thought to herself. She got up making her blanket which was wrapped around her slide to the floor. Simultaneously, she loosened her silk and lace pale red nightgown letting it flow almost like water down her slender figure. Adia then walked to the bathroom to take a shower. After Adia completed her morning rituals, she stepped out of the bedroom wearing a black low-cut blouse, slacks that showed the curves of her lower back, hips and thighs, a pair of black high-heeled toe-less shoes and minimal jewelry. She made her way to the leather recliner that was there and sat down. In front of her was an empty desk that protruded from the floor. Beside her was a side table with tea and toast prepared for her. Sipping her Tieguanyin tea, she placed her COMPACT in front of her, screen facing up. She presses a button then her COMPACT projects a holographic image of a screen and a keyboard. As if typing on air, she composed and sent a few e-mails, and finalized some documents. Just as she finished, there was a buzz from the intercom. "Good morning, Ms. Angara, I hope you are having a splendid morning," said the voice. "This is Captain Villamor. We would like to inform you that we will be landing at Trainor Airport, Freedom City shortly and request that you prepare for the descent. The local time is 6:57 in the morning. The outside temperature is..." The captain continued on while Adia stopped listening. Shortly, a female flight attendant entered the cabin and moved the side table away and exited the cabin. "It's about time," she tells herself.

    benefit (wealth)

Well, my idea is to use benefit wealth mainly in the beginning of the character's career..to say what he has attained when he materializes. Whether he has a home or not in the beginning, or a car or a bike. Ofcourse refs will have control on allowing such things to be aquired. I mean it'd be unreasonable for a character to buy lots here and there in every adventure or buy cars. but if it's sound and fits his story, then why not? a character can't just go to a store or shop all the time. and even if they can buy buildings, they'd have to go through sellers, other potential buyers and all that. The benefit of spending eps for equipment would be the instant aquisition of such items.. while for wealth characters would need a good excuse. but mostly it would be for flavor text the only drawback would be that there would be extra work to see that it's not abused/ to ref if aquiring items is reasonable.

if I may ask, what's wrong with the current wealth rule?

What's going to happen then? Does that mean characters should spend EP's on their own homes and vehicles that their wealth level could generally have? Also for celphones and the like? For my character, I was planning her to buy a loft at Parkside, just to say that she's got one there. It'll be used as a venue for meeting ppl or what, but not as a base of operations. the same with a limo/jet and yacht (if wealth 5 is enough for such). I like the house rule on wealth as it is, but if it's going to be changed, we need to make the necessary adjustments.
