Cutting off the Supply (IC)

Net Fly breathed a sigh of relief, at the sight of the rescucitated criminal. The more his partner talked, the more he got the impression that this was nothing more than two stupid sheltered kids going on a powertrip.

Heh, like you are some kind of adult, now

Hush, sane inner voice. The grown ups are thinking now.

Pfft, fine. Just don't forget, you've got a civilian hanging aimlessly on a roof.

...! Mentally kicking himself that he had almost forgotten the employer, Net Fly talked to the other two heroes "While you make these guys talk, I'll go check on the civilian I led away earlier. He'd probably want to know that the store and his coworker are safe. I'll be back in a few seconds." Net Fly hovered for a bit, before stopping mid-air. Turning back, he faced Osprey and Foreshadow. "Oh, and before I forget, the name's Net Fly. It's a pleasure."

Foreshadow's attention remained mostly focused on making sure the would be robber remained breathing.  But he kept attentive enough to add his input to the conversation. "Alright sounds good, tell him sorry about the condition we left his store in.  I'm sure these guys will find a way to pay off the lost merchandise and other potential losses after they get out of their eventual cells.  Right?"  The last part of his statement was towards the snivelling criminal by the door lying near the new head shaped protrusion on its frame.  The hooded man of course didn't look towards any of the people he was addressing.  His eyes dead set on the formerly deoxygenated man.

"O' course, Foreshadow" Osprey said, nodding to Net Fly as he went, his voice becoming just a little more clipped and taciturn than before "what else would they want?" Truth be told he wasn't entirely comfortable with this, for no reason he could easily define. Oh sure he had threatened people with violence, even flinging one stubborn informant off a building and letting him fall a ways before catching him in his talons, but pressure like this...'We've already won, what's this do for us?'

Putting that feeling aside, Osprey picked up the would-be robber and looked steadily into his eyes, the yellow lenses giving him a thoroughly impassive stare. "Your powers. What from? Talk."

This was more like it!

The scared criminal warily raised his head to answer Osprey.  Wincing at the sight of the man's eyes staring back at him.  "Okay.  Okay.  See, I didn't want to.  Really.  But they said I had to join.  And you don't get a choice when they recruit, it's not like no is really an option.  They said it would help take the edge off.  I didn't know..."  The teen's voice trailed as he looked over at his incapacitated partners in crime.  "It was just supposed to give out a big spark.  The guy was supposed to give up the money and we coulda left.  Why didn't he just give up the money?  No one was supposed to get hurt, no capes.  Oh god.  Oh god.  Is that really going to be me?  I only shot up once really."

The robber started hyperventilating with worry about Net Fly's threat coming to pass.  His mind was racing and a lack of focus aided in his slipping to mention exactly whom provided the essential empowering drugs.  Judging by his matter of fact reference to the gang, Osprey and Foreshadow could reason that the youth had a least some sort of ongoing familiarity with the affiliation.  With this robbery being a possible initiation ritual for at least him if not the other two as well.

Meanwhile, Net Fly had made his way up to the elderly attendant without any interruption.  "I called the police!  Thank you, I wouldn't know what I would have done had you not come along.  This was the second robbery this month, and if I lost any more profit me and the wife might not have been able to make our loan payments this month.  Darn 4th street cuckoos."  The elderly man assured Net Fly that he completed the teen hero's earlier request while sharing his woes in a low grumble.  Of course neither the sirens of the ambulance Osprey had called for nor the police in question were audible in the area yet.

Nodding to Foreshadow in acknowledgment, Net Fly turned and flew towards the rooftop, where he had left the civilian. Seeing the elderly man give Net Fly such a warm and urgent welcome startled Serge for a moment, but he quickly recovered, and he nodded in appreciation, while holding his hands in front of him. "Please, you don't have to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help." he said, with a slight embarassment in his tone. "Now, we've got the thieves that attacked you rounded up and secure. Would you like me to give you a lift back on the street, while we're waiting for the police to arrive? Or would you rathe-Wait..." Net Fly came to a sudden stop, as something appeared to occur to him "4th street cuckoos?..." he asked the ederly man, his right eyebrow slightly perching up.

