  1. (GM) The world seemed to be at an awkward angle, everything did and it messed with your mind. Humans expected things to be vertical and horizontal, not whatever odd angled funhouse stuff his ship had become. Of course, in perfect funhouse style, there were hiddeous groans and noises as bulkheads and hull were being exposed to stress they had never been designed for. Holding on to the desk, Eric Mathers stood in waist deep water as he held the jury rigged shortwave above the water. This would be his last message before he had to leave the radio room and try to move to somewhere he could help people escape. He could hear the fury of the storm still battering the hull as waves rocked the steeply angled freighter like a toy in a bath tub. "Mayday. Mayday!..." he gave his message for the last time. Hopefully someone heard it on the abnormal channel. Of course, hopefully whoever heard it could do something about it too.
  2. With Elias sitting down along with Eileen, Vicki could at least user her phone to say hi. She hated being rude, although if the guy wasn't going to look at her, there wasn't much she could do about it. Actually, he seemed kind of stoned, or perhaps with that bruising, concussed. She punched into her phone and held it towards him, hoping that the small speaker was loud enough to get his attention. The canned British voice translated her text, "Hi. I'm Vicki. Just so you know I'm mute, so if you're not looking at me or close enough to hear this thing, I can't really communicate with you. Are you okay?" Looking back at Eileen, she nodded and got an embarassed look on her face, furriously typing on the phone, she let it speak for her, "Oh. Mm. Gee. You have no idea. I eat all the time. It's the most horrible thing. I think I've scared some dates away with them thinking that I'd eat them next. I end up going hungry on most dates now."
  3. Thinking about, Vicki realized that she probably looked riddiculous. Laying on the floor, her butt pushed up against the bed and legs bent up on top of it, she also realized that it wasn't that uncomfortable. Kind of like sitting in a chair that had tipped over. She really was going to have to get back into the gym, that should have been something she could have done in her sleep. Oh well, a little humility and embarassment went a long way towards desire to practice more. With her feet sitting in Eileen's lap she thought about her reply, <"well... I did see a boy turn into a bear in the cafeteria. I don't think he meant to do it on purpose either. I mean... he ended up with most of his lunch all over him."> <"I guess on one hand, I expect a lot of the same that happens in any other school. You still have to take classes, even if some of them are called things like Translocational Theory, or Energy Emission 101. So that part won't be too much different. I kind of expected some of the cliques to be a lot more catty, you know, when you can do some pretty mean things to people. Like Casey... she can move really really fast. How hard would it be for her to pants someone? They'd never even know she had been there. Not that she would, she seems really sweet... but just saying, there's a lot of potential for it."> <"I don't know, I expect we're going to be using our powers a TON! That's what Siren seemed to think at least, when she was trying to get me to come here. Did you ever see that one... um... with the superhero school in the sky? I kind of thought it was going to be like that. Although... it hasn't so far.">
  4. Reaching over to touch Casey she flashed her a quick message, <"okay, for the record, I totally didn't mean to do that. The scaring part at least..."> Then she turned in her seat again and waved Elias over. To emphasize, she pointed to her mouth and then shook her head. However, it didn't even look like he was looking at them, so any attempts she was making were pretty much doomed to fail. Not quite sure what to make of it all, she paused, tilting her head and wondering if she should just walk over and stand in front of him. However, that would be rude to the girls at her table. Well... she had waved him over, and she hoped that he understood her meaning. Other than that, if he wasn't going to look there was little she could do to communicate with him short of goin up and touching him. Besides that, she really did want to hear what Sakurako's idea was.
  5. (GM) For a moment, the static increased, then the signal locked in. There was a man's voice, sounding surreal and calm. It was more impressive given the roaring sounds of a dying ship that transmitted with his message. "Mayday. Mayday! This is the Freighter Glencairn. We have sustained heavy damage from lightning and most systems are out. The ship is taking on water and we are listing badly. If you can hear this frequency, please repond. Our last reported postion is 39.06, -73.24, the storm is blew us West at an unknown speed. I am going to repeat this message as long as I can. Mayday. Mayday!..." There was a loud noise and the radio broadcast sounded like someone had dunked the microphone under water.
