  1. 1. If one views a role playing game as mix of role-playing (story telling focus) and game (tactical challenge focus), what kind of mix do you like? I feel that 'role playing' and 'game' need to really blend together to make a 'role playing game.' With that said, tactics should take game dominance while the role playing becomes the force that steers the boat, deciding what the tactics are needed for. This usually means for me that a character's actions should be mechanical in nature (requiring attack rolls, saving throws and the like), but be influenced by his role playing behaviour and character development. 2. Our site operates a policy that no PC should die without player permission. Failure, however, is another matter. A villain could get away, an innocent (or beloved) could die, calamity could happen, your PC could get the snot beaten out of him and humiliated (publicly or privately). How do you feel about the prospect of failure? What chance of failure would you like, and what type of failure would you tolerate, expect, or indeed wish? Yes, I want failure, and lots of it! A huge portion of all superhero stories, and even just stories in general, is failure. The hero could lose, or fail to do something, or make a mistake, and then he has to take action to solve the problem, whether it's internal or something he has done to someone else. It should be possible for any character to fail, to lose a loved one, to be beaten and humiliated, and experience anything else you can think of. A game where you can't lose, even if you do something stupid, is boring and makes it hard to really role play. On the other hand, a game where even a very clever player or skilled role player loses because the villains are overpowered is cruel, and similarly bad for gameplay. It should be possible to fail, at any opportunity, but also always possible to win. 3. Superheroes have great power, the power to impose their will upon the world. This can mean the chance to escape the moral complexities of the world, or it can mean even greater moral complexities. What do you want? Do you like your antagonists as well defined, clear-cut evil, or your antagonists (and protagonists) to be more ambiguous, greyscale and three dimensional? (we should note that this site does not condone vigilantes or the like) As I said, a role playing game should be a tactical experience that is driven by its story. This means that villains, being a big part of the tactical game, should have strong involvement in the story as well. They should have a tale to tell and, while not always being sympathetic, be at least understandable. An antagonist should have a strong, non-stereotypical reason behind his actions other than 'HA HA HA EVIL.' Not every villain's story will have to be heard, since sometimes the hero never does learn the villain's motivation. However, they should all have one, in case it is needed (and hopefully it will be). 4. This site is unambiguously about superheroes. However, within those parameters, there is a fairly wide canvas. Three main categories that formed are the combat focus, The investigative focus, and the Social focus (which does not necessarily mean just chatting and making friends, but social conflict too). There are other themes and sub-themes, too many to mention here. Do you have any thoughts or preferences about themes? How much combat would you like in a thread, for instance? How would you feel if combat could be avoided by a subtle approach? The exact balance of combat, investigation and social focus should depend on characters in a thread, while also trying to change them. So putting the mentalist with low combat stats but a heap of offensive Mental powers in a room full of T-Rexes that are immune to will effects is a little unfair. On the other hand, pitting him against a few guys with pathetic will saves and minimal damage output is way too far into his own ballpark. If the mentalist's powers are all combat-related, give him combat that he can beat. But at the same time, make him try new things. Give him a social situation he needs to pass through. How do his mental powers, which are all aggressive effects like Mental Blast, allow him to thrive? This can encourage a character to develop both in skill and behaviour, and keeps the game fresh. 5. Finally, do you have any other comments on what your priorities or preferences are in playing a RPG, and more specifically, a superhero RPG? A superhero RPG should be the very opposite of rail-roading. No option should be forced, and everyone should have a chance to try anything in any way that makes sense to them. This is something an RPG will always have over any other type of game, and it should be taken advantage of. In most video games, when you encounter a boss, you have to beat that boss. If you lose, you fight him again. But in an RPG it's not like that. You can run away, talk to him, or respond in any other appropriate way. That's awesome, and I want it to be present here.
  2. Marko Miles - Gather Information DC 10: Marko Miles is a young adult who studies at college and has a part-time job. DC 15: Marko is twenty years old and studies Engineering at Hanover Institute of Technology. He currently works at Stan's Super Heroes. DC 20: Marko is at College on Monday, Friday, and Saturday. He works on Tuesday and Thursday. DC 25: Marko seems to frequently vanish, especially on his 'off' days (Wednesday and Sunday), as if he's living some sort of double life. The Blur - Gather Information DC 10: The Blur is a man in a yellow and black costume not unlike a superhero, seen on posters throughout Freedom City. He probably doesn't exist. DC 15: The Blur is not a myth but a superhero who can run and fight at incredibly fast speeds. DC 20: The Blur's top speed is 400,000 MPH, a full-on assault from him is stronger than automatic weapon fire, and he is practically impossible to hit for an ordinary person. DC 25: The Blur's more exotic powers include regenerating minor wounds in a moment and launching blasts of air at foes.