The Elderly attendant nodded his enthusiastically once again.  "These whippersnappers.  They were hot stuff in the eighties.  Fizzled out in the nineties.  And have spent the last few years holed up near Kissinger having been drove out of their old haunts in Lincoln.  Everyone who's lived in the neighborhood long enough has heard of them upstarts.  Bunch a nobodies, who wished they still a had a shot of king of the mountain.  Suddenly they start shooting lightning or throwing cars and they think they're hot stuff.  Humph.  If I didn't need to take my medication.  I woulda caned them myself youngster.  Wasn't scared or nothin' my chest was just heavy."  With his bearings now recovered the geriatric man obviously wanted to save face on his less than macho display.  Even if he had made the right choice, he wanted to look brave in front of the young hero.

And you don't get a choice when they recruit, it's not like no is really an option.

'Wait, is this some kind of...'

I only shot up once really.

'...of course. This is the source, right here. These blokes must be some kind of test subjects...or something, nobody would just throw away stuff like that'

Outside of his own mind Osprey didn't give much evidence of what he thought about the young man's desperate confession, though his grip did relax. A little. He had to give the fellow something to work with. "So. 'They' said you had to join. And you decided not to tell the police about this? I see. I can understand why that would seem like a good idea. Little secret: it wasn't." He had sudden slammed his head forward into the others', stopping just in time so the two were eyeball to eyeball as he grated the last two words. Moving back and releasing the teenager, he turned to Foreshadow "So. Many people here with powers-making drugs?"

Net Fly was thankful for his mask, as it helped him keep his smile to himself. Regardless, whether this was mere bravado or the old man really could take those hoodlums on his own, the masked hero was thankful that he was able to help before anybody got hurt. Truth be told, he was thankful for the other two heroes as well, Osprey and Foreshadow. Huh... Have to remember to check up on their backgrounds, see if they're on the ball, when I get the time. I doubt they were lying, but it always pays to play it safe... "Nevertheless." Net Fly said, a bit louder than he intended, as if trying to grab his own attention from his thoughts, more than anything. "Whatever made them fly sparks all of a sudden is probably bad news for everyone. Your information has at the very least pointed us a direction to start looking, rather than this whole blind flailing and searching thing we've had going on until now." At least, that was the deal with me, anyways...

"In any case, let's get you down, and see what the other two heroes have come up with, shall we?" Net Fly grabbed the old man, and hovered back towards the street "Don't worry sir, I'll make sure the ride back will be smooth." He tried to asuage the man.

Landing near the station, he walked to the heroes and said "Well, the civilian is up and kickin', so that's one less concern for us. Any progress here?"

"I've heard that someone was pushing more.  Drug circulation being higher than usual.  But I hadn't actually heard of someone pushing an entirely new compound.  It makes sense if one considers the most convenient way to make a foothold in the trade would be to offer a new product.  Of course something like MAX and ZOOM will always have their followings and easy to find makers.  But a lot of the thrill-junkies always need a new fix.  Unfortunately, it's not a new market by any means.  There's a lot of suppliers out there not all of them are even human."  Foreshadow responded to Osprey before turning to acknowledge Net Fly's return.

"Well our pal here was talkative alright.  Told us how he was supposedly forced to join a gang that shot him up with some stuff.  Tonight was initiation night. "

While the heroes were exchanging information the sound of both police sirens and the ambulance tone rang overhead.  With the ambulance being the first to arrive on the scene.  Foreshadow quickly exchanged information on the gang member's vitals and the situation at hand with the first responders.  Who went on to take their own measurements with actual equipment.  Once they had their patient loaded up they were accompanied by a police escort on their way to the hospital.  Medical distress or not the guy was going.

Two officers entered the shop and thanked the trio for their assistance before apprehending the unconscious robber.  When they came back for the last robber he immediately pressed his hands together and began pleading for leniency to the officers behind Osprey.  "Wai-wait.  Please let me go.  I don't want to go to jail.  Please.  I can work of the damage or something.  Please."

