  1. Redline Power Level: 10 (150/150PP) Unspent Power Points: 0 Trade-Offs: -3 Attack / ±3 Damage, -3 Defense / ±3 Toughness In Brief: Tiny Test-Pilot in Power Armor Catchphrase = "It isn't a real test until we hit the Redline!" Theme: Stereo MCs Elevate My Mind Identity: Public Birthplace = New York City: Residence: Freedom City apartment near Liberty Park Occupation: Test Pilot Description: When not wearing his Battlesuit, Charles is a rich kid who can Shrink to 6" tall. In armor, Redline is a 6"-tall Battlesuit wearer. Age: 22 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Asian-American Height: 6'2" Weight: 210 lbs Eyes: Green Hair: Glowing Sky-Blue History:Charles was born rich, with an Asian name, the only child of an Asian multimillionaire and an American (White) ex-model. At 11 years old, his maternal Grandfather (Chas Wyndum the 4th) died, leaving him a trust fund requiring that he change his name to Charles Wyndum the 5th. His Father was ecstatic. He learned to use the radio at 9 years old, remote-control flying by 12, actually flying (ultralights, etc) by 16. At 18 he worked as an international courier using a private jet for a year. At 19 he became an expensive, free-lance test-pilot. Four months ago, he was landing an experimental disk-jet when a UFO rammed him and there was an explosion. When Charles woke up, he had glowing, sky-blue hair and was able to shrink down to six inches tall. He did the talk-show circuit, then hired a genius to create a Battlesuit for him. He has had it for one month and decided to move to Freedom City. Personality & Motivation: Charles is upbeat, open-minded, and focused on success. He is looking to testing his Battlesuit with an eye towards mass production and franchising (City Guardians? 21rst C police?). He knows himself quite well, so he also knows that he wants to be in the spotlight, he wants to be appreciated by whole crowds of people, but he also enjoys individual gratitude or adoration. Powers & Tactics: "Shrinking is really cool, but not much when you look at the adventures of the greats. I know I can be great, I just need the right tools to really shine. So I hired a genius to make the right 'tools', a Battlesuit! Mine is set-up for a 6-inch tall pilot, but that just for purposes of testing things out. I don't know, but maybe there are franchise possibilities? Battlesuit-wearing police, or private security forces, or something? Anyway, I'm gonna find out. My engineering buddies and fellow-pilots tend to call me 'Redline' for some reason, so I've decided to go with that for a hero identity. I had the genius install a bright set of LEDs to draw a red line behind me when I fly. Kind-of a calling card. So the battlesuit protects me, enables me to move things, lets me fly, shoot plasma shots at targets, as well as give forth an incredibly amazing prehensile, five-foot-long plasma sword! I know I can't do much on my own, but I have no idea of how to find a team..." Power Descriptions: When Redline shrinks there's no particular glow or anything. He generally carries the battlesuit in a right lapel pocket, but he drops it, shrinks, and puts it on. The act of shrinking takes time, and makes him feel dopey (foolish) and shaky for about 3 rounds after, while he struggles to put the battlesuit on. Once it is on, and he feels up to it, he re-focuses on the action. Tthe Battlesuit's exterior color is Ivory except for a 1" wide, horizontal, glowing red line The intensity of the light is such that. when flying, the Battlesuit leaves a red line trail for three rounds after having left that area (eye after-image effect) When the Blending power is activated, this is turned off. Complications: Addicted Gloryhound This is actually a need for love, but Charles doesn't believe he deserves to be loved by people he likes or loves, so he seeks to find, please, and earn the gratitude or adoration of crowds or strangers. Honor He was raised to believe and demonstrate that his word is his bond. Prejudice He has a basic American idea that every American citizen is equal, is deserving of a higher beginning degree of respect than any non-American just because, and that more successful or rich Americans are deserving of the higher and highest degrees of respect. Temper He is young and hasn't had to face many challenges that he didn't seek out or create for himself, so he isn't used to getting frustrated. When he is frustrated, he finds it difficult to remain cordial and self-controlled. He tries to cover this possibility by being happy-go-lucky, but that often comes out as a smart-assedness. 2. Agreed and done. But now the "Start a Topic" button is not available in Character Bank/ Heroes. Gonna sign out and in....Nevermind, I figured it out. Good guidebook!