  6. <"Well you at least have curves."> Vicki responded glancing to her own rather plain figure. <"Well I was on track to at least try for the Olymic team, but dad got transferred and you know... military salaries and all. Not enough to board me with my coach. Besides, I wouldn't have left my mom and sisters alone. Anyway, each time it happened, I had to learn new routines and new ways to do things. So it was kind of a setback every two years. I was just starting to get some of my competitive routines down when we moved last. I don't know, I think in the end it was for the best. I really want to help people, and I'm not sure if that would have been the best way to do it."> Then she held up a finger, made a split finger sign for watch me and hopped off the bed. Rocking her head back and forth, she quickly bunched up her hair, redoing the pony tail at the back to make sure it didn't fall into her eyes. Then, she bent over backwards onto her hands into a hand stand. Turning back to face Eileen she flashed her a smile then walked on her hands back to the bed. Slowly she bent her legs forward until they were resting on the bed, her hands still on the floor. With a push, she propelled herself up, intending to land back gracefully on the bed. Yet... it didn't quite work that way. Perhaps she was out of practice, perhaps it was something on the floor. All she knew, was that instead of ending up flipped on the bed, she ended up in a heap on the floor, laughing at her mishap. It had not been the most graceful of moves. Stretching her foot which was still nominally over the bed, she touched Eileen with her half sock clad toes, <"Well, that's what happens when you aren't in practice. So maybe we'll have to watch more movies instead. What movies do you like?"> (Failed Actobatics: http://orokos.com/roll/283214 1d20+10 = 11)

  8. Vicki was typing a response to Sakurako as she started to sense someone was watching her. Duh! After the stupid teleporting thing, nearly scaring Casey half to death, they probably were. One thing she had noticed over the years was that she was very sensitive to people who were watching her, or especially when something was about to happen. Still in the middle of a cafeteria of super powered teens what could go wrong. Actually, that thought wasn't nearly as comforting as she thought it might have been. Looking around she saw a boy, perhaps Greek or Italian?, standing staring at her. It was a little creepy, but she decided to just let him look. She hit play on the phone, "That would be cool Sake-Rake! It's hard when there is a lot of people to get them to hear the phone. Volume doesn't go to 11 on it." Hearing the phone's rendition of Sakurako's name she cringed, but there was little to do and she offered a smile in appeasement. Then as Eileen made introductions, Vicki smiled and included in her phone transmitted voice, "Eileen is my roommate, I think it's going to be a pretty awesome year. Or what's left of it. So what's this idea?" Before she could answer, there was a deep voice behind her talking in some kind of Geordie accent. Before she could ask him what he had said, he announced himself and she had finally figured out that he was apologizing for staring. Considering that it was kind of creepy, she figured that was understandable. As he was too far away to actually touch and her phone wasn't loud enough to communicate over the dim in the cafeteria to anyone not standing close, she gave him two thumbs up and waved him to come over.
  9. Hestina would be thrilled to get that chance!
  10. That was a really good idea. She had spent so much time working on it that it would be a shame to power it on for a grade only to find out that it didn't work at all. Looking at Eileen she gave her a mock look of horror before thumbing a message into her phone. "No. No breaking. This took me all afternoon to make. Sakurako helped me get it all working, so I owe her big time! Lunch does sound good though." As she walked out of the lab with the three girls, she flicked the switch and listened to the sweet sounds of static coming through the small speaker. With apparant glee she turned the small knob as she tried to tune in a station. Of course, she hit something that sounded like it was playing music from the 40's, interesting, but hardly what she wanted to listen too. Another turn or three and she started to get into either a talk radio section, or Sakurako wasn't kidding when she said that she'd laid things out to receive short wave. As she adjusted the dial very slowly a garbled message came into sudden clarity before fading back to obscurity, "Mayday. Mayday! This i.. he... Gl...cair..." For a moment, she thought that it was an anouncement for a May Day parade, then shaking her head she realized that it probably wasn't. If only the radio could get the signal in better than it was. Wait, why was she being so dense, Sakurako was an electronics wizard and she'd be able to get in it if anyone could. She pushed the radio to the young genius and pointed at the radio frantically.
  11. There was a wobble in the Vicki's mental voice as she had never quite considered that, <"I suppose so... I hadn't really considered it. I mean, when I go there I don't want to hear my phone, or anything really, and I know that I can always open the door back up. However, I guess if something happened to me, I'd just be gone for a long while. I know that I can sleep in there, so I don't think even if I passed out that I'd come out."> She tapped her feet together considering the ramifications, then the invulnerability of youth kicked in and she shruged dismissing the idea as something that might happen to other people. <"I know that people can't get out unless I let them. I mean, there were some bank robbers that I stopped back in Meridian... I wasn't sure what to do with them, so I popped them into the portal and walked to the police department and dumped them on the front door. It was pretty awesome... well other than I think one of them rifled through my clothes. It was a kind of 'ewww' moment. I suppose I should work on trying to make two separate spaces. One for me and one for anyone I place in there."> For a moment longer she considered the dangers of her powers, but the alure of a new roomie and someone who seemed really nice to talk with won out, <"so what do you like to do for fun?">
  12. Gotcha! Then all is good with the world! Reading comprehension fail!
  13. Mad, can you edit the line about going on the rescue? We were just about to post the radio turning on. That'll give us the actual go help people part.
