    Tarva had distracted Ben from everything else, and then her dogs had distracted him from Tarva, but Tarva reclaimed Ben's attention with just a few words. He stammered and blushed. "Oh, uh, I, um, uh, thanks! I, uh, just like dogs, and I guess they like me? I mean, these ones are super-freaky, but, like, so am I, so maybe, y'know..."

    "Wha-Hey Mia WAI-Aw MAN." Ben looked up and reached out toward Mia but she was already gone before he could finish his sentence. "'Scuse me one sec." He held up a finger, then flexed to open up the flesh-pocket on his hip where his phone was stashed. He punched in a quick text message to Mia. Hey, you OK? I know it's a kinda heavy scene with all these A-list types, and Eira bein' EXTRA diva-mode. I can duck into an empty room if you wanna BAMF back here and grab me. But, like, if you wanna be alone right now, that's cool too.

    After a few moments, the Fryxian looked up at his companions, as if the sound of their voices had been delayed and was only then reaching his ears. The metal storm ceased. Loose objects fell and clattered across the floor. He slowly rose to his feet, his gaze floating from one side of the room to the other and back again, surveying the destruction and disorder. He turned to Archeville and cleared his throat. "For the moment, I lack the funds to compensate you for...this. But if my payment at the end of this venture is insufficient, then I will provide whatever labor you deem fair in recompense." His eyes widened when he glanced down and saw the wounds in Starlok's leg. He knelt down and retrieved a random utensil from the floor. "You have been injured by my hand, without just cause. Honor demands the same of me." He jammed the utensil into his own thigh meat, strangling his own scream with tightly-clenched teeth.

    The woman in black and red raised an eyebrow at the robot, then chuckled, and responded in kind. "<I understand why you would think so. I deal in death, and the dead. That is a taboo in this culture, so those who take up its symbols inspire fear. And most of those who seek to inspire fear do, as you suggest, have ill intent. I confess I have only recently begun to view my actions in the context of the 'superheroes and supervillains' paradigm. I would certainly not consider myself 'a villain', though most villains would say the same. 'Superhero' is not a label I am entirely comfortable with adopting yet, but the associate who directed me to this meeting made a case for it that I cannot refute.>"

     

    The robot's query triggered an uncomfortable amount of introspection, which Ximena wasn't about to share with the group.

    I wasn't a hero, or a villain. I was a victim.

    And then I was just a victim who was trying not to be a victim anymore.

    There were plenty of times when I stood by and allowed "villainy" to take place. My interference would certainly have failed, and cost me my life and possibly my soul in the process. Back then, I lacked the knowledge and power necessary to oppose evil. Letting it exist then was the price I paid to be able to oppose it now. Nobody else could teach me what I needed to know. Sacrifices had to be made. I played the long game.

    That's what I tell myself when I try to sleep.

Regardless, I can meet you in whatever place you choose. The laws of space and time work differently in the Underworlds than they do here. For one who can walk those paths, physical distance in this world matters little."

    Nobody sees the scroll with everybody's words as text except for Waverider.

    Everyone else sees glowing subtitles in the air whenever someone else signs or speaks a language they don't know.

    Octoman glanced up from the clothes just in time to see Artificer's educational exchange with Veronica. "Not to be confused with the ONLINE Silk Road that was named after it. That one DEFINITELY 'traded' in stuff other than silk, 'of a more exotic nature'. Drugs, guns, murder-for-hire, you name it. Last one's what finally got the hackers who ran it caught by the Feds. But, like, it's one of those things, on the Dark Web, it's still the Wild West, like, whazzat thing called, cut off one head, two grow back...griffon? Nah...manticore? Damn, I had this..."

    The doors to the Matthias Cooke wing burst open, and rap music started loudly playing.

