  1. Wander's heartbeat sped up as she assessed the new threat, someone more obviously dangerous than the man with the useless gun. She poised for a fight, ready to meet any challenge, but didn't strike yet. She knew she was supposed to fight, but he was alive, or sort of, and it threw her. "Don't be stupid," she warned. "Step off, or I'll hurt you, probably bad. You don't want that."
  2. "That's God's honest truth," Erin said with feeling. "I mean, you don't want to say anything because everyone will look at you like you're nuts, but if they just took five seconds to look around and see everything they had to be grateful for... I mean for pity's sakes, they're superheroes, living in the richest country in the world, with freedom and opportunity that other people can't even dream of. Can't they just... just shut up for five seconds about their tiny little ridiculous problems?" She shook her head. "But I know that if I were them, lived like them, I'd be exactly the same way."
  3. Erin's initiative for Round two is 20
  4. "Um... probably not." Stesha blinked. "I mean, they're just glass, just vases. And you don't want to see the bouquet spilled." She mustered a little laugh. "Sounds like it's going to be a pretty wild party. I can put down some ticka-tack to stick them to the tables, but I don't know what it'll do to the finish. The best idea is probably to keep them away from where you're going to be doing party games." She set down her large arrangement on a table, then reached into the box to pull out a corsage of three black rosebuds and baby's breath. "Here's the mommy corsage," she said, handing it over to Merry. "For the mom-to-be. Jack didn't specify if he wanted one, but it's part of our usual baby shower package. You should put it in the refrigerator until she arrives."
  5. Her arms full of dark flowers, Stesha craned her neck to look around at the strange building. From behind her, Paul sidled up, similarly burdened. "I thought this was for a goth baby shower," he muttered under his breath. Stesha shrugged, though she had the same question. "Maybe it is," she whispered back. "To each their own. We just provide the arrangements." She was glad she'd dug up the dark swirled-glass vases for the arrangements, anything white would've just made them look like funerary arrangements. "What time does the party start?" she asked Merry, raising her voice to normal volume. "If it starts late, we'll want to feed the flowers now, so the water will be clear again by the time it starts."
  6. Erin nodded agreement, looking at her own meal of fresh fruit and cold-cut sandwiches with fresh-baked brownies and cold milk. "You only really appreciate having as much fresh food as you want after you spend awhile without. Even cafeteria food is a lot better than I remember it ever being." She cracked a small smile. "Maybe that's just because this is a classy place."
  7. Erin was quiet for a minute, still pulling herself into check after the intense workout. She nodded at the instructions, hoping that Mr. Archer would know where she could get some pumpkins, or anything that would mean not having to go back into the doom room. "Thank you for teaching me," she finally said, looking up and meeting Thunderstanding's eyes for the first time since the lesson proper had started. "I'll try to remember everything you said today."
  8. "Sounds great," Stesha said, even as she looked around to see if Jack was in sight. He wasn't, of course. He'd taken her for a ride to get a better deal on some flowers, but at least he'd taken her on half a date in exchange. She still didn't know how to feel about that. Instead of thinking about it, she pulled the van around the side and had her assistant Paul start unloading the flowers. Despite her own qualms, she'd dyed the roses herself, as promised, and was quite pleased with the deep shade of maroon she'd achieved. Black in most lights, they were still red roses, down at the heart. She had her professional pride, after all. As she hopped out of the car and checked the invoices, she waited for Merry to catch up. "Just tell us where we'll going and we'll have these set up in two shakes. I remember we set this up with..." She made a show of checking her invoice. "Jack, that's right. Is he around today?"
  9. "Uh, sure, go ahead." Erin straightened up her place at the table, tucking away wrappers and pulling her soda closer to her, a mostly symbolic gesture to make room, given that there was plenty of room. She wasn't quite sure what to make of Hope, but at least the other girl's presence at the school meant that she wasn't the only one having trouble fitting in. Part of her wanted to ask what it was like coming to a world that was so different while leaving family and friends in danger, but mostly she wasn't sure she wanted to know. Erin knew she wouldn't have been able to leave if she'd had any chance to help her family. What did it take to leave them behind?