    The Blur

20Q: 1. Where is your hero from? “Well, I was born and raised right here in Freedom, actually. I’ve spent a lot of time here, so I’ve learned to love trips out into the country. Fresh air and such, you know?†2. How would your hero physically describe him/herself? Is this different from how others would? “What, seriously?†*Flexes* “That there? There’s the real deal, man. I don’t have Super-Strength, Super-Toughness, none of that. I just gym, a lot. Everyone I know can tell I’m pretty strong, though I hear some bad stuff about my hair. It’s not my fault that they don’t make gel designed to withstand Mach 10, and how am I expected to sit down for twenty minutes for a haircut? Twenty minutes!†3. Does your hero have distinguishing speech characteristics or recurring mannerisms? “Well, I don’t know if this counts, but when I’m excited and not paying attention to myself I can accidentally talk really fast. Ha, that reminds me! There was this one time, right, whereI was at thisbar downtown, and-this-guy-was-asking-me-for-afavoutiwakoh!†4. What is your hero's motivation? “Well, it’s fun, you know? You ever dodged bullets, like in the Matrix? That’s exhilarating. Running around, knocking people off their feet, tying them up for the cops, jumping across buildings, sprinting on water. That stuff, it’s all great, nothing better. And…And I like to show those guys what’s up. Thieves, murderers, criminals in general. They think they can just do what they want to guys like you. Normal guys. That’s not right; they don’t deserve to be able to do that to you. I want to teach them that, so they’ll stop. Also, dodging bullets. That’s pretty sweet, did I mention that?†5. What are your hero's greatest strengths and weaknesses? “Well, I’m the fastest guy I know. And I’m getting faster. I could run at ten miles an hour or so back in middle school, and was up to sixty by the end of my secondary education. It was a thousand right before I became the Blur, just a month ago, and now I can sprint at four hundred thousand miles per hour! I don’t know exactly how my powers grow, but they do it just like me; fast! I’m hard to hit, I’m hard not to be hit by, and I can do a bunch of nifty things like heal between hits. Hm, weaknesses? Yeah, between you and me, I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t know Muay Thai or anything, I just swing my fists around like an idiot and somebody goes down. And yeah, once or twice I managed to walk through a wall, but I don’t know how I did that, and I don’t know how to do it again. I’ve got so much power, and really, I don’t know how to use it.†6. What does your hero love? What does your hero hate? “I love speed, it’s great when people are succinct. I mean, in my opinion, when they do an election the two guys should come up, and one of them should say “I believe in this, we should do this,†and the other guy does the same thing, and everybody votes. But it has to go for weeks. Why does it go for weeks? By the time it’s started a lot of people already know who they’re going for. Huge waste of time.†7. How would you describe your character's mental and emotional state? “You know how I said I’m getting faster? I’m getting quicker, too. I mean, that’s always been a thing for me. In first grade, I could calculate stuff like two plus two way faster than anyone else. Now I can tell you…well, give me a number.†… “Yeah, okay. That’s the square root of…twenty one million, four hundred and eighteen thousand, three hundred and eighty four. As long as it’s within my mental capacity, even if it should take me over an hour to painfully work something out mentally, I can do it in a second or so. And I’m getting so quick that things are slow; like what I said about haircuts, before. I mean, college is okay, because I’m hearing information and using my brain to process that. It’s activity. But just sitting there, doing nothing, for twenty minutes? I hate that. And I’m scared that it’ll get worse, that I won’t be able to sleep because I can’t take five seconds to just lie down and relax. That I won’t be able to bear school or work. That I’ll go insane. For now I’m fine, of course.†8. What does your hero fear the most? “Well that insanity thing, that’s a little taxing. But, funnily enough, I’m also scared of the opposite. I don’t want to lose my powers, even if they might have some negative psychoactive effects in the future. They’re so fun to have. Imagine you spend your whole life, since you were five years old, being this amazing person. People love you, they respect you, and you can do things that nobody else can even imagine. And then one day, pop, you’re one of the normal people on the sidelines, fascinated by the super heroes. I don’t know what I’d do about that. Would I just keep going to school, to work, getting money and eventually getting old? I’m not sure if I could take that.†9. What is your character's greatest ambition? “I want to be global. People are finally starting to catch on after a few months, now. Yesterday I heard some girl call out ‘It’s the Blur!’, so I guess that signage I stuck up was enough to get myself known. And that’s cool, but I don’t want to be a fast super hero. I want to be the fastest super hero, I want to protect the world and beyond like the big league supers, and when I get to that level my thing will be that I’m way, way faster than anyone else.