I went with a character picture! King Marvel is one of my favorite of Alex Ross' originals.

  3. Gosh, is this where I introduce myself? Hi all! I'm a historian by profession, comics fan and RPGer by inclination. (Sometimes they cross over with hilarious results. Someday I'll write a history of Fawcett vs. DC.) As my character and name tell you, I'm a big fan of Captain Marvel, and the sheer insanity of the Golden Age in general. I'm currently reading the Superman Chronicles; the very earliest appearances of the Man of Steel. (Superman fights drunk drivers! By destroying an automobile factory. Because that's the way they rolled in the Golden Age!)

  6. Captain Wonder hates bullies! See Amazing Comics #40 "Cap vs. the Hooligans!" Sep. 1943 After fifty-seven years of abstinence, I very much like the idea that Captain Wonder's return is over something as minor as a little kid getting picked on by bigger kids. Fred Fawcett had enough willpower to sit out the Terminus Invasion, but some things are important! Of course, these days it's much harder for someone to speak a magic word, explode with the Light of Ra, then scarper without someone taking a few pictures. And then, as he'd always expected, once he goes back to the old ways, there's no going back... (I also like the idea of his 'successor' not being up to snuff. Perhaps one of the kids he chases away as Captain Wonder gets picked as the champion of a different breed of Egyptian gods, giving a Kid Miracleman antagonist to the Golden Age Captain Marvel protagonist. And a reason to interact (with some mixed emotions) with other supers! Hmm hmm.)

  9. Long time reader, first time poster, etc. So, anyone want to help an old man out with his return to action? Veiled Malice and I have tossed around a few good ideas, but I'm open for anything. Other PCs welcome!

    Another Road

The old man stands in almost reverent awe before the statue, bare-headed in the cold, his brown jacket and slacks as old-fashioned as the rest of him. His hair is pure white, not grey, and his skin is wrinkled and spotted with age. But his back is straight and his blue eyes clear as he looks up at the statue of Earth's greatest hero. He's not from a generation of talkers, so he stands quietly as he listens to the noise of the park and studies the hundred-foot-tall statue of the Centurion. Mark Leeds is forever young, just as he was in life, and somehow that seems appropiate now that everything is said and done.

  15. Once Captain Wonder gets approved, I'd be interested in his relationship with you guys. After all, not every mystical society has a champion of Atum-Ra on the payroll. =D

  18. All right, I edited Cap some. His flat-footed defense bonus, initiative, and power totals are correct. I dropped his Charisma down to 12 because he's still something of a 'grumpy old man", and added the Benefit: Champion of the Egyptian Pantheon. What does this mean? Captain Wonder is generally recognized, by those who know, as the champion of the gods of Egypt. The symbol of Wonder is respected by those with reason to do so; whether because of magical origin or compatible traditions, and disliked by those of incompatible backgrounds. (Worshippers of, say, Greco-Roman gods will be inclined to be cool.) Divine entities who don't want trouble with the Egyptian gods will be inclined to leave him unmolested, unless of course they think they can get him when Atum's not looking, or when it serves the story. It is not a get out of jail free card, but it's certainly a magical sign of powerful friends. The Benefit is also a complication, which means that he may find himself pulled into wars and conflicts between the gods, both on Earth and in the home of the Egyptian pantheon. If Hades shows up again, Wonder will be expected to be front and center in keeping the Greek gods off the planet. Basically, I'm picturing something like the relationship Wonder Woman generally enjoys with the Greek Gods in the pages of her comics. How it winds up working is up to the GM. How's that, judges?

  21. Back in the day, he was one of the most powerful heroes of his era. That makes a man a lot of enemies! Of course, he was also a bit more powerful back in his own day... Yeah, that's a big part of it. Fred has a complicated relationship with superheroes and superheroing, and his attitudes don't mesh too well with the heroes of the modern era. It's not enough to be a serious obstacle, but it's enough to...Complicate things. =D (He's also something of an anachronism in his technical skills, though he at least lived through the era between his heyday and today.) He'll show those kids what for! =D Fred is very much a creature of both the Golden Age and the Modern Age, so I think he'll fit in great. I've made the changes you were after, I think.