The beat cops looked at each unsympathetically before asking Osprey to move aside so that they could haul the kid off. While the officers were waiting an attractive but stern looking latina woman wearing gray dress slacks and a blue buttoned down blouse walked into the shop. The vintage brown leather jacket covering her blouse left enough room for the badge clipped on belt to become visible to those who turned to look at her. Foreshadow knew the woman as Detective Valerie Archer. Net Fly knew an FCPD badge when he saw one and the regulation clothing filled in enough of the blanks. Osprey's instincts fell on the side of his more avian nature. For whatever reason her very presence made the hairs on the back of his head stand. Something unnatural.

Reaching out for a pen and paper the detective would begin to press the heroes for their recollections of the events. "Alright, it all looks pretty cut and dry. But could you run through what happened so we can have the statements on record."

"Hmmm... Is that so?" Net Fly inquired, as soon as Foreshadow informed him of the initiation. "That gang, it wouldn't be the 4th street cuckoos, would it?" he asked, and proceeded to share the information he got about the gang from the elder attendant. "I mean, after laying basically dormant for so many years, I doubt they suddenly amassed enough clout and brains to pull... whatever this is. Probably middle-to-low end peons. Still, it could be worth a look, we might get lucky and work up a trail from there."

As he was discussing this with Osprey and Foreshadow, the police arrived, and they were quick to putting a proper sort on the mess the gas station had turned. At least, the human elements of the mess. "Most certainly officer, I'll be happy to oblige." Net Fly responded. "I'm called Net Fly. Word on the street is that some weird new superpower-granting drug has been making rounds around these parts of Freedom, and I decided I should spend some more time here, being on the lookout for any funny business I might stumble upon. And funny business did I find, when I saw one of these crooks shooting lightning out of his fingers, while making general threats at the gas station attendants. Anyways, to keep this short and to the point, I flew down here to give them a proper thrashing, only to find that I had backup from these two gentlemen here. We rescued the employees, took them out of harm's way, then kept the pressure on the three criminals up. One of them hit his head on my fists, the other one apparently had a drug-induced heart failure, and the third one broke down like a boy crying for his mama, if you'll excuse the expression... well, mothers, plurar, it would appear, if my memory doesn't fail me..." Net Fly seemed to have flown on a tagent, as he was wont to do from time to time. Thankfully, it didn't take him long to realise that.

"And that's the gist of it."

Osprey politely bowed to the officers' demands,  silently ducking away and collecting the few weapons he'd used during the battle. Leaving as little of a trail as possible, at least materially, was something he had realized was going to be paramount in the coming year.

It gave him time to think about this strange feeling he was getting from the woman in charge, too. Alden was normally a practical man with little interest or concern for the occult or uncanny as anything but something that science would explain someday, but that didn't make it any easier for him to shake the strong, unnerving sense that something followed in this detective's shadow. 'It's like death's hovering right beside her' he thought as he rejoined the others 'same feeling as when you see a vulture circling above you.' Nonetheless, he gave the woman a quick smile and spoke in the same calm, level tone as before "Osprey. I was in the area, heard breaking glass, caught sight of those three blokes menacing the pump employees, went to intervene. The fellows didn't have much fighting experience, it was easy to stop them." Glancing over at the young mutant beside him he added "What Net Fly said is accurate. If it helps, the boy you just took away said it was one dose of whatever it was, and the effect was a lot more than advertised. Might be someone's testing a new batch."

As he spoke he kept his cape over his arms, and stood just far enough away from the detective. 'Not like anything's going to happen, but...well, I don't want be caught that off guard if it does!'

"Not to complain detective.  But gas station robbery doesn't exactly strike me as the sort of thing to call someone from Major Crimes in."  Foreshadow openly observed.  Adding his input to the situation.  "Just like Net Fly, I was following leads on the drug trade rumor mill when I came across the crime in progress.  We all just happened to end up in the right place at the right time.  And I'm sure you've heard enough of the rest of the details by now.  Bandits get beat, and the big guy suddenly couldn't breathe any more. And crying for his mom, or two moms. I think he might have meant one mom difference of diction and all."