  3. Okay. I am posting to the Character bank, hoping to get an approval or two....
  4. I have a question on your Super Costumed Martial Artist - - -
    " Alternate Power: Protection 4 (Extras: Impervious 10,  ..."
I thought we could only take Impervious to '6' at PL 10?

  5. So....if I want to write a vignette, after approval of course, in which the character interacts with a device that he does not own, do I list that somewhere? He doesn't gain any direct benefit from the device....
  6. I got it! Important to rem the all-important "save" button!!
  7. .So....if I want to write a vignette, after approval of course, in which the character interacts with a device that he does not own, do I list that somewhere? He doesn't gain any direct benefit from the device....
  8. Lol! Is it just funny? Or is it ironic? "This equipment is of no real use, you'd only be at PL 3, if that.", "That equipment is combat-oriented, so you have to pay for it." Okay, I paid for it.

    Vigilantism

Several times, in perusing parts of these Forums, I have run across the "We don't condone or support vigilantism" phrase. ? Do you mean at all? Or just in Real Life? Because, that would mean that in-game every hero and every team would require some sort of police authorization before facing, pursuing, or combating any unproven suspects. Is that what you're saying?
  10. 1. If one views a role playing game as mix of role-playing (story telling focus) and game (tactical challenge focus), what kind of mix do you like? I much prefer stories to second-by-second detail micro-management. Combat is important, and I want my character to survive, succeed, and thrive,, but I am hoping that there will be 2 - 3x as much exposition of story-parts and interactions as there will of co,bat results. 2. Our site operates a policy that no PC should die without player permission. Failure, however, is another matter. A villain could get away, an innocent (or beloved) could die, calamity could happen, your PC could get the snot beaten out of him and humiliated (publicly or privately). How do you feel about the prospect of failure? What chance of failure would you like, and what type of failure would you tolerate, expect, or indeed wish? In order for there to be any real success, there has to be a possibility of failure. In order for a character to learn and grow, s/he must try, risk, fail, try, risk, fail, try, risk, and maybe succeed. Without repeated failures and risks, it just isn't much of a story. Yes, I would like my character to succeed and thrive. But I don't want it all to be easy, all too easy. I want to co-create an excellent story. So, I need those challenges, I need those failures. 3. Superheroes have great power, the power to impose their will upon the world. This can mean the chance to escape the moral complexities of the world, or it can mean even greater moral complexities. What do you want? Do you like your antagonists as well defined, clear-cut evil, or your antagonists (and protagonists) to be more ambiguous, greyscale and three dimensional? (we should note that this site does not condone vigilantes or the like) I don't believe that there is any evil. "Evil" is a religious-political propaganda green-lighting who it is 'okay' to hate, assigning a 'them' to focus our primitive "us v them" emotions on. That said, some people are insane. Some people are confused. Some people have beliefs which oppose those of my character. I prefer enemies that neither I nor my character can predict. I prefer stories that are a bit complex and deep. Light-hearted is okay, but it can exist above the depths of an interesting story, or it can connect one interesting depth with another. 4. This site is unambiguously about superheroes. However, within those parameters, there is a fairly wide canvas. Three main categories that formed are the combat focus, The investigative focus, and the Social focus (which does not necessarily mean just chatting and making friends, but social conflict too). There are other themes and sub-themes, too many to mention here. Do you have any thoughts or preferences about themes? How much combat would you like in a thread, for instance? How would you feel if combat could be avoided by a subtle approach? I wouldn't want a superhero story-campaign with absolutely no combat. Not being able to predict how an encounter will best be managed is very important to me. Especially with Play-by-Post and having the IC and OOC sides of the same encounters, it seems to me that it is not a question of 'roll' playing v 'roleplaying', it is 'roll' playing OOC and 'roleplaying' IC. I prefer roleplaying stories where the story is character-driven, not plot-driven. There should be a plot, but there should never be only one way to succeed at a challenge or solve a problem. 5. Finally, do you have any other comments on what your priorities or preferences are in playing a RPG, and more specifically, a superhero RPG? I would prefer story-creation in which everyone has fun, where we cooperate interactively, and build off of each other's strengths.