  14. Vicki's eyes widened to nearly the size of plates as she was horrified to cause such a reaction, She pointed to the table that Eileen was about to walk into, and then made a fist and made little circles with it in front of her chest the mortified look still plastered all over her face. She hadn't really thought that anything would surprise people in Claremont, given all the crazy things she had already seen. Then again, she hadn't really thought either. Being able to have people accept her communication had been such a breath of fresh air today that her natural wariness over her powers had been suspended. Yet now she knew that she was still going to have to careful, but more in a responsible way. She made the circular gesture with her hand a few more times before dropping to her hands and knees to look for the missing phone. Thankfully, it had just slid under a table, which she sheepishly pointed out to Eileen. She kind of feared going to get it, because if it was broke that was going to totally stink. Instead, she smiled and held her hands out to take the large tray of food from her roommate. [Notice Roll: http://orokos.com/roll/282761 (7 +10 = 17)
  15. <"Well... if you ever have trouble sleeping, I think I can probably help."> she replied. <"Well that, or if you ever want to do one of those modern performance art pieces where you pretend to be a statue... I'm your girl! I mean not that I do that, but I can make other people freeze. It's kind of like a brain loop sort of thing."> <"I don't really remember a moment like WOW! I can do this. You know? I mean it's more like do you remember learning to walk? Not really, you just kind of started doing it and it seemed natural. Well... except the natural part. It didn't take too long to realize that most people don't like having words in their head. Most people also get kind of jittery about being touched too. Add those together and it didn't take me too long to realize that for the most part, powers were a no no when people could see me."> Vicki sat back again, leaning against the wall of the room but still keeping contact. She paused for a moment, a partial smile crossing her face, <"well mostly. The pocket did make a pretty great place for hide and seek... and as I got older, an AWESOME place to go for privacy."> A faint blush crept into her cheeks, unbidden, and some memories of those moments flitted through her mind.
  16. Vickey tapped Casey on the shoulder, <"That's my roommate"> she quickly sent as she removed her hand to wave at Eileen. Even though she waved her hand repeatedly, Eileen didn't seem to be paying attention. Instead she was glued to her phone and looked to be aimlessly wandering through the cafeteria. She looked over to Casey, shook her head, amusement showing plainly in her expression <"I better go get her out of her technological dream before she spills that all over someone.">. It was just a moment longer before she vanished from the table and appeared next to Eileen, gently grabbing her arm and hoping that she didn't startle her roomie.
  17. She hadn't quite thought of that before, although with a school of heroes and heroes in training, there was bound to be some kind of Mad Scientist types around she considered as they walked through the manicured grounds. She whistled, another sound she was able to make, Claremont was certainly better maintained than any of the base schools that she had attended. With spring in full bloom, the cherry blossoms were brilliant white and the fragrance was nearly intoxicating. Even as she was tapping a reply into her phone, she was looking all around, drinking in the scenery with her eyes and grinning like a child at Christmas. Her phone responded, "That's not a bad idea... I should talk to one of them, and yes, I never had to worry about the Children should be seen and not heard quote. Well once, a lady my mom had for tea. She was mortified when she found out I was mute and I got tons of cookies from her for weeks after." Then one last quick message, "you're graduating this spring?"
  18. Vicki looked over the tattoos curiously and after a few moments of inspection, she shrugged. She had never seen anything like that before. Putting her hand on Eileen's knee she opened the link again. <"I don't know... I had my powers pretty much from birth. Although I was never really able to do much with them until I was like eight or nine. I really don't remember when. I mean they just kind of grew in kind of like learning to ride a bike and everything else you learned growing up... not that I think I qualify for grown up or anything."> She traced the design of the tattoo, marveling at how intricate it was. Perhaps it was some kind of makeover gone wrong she thought to herself causing a wide smile to creep across her face. Brushing her ponytail back behind her neck she flashed thoughts to her roommate again. <"That is strange though, were there any other side effects? I mean, mine seemed to really pick up power when I started to mature... physically... ya know?">
  19. Yeah! I was glad you changed your mind Mad! We have a few more posts before we get rolling in earnest. Enough to get the radio powered on and start the disaster a brewing.
