    College Visit

Well, if everyone else is ready, I suppose we could get started- I'm not completely sure where to start, but I think a basic double checking of the roll call's a good one: Seren - Blue Blaster - Ready Thevshi - Velocity - Heridfel - Hub - Folkert - Lion - If ready in time (I'm thinking that if Lion gets added before or just after the school comes under attack - however that'll go - he should be easy enough to add in.) As for which story... I think the Mad Scientist would work best. Obviously that means we'll need a GM at some point, although how long can vary. A new thought - Hub would be free to be the tour guide, and have decent to good reason to recognize Lion if he shows up (Although, all of us might - Velocity and I both have Well-informed). Plus, it would get all three of us together in a reasonable, if unlikely, way (and really, isn't that the comic way?). If one of you two have a really good idea to set the scene, I'm fine with someone else posting first.

Makes sense. Just some thoughts... Lion came to visit, and Kevin happened to be nearby, so he was asked to show him around. Meanwhile, Velocity and Blue Blaster happen to get into the same small group being shown around the college campus (just a small group, led by one of the students). As we're being shown around, the student leading us recognizes one (or both) of them as they're passing close by. After a bit of talking (depending on how it works), a break in the tour takes place, where we can go on our own for an hour or so, probably for lunch - this would be when Oliver plans to take off and when the villain makes his presence known.

Of course I add that without checking... But, like I said - probably. And as you said - she's actually a PL11, but has been around enough to be able to go up to PL12. The PL8 and PL12 were just rough guesses, so the PL12s are fine. (Looks like there're 2 PL12 Heroes) As for Lion, it could work. I'm not completely sure when it would be starting, but even if you don't get through before it starts, he might be able to come by afterwards (obviously, this'll all be based on when it begins and ends).

Maybe if it's just you (and maybe one other PL10), we go with the Scientist - that way everyone can go against Thugs for minion-bashing, then can split up against the slightly weaker (but with decent equipment) Mad Scientist or the Savage Man-Beast (depending which they think they can pull off). If one group has trouble, the other could help - I generally am seeing it as the Mad Scientist being kept busy until the ones that can finally stop him arrive (or just take him off). But if it's the beast that's causing trouble, then maybe the scientist has something designed to stop it. But if a third PL10 wants in, we could go with a Simian (possibly with another villain, Simian or otherwise) - the ones that can't deal with the Simian can be busy with the animals let loose and the students that were in the halls at the time. (As I hope you know, when I say PL6 - I mean characters that started at 6 and by PL10, those that started at 10. Higher is fine, although PL8s should probably consider themselves in the 10 if they're capped, and PL12s are probably a bit too high...)

Well, yeah, I was looking at that... Looking over what might work (for the lower PLs), that's already statted - I'm finding Mad Scientist, Master of Disguise, Sinister Simian, even the Vampire Lord (although Oliver will have a lot of trouble)... Going from that... The Vampire Lord might be a stretch, but could have a number of lesser vampires among the students... Sinister Simian - could do something similar to the Going Ape! or Animal Kingdom capers, having to battle animals (natural or students turned into animals, depending which is used) to get to the Simian itself. Master of Disguise - might be a bit more difficult to do... I'm not sure on one involving him yet. Mad Scientist - I'm picturing something similar to The Supervillain Factory caper. We could even have a Savage Man-Beast (or something else) for the PL10s to face off against. He's got 20 points into minions, which would be about 10 ranks of a Heroic Minion and Savage Man-Beast needs 9 ranks. That leaves enough for a Thug minion - for extras, as they suggest, they can take from the equipment feats (10 Thugs leaves Equipment 17). Well, interaction's always good at least. Plus, as I said earlier, a Savage Man-Beast could easily be thrown in (if it's a Mad Scientist) for you higher PLs to bring down while us lower PLs can go for the Scientist. ...I think I like this path of ideas. The Mad Scientist came to Freedom College, not for equipment but for the athletes - figuring that all he needs is tougher subjects that can survive the process longer. He brought along his 'best' subject (the Savage Man-Beast) and a group of Thugs (paid to help, future test subjects, and for some unexpected twists - current test subjects) - After all, they've got 3 points that can be added without upping the Minion cost. Although the Sinister Simian could be interesting too - the PL10s go for the ring-leader, while the PL6s get the animals under control and keep the students safe. I'm still open to ideas, of course. :)

Actually, Freedom College might work best for Oliver, funnily enough. He's not likely going to go there (he's more likely to be going to FCU), so he wouldn't be too worried about cutting out early. Then again, he'll be at FDR at least another year (I'm going between him being a Junior and going into his Junior year). Plus he could use a melee fighter...