  10. Using Skill Mastery for Intimidate, which gives her a result of eighteen. Let's see what kind of cajones this pretend thug has. =)
  11. Erin stared at the thug, then looked over at Mr. Archer, then back. She took a step towards the mugger. "I'm a superhero," she told the pretend thug. "You can shoot me with that and it won't hurt me. But if you shoot me, I will hit you, and it will kill you. I'll be sorry, a little, but it won't be my fault. Put down the gun and run away, and I won't follow you."
  12. As Thunderstanding became more aggressive in her moves, Wander's moves became less controlled, more honestly aggressive as well. There were no more punches like that very first one, but as she dodged and jumped to avoid being hit, she started smacking the mitts considerably harder than she had been before. A normal person holding the targets likely would've had to pull back or risk muscle strain or hand injury. Her face was set, her brow furrowed, and still she did not meet her teacher-cum-opponent's eyes.
  13. "Well, if all we have to do is hit it..." With a shrug, Erin stepped forward, up to the big metal device. "Tell me if the ceiling starts to cave in or something, okay?" Without bothering to put on gloves, she fisted her hands and held them together, delivering a two-fisted punch directly into the center of the gong.
  14. Wander shrugged. "I guess so," she said. She didn't really think she was going to enjoy whatever was coming next, but she was at least willing to play along. Even if she'd made a fool of herself or would make one yet, at least the test was almost over. She was ready to get out of this strange room. "What do I have to do?" she asked cautiously.
  15. Okay, the first three I make with Skill Mastery (10+11=21). She fails the fourth.
  16. Erin dropped back into the defensive crouch again as the world disappeared, shaking her head to try and clear it both of adrenaline and the voice that argued that she'd have a better chance of saving the baby if she dropped the son of a bitch who'd taken it in the first place. She probably wouldn't have done it, knowing she was still in the simulation and being watched, but in some ways knowing he wasn't real would've made it easier. "What do I have to do next?" she asked, her breath sounding loud in her own ears.
  17. Erin crouched in the middle of the floor for a minute, her heart slamming against her rib cage. She realized how foolish she looked, but for the life of her she couldn't straighten up and pull her head back into the training. With all her heart she wanted out of this room and back up on the surface, under the sun, but she couldn't exactly back out now. She'd come too far for that, and it wasn't like she had anyplace else to go. Just as the silence was starting to get really uncomfortable, she pushed herself to her feet and nodded that the test should continue.
  18. She nodded, unfolding her arms and shaking them out as she looked around at the cold gray walls. "Just like, running and jumping and stuff, trying to get away? I guess I can do that. How do I know which way I need to go?" It was odd talking like that in an empty room, but she'd heard a few stories about the Doom Room, and she knew it wouldn't be empty for very long. More for something to do than because it was needed, she did a few quick stretches, as though she were about to run windsprints instead of run for her simulated life.
  19. Erin was walking on the balls of her feet as they reached the end of the long hallway, the darkness and the enclosed space serving to make her... well, not fearful, but very, very alert. If something bad were to happen now, it would be the devil's own time to get back to the surface, working in pitch blackness, while the air slowly went bad... She pushed the thought from her mind. "I'm fine," she told him. "We can start anytime."
  20. Feeling strangely obvious in her blue and yellow outfit, for all that every student had one in their closet, Erin followed him into the elevator, keeping her arms crossed over her chest. "When does the nothing is real part start?" she asked, looking around the elevator, then at Mr. Archer himself. "Is this real? Are you real?"
  21. "Fine, thank you," Erin said, picking at the sleeve of her uniform. It was the first time she'd worn the thing, and she was not at all sure about it. It seemed just a little too tight everywhere, not necessarily for physical comfort, but for her mental well-being. But it wasn't like a lot of people were going to see her today. "What kind of test is this going to be?" she asked.