    A few moments later, the source of the music was revealed, a brown-skinned boy of amiguous ethnicity with a mid-sized curly Afro hairstyle. He was one of the few Claremont students who could push a door open well ahead of his arrival to it, thanks to the almost dozen stretchy tentacles sprouting out of his body, most of which currently each held a small portable speaker, only a few inches long but surprisingly powerful, especially when one used half a dozen of them at once. The boy half-walked, half-danced down the sidewalk and across the grass of the quad in time with the music. He couldn't hear the music anymore except in his head, but the phone in his pocket and the smartwatch on his wrist vibrated loudly in time with the beat. He wore what had become his signature yellow and black hooded jacket over a white t-shirt dominated by the black silhouette of a gecko and a simple pair of baggy blue jeans. New students who hadn't been alerted to his shapeshifting powers wondered if he had any other clothes in his closet, but by now most knew better. The shirt and jacket both appeared to have holes cut in them to accommodate his many tentacles, one of many details he'd gradually added to this "default" shape for the sake of verisimilitude, though the way the holes moved to accommodate every movement of the tentacles was still too perfect for normal fabric. He wore a pair of sunglasses, but when he saw the red-haired girl, he lifted them up onto his forehead, and they melted into his skin and vanished. "Hello hello!" While the boy pointed twin finger-guns at Muirne, the several tentacles that weren't holding speakers all moved in unison to poke the "PAUSE" buttons, cutting off the music with an amazing display of coordination enabled by all the extra brain tissue running through the boy's body. He diverted his path slightly to intercept the group assembled around Muirne, bumping fists with Eira once he got within arms reach. Close observers could see that he rarely looked anyone in the eye, instead focusing on their mouths. "Sick shirt. Who's the fresh fish?"

  15. Santa Muerte

     

    When the woman in black and red saw Waverider's written greeting, she set aside her noodles, closed her eyes, and whispered a short incantation in Ancient Atlantean while pressing her palms together and then folding them open like a book. "<Our words shall be seen by those who cannot hear them, and their words, heard by we who cannot see them. All shall understand and be understood, and all shall be revealed.>" Green flames erupted from the woman's eyes, vanishing as quickly as they appeared, though her once-brown eyes remained bright green in color. A translucent scroll of parchment appeared and unfurled in the air in front of Waverider's eyes, set off to the side of her field of vision. It wouldn't block her view, and it was easy to glance at. The layout of the scroll was similar to an online chatroom, with a small bust of each assembled hero painted next to words which were written on the scroll as they talked. When another person spoke, the image "scrolled up" in the traditional sense, the top of the parchment winding in as the bottom wound out, the new speaker's picture and words appearing below the previous ones. The font of the text changed in size and style to match their tone of voice. No one but Waverider could see the image. Meanwhile, whenever Waverider or Kanunu or anyone else signed, everyone else could now see glowing subtitles appear under their hands. In Protectron's case, the text was blurry and broken in many places, difficult to read.

     

    She fixed her gaze on Justice again. "You called this gathering, and you said that you wanted us to 'get organized'. What specifically did you have in mind?"

  17. Santa Muerte

     

    The woman in black and red didn't make or seek any introductions when she approached the group. In fact, she barely seemed to register their presence at all. Instead, she moved directly to the restaurant counter and placed an order, paying in cash. Only when that transaction was concluded did she take a seat near the other assembled heroes. She quietly listened to Justice's entire rambling speech, looking her right in the eye with an unbroken stare the entire time, her own face devoid of emotion. Only after Justice trailed off did Santa Muerte speak.

     

    "Your aim is noble, but you see only part of the whole. Science and technology run amok are not the only plagues afflicting our community. This shining city on a hill casts a shadow, and in that shadow dwell lost souls and creatures from Below, hunting and feeding with impunity, making their home in our world as if it were theirs. I have found an ample supply of demons and restless spirits who required my aid in moving on to their final reward or returning to the pits that spawned them. Sometimes that aid is accepted willingly, and sometimes it is not. And the supply shows no signs of dwindling."

     

    She walked over to the counter to retrieve her bowl of noodles, brought it back to her seat, and sampled it. "The friend who alerted me to this gathering also assured me that this place had...what was the phrase? 'Positive Yelp reviews.' These are quite good."

     

  18. Santa Muerte

     

    Ximena hadn't known what HeroHouse was, or that it even existed, until Atzi brought Justice's post to her attention. She hadn't thought of herself as "a superhero" until her friend and business partner helped her connect the dots. She didn't think of her spells as "powers", but they did allow her to do things ordinary people couldn't do. Nor did she think of her clothes and vestments as "a costume", but she had to admit that they, too, set her apart from the majority. The locals who had seen her in action had even provided her with a superhero name, dubbing her "Santa Muerte", the Lady of Holy Death. She had to admit it: "I'm a superhero." And thus, the call to arms from this "Justice" person included her.

