  1. Start Date: January 29th, 2009 (Thursday)

The SCC and the various buildings were abuzz with activity, pretty standard activity for the place. The military had security well in hand, also pretty standard. Inside the various hangers and labs, numerous research and experiments were underway. The facility was state of the art by anyone’s standards.

From one of the administration buildings, a mostly bald man exited. He nodded to a few military men who accompanied him before striking up a conversation with some individuals in labs coats. The men in uniforms depart and after a few moments, various military vehicles pull away from the building and head down the tarmac.

Meanwhile, the balding man continues to talk with various individuals in lab coats who almost seem to continually approach him. The man, obviously a figure of prominence, checks his watch occasionally, and seeming satisfied he has enough time, moves on to the next individual seeking his attention.

  2. Greetings.

I'm was writing a short bit to introduce my new char (Dark Star). He'll be arriving at Star Island at the SCC.

But it was wisely suggested that I turn this into a mini-adventure bit. So, being a world of supers, SOMETHING will happen beyond the standard meet-and-greet. Anyone interested in being around for the something? I'll give it a day or two before I close it and just get it going.

  3. Sorry (again). Keep forgetting about the Insubstantial thing. (I have a memory like swiss cheese.) I made the change.

Mea culpa, it was something I'd overlooked during our prior conversation. From Ultimate Power:

Space Travel and Flight cannot be Alternate Powers of each

other in an Array (although one could be in an Array and the other

separate); in order to fly in both environments, a character must

    have both effects separately.

Kenson's reasoning: 1) You need both Flight and Space Travel to be able to be operational simultaneously, and having them as APs of each other or of another power doesn't permit that, and 2) Space Travel, being at half the cost of Flight, would produce things like Flight 6 (500 mph; PF: AP - Space Travel 12 [5,000 c]), which is kinda odd.

Easy fix, get one rank of Space Travel outside the array (by taking a point from somewhere else). The Space Travel in the Array can then be added to the out-of-the-Array Space Travel.

Ok, I don't think I understand. Doesn't that still not work? Spending a 1pp gets me Space Travel x1 (not in the array). But the array still has Flight and Space Travel in it. Maybe it's me just trying to get a handle on this system but I'm confused.

Ok, so I need to come up with 2 more points then for the radiation immunity? (Not sure that will happen just yet but will think of something.)

  4. Fixed the attack & initiative as noted.

The Blindsight is to represent sensitivity to gravitic emissions and forces. Not sure what would work the best. Um, maybe touch? Yes, I intended it so he he sensing the gravity in all directions.

Oh, oops. I thought Radiation was uncommon so only counted it as a 2. Hmm... I guess I might have to delete it and buy it back later with experience points. Can I do that?

Uh, why can't I use them together? The only reason I took Flight was because I thought I couldn't use TK to move myself. Not sure I understand this one.

  5. Greetings all.

Been bumming around the boards for a week or so, making a char. Just submitted it. So, here's a little bit about me:

I'm 35, married to a very nice and understanding woman (who tolerates me and my host of flaws; mostly :) ) and we have 1 daughter (almost 3). I'm a elementary school teacher. I live in the Northeast (US).

While I've never actually done M & M before, I have been gaming for about twenty years or so with much of the last ten gming for various friends in RL. I've played in various systems so should hopefully pick this up fairly quickly. I've done LARPing and have taught medieval combat for both it and theater (used to anyway; haven't even picked a sword up in almost 8 years sadly). With the arrival of my daughter, my fee time available for gaming has dropped significantly (still happens of course, just only like once or twice a month and I'm pretty much the GM most of the time). So, I turn to the Internet to get my RP fix.

Looking forward to having some fun RP with everyone.

    Later!

