  1. "Very well, it seems as good a place to start as any." He began reading. Asgard, Midgard, the Aesir. While he felt a bit like an idiot, he kept reading. He wouldn't be able to prove he was right until he could prove she was wrong. Besides which, she seemed so insistent on it, it'd be rude not to. He chuckled, "Frost giants."
  2. Gigawatt was curious now. The argument seemed logical, though at this point it lacked proof. Perhaps in these pages there was something. He didn't think so. There would have been something said if there was definitive proof on what these beings were distant. It seemed out of place to him. No one had read these books? 'Let it go,' he told himself. 'What could possibly be in the pages of books at the local library? What words could possibly convince you that these things are real?' He took a minute to think things through. Then a thought came to him. 'How could a simple college student create free energy? What college student would be able to make me what I am? I still don't understand exactly how he managed it. But I'd still read a paper on it if he published it.' He looked at the woman again. "Alright, I'll bite. If the proof really lies in these books, then I'll take a look at them." That little voice was telling him he was an idiot for bothering. He answered back 'If there really is nothing here, then I'm right and can prove it. There's no losing here for me.'
  3. "So, you say you believe in these ultra powerful beings. Why? Have you been contacted, or perhaps a friend or loved one? Unless there was some contact somewhere, I don't think you'd have this specific knowledge you seem to possess." If he was going to have this conversation, he would at least try to get it out of the realm of pure speculation.
  4. She was making logical points. That was one point in favor of not crazy. While she mentioned Christianity as an example, she never actually said she was Christian. Interesting. "Lets suppose there Is a God, or are gods, and that He or She or It or they cannot directly interfere with human affairs, the way you say. The makes me wonder how often they use 'champions'. I've never heard of a deity without an agenda. The Christian God wants people to follow his rules, the pagan gods wanted to be the very strongest, and so forth. It also brings the question of how do you know the being that claims a champion is the real version of that being. People can disguise themselves, it stands to reason anything we could do, they could do." He didn't believe himself. Was he really going to have this discussion.
  5. "Fair enough, but a system of deterrents will only work for so long, and is based entirely on these gods themselves. My religious schooling isn't great, but I do remember hearing about large numbers of evil gods." Something wasn't right here. Something was wrong here. "There's something about this conversation that bothers me." it was like an itch he just couldn't scratch. Something off that you could see, but not explain. "At first, I was humoring a hypothetical. What would happen if yadda yadda yadda. Then there's this familiarity you seem to have with the topic. This suggests one of two things: First, you are making all of this up, and are seeing how I'll react, or you believe this." He could think of a few alternatives, but they didn't seem in character. She didn't seem like a zealot, who believed for no reason. She didn't seem like a loony either. But they don't let loonies work in public places. His options weren't all inclusive, but did seem the most likely. Besides which, based on her response, he would be able to more accurately gauge where this was coming from."Based on your observed intelligence and lucidity, I would like to conclude the first option. However, if it is the second option, then you believe you have evidence of this. Otherwise you wouldn't bring this up without knowing it'd be laughed at. I'm curious which"
  6. "That's a rather...interesting idea. I wonder what sort of History they teach up there at Harvard." Had he found one of those voodoo worshiping loonies? He hoped not. She seemed to be so lucid before, it would be a real shame if it turned out she was unbalanced. "Going on the assumption that there are in fact multiple gods, and from the presumption that there are rules for folks purported to have unlimited abilities, I could see the advantage to working through intermediaries." He started thinking about this more seriously. If he was going to do a mental simulation, it was best to do it all the way. "However, I can't think any sort of nearly all powerful entity would be bound by any sort of rule, regardless of purpose. Small things chafe the most. I have a limited experience with that."
  7. "I never solidified my spiritual beliefs. Whether there is one God, or a whole group of them, they've left me to my own devices. It's only fair that I leave them to theirs. If He, or they, wanted something of me, I'm sure they have can get in touch with me." He took a moment before adding, "And yes, I have heard the 'mysterious ways' thing before. I choose to believe if someone had all the power of the universe at they're disposal, they could just do what needed to be done without that Chaos-theory butterfly effect nonsense."
  8. "I personally don't by the 'magical powers' nonsense that get's thrown around. Sure, there are things that we don't understand yet. Doesn't mean they're mystical mumbo jumbo." He shook his head. Really, the fancy parlor tricks didn't impress him. There was always something driving it. He just wasn't sure what yet. "I've seen folks that use special belts that slow down time, and folks that have the most convincing illusions in the world. It's all smoke, mirrors, and fancy gizmos. I'll believe in magic when I meet God."
  9. "There is a lot of history around here, that's for certain. I'm sure if you wanted to, you could most likely make a career out of finding all the odds and ends lost over the years. You could probably find some of the gizmos and gadgets that have been left behind in all those fun hero fights. Genuine collectables are hard to come by"
  10. "Please don't take this the wrong way, but, I didn't really expect you to understand. To be honest, The friend who made me this way was far smarter than I. I'm still not exactly sure how he did what he did. If nothing else thank you for asking the question. I do so seldom get to speak about what I know, and I'm afraid if i don't keep using it, my mind will rot away." He gave a smile. This was quite entertaining. "What made you choose Freedom City to do your graduate work? You said you came from Harvard, I would expect they'd be able to facilitate that. Why the move?"
  11. "Just something to keep in mind. Saw too many promising students that went on to flip burgers. It's depressing. As for what I could do, It's part generator, part capacitor. As a generator, I produce 1 gigawatt an hour, if my calculations are correct anyway. For reference, the largest nuclear power plant in North America produces 6 gigawatts. As a capacitor, I believe I could hold up to a terawatt, if I did nothing but collect charge. For comparison, the entire human race used about 16 terawatts in 06." He was babbling again, and he new it. He still wasn't sure how accurate his measurements were. he hadn't had normal equipment, and they were only rough guesses, but he was pretty sure on those numbers. He didn't think that the young lady would have much of an idea about what he was talking about, but he hoped she'd be impressed.