  20. <"I wasn't sure what to expect either. I mean I have been to a LOT of schools. So making friends has never been too hard, it's just something you learn to do. Mom talked with me a lot about staying here, I think she was excited to have more of the house to herself... I have three other sisters, so any peace and quiet she could get was a positive I think. Especially with Dad gone for so long. But even with all that, I've always lived at home while going to school."> She looked over shyly at Eileen, <"I think I'm going to like this though."> After smiling at her new friend, Vicki shook her head in a bemused fashion, her dark ponytail bobbing behind her. <"No, I don't think I'm any of those categories. I mean, I suppose everyone thinks they are normal and all. I don't know, I got along well enough with most of the people in the schools I've been too. It helped that I have like lots of different interests. I mean Gymnastics, Soccer, Reading, Chess, Music, Camping, kind of all over the board."> As her voice tailed to a whisper, she suddenly got a funny look on her face as something Eileen had said registered with her. <"Wait. You just got your powers six weeks ago? Did you fall into a vat of radioactive goo? No... wait! You... got bit by a mutant light bulb! Um... swallowed a blue ray player? Okay, maybe I stink at guessing origins.">
  21. Hestina Hestina is a young pacifistic hero in training who boasts dimensional powers as well as some limited mental abilities. She maintains a secret identity as Vicki Adams who is a student at the prestigious Claremont Academy and is mute. History Hestina started her career under a different Nome de Plume, Siren. However that career ended very quickly as the real Siren met with her and convinced her that she should really look to operate under another name. With some coaching and help, she changed to the name Hestina and began her career as a hero stopping small crimes. However, fate, and her father’s transfer to Loney Point Naval Base saw the young hero enrolling in Claremont Academy where she is pursuing both an education and further training for her abilities. Motivation Much of Hestina’s motivation comes from the very real examples her father set in the Navy SEAL’s. He won several awards for bravery and is an iconic figure in the service. However, her own personality seems to be geared to helping people and while her father found home in the service, the advent of her powers opened doors too her that would not have been otherwise available. Costume Hestina favors an outfit that has the colors of her namesake butterfly, black and white. Currently, she favors functional and durable cargo pants loaded with pockets for things that she might need. Her top is a heavy leather vest that covers her torso and provides some protection and certainly modesty required in a super powered battle. Finally, she has elbow length white gloves and a white mask to complete the outfit. Everything she has, is reasonably priced and easily acquired. Powers Hestina has two major powers which manifest themselves in different ways. The first is a tactile telepathy. Currently, that ability is very weak, but it does allow her to communicate with others if she’s touching them. Additionally, she has learned to incapacitate people via touch my overloading their minds with volumes of noise. She is rather cautious about any use of her mental powers as many people view invasion of the mind as worse than most crimes that could be committed. Her second power is the ability to manipulate dimensions on a local level to both move short distances by bending space, or creating permanent pockets which she can access as needed. She has carved out a small semi-permanent home in the dimensional space that she uses to transport things, house her stuff, and hang out in when she wants some privacy. Allies · Siren: Hestina started out her hero career naming herself Siren in a self-deprecating nod to her inability to speak. The actual Siren, sympathetic to a new hero and perhaps feeling bad about making her change her name, took Hestina under her wing. · Monica Rausa: Best friend, and chief conspirator in most inappropriate hijinks. 22. Vicki sighed a little, getting a happy little grin on her face as she did. As Eileen had moved, she placed her hand on hers to open the channel again. <"Yeah, he's my father. I've never known anyone like him either. So I guess I have quite a road to follow!"> She turned her own phone to Eileen, showing her a very busy Pinterest site which showed Vicki along with another girl about her age making goofy poses in front of an old AMC Gremlin. Other pictures showed various exploits of the two girls on trips shopping, posing in front of some tanks, shots at some sporting events, and other photos. <"I guess you can keep up with anyone. Although, doesn't mean that you don't miss them. Still, every new place means new people and new experiences. Like say this one... going pretty well I'd say."> Looking around the room she grinned, <"Definately very good. So what are you studying for? I'm going to try for some kind of premed... well and being a hero.">
  23. Vicki stood back looking at the odd assortment of students gathering here. She definitely would have to remember this location as THE place to meet up. On the down side, not that there was more than a couple of people, her ability to communicate was limited. Not from any lack of desire, but by the time she was able to enter a message into her phone, the conversation had typically moved on and her mental abilities seemed to only work one person at a time. So she nodded in agreement and signed that they were going to walk over to the registration office. Hoping that someone there would know what she was trying to communicate.
  24. Vicki squeezed Eileen's shoulder gently, she understood loss. Perhaps not like losing your father, but she'd left behind so many friends that she assumed that Eileen must be going through the same. Long distance relations really didn't work very well... although if you could fly faster than the speed of sound... <"I'm sorry about the move. I know how rough those can be. You get settled into somewhere and then BAM! Everything is different and there's new people and new cliques and your friends are still doing the same things you wanted to keep doing."> She leaned back with Eileen, pulling her hand back, but sitting shoulder to shoulder worked well enough for her to still communicate. She didn't want to put her feet in the bed, because she still had on her sandals and that would be rude, so she rested her feet on the edge as she continued 'talking'. <"Yeah, my dad is like a war hero. He's been all over the place, and... well that means that I was all over the place. I don't think I have been in the same state for more than 2 years that I can remember. It's hard to keep in touch with people, but I still have a couple that I reach out too. If you left someone, you know, that might be an incentive to practice the whole flying thing?">
  25. No problems. That'll give me some time for a few PP to get some swimming and a variable pool of common equipment. :)