I was thinking on ways to introduce my character, Blue Blaster, and thought that a High School trip would be a decent one - then I thought, why not a College Visit. Opens it up to allowing more people to be potentially involved (anyone with a reason for being at the college), which gives him more opportunities to meet other heroes (and villains). Anyway, the general idea was that he's on a college visit (planning to skip out early to go on patrol in costume - so he's got it with him) to one of the colleges (depending if others are interested, but certain schools make more sense to them than others). Before or as he's headed out (either before he gets a chance to change or while he's in the middle of changing), a villain makes their presence known at the school. My first thought was that it be in a building with a number of classrooms, probably with some classes in progress. The villain takes over the office, sending minions to secure the building. Oliver (and, I suspect, others) are in the hall or bathrooms - having to get past the mooks and to the office to get the villain out. So, thought I'd put it up to see if anyone's interested and if so, any preferences or thoughts they'd have on it. (Of course, I'll take thoughts from people not interested for whatever reason as well...)

  14. Alright, I do agree with that - cheaper for higher ranks to buy Protection linked with Shrinking at 5 points per size category rather than Shrinking + Normal Toughness at 8 points per size category. I went ahead and added the Normal Movement feat. At lesser distances, I've noticed that shorter people seem to be faster - maybe I just know more short athletes and tall non-athletes than normal... Anyway, for longer distances (in costume), I can use my Rocket Pack (which if I happen to be shrunk shouldn't be reduced - so it makes sense). Speaking of the Rocket Pack, however... This is actually something I decided early on point-wise, so it wasn't just a matter of needing the point. Because of how the armor pads are set up, as well as how the rocket pack was designed, Oliver found that he couldn't attach them together well. So, the pack is connected in a similar manner to a backpack's straps. People with a fair amount of experience (make a successful disarm attack) can find a point that will snap it's connection with the suit, causing it to become unattached (or, the weapon gets caught in the armor's padding) If not in use, it'll generally drop to the ground (or be grabbed if done unarmed, of course). If it is in use, however - well, Oliver's in trouble. It'll stop fairly quickly, as will Oliver, but not in the same place. That's why he tends to stay low to the ground when he does fly.

  16. Most of that appears to be correct. The smoke pellets are mainly for when he gets into trouble and needs to get out, as you'll note his non-blaster abilities are limited. They're easily made and small enough to keep on him (also allowing him an escape to change if none are available). They work better than I thought (which is fine - he can use the extra time). For the Linking, the +0 value is correct (change size with shape) - it just helps him duplicate the target if he's trying to. That is a point about the range - the idea being that the subject now required by both (Shapeshift and Size Changing) would have to be at touch range. Although it would be the same cost and still work without linking the Mind Reading in it - meaning he'd need 2 rounds to change physically and add their thoughts to his mind, but he could also pick up what the person's thinking about without it (and fast enough to do other stuff). In short, if needed, I think removing the Link to Mind Reading would be just fine. As for the Size Changing array, I asked here (admittedly, it was about Mimic specifically), and you gave it as a -2 flaw. You also put the Normal Toughness in. If it would help, I would go for the +1 Linked (which, if I remove it from Mind Reading), would be from just the array before buying off the Limited flaw from Shapeshift (which would be rank by rank) - with the Size Changing still requiring a subject but able to become other shapes (spending the points on size if I had no subject but wanted to grow). Or would that just be an AP of a non-linked Shapeshift? I seem to remember seeing something like that, but I forget where.