His attention then turned from detective Archer to Net Fly and Osprey.  "You said something about the 4th Street Cuckoos?  Seeing as we're practically wrapped up here, it sounds as good of an invitation to pay them a visit as any.  Might as well keep working together on this one if we're going to all be chasing the same breadcrumbs anyways."

"People always assume the FCPD is behind on information. Those people are often wrong.  You aren't the only ones following the rumors floating through the city.  As for the Heart failure and lightning mentioned?  That drug in particular would be Volt.  Coroner said the overdose is not technically cardiovascular.  The synapses firing off in the brain are fooled into thinking you're not breathing.  Or that you are when you're not.  I'm spotty on the medical portion past drugs are bad."  The detective stopped to add what was being said to her note pad.

Detective Archer failed to explain at what point a coroner's report had been come her way during the course of her investigation.  But they were all intelligent enough to pierce together that the robber hauled off to the hospital was not the first person to have a bad reaction to the substance.   The uniformed officers wasted little time in taking the sobbing criminal with them.

"Volt isn't the only thing out there at the moment.  If Mr. Osprey is correct that these are just the test batch, then I want to say even the bangers might not know the full long term effects.  Personally, I wouldn't take one of these kids at their word when they say they only used one dose. But lucky me, I get to have my own conversation with two of them back at the station." The detective was comfortable enough dealing with people wearing masks on their face to carry on the conversation with the assumption they'd pursue things any which way.

"Yeesh. Tough break, detective..." Net Fly remarked sympathetically. "Here's hoping that your interrogation goes smoothly, at least. As for us, we'll make sure to keep in touch with you, let you know if we find anything of use with post haste."

When Foreshadow addressed him and Osprey, Net Fly nodded his head in agreement. "Yes, we might as well. Osprey and Foreshadow, correct? It was an honour working with the two of you fine fellows, and I hope that we can get along well for the remainder of this investigation." he commented, extending his hand at the two heroes.

Turning around, Net Fly ran a brief check on his suit, making sure that it was operational. It'd been one of superhero life's hard lessons, that even the most advanced equipment could be prone to failure at the most inoportune moments, and the last thing he needed right now was to go into a den of lions, or most likely, hyenas, and suffer from a power suit malfunction. After the brief check up, he pressed a button on his mask, near his ear, activating his vibro-suit's fitted Net-Dive, a system he used to remotely hack into computational equipment. "Before we go, though, lemme check the internet real quick, see if I can find any further information about our friendly neighbourhood gang."

'Well, it would be pretty bad if the city's law enforcement didn't know about the latest criminal trends,' Alden thought to himself 'especially given how...explosive some of them can get'. He nodded slightly to the detective in a minute gesture of understanding, wondering uneasily if the strange sensation of a ghostly presence was just the result of spending so long in a place as simultaneously peaceful and crime-stricken as Freedom City, and frequently coming face-to-face with the deaths that(he'd heard) often resulted from the mix. He struggled not to roll his eyes 'In fact, maybe it's all just an overactive imagination...no, doesn't change. Something's off, won't learn what around her'

He chimed in after Archer's last weary words "I'd ask if we could tag along...but I'm not the one to do that. New to the town." With that said he kept quiet, though he did glance at Net Fly in surprise when the young man casually mentioned searching the internet and tapped something on his suit. Alden knew that incredibly small and light devices could access the wireless internet these days, but it honestly had not occurred to him that such light-weight outfit could do that reliably. 'I am, perhaps, not so well-versed in tech as I ought to be. Need to brush up there. Not going to let Synapse be the sole word on that subject.'

"Lead on" he added placidly "we'll give those drug-running birds a nasty surprise..."

Foreshadow was actually surprised by Net Fly checking up on info on the gang.  At least through the means the teen hero seemed to be going about it.  Portable access to the internet through the suit somehow was a solid idea.  A sound one worth possibly considering adding to his own repertoire.  Perhaps a tech update is in order, I'm starting to feel as if I'm operating from the stone age with my mass produced refurbished tech.  Plus, he's got that whole shiny thing down.  Well, I'll spend time researching on where to best allocate my funds on such matters later.

