  1. The first part can be done as Force Field (Extra: Affects Others [+1 to get both others & yourself]; Power Feat: Progression [for up to eight people around you, all touching you]), or the Affects Others [+1] and Area/Radius extras to get a bigger group (who don't need to touch you).

The second part (if only protecting a group of folks some distance away, and not yourself) can be done with the Affects Others (+0 to change from "Personal" to "Touch"), Range/Ranged, and Area/Radius extras.

To do both simultaneously, you'd need... I'm not entirely certain.

I was thinking about an array actually.. If I put another force field power into the array, I could somehow make 2 forcefields, though at decreased strength right ?

  3. hmm.. I hadn't looked at it that way I guess... sometimes we have to stick to the system instead of logic, I can understand that :-D

still working on my character though.. it's frustrating to have so much possibilities...

  4. Barnum's right, FF canot be used to trap folks, no more than Ranged Protection could.

If you want to be able to use your FF to catch folks, use Create Object or Snare as an alternate power.

But looking at the extra's and power feats, it would seem that a force field, is literally a force field. It goes both ways.. bullets can't come into the force field, but they also can't come out.. unless you take a power feat..

or what about the flaw permanent ? it suggests that if you can't turn it off, you get trouble trying to eat something, since food can't penetrate the force field..

  5. Well, here's the problem with that: one, you cannot project your field at a distance unless you buy it up to ranged. If the people are in your field range already, it's fine, but then I don't understand why you wouldn't want to protect yourself as well.

Two, you cannot imprison people with a force field, or at least not an unenhanced one. You'd need to add on Affects Others and Attack (a +1 and +0 respectively) before you could do what you're talking about. At the price, it's cheaper to simply get Create Object at a high level and tack on Subtle 2 so they are invisible.

It's not a bad idea, though.

I think I understand what you mean, let me sum it up to see if I'm correct:

I could use the ranged extra to increase the range of my force field, but it's center point would still be on myself. I can't make the center point of the force field somewhere else then ? So that means I would always be in range of my own force field, which is why it's pointless not to include myself ?

because I basically want to be able to shield a small group of people around me, but be able to project a force field say 1000 yards away to protect a group of people there...

  6. the selective feat does that. I don't see why you'd want to do that, but yeah.

Tssk tssk, I would have expected a referee to see the use of a force field which I could use to protect a group of people from a distance.. protect or imprison of course :-D :super:

  7. Ghehe, something I was already expecting of course .. :-D

However, when giving the area extra, does that also mean I can shield others, not including myself ?

  8. Try an area Force Field with the Selective feat. It's modeled like this:

Force Field (rank) (Feats: Selective; Extras: Area +1) [3Xrank+1 pp]

Where rank is the number of levels of force field you want.

    Solve for X. :D

Base cost for Force Field is only 1p/rank, so why the 3X ?

  9. That's what I figured tnx ;-)

Sorry for my bothersome questions, but trying to check out my options here :-D

So.. suppose I want to be able to use telekinesis to lift up multiple items, and/or be able to crush those multiple items, while still maintain control over what I lift/crush... can't I just take the Area Extra, and apply the Selective power feat ?

For example, I want to be able to lift everything up on the street in the area I designate, except for my buddy who was standing in the middle of the area...

    Also, would this be possible?:

    Pyschic Powers Array:

*TKinesis 10 (Damaging, Perception; Subtle, Alternate Power x2)

    *TKinesis 10 (Damaging, Area; Subtle)

    Total Points: 44pp

This way, the Alternate Power's Array power's cost do not exceed the base power's cost right ? Swapping out Perception extra for Area extra keeps the costs the same.. not counting the alternate power feats as cost for the original power itself of course..

  10. If I wanted to change my forcefield into a field that surrounds me and the people standing next to me (but not touching me) and a force field I could project to shield other with, maybe even shield 2 groups at the same time (though probably with reduced effectiveness) wouldn't that make the power insanely expensive..

I'm also a little puzzled with power feats and extra's I'd need to apply. Anyone have some basic template with which I could work.. ?

  11. Yes. But for uses of Telekinesis that were not "attacks" (grapple, trip, damage, etc.), all you would need to remedy this is the Selective Power Feat. If you have the Area Extra and want to make attacks on only some people in the area, then you would need the Selective Extra.

That array doesn't work because the power in the second array slot is more expensive than the base power.

    You could do . . .

    Tk 10 [Extras]

    Alt - TK 10 [Extra]

    Alt - TK 10

    Cost = 42 PPs.