†10. How does your hero feel about the state of the world and his/her place in it? “Sometimes I think that, in a world of people, I’m meant to be a thing. Most people go to school and get a job, and just live their life. I’ll never be that, I’ll never have that. I have to fight, and be shot at, and save lives – and hey, I don’t have a problem with that. But if this is what I do, why am I trying to be like one of them as well? Why am I going to school, and why do I have a job? I think it’s so I can know what a normal person is like, to have empathy for them, so it’s easier to save them. But really, I could save so many more if I didn’t bother with those things, right?†11. Does your hero have any prejudices? How does he/she get along with others? “I hate slow people. No, that’s unfair. I hate when people are slow, though I try not to get mad at them for it. I mean, they’re not actually too slow, I’m just too fast, right? They shouldn’t be punished for that, and I try to let them slide. But I won’t lie, it really is hard not to be frustrated with them. Either way, I’ll be nice to people if I can, but it’s hard to have a relationship with anyone when I’m constantly off on super hero business. I haven’t met any other supers yet, speaking of, but when I do I plan to be nice to them. I think at some point they’ll be my only shot at actual friends.†12. Where do your heroes loyalties lie? In what order? “The Blur comes first. I am the Blur, my name is the Blur, Marko Miles is just some dude I dress up as now and then. Hehe, I used to drill that mantra into myself so much to make sure I didn’t accidentally give myself away in the field. Now I use it to remind myself to keep my priorities straight; I’m a super hero. A super hero with a job and a college course, yeah, but those things come second and third. I can get a new job, and I can probably succeed in life without my engineering. A social life comes fourth on the ladder of importance, which is kind of a problem. I try to hang out at clubs and maybe get some girls, but I’m just way too busy to pay attention to them.†13. Does your hero have a lover or partner? How do they feel about the hero now? “Well, as I just said, it’s pretty hard to keep anyone’s interest when you have as many responsibilities as me. Shame, too, because between you and me I can be pretty good with the ladies.†14. Does your hero have a family? What is the relationship there like? “Yeah no, I have a mom and dad like most people. They moved a few states away though, I guess to get away from the city life. They know I have powers, of course, I grew up with them. But they don’t know I’m playing hero, yet, and I’d rather not tell them. They never liked me being too different when I was a kid, I guess because powers attract bad attention. And yeah, I put myself in danger now, but with these powers it’s my duty. Mom and dad feel so far away but, if I ever really need to talk, I can be there in moments. I guess that’s why I don’t talk to them, because it feels like they’ll be in reach forever. That’s gonna backfire.†15. How would the people closest to your hero describe him or her? “Closest? Um…yeah, I have friends, I guess. The guys in my class at HIT are pretty chill, though they don’t get why I can hardly go out with them. They think I’m a loner, and I guess that’s true. Everyone likes how I can understand concepts really quickly, though, so they probably think I’m smart.†16. Is your hero a role model? “I think so. I don’t have to do anything. I don’t need a job, I can steal stuff so fast people won’t even know it’s gone until I am too. Since I don’t need a job, I don’t need to work. I definitely don’t need to put my life on the line for the people of Freedom City, and sometimes I don’t know why I bother. But I do, and I think if everyone was like that the world would be a little bit better.†17. How spiritual is your hero? Does your hero follow a religious tradition? “I don’t have time for church or worship or what-have-you. Ha, I hear people say that as an excuse sometimes, but I seriously have no openings in my schedule. With that said, there could definitely be a god or gods of some sort. For all I know, one of them gave my dad the super gene that I got powers from. I sure hope so, too, because then they can’t complain at me for not going to church! You forced me to spend all my time saving people, sucker!†18. Is your hero part of a team, or would he/she like to be? Why? “Team? Like, a superhero team? That would be fun, and make the whole thing a lot easier, but…eh. What would I even be, the fast guy? Because that’s not much of a role. I like to think I’d be an inventor guy of sorts, but most groups have a super-brainy engineer who can do way more than I could in his sleep. Also, it’d be tough to schedule.†19. How does your hero feel about the place of metahumans and aliens on Earth? “I’m sort of a freak, so I’m in no place to judge anyone. Have eight limbs and twenty eyes, be ten feet tall, have a tiny body and massive head…whatever tickles your pickle, aliens. The eight limbs-twenty eyes guy would be pretty disgusting, I’ll admit, but again…I can’t judge him for that.†20. If you could give one piece of advice to your hero, what would it be? Piercetbh here. Man, get a life. There are heaps of superheroes in Freedom City; nobody will miss you if you take a day off once a week, or even twice. Go on a date, have a drink, play some laser tag. You don’t have to waste your life away saving other people.