  11. This article guides fairly well, introducing the meat of the subject, but then kind-of showcasing it as opposed to inviting the readers to actually taste the meat. The best glimpse was with Spiderman. .....What we are really talking about here, is how can the player empower the GM to create the background of the current story in which the character's life is going wrong in every way? I think, as with Supercape's Spiderman example, we should have several people bring up their favorite graphic or in-print stories, and show the difference between background parts, plot-hooks, drawbacks, and complications. .....I would like to start with a book by Lois McMasters Bujold = The Warrior's Apprentice. The book itself was captivating. I understood, empathized with, and was swept into the main character's world by the third page. I have tried to analyze the book, but each time I read it I get swept up into the story again. ...Long Nutshell = Normal-ish kid with physical and emotional problems fails an intense test, which makes his life into a tragedy. As his bones 'recover' he manages to exit his Father's world where all of his hopes and dreams are based, to zombie-vacation in the world where his Mother was raised (showing us the differences between the two worlds). Circumstances come up which empower/ require the kid to display how much of a genius, con-man, and fool he is (simultaneously),, and leave him with some friends in a starship managing a cargo. It turns out they got conned, and sloppy space-mercenaries take them over. The kid's genius and experience with military minds comes to center-stage as he escapes the control of the mercs, counter-takes them over and convinces them that they have been recruited by a much more powerful and effective mercenary outfit. The reader becomes intensely aware that this kid was never normal, he just felt about his life the way that most humans do. The kid leap-frog--bootstraps his way into taking over all of the ships of that force, creating the regulations of the fictional space mercenaries, and training the people he trusts to maintain and continue the con. Skipping a couple of adventures, he makes it back to his Father's world, where his Father has been accused of treason by sending him out to acquire a space-force. While the confusion is cleared up, his Father uses the opportunity to convince the Emperor and other powers that his son is "too dangerous to be allowed to run around without being controlled", so they forcibly put him into the Imperial army officer's academy, which was the aim of the original test! The book finishes up demonstrating the kid using his intelligence and forethought to survive and conquer tests and convert potential enemies into allies. ....The kid was raised in a society where any physical deformity was castigated and persecuted when possible, mostly focused on mutations. That's background. The kid has a physical problem that makes it seem like he is a mutant. That's a bunch of plot-hooks, but not always a complication, or at least, not by itself. The kid and most of his family are intensely focused on him becoming an Imperial officer like his Father and Grandfather before him. Good basis of drama = background. The kid often makes hurried or foolish decisions. Drawback. Except these three things, background, plot-hook, and Drawback can combine into an instance of a complication. The kid is taking a test and makes a foolish decision, in a hurry, egged-on by a fellow test-taker who is 'persecuting the mutant' and acting as an enemy. This results in him shattering his leg-bones, failing the test, and having to go to a hospital. It is this complication which precipitates the whole story. How would I phrase it? "Auto-fails Wisdom-checks when mocked." Most of the time, such a failure would not result in any story-drama. It would be up to the GM to arrange the background-experience (test, culture of mocking) to make that complication work. to get a story going. ...There are similar combinations between the kid's sense of honor, need to deceive others, intense desire to be excellent at war, and extremely (to the kid) new and different background cultures that he must survive and adapt-to as he passes through them. In the world of his Father, sense of honor and rituals of honor are common, so having a sense of honor is no complication or plot=hook. But when the kid moves into other cultures, it becomes rare, and when it drives the story, it acts as a complication. How to predict that it could or will drive the story is difficult to see.
