Agnes' face slammed against the rough brick wall. The loud smacking sound rang in her ears and stars danced in front of her face. She sucked in her breath, but was so shocked and scared that she couldn't scream. Warm blood was flowing freely from her nose. This was the moment of truth: fight or die.
Blinking the tears out of her eyes, Agnes jerked herself around, pulling her sweatshirt out of Lucy's grip. She struck out with her fist and connected soundly with Lucy's mouth. Agnes didn't feel anything. She was entirely numb, acting only on blind (and alien) instincts.