  5. Sandman and I have spoken on chat. The details aren't all ironed out, but it seems we're both willing to work together in a thread. I'm also fine with you being the GM, Supercape. Let's make this a thing.
  6. Hi. New guy here who sort of has a slight idea what he's doing. I'd like to be in a thread, so if someone could help me with that it'd be great. Beat-em-up, skill-based, detective mystery, whatever floats your boat.
  7. It's a Shapeable Area, not a Burst. As long as there's some sort of path between the Blur and his enemies, he can hit them with no collateral damage. I think. (Edit: Apparently I was wrong, so this has been changed.) As for the Extended Reach, for a moment I had three powers in the array; the Shapeable Area Strike, an Autofire Strike, and an Air Blast power. I collapsed the last two into one; an extended range Autofire strike that could be a series of punches or short-range air blasts, depending on range. (Edit: Welp, ended up changing this as well. Back to a three power array, heh.)
  8. Player Name: piercetbh Character Name: The Blur Power Level: 10 (154/154PP) Trade-Offs: -5 Toughness/+5 Defence, -0 Damage/+0 Attack Unspent Power Points: 0 Progress To Bronze Status: 4/30 In Brief: Born with mutant powers that let him run, fight, and even think extremely fast. Alternate Identity: Marko Miles Identity: Secret Birthplace: Freedom City Occupation: Engineering Student at the Hanover Institute of Technology, Casual Worker at Stan’s Super Heroes Affiliations: Fellow Students and Professor Jet at HIT, Staff at Stan’s Super Heroes Family: Richard Miles (Father), Mary Miles (Mother) Description: Age: 20 (DoB: 1993, 5th of March) Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Height: 5’10†Weight:168 lbs. Eyes: Hazel Hair: Brown Marko’s powers do not directly provide him with enhanced strength, but he can use them to exercise and do strength training at extremely fast speeds. Because of this, he has become incredibly strong; not superhuman, by any means, but physically he is very capable. This strength has given him a body appropriate for a superhero, which shows even when he isn’t wearing his costume. As either The Blur or himself, Marko is usually smiling and almost always has incredibly messy hair. He tries to style it, he swears, but it goes wild every time he runs. Power Descriptions: When Marko uses his speed to run or attack, ‘The Blur’ is often an understatement. He can be completely unseen if he runs fast enough, allowing him to occasionally risk traversing the city with no mask and not be discovered. When using Quickness at a fast enough rate he sometimes experiences a similar effect, causing humorous sights such as a room that seems to clean itself as he dashes about, putting everything back in order. History: Miles’ birth was a quick one, and it was not long afterwards that his parents began to suspect something was different about him. In primary school he was faster than the other children, and in middle school he could outrun them on their bikes. On graduation night, he matched pace with a friend’s car. Everyone knew he was fast, and they thought he was a genius, too. Even the trickiest math is easy when you can think it over for a few minutes in the space of a second. Marko spent most of this school time knowing he was super, as he was told by his parents at eight years old that he had powers, and it was clear why. His father Richard had never told him, but in a freak accident decades ago he had been struck by a bolt of lightning; Marko’s dad had survived with seemingly no effect, until whatever had happened to him manifested in Marko at birth. He was pressured to remain discreet. He was already the ‘fast kid’, he just had to make sure he didn’t become the ‘light-speed kid’. The Speedster obliged, not having a problem with just being the fastest-running, quickest-thinking kid in his school in addition to being able to throw a pretty solid punch. After his education Marko got his own apartment and his parents moved away, leaving him on his own in Freedom City. He eventually decided to get into Engineering, one of his favourite subjects in high school. One year into this course he has found that his quick mind has let him thrive, though he still gets stuck frequently. Not wanting his powers to go to and waste and with no parents to stop him anymore, Marko was ready to suit up and fight crime within a month of starting his course and getting a part time job. He’d been planning on becoming a hero since high school, and now was the time to do it. He has been out in the field ever since, squeezing as much super-powered action in as he can between college and work. Personality & Motivation: When he is excited Marko can begin to talk very fast, and must be reminded to slow down by his friends. In fact, he is too fast for anything. He hates chess even though he’s extremely good at it. He so far has not been able to sit in a car for long enough to make any significant progress towards getting his driver’s license. As The Blur, the speedster does what he does for fun. Nothing is cooler to him than running across the city in a moment, dodging bullets, and put criminals behind bars on a daily basis. He also loves to meet other super-powered individuals, who are acting all over Freedom City. It’s nice for Marko to have other Superheroes to relate too, and it is also nice to have Supervillains who can challenge