  12. "Reading and digging may not be the most money making careers, but they are something. As for me..." Gigawatt wondered how much to tell. Certainly not the exact specifics. Couldn't hurt to tell the basics. "I actually did want to be a teacher, and was for a while. Then I was taken from it by a man I thought my friend, and I got to be his experiment. This is the result. Free energy, about 1 gigawatt every day. Not a bad setup." He switched gears. "Once you do get that Masters, what are you going to do with it?
  13. "I have not, but it's of no concern. I'll figure things out eventually." A Masters in history. And she works in a library? Something is wrong here. "So was your life's dream to be a librarian? I would think that you could at least get a teaching position, or some such thing.
  14. I'll clean up the choper, you folks worry about the mom, and Talos
  15. Gigawatt is stunting a blast 6( affects coporeal, area(burst) flaw: action(full round)) for this blast
  16. It had taken too long. He jumped out of a lamp post in the middle of the bridge, and found chaos. Metal monsters, a bronze giant, and a lot of screaming. 'Can't get civs out, don't dare blast too close to any of the cars.' He saw others taking care of this or that. But there were so many of the bugs. 'Best to start there.' He took a moment, and started gathering. He was carrying about 12 gigs of charge, so he started to pour that into a blast, a single blast. 'Better to take out the little ones before they start tearing things up. The big guy can wait.' He waited until he had maybe 3 gigawatts ready, and hurled it toward a large group of the bugs. He hoped no one was in the middle of that. "INCOMING!" he shouted, hoping to get the good guys out of the way. He'd never done a blast that size. It would be interesting to see.
  17. "I have been in Freedom for most of my life, but a mixture of my own disinterest in current event when I was a kid along with a lot of research and study as a student left me largely ignorant of the popular supers. Now that i find myself in this position, I find it useful to know about my...colleagues." He planned on being honest with Vivian. He didn't have too much to hide, and she seemed to take things with enough salt that whatever lie he could come up with would be largely obvious. "How long have you been in Freedom, then?"
  18. Gigawatt tought for a moment, wondering where to pick up this little conversation. He decided to focus on her knowledge of other supers, if possible. He didn't know any of them himself, and it was always good to know more about the people you 'worked with.' "You mentioned someone named "Dark Star." I can assume that this person is in some way like myself. Have you seen this person before?" He was curious about her first reaction. Seeing a blue floating thing behind you didn't usually warrant an assumption of identity unless there was familiarity. Perhaps he was mistaken though. 'Good of her to speak with me,' he thought. 'I'm surprised she didn't say she was busy, and get back to her book.'
  19. Gigawatt put on a big smile. "You know, Vivian, while I appreciate your offer, I was looking more to occupy myself more than anything else. There doesn't seem to be much need for my services, and relaxation is so very crucial. Perhaps conversation would be better though. You appear to be intelligent, and I don't think you'd be working at a library unless you'd have some schooling, so perhaps you will do me the favor of speaking with me." Gigawatt hoped that conversation would be on the menu. Too often his only human contact had was"save us" and "thank you." Stimulating conversation would be a welcome diversion from that.
  20. Gigawatt chuckled. "No, a library card isn't quite what I am looking for. I'm not capable of holding physical objects, and when I try, it leaves nasty burns. Rather distressing that. But that's not why I'm here. I'm here, like most others, to read. However, do to the aforementioned limitation, I read...second hand." He took a quick look at the woman in front of him. "It was rather rude of me, I admit, but what's a fellow to do. I don't think I caught your name, Ms...?
  21. Gigawatt flew low over the bustling crowds of downtown Freedom. Shoppers, students, office workers, going about their daily lives. It made him feel good. Due in some small part to him, and others like him, those people didn't need to worry. Things were taken care of. Gigawatt flew by an electronics shop just in time to hear the “Breaking News.†He stopped, startling a few people as the glowing blue man touched down outside the shop, watching the report on the bridge. Danger at the bridge. It would take too long to fly, so it seemed he would need to cruise. There were lights going along the bridge, and he could cruise through the power lines faster than he could fly. He knew most of the grid, it wouldn't take too long. It was almost like getting sucked into a vaccum cleaner. He dove into the nearby street lamp, and felt himself stretch. He couldn't be as condensed traveling this way without overloading things. So he stretched out, and started to move. Things needed to get taken care of, and that was his job now. He moved as fast as possible.
  22. Gigawatt couldn't help but smile. He hadn't encountered someone who would mistake him for someone else. It was a rather unique experience that he'd remember for some time. "I'm sorry, ma'am, but you have me confused with someone else. You can call me Gigawatt." He took a little bow, and placed himself a few inches above the floor. He didn't react well with carpeting. The last thing he needed was to start leaving little burns on the floor. "I apologise for interrupting you like I did. I don't get many opportunities to read, thanks to...my condition. I must say, you don't seem too shocked at finding someone like myself. You even confused me with Darkstar, I believe you said. If I may be so bold, how are you acquainted with this fellow?"
  23. What Gigawatt wouldn't do to be able to read all these books. He spent a lot of time when he was a student in the library, research for this paper, or just a little time reading an old favorite. He couldn't do that anymore, which was too bad. There was a price for all things, and he supposed flight could be balanced with this. Still, there were ways around such drawbacks. His ability to float in the air gave him such a way. He was currently reading over the shoulder of one of the librarians. The Lord of the Rings, if he wasn't mistaken. "It's always one I've read before." He mumbled aloud, trying to pace his reading with hers. "No one reads anything new anymore."