I don't think the 2nd alternate power is needed. The damaging extra itself states that dealing damage with telekinesis is optional... It states I CAN do damage with it, so that would mean it's optional right.. ?

  12. Indeed. Power Feats can be used for a power, but Extras must be used.

    Examples

Blast 10 (PF: Homing). At any given round, you can choose to have the Blast be homing or not.

Blast 10 (Extra: Radius Area). Every time you use the Blast, it will be an area-affect thing.

You can, as Barnum says, get Alternate Powers of some Effect (building it as an Array) to have different versions of it. Ex:

TK 20 (PF: 2 Alt Powers)

    * TK 15 (Extra: Area)

    * TK 10 (Extras: Area, Damaging)

    (total cost: 42pp)

Hmm, what would Telekinesis with only the Area extra do ? lift everything in the area at once ?

I would make it more like this:

TK 10 (PF: 1 Alt Power)

    * TK 10 (Damaging)

    * TK 10 (Damaging. Area)

(Total cost: 31pp, if I'm not mistaken)

  13. Good Morning, Afternoon, and Evening! (Depending on where you are and when you're reading this) Thanks for stopping by to help me with my idea and hopefully lead me towards a decision that is worthwhile and fits within the confines of this wonderful Freedom City Play By Post Forum. After scanning several builds I noticed the common build types that occur in most games: Heroes and Villains that have powers they can use and gain some benefit from. That's all well and good, but what about the few who seem to possess powers that only work on others? Worse yet, make them wanted by others, no matter what the poor soul wants himself?

I've found myself thinking about making a character mainly centered around the Boost Power (Others Only). While I envision it being the 4 points per rank power, I would not be opposed to the 5 points per rank power option, boosting every trait the subject has. (Although I fear this would be overpowering and might disrupt the game itself - I would be willing to pay double the points per rank or something if this is an option at a very high price) The actual mechanics of the Boost, while not too extreme when considering PL caps even with the +2 rule, are not my concern. I am interested in the roleplay consequences of creating a power battery for others to use and potentially abuse, with little regard to what my character wants.

Now we have the poor guy who Boosts anyone who touches him, but that's not so bad, right? Just hide out, wear long sleeves, you'll be fine - no one has to even know about it. (And if I was a good and benevolent person that would be the case) Enter, Pheromones. Imagine everyone around you suddenly becoming very interested in you, almost to an unnerving degree? There's something oddly alluring about this one, you just can't place your finger on it. I see him almost radiating power, drawing people to him as they are lost within it, never consciously realizing it. Surely one could be addicted to Boost longterm, it may even be intoxicating to those who experience it over and over again.

*Ahem* But is that enough? The guy who attracts people to him and empowers them to levels beyond their maximum ability, what more could he need? I've thought about tossing in another Power or two, to give him a bit more versatility or usefulness to others. Healing (an obvious choice) would make him indespensible to any team (Hero and Villain alike), as a pocket power battery and medical kit. Power Resistance (Affects Others, Others Only) could be an interesting dynamic, helping others resist powers while they remain in contact with our tragic hero. Empowerment also seems viable, allowing others to tap into even more powers which may include: Growth, Power Control, Super Speed, Adrenal Surge, Energy Aura...the list is really endless here.

As you can clearly see, I have a lot of ideas, a rough concept, and no real guidance. I talked to the amazing Veiled Malice who was helpful, but felt I should post my ideas here for all to see and evaluate. I'm not out to make a character that is better or more important than anyone else, just focus on a different aspect of the typical power scene. Let me know what you think, I'm happy you made it to the end. Thanks for your time!

Well, I think the character concept itself is quite challenging. Especially considering you're totally dependent on other to survive probably. Unless you use your gift to attract a lot of worshippers who worship you for your power, and protect you, you'll be dragged all along the battlefield, be it for good or evil..

definately an interesting character concept, though I wonder how long a person could keep up with playing a character like that, you must be a real masochist..

  14. Yes you can make Telekinesis having both Area and Damage extras. But problem with it is that you will effect in all area even the allies unless you also take Selective Attack extras too.

Yes, well, I don't Have to use the extra right ? I can choose to activate it without the extra, and when I decide lots of people need to get pain, I can use it with the extra.

  15. If I wanted to give my Telekinesis a Damage extra, but would want the character to be able to do that damage to an entire area, could I accomplish that with the "area" extra ?

  16. I don't know if this has been covered, but the Alternate Powers in an Array should probably have some kind of logic to them as well. Putting TK and TP in a Psychic array makes sense, as does Flight if the Flight is also psychically based (in this case, probably a variation on TK). If the Flight power came from wings or a jetpack, that wouldn't really fit in the array, unless the wings or jetpack were created/powered by psychic energy.