him. Powers & Tactics: The Blur is very, very fast. In combat he dashes about the area, too headstrong to hide yet not foolish enough to stand right in front of his much stronger enemies. He is strong, but not as strong as someone who possesses a superhuman level of strength. To them he is respectable but not comparable, and thus while a ‘greater’ foe can simply flail around swinging punches in combat, The Blur must keep on his toes. Snatching an armed foe’s weapon away, fooling a stupider enemy into leaving an opening in their defence, or straight-up running in to someone to knock them off their feet are all examples of strategies he may use when he doesn’t have the advantage in a simple punch-up. When even getting close for a short period is too dangerous, Marko can throw any reasonably small object, including small metal spheres he stores in the palms of his gloves, at rapid speed to attack an opponent as if with an automatic weapon. Complications:. Responsibility: Engineering is tough even if you can study at breakneck speeds. Marko has to attend his engineering lectures at HIT or Professor Jet will chew him out, and he’ll risk falling behind the class. Occasionally, he may be told to invent some sort of project or sit an exam. Responsibility: Marko has to pay for college somehow. In addition to lectures he must frequently work shifts a week at the local Stan’s Super Heroes. If he fails to attend he could get fired and get himself into even worse financial strife. Secret: Marko certainly doesn’t mind getting attention, but he definitely doesn’t want to be a world-famous superhero with paparazzi knocking down his door every day. His identity is hidden and he will go out of his way to keep it that way. Temper: Marko hates dealing with slower or more patient people, as for him even something complicated like designing an invention or planning for a battle should only take a few seconds. Often he can run off on a whim, unable to wait a long time for something to happen. Wealth: College is expensive, superhero suits are expensive, and part-time jobs for young adults pay low. Marko has the Struggling wealth condition and lives in a small apartment that he can barely pay for. 9. That seems a little silly even for me, hehe. Air Walk + very high Speed also looks pretty overpowered, given the cost of Flight in comparison. Edit: Well, its been a whole week now. I might as well submit this.
  10. Yeah, I know those were suggestions, but most of them made sense to me so I figured I'd make a handful of edits. Turning Attack Focus into Accurate is a good idea that got me some spare points, thanks. Also, your comment about adding a ranged attack later gave me another idea entirely; an area attack with, as an alt, a single-target ranged attack. I believe this is a more effective way to give myself a single-target attack while also giving The Blur a ranged option, which I suppose he needed. As for Leaping, I was ready to disagree with you; The Blur could survive a seven mile long jump for the same reason he can survive a relaxed movement pace of 100,000 MPH, I'd imagine, and I wanted the novelty of being able to jump over, say, the Grand Canyon. Instead, I ended up thinking that having to jump something that big, with no valley below to just run through, would be a rare enough situation that I could power stunt a higher Leaping rank when it came up. So I ended up taking it down a few ranks, to get Regeneration back.
  11. Okay, I just made several changes, including a large move along the trade-off scale. I've fixed as much as I can: Small Text: Yeah, that's fixed. I think it happened because I edited the post from my phone. Mediocre Stats: 18 Strength, 20 Dexterity, 18 Constitution, 12 Intelligence. Hopefully that should be acceptable. Super-Movement: Done. Attack Specialization versus Accurate: My attack bonus is coming entirely from Attack Bonus/Attack Focus now, so this has become irrelevant. Limited Array: Not really sure what the problem is, here? A higher toughness save should save me from needing to use a Hero Point every time I'm hit, so I imagine I'll be able to stunt with some freedom. Autofire: I removed the extra for now, though I'll probably put it back when my damage is 10+. Expensive Attack, Wasted Points: Well, I can attack a single person without Strike now, only losing a bit of damage. I guess that solves the issue?
  12. Quickness gives the illusion of him being incredibly smart. Say for example you come across a mathematical problem so gruelling that it somehow takes you an hour to work out. For Blur, the same problem can be solved in under a second. In another example, if he were to study all day for a week, that's 420,000 hours of learning. The knowledge gained from this would be like experiencing 95 years of studying for 12 hours a day, every single day. That's enough time to learn everything he'd need to know to get through his Engineering Course, I imagine, which is why he's classified as having 'super-smarts.' The intelligence makes him great at knowledge checks, because he should be; he could consume an entire library if he wanted. If people think it makes no sense then I'll turn it into skill points or something, though.

When even getting close for a short period is too dangerous, Marko can throw his punches at such a speed that he blasts foes with air from a small distance away; this is yet another backup tactic of his.