Foreshadow scratched the back of his head, knowing the neighborhood where they needed to go.  But unsure of how long Net Fly's internet search would run.  Unless the suit had a keyboard that he was unaware of, Erick had to assume that it was probably not the most expedient process.  Of course he was willing to admit that he had absolutely no idea of what he was talking about when it came to tech that advanced.  "I'm good to go too.  Just got to make sure the eye in the sky over there's ready too."

It took Serge no more than 3 minutes to hack into a nearby available computer, run a few search queries, and filter through the feedback for any useful information he could find. Thankfully enough, once activated, the Net Dive harness that his costume had connected to his head, sent signals directly to his brain that acted as a visual aid, and the sensors in his gloves acted as a virtual input device for the interface that his mind was seeing. This allowed Net Fly to mimic the process of working on an actual computer, but to others, it appeared as if he was hitting invisible keys in the air.

"Well... at least that's something..." he remarked. Making sure to save some backup files from important sources, Net Fly deactivated the Net Dive, and reported to the group. "The Cuckoos were one of the gangs that emerged during the aftermath of the Terminus Invasion, a decade and a half or two ago. They operated on the Basic Lemings Infrastructure Model of Expendability, which naturally didn't work out for them in the long run. Gang wars happened, they got disolved, the end. Or it would be, but now they're back and meaner than ever before, under the leadership of the son of the former leader. Any guns they don't smuggle, they keep to themselves, so even with Volt being out of the equation, these guys are sure to give us lots of trouble."

"... aaaand that's all I found. Supposedly, their base of operations lies on the further East of the Southside, but I couldn't get any solid information about their exact location. The old attendant DID mention Kissinger, though, so I suppose that's as good a place to start looking as any."

907 Kissinger (4th Street Cuckoos Hangout)

Detective Archer almost chuckled at Osprey's question as to whether they could follow along.  Not that her laughter would have been of any more comfort to Alden due to the strange air about her.  The black and blues stayed on the scene long enough to get the gas station attendant statement as well.  The heroes on the other hand proceeded to look for a lead on the gang's whereabouts.  Going on the earlier tip Net Fly got from the elderly attendant mentioning that they habitated Kissinger street nowadays so the trio proceeded to start there.

It took them a good while before they happened upon a run down looking home with a rustic looking gate.  In front of the residence was a couch had three muscular looking males and a woman smoking a cigarette siting on it.  Around the couch there were at about five others of similar build.  With the exception of one brown skinned male wearing a clearly extravagant black pin striped suit, the rest of their clothes looked extremely worn out with various tears and faded out stains.  Some clearly reminiscent of blood.

Most importantly every single person in the group had a cuckoo clock tattooed on the left side of their neck with the big hand pointing towards the four and the smaller hand completely missing.  It wasn't a point of reference for the gang that they knew of, but the slightly red contour to some of their skin told a story of how new the tattoos could possibly be.

'She could've just said "no". Is that so hard for Americans?' Osprey thought with a wry twist of his face. He had waited until he was shrouded in darkness to do that, though.

As they arrived at the meeting place of the gang he had something else to ponder. "Ornate for a gang symbol" he commented aloud, giving a quick nod at the tattoos "Hidden meanin'?  We'll find out in a minute I guess." he chuckled quietly, stepping back as he added "I'll stay in reserve, watch things from the roof. Yell if you need me."

So saying he began to quickly and carefully make his way up the nearby wall, trusting the tech genius lad and Foreshadow wouldn't need much help for this part of the investigation. 'If not, then we are in bad straits. Just a few questions and we can be on our way...' with a last scrabble, he rolled over the lip of the roof and slid noiselessly over the edge watching the law, his goggled eyes glaring down at the scene, crouched like his namesake lying in wait, his cape swathed at his sides.