  18. Player's Name: Seren Power Level: 7 (94 PPs) Unspent PPs: 4 Character's Name: Blue Blaster Alternate Identity: Oliver Knight Height: 5' 8" Weight: 154 lbs. Hair: Brown Eyes: Hazel Description: Oliver isn't bad-looking, but he doesn't really catch anybody's eyes. He's actually begun getting a stronger build since he started going on patrols during school - not that he was weak before, however. In costume, the Blue Blaster has a fairly simple looking costume based on his mother's retired designs. It's made of an absorbant padding covering nearly his entire body and has a simple headpiece with heat-sensors in the visor. His jetpack is attached to the costume, just barely better than straps over the shoulders. In his right hand is his signature weapon, which is also based on his mother's design and appears to be a standard energy gun. Despite that, it is not designed to be lethal (although Oliver suspects a high enough setting could make it potentially lethal). History: Oliver Knight thought he was a fairly normal kid. Both his parents were alive, together and happy. They lived in Kingston in North Freedom his whole life and he liked going to Franklin D. Roosevelt High in Midtown. It had problems, but it was good enough for him. Up until high school, Oliver tried to fit into a couple different groups. Slowly, he began to develop a dislike of things that were done to fit in around the same time he was feeling that he didn't want to be in the crowd. He started to discover his abilities while helping some friends set up for a play. Some of the scenery was quite heavy, so he was helping to carry pieces around. As he and his friend were positioning the tree, he got a sudden headache and passed out, nearly knocking over the tree. When he came to, he was getting memories coming up in his head that he didn't remember. It got wierder when he mentioned names and places from them, because his friend recognized them - and knew he hadn't told anyone else. The trio began to try figuring it out, quickly coming to the conclusion that Oliver could read peoples thoughts after a few seconds of contact. Oliver realized what it meant, that he could learn anything nearly instantly. He realized that if he could gain the memories of the brainier students, he could easily keep his grade up without actually having to sit through the class. All it would take is a few seconds of physical contact and it would be like he was there and paying attention. To further this end, he began palm-reading for students at very cheap costs. Thanks to his abilities, he could pick up knowledge from them to 'prove' he wasn't faking as well as knowing what they want or expect to hear. After a while, people began noticing that he'd have little changes day to day. Maybe it would be his eye color changed, maybe he seemed a little bigger, maybe a little more sure of himself. It changed a bit when he decided to go on a larger scale. His dad, Shane, was a programmer for USNet, and Oliver thought it could be useful to have some of the information from him and planned to write it down so he'd remember it after he returned his head to normal. Before he did so, however, he thought he'd also borrow his mother's, Jamie's, memory to gather the family memory into one. That's when he got a bit of a shock. He thought his mom just stayed home, but in fact she had been a Gadgeteer, having retired when he was born. She wasn't one of the greats, but he could see the skill behind the stuff she built while she was active. Even better, he realized that he also knew how to duplicate them. 20. Thanks! I was actually fine not having alternate powers, but that's simple enough that I like it. (Not that I haven't done quite complicated stuff before - for an example, see my Iron Man at ATT) But five points plus the needed costs is a nice thing. Errata, my old foe, you strike again... As for your question, Doctor, I did think about that. It ended up being the story I had in mind for his early power usage that suggested Shapeshift wasn't right. It's also partially why I said form-changer, rather than shapeshifter (although I knew it wasn't the best choice). See, he's able to manipulate his own body to the point that he can manipulate his own mind. He finds it easier when he's able to touch someone with the desired result, because his body is able to sense what needs to be changed. He doesn't know that - what he knows is that he can learn things others know by touching them (and has slowly come to realize that it's not just information he picks up, but the ability to use it). Eventually (or at creation, depending on point requirements), I'm thinking he'll pick up a low ranked Shapeshift (possibly linked to Mimic) to show him getting past the idea that he needs to have someone else to base his form on, although it does help. Mentally, of course, he still needs it, because you can't easily imagine another person's mind. So, currently, I'm thinking it'll be more convoluted than that - He's a body manipulator (does that work?) that thinks he's a mimic that pretends he's a palm-reader (really, it's just an excuse to give him time to use his power) and does heroics.
  21. 22. Okay, so I finally figured out a concept that I'd like to play, and was working on the set-up for his powers and quickly came up to a question. The idea is that he's a Form Changer, but is currently believes he's actually a Mimic. Anyway, I wanted to make it so it would be easier for him to gain or lose size than most Mimics of equal power, so I thought I'd give him Growth and Shrinking. But I wasn't quite sure how much to cost the size change abilities. Specifically, how much is the limit to only being usable when mimicing targets of a different size category (Large or bigger for Growth, Small or smaller for Shrinking)? I would think it's either a -2 flaw or a -1 flaw and a Drawback. If it's a Drawback, how much would it be worth? Just to explain, I'm basing it on the power being linked to Mimic with the +1 extra, limited to only being able to be used while (actively) mimicing for a -1 flaw. But, they aren't even that useful, because he can only grow using it if mimicing a target larger than Medium size and shrink only if mimicing a target smaller than Medium size. So, yes, basically it makes it so that I don't have to use Mimic points on size changes (although, I'm only planning to have 4 ranks, so it would still be necessary if I want to grow to Huge or shrink to Tiny). Plus, while it's technically possible for him to use it seperate from the target's appearance (as far as I know), he'll generally only be using it while copying appearances. Although, while I'm at it, if it was a different size category, would it change how it affects the power? Also, in this case, should I take the size changes in account for PL (I ask because I only grow/shrink when I could mimic it anyway)? Lastly, so I know, are the maximum ranks per ability limited by the number of ranks in Mimic or allowed to go as high as the original owner and Mimic ranks allow? If they're limited, are the trade-offs of rank vs. points allowed? (I hope that all made sense, and thanks in advance!)