  6. [floatr]DarkStar.png[/floatr]Player Name: Cyroa

    Character Name: Dark Star

    Power Level: 15 (221/229PP)

    Trade-offs: -1 Attack / +1 Damage, -2 Defense / +2 Toughness

    Unspent PP: 8

    Progress to Gold Status: 79/90

    Age: 26 (appearance-wise)

    Appearance:

Normal: 5’ 10â€, 150lbs. He is a well-groomed, clean-shaven man in his mid-twenties with grayish-blue eyes and brown hair. He is commonly dressed in sneakers, slacks/jeans, a t-shirt with a tucked in button-up shirt worn over it.

Super: A figure standing almost 6’ tall but of a uniformly deep black. There are numerous tiny ‘sparkles’ or ‘bubbles’ of darkness close around him that appear and disappear at random as a continuous nimbus. The only color, light or mark on his black form is the two bright white pinpoints of his eyes.

    Personality:

Derrick is a semi-geek. He loves and enjoys science and can’t help be drawn by its mysteries. He will never be one of the great minds and he accepts that. But that doesn’t negate his curiosity. Sometimes his curiosity makes him forgetful of little things but for the most part it isn’t a negative thing.

Ever since he was a child, he has wanted to be a hero, to help others. The accident that somehow granted him his power gave him a chance to be one. Recent travels and meetings showed him how much he has to learn however. He has his idols and they are the standard to which he holds himself. While he has quite a bit of power behind him, he has little in the way of actual experience. This is what he is hoping to change; it what he needs to do to live up to the title of ‘hero’.

On a personal level, he is a happy and lively person. He is seldom ‘down’ or ‘depressed’ if it can be avoided. He has seen too much darkness and suffering in the galaxy and understands what they can really do to allow himself to travel down that path. He enjoys going out and being social, living and embracing life.

He is also extremely naïve socially. He is trusting and honorable to a fault. He believes in the inherent goodness of people. He believes in second, and third, and fourth chances for people and that Good will overcome. He isn’t quite a pacifist but he’d much rather talk a problem out than resort to violence.

    History:

Derrick Lumins was the younger of two children from Richard and Mary Lumins, born in July 7 1951. (His brother, Mark was almost 5 years older.) His childhood was nothing unusual and very nice. They were a solidly middle class family living in Freedom City. Mark was more of the jock type while Justin was more of the brainy type.

Like many kids, Derrick wanted to be special, a super hero. Of course, it wasn’t to be. Puberty came and went and nothing ‘super’ happened. He was a smart kid. Nothing exceptional but he worked hard and found he had a natural affinity for the physical sciences. It naturally led him to pursue a degree in that field.

While his brother was getting engaged and thinking of starting his own family, Derrick was graduating college with a Master’s degree. He loved the possibilities science showed him and how big the universe truly was. He had numerous possibilities. Sure, he wasn’t a genius but he was very skilled in his chosen field.

The space program was in its infancy in those days. He leapt at a chance to be one of the forerunners in the field. A government group doing all sorts of cutting edge, experimental research. A dream job. He doubled his efforts and dedicated himself to the project.

There were downsides of course. He didn’t get to see his family much. His social life became non-existent. Those things didn’t particularly bother him much. He had plenty of time to catch up with those things at a later date.

He excelled at his new job; loving the opportunities. But regardless of his skill, he was not invaluable. And while he put as much effort in as some of those geniuses, they were more important than he was. They were too valuable. So he went up on one of those early shuttles to implement an experiment.

Something happened during that experiment; he never had time to figure out what. One second, everything looked fine. And the next, the whole compartment was shaking violently. The last thing he saw before blackness claimed him was the entire compartment blowing up in his face.

He did not know what happened or how much time had passed. But when he woke up, he was drifting in the depth of space alone and without a suit. He was lost and had no real idea where in the galaxy he was.

Something had changed him. It took him weeks to fully figure out what his newfound abilities were and what they represented. Even longer to actually get a solid grip on them. But when he did, he was THRILLED!

In fact he was so excited by his newfound powers, he forgot about worry where he was. He was out in space where no human had gone before. He explored, experimented and enjoyed his new freedom.

