  1. Agnes was indeed very Cinderella like. She was wearing an old pair of jeans, a baggy hooded sweatshirt, and had her hair covered by a kerchief. With a broom in one hand as a dustpan in the other, she was the spitting image of black-sheep-labor. Agnes was oblivious to Lucy's arrival. She kept right on working at sweeping up mice droppings. All of the "no kill" traps were empty, but the bait was gone. The mice were apparently smarter than a teenage girl (or the guys who make traps).

  3. Agnes could sit up by herself now. She rested her head in her hands while she spoke. "Agnes. My name is Agnes." As she spoke her true name, she relaxed her mind. A soft glow covered her briefly, and when it passed, she was herself again, dressed in her tattered sweatshirt and jeans again. The sword returned to its place beneath the church. Agnes rubbed her knees and didn't look up. "It's nice to have my pants back."

  6. Agnes collapsed into the woman's arms. Her wings went limp, and her glow faded. The seared flesh on Agne's back was still smoldering. She was very nearly unconscious, but the sword didn't fall from her hand.

  12. Agnes had been working down in the various basements of St. Sebastian's all morning. The church had a continuing problem with rats, and Agnes had volunteered for clean-up duty. The elders had insisted on an exterminator, but Agnes, once she heard of it, protested strongly. She pleaded with Sister Agatha to take up her case with the elders. They reached a compromise. Agnes could set out no-kill traps to "relocate" the rats, as long as she cleaned up after them. The elders would revisit the issue in a month. So Agnes had worked diligently for the last few months to save the mice. This morning was no different.

  15. Agnes was caught completely by surprise. The blast of electricity drilled into her back, blistering her skin and wrenching her head over heals. The shockwave sent her sailing past Lady Liberty toward the ground. She blacked out for a moment, but the rush of the cold air quickly brought her back. Agnes tried to straighten out, to stop her decent, but the pain in her back was excruciating. She let out a cry of pain and doubled over again, but the exercise of her will was sufficient to bring her to a stop, hovering in the night sky. Traces of electricity still arced across her body, and her back was smoldering.

  18. We don't really do Christmas at my house, but I always go next door and help my neighbor decorate. It is usually the first few weeks of December.