  12. "Rich Royer here folks! A young man has just moved to Freedom City, and as usual, I am the first reporter to see him! "On the spot when it's hot! "We sat down at his 17th story penthouse apartment overlooking Liberty Park. "Good afternoon! I'm Rich Royer, welcome to Freedom City's Free News!" "Indeed. Good afternoon to you and to our viewers as well. I'm Charles Wyndum the fifth, but everyone tends to call me 'Redline'!" "Well, let's get right to it then!" They both sat down. A cool breeze gently caressed them as the clouds far above blew by. "Would you like some tea?" The one-armed, slender Asian-American asked, stirring 5 tablespoons of sugar into his own cup. "Where are you from?" "I was born and raised in New York City. I have just moved here on my own." "How would you describe yourself? Is this different from how others would?" *sips his tea "I'm young and, uh, 'ready', I guess. Others have told me that I'm pushy, arrogant, angry for no good reason, but what can you do?" *sings "Can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself. Lat da da da!" "Do you have distinguishing speech characteristics or recurring mannerisms?" "I sing whenever a part of a song occurs to me, and I don't really like most music that was made after 1990." *sings: "Sing along if you feel that happiness is the truth!" "What is your motivation?" "My Psychiatrist says that I'm compensating for having had distant parents when I was growing up. Dad was always busy with his business ventures, and Mom had a very active social calendar, but neither ever really trusted the Nannies (we had about 3 per year). I just know I love to be on stage and I couldn't act my way out of a paper bag. I love being on television and on podcasts. I love setting new airspeed records in experimental aircraft!" *Sings: "Takin' care of business! Every day! Takin' care of business! Every way!..." "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?" "I don't get afraid very often, and I never panic. Since the accident, I can shrink down to six inches tall. I'm very familiar with a lot of scientists, experimenters, and inventors. "Hmmm. When I get angry, I get really, really angry." *Sings: "ding da di ditta ditta ding da di ditta ditta, But when David Banner becomes angry, a startling metamophosis occurs!" "What do you love? What do you hate?" "Are you repeating on purpose? I love being appreciated, applauded, and adored. I hate people who think they can give me orders because they're old, or because they're an "air marshall"!" *sips his tea. "Describe your mental and emotional state?" "Ohhh, geeze! In what terms? Do you want me to send you my last psych-eval?" "What do you fear the most?" *stands up, goes over to the desktop, runs the recording DVD back a bit, to where it shows him answering: "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?" "I don't get afraid very often, and I never panic." *Sings: "...and they're all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look, just the same!" "What is your greatest ambition?" "I'm not sure yet. I would like to do something that thousands of people could enjoy and feel grateful to me for at the same time. Something big, something meaningful." *sips his tea "How do you feel about the state of the world and your place in it?" "I'm not sure I understand the question. I'm alive, so things are great! Does the world have challenges? Certainly! But each one is an opportunity for someone to shine!! I have a chance to be one of those somebodies!" *Sings: "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air! I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee!" "Do you have any prejudices? How do you get along with others?" "I don't think so. I tend to post-judice." "What are your loyalties? In what order?" "Hmm. My current project (whatever it is), then my self, then my friends, then my family, then my nation, then the planet, then my city, then the Solar System, then my state, then whatever sports teams I am invested in...." "Do you have a lover or partner?" "Not yet! I mean, nothing that has lasted. But I remain hopeful." *Sings: "One is the loneliest feeling that you'll ever know! Two can be as bad as one, it's the loneliest number since the number 'one'..." "Do you have a family? What is the relationship there like?" "I have a Father and a Mother, but I was an only child. I'm pretty sure I already talked about them. *flicks Rich's forehead. "Testing, one, two! Is this thing on?" "How would the people closest to you describe you?" "Well, right now you are the one who is closest to me. How would you describe me?" *hums the Jeopardy tune. "Are you a role model?" "Not yet. Hopefully, someday!" *sips his tea "How spiritual are you? Do you follow a religious tradition?" "I know that there is a metaphysical reality. I've watched real wizards, and read a bunch of stuff - - Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Illusions, a number of books that have been channeled from 'Seth' to 'Abraham Hicks', and I'm really interested in manifesting and the Law of Attraction - - but I'm not religious. I've been told that when I want to find a wife I should join a church. Whenever I'm feeling the need for church-like experiences I attend a Sunday Service at a Universalist Unitarian Church and that cures me of the affliction!" *Sings: "...totally recommend you to the Spirit in the Sky! That's where I'm gonna go when I die..." "Are you part of a team, would he like to be? Why?" "No, but that would be great!! All the most effective and famous heroes were in teams!" "How do you feel about the place of metahumans and aliens on Earth?" "We have a place? Where is that, exactly?" *sips his tea "If you could give one piece of advice to yourself, what would it be?" "When you start getting irritated with someone, don't be a smart-ass immediately, shut up! Write that stuff down!!"