Of course, but tnx for the reminder.

  17. Yeah, I understood that very well, tnx a lot.

But I could combine Telekinesis/Telepathy, since I'm not really expecting them to be used at the same time...

Maybe even flight included in the array..

But I'm more trying to think up a PL6 hero character, but there's so many cool abilities to choose from ! :bunny:

  18. so, all the extra powers, are that cheap to put into an array ? You basically pay 1 pp for a complete extra power...

(although of course, with the drawback of not being able to use them at the same time)

didn't think an array of powers would be that cheap..

but It's clear now, tnx

  19. Right what he said. It works out really well for travel powers and attack powers. Since you can only use one of those at a time in a round anyway. It is much less ideal for defensive powers. Since A Blast +10 turns your forcefield off completely.

You should make a list of the powers you definitely want. We'll try to whip up a quick little array and the powers at the same time and give you an idea of what you could get. So far the powers you described in array shouldn't cost you more than 50-75 points done right.

I understand that, but you're giving an entire new example again, while I'd just like to understand how the 4 powers described above in an array cost only 23pp ? Because I still don't understand that calculation, and I'd like to understand it, cos I'll have a better understanding of the system..

  20. I was putzing around on Deviant art looking at pictures for character designs when I came to this guy's site. Wen-M. My god, his pictures are gorgeous! *dies*

    I think I'm in love <3 ..erm..

Anyway, All of the pictures were labelled as being for this game called Anima. I wondered if it was a video game or something and looked it up. Looks like it's this nifty RPG game like M&M but in Spanish -_-

Anyway, check out his pictures though! just those alone make me want to play the game: http://wen-m.deviantart.com/gallery/#_featured--5

My favorites are Bella and ?? No.4. just..so beautiful

I think I'm in love as well... :-S

  21. So say you've got a "Psychic Power" Array. Telekinesis 10 (PFs: 3 Alternate Powers: Flight 10, Force Field 10 [impervious], Telepathy 10). Total Cost: 20+3 = 23pp

    Only 23pp's ?!?!

Could you breakdown the costs seperately for me ? I'm really confused now. Or maybe I'm just confused about Arrays.

I was already wondering how alternate powers are purchased, but I hadn't expected them to be just Power Feats..

  22. Well, I would just want 1 form which to shift to.. when I get angry.. which will probably not happen very often.

So that would mean I just need 2 seperate characters right ?

Anyway, working on a PL6 character while I ponder some more about my PL10 character anyway, I'm in no rush.

I must admit, I find the UP rules for creating powers a bit more complex than the original rules. I'm having a hard time understandig when I have to take something as an alternate power or as a power feat.. or as an extra ?

For example, if I wanted to include the following powers as a group (Think it's called "Array" ?) how would I do that most efficiently.. ?

Telekinises, Telepathy, Flight, and Force Field

Also, what are the drawbacks of an array over taking the powers seperately ? Wouldn't it mean that when I have a set of powers in an array, that I can't activate them simultaneously ? I would like to be able to Fly, have a force field, AND use my telepathy at the same time...

  23. Btw, I was planning on giving my character an alternate identity, like when he gets angry or enraged for instance.. I thought the Evolutionary Shift power (p.155) looked quite interesting.

Could you tell me something about that ? from what I understand, you just get to design a 2nd character (minus the evolutionary shift points) with all new abilities and stats ?

.. I was thinking about making a totally psionic entity with it, with telekinesis, telepathy, and perhaps some more..

  24. Ghehe, well I've played a wolf-born werewolf (Lupus) in a White-Wolf Werewolf campaign once. Which can be quite interesting if you think I eventually used the car-radio as a weapon cause I thought it was a bomb..

but mostly, people will think you're a power-player if you create a character with no family nor relatives.

.. of course, I am still a power-player, but I still need to have an interesting character concept to enjoy playing the game...

  25. You'll need a really good backstory to justify having all those different power sources -- I can't think of many characters who have powers from three sources, let alone five. ;)

Well maybe I'll surprise you. I've typed only 3 pages of background so far :-P

Shapechanging into people would be the Morph power. Shapechanging into Animals would be the Shapeshift power (Flawed to being only able to shapeshift into animals)... unless you want to only be able to shapeshift into human-sized animals (and not actually gain any of their abilities, like claws or wings/flight), in which case that can be done with Morph, too.

Hmm, I'll look into it, tnx

    Any more suggestions ? :-D