     

    Inside the restaurant, a bloody gash appeared in the air itself, sliced with a curved blade, transparent and glowing green, wielded by a dark-skinned hand covered in silver rings and bracelets. The woman the hand belonged to stepped through the gash, parting the flesh of the universe like curtains, revealing only darkness underneath. The breach healed behind her as soon as she stepped through. She wore a black corset over an elaborate multi-layered ankle-length bell-sleeved dress of the same color, under a scarlet cloak. Her face was concealed behind a mask carved to resemble a human skull so closely that observers had to wonder if it was authentic. A smooth oblong black gem was set into the forehead of the mask. Everything about the woman reeked of magical energy to Salvo, but the stone's aura shined the brightest of all.

     

    The green sickle vanished from the woman's hand. She reached up and pulled down her hood, then pulled off her mask, revealing several necklaces, ear and facial piercings, and long white hair she shook loose. Under the mask her face was covered in extensive skull-face makeup of the sort one would see at a Mexican "Day of The Dead" celebration; while the mask had been on, the dark circles around her eyes and nose had enhanced its visual effect. She saw the colorfully-dressed motley crew gathered at the far end of the restaurant and made her way toward them, the heels of her boots clacking against the floor. As she walked past the booths and tables, she was hit with a sudden vision of death to come, a charred corpse fused to the seat of a car, with other cars backed up in front of it in lines as far as the eye could see in every direction. She stopped and grabbed the shoulder of one of the seated customers, turning to look down at him.

     

    "You drive to work?"

    "Um...yeah?"

    "Take the bus."

     

  19. Persephone

     

    Camellia did indeed hit the nearest coffee shop drive-thru on her way to Oldcorne, where she ordered more coffee for herself and Betsy, and Chris's requested drink, along with a breakfast sandwich and a muffin to sate the young man's poorly-concealed hunger. She pretended not to notice when he offered his card at first, and then she shrugged. "Oh shoot, sorry Sugar Plum, I already paid with my phone. Oh well!"

     

    She drove slowly through the streets of Oldcorne, looking around for any buildings that matched her vision from the flowers while listening to Betsy's tale. "Some night soon we're going to open a bottle of wine and you're going to tell me that Catholic school story. So if the New Orleans vampires were hiding in a convent, does that mean that this batch was, too? Should we focus our search on churches? Oldcorne's certainly got more than her fair share."

     

  20. Mister Strix

     

    When the blood started dripping into the pale man's open mouth, the charred gashes on his chest did indeed begin to knit themselves back together. The more blood Lucy poured down his throat, the faster his flesh regenerated. Once the wounds were closed, when little but scarring remained, his limp form sprang to life, his fingers digging divots out of the floor. He roared again, then collected himself. He touched a finger to catch a drop of blood at his lips, then looked up at Lucy and her bottle. "Thanks. I owe you one." He glanced around as he rose to his feet and stripped off the burnt and slashed up remains of his shirt and jacket. "Sorry about the mess." He sniffed the air. "I was...burning...why was I..." Then he sniffed again and growled. "Still got his scent. Sorry, no time to chat, rabid dog to put down." He ran out of the club, the same white blur as when he'd run back in, though, as before, his footfalls jackhammering the floor didn't make a sound.

    Starlok placed her hand on his arm. "Are you alright?" Her voice came out softer than she intended. Her face screwed up, and she righted herself. "You better be alright, Dirge. We cannot afford you to get ill right before we make our way into the belly of the ship."

     

    The Fryxian waved them away. "BAH, don't waste your time, Terran. I have drunk entire LEGIONS of Lor under the table! My..." He became distracted by his own hand motions, since, to his eye, they were leaving a trail of after-images in the air in front of him. He remembered his companions a few moments later. "In fact, I have never felt BETTER!" Technically, this was true. The euphoria racing through Dirge's body made him feel like he could take on the Star-Khan's entire armada and win. "Any demons lying in wait for us shall find only THEIR OWN DOOM this day!"

    Suddenly the lights flickered inside the Stigmata, before flickering inside Archeville's ship as well. A woman's bloodcurdling howl of anguish emanated throughout the bowels of the great vessel. A tall, blue Fryxian woman appeared. Patches of fur had been torn out, and she seemed to have been burned by blaster fire. Her screams stopped, and she turned to Dirge, flat faced.

     

    "Kanemu, why did you leave me?"


    Just as quickly as she appeared, the woman vanished, and the flickering stopped.

     

    "NO!" Dirge lunged toward the woman, seeking to wrap her in his arms and turn her away from her attackers, presenting himself as a target instead, but she vanished before he could get a grip. He stumbled to his knees in the spot where she had stood. Then he screamed in frustration, and every loose metal object in the room flew in a random direction.