Of course, he discovered quite a few things out there. Two massive star spanning empires. One quite decent, he thought. The other, not so much. He observed and helped where he could. There were dangers and evil in abundance. He had made a few blunders out here and made a few enemies. But there were also heroes. He met Daedalus and the Star Knights after a battle they had fought against the Grue. He helped them as he could and even offered to join them. He couldn’t join them of course, that wasn’t the way they worked. But they were definitely the ideal he wanted to emulate. Power he had, but he was young and inexperienced compared to them. Still he helped how he could. He needed training and practice if he wanted to be a true hero.

Soon Daedalus returned to Earth. The departure of his fellow human made him consider some things. Justin had been away for a long time with all of his wanderings. He hadn’t realized how long it had been. He began to wrap up and take care of the various things he had left out in the galaxy, loose ends, intending to return home. He needed to get some experience on a smaller scale.

By the time he was done, the latest Star Knight to Earth was wrapping up her training. Given his excessive warp speed, he offered to give her a lift, saving her time. Her jurisdiction was far reaching and she had lots of ground to cover. He might not be in her league but he was willing to help; even if it was just playing interstellar taxi. Regardless, it was nice to have company on the way home.

He had been away far longer than he realized and things had changed quite a bit. It didn’t take long to find out how much. In addition to the various technological changes, there were social and personal ones as well. His parents had passed away years before. His brother had passed only a few years before. Maria and Justin, Mark’s kids, were now in their mid to upper teens. If he’d been here, Derrick could have saved his brother and cured the illness. He regretted that fact a great deal and vowed to look after his sister-in-law and her kids. It was an odd meeting after so long, but it was the right thing to do.

With a little help, he set up a secret identity and found a place to live. It wasn’t much but since he’d been homeless and wandering the galaxy for about two decades, it was a big step. It was a start. Afterwards, he assumed his Dark Star persona. He intended to stay around the city but he had the ability to go quite far when needed. As Dark Star, he made himself available to the SCC. It helped provide him with some sporadic income (after some creative shuffling from some friends) for his expenses and helping out his family. Mostly, he spends time as Dark Star looking to do his part to protect his family, his city and his world from things that would threaten their peace and prosperity.

Since his reintegration into Earth, he has gotten to be fairly well known both on Earth as well as across the universe. He has butted heads with the big and small threats both here and abroad. He has thwarted numerous disasters and enemies from exploding suns to rogue empires to the Star Khan to leagues of evil back home. Mostly though, he spends his time in space. It is a big area and there are a lot of people out there who need help. First and foremost, he is and always will be a hero. He is there to help.

    Complications:

Code of Honor/Sense of Responsibility: He now has the chance to be one of his childhood heroes. And meeting true heroes like Daedalus or the Star Knights have given him a bar with which to measure himself. He does his utmost to be a True Hero, but feels he never does enough to get there. He does not believe in killing (though he has in fact taken lives, none have been human however). He believes that the strong should protect and defend the weak; it is their duty and their responsibility. Duty, honor and integrity are paramount and heroes don’t lie.

Family: Derrick feels a guilty over not being there for his parents and his brother. If he had simply come home instead of gallivanting around the galaxy, he brother would still be alive. He feels responsible and has made an effort to help take care of his brother’s (and now his) family.

Naive: Derrick/Dark Star is naïve in both his beliefs/trust in people as well as socially unaware. He will always attempt to talk a problem out first, often losing out on the first round of ‘combat’. He misses all but the most obvious social cues and often needs to have it spelled out to him.

Secret Identity: While possibly not necessary, Derrick does work to maintain a separate identity. It is a part of his life completely separated from being a hero (or at least he tries to keep it that way). Part of it is simply having a persona/place he can do to step back and relax from the high stakes stresses. Another is to protect those he cares about. Someday, he might wish to settle down, get married, have kids. All of that. (Not currently, but someday.) Those things won’t be possible if villains know who he is.

Stesha: He has come to care for her more than he would have thought possible and there is very little he wouldn’t do for her. Love can cloud a person’s judgement and make them forsake their duty.