It was a good thing that the road to Kissinger's was bereft of trouble. The less distractions the heroes would have to face, the sooner they could put an end to this drug-fueled war. Seeing the gang members at the front, Net Fly could only comment "Seesh, someone's got a tough image to uphold."

At Osprey's comment, Net Fly could only shrug. "Hmmm.... Maybe. Well, they ARE the 4th street cuckoos."

"I'll stay in reserve, watch things from the roof. Yell if you need me."

"Got it." Net Fly nodded in understanding, as Osprey took to climbing the building. Turning to Foreshadow, he asked the more experienced hero. "So, what's the gameplan, Foreshadow? We go through the front door, asking questions and bashing heads in if no satisfactory response occurs? Or through the back door, sneaking around, and poking our noses for evidence?"

Link to comment

Foreshadow nodded as Osprey explained his plan to act as lookout.  A perfectly reasonable thing to have someone watching their six.  He did have to take a moment to Ponder Net Fly's question before dissecting their avenues of approach.  "Sneaking's not a bad plan.  But if you don't know what you're going to wind up finding, it could turn into a cluster or worse a waste of time.  Say they all run inside and there's nothing illegal lying around.  It won't be them who gets in trouble after we finish breaking them apart that is.  But there's two of us so splitting up into two avenues could be viable.  Personally, I say we just start things off by talking.  That macho hanging out in front of the building act doesn't exactly scream subtle."

The hooded acrobat's eyes turned towards the direction of the sofa in the distance.  His eyes narrowing ever so slightly as he inspected the occupants in the distance.  Pretty much making a mental note of how many of them there were if it turned out talking would only get them so far.  Which was always a possibility when dealing with the sort of people who thought drug fueled bank robberies were an appropriate course of action for initiating into their ranks.

"Nah, I agree, no need to further split up, at least for the moment." Net Fly said, not having to take long and think about it. "And it's crystal clear that you're spot-on on the subtlety front; these guys are about as subtle as a piano falling straight to your head." And thanks to the super drug, about as strong as one, as well. he added to himself. "Alright, then, let's head on." With that said, Net Fly strolled towards the 4th Street Cuckoos' alleged hideout. Serge noted that he was walking in as carefree way as possible, and wondered if it was a deliberate act of provocation towards the thugs on the front garden on his part. Regardless, as he came into their view, he said "Hey, watchup, fellas? Awfully damp tonight, isn't it?" With the small pleasantries out of the way, he decided to cut a bit further into the chase. "Anyways, the name's Net Fly. My friend Foreshadow here and I came to ask you guys a few questions. Hope you don't mind." Net Fly spoke in a relaxed manner, but he made sure to keep a good eye on all of the residents.

Osprey had a perfect view of the discussion below from his vantage point.  Completely unseen by any of the gang members below.  The protection of such distance did nothing to aid in actually hearing what was going on.

The three thugs on the couch looked at one another before pausing for a moment.  Looking at the heroes standing before them with smug expressions they'd break into a fit of laughter.  The male directly left to the suit wearing gang member pursed his lips for a moment before waving Net Fly and Foreshadow closer.  "Che. We'd love to facilitate some assistance.  But see, I don't think we got anything we want to talk about with you cape types.  Nah mean?"  Raising his jaw line in a smug fashion.

The woman on the opposite side of the suit wearing fellow flicked her cigarette away.  Making no motion to put it out as it landed on the nearby concrete.  Rolling her eyes before joining in on the conversation.  "Manuel be nice.  You know your mom ain't raise you like that.  Rico, go now.  What d'you need to know?"  The man in the suit shrugged his shoulders before pulling out his cell phone.  Seemingly content to not involve himself in the discussion.  The last member originally sitting on the couch moved to stand before heading towards the home.  Without a single explanation past being told to leave.

Foreshadow crouched in front of the coach.  Sitting in a relaxed manner with his legs ready to propel himself at a moment's notice.  His body language was pretty relaxed.  But the narrowing of his eyes towards the ganbganger whom seemed to have a less than amenable attitude hinted that his mood could change.  "Yes, you see tonight you guys are not our problem.  Sure, some of your associates got arrested from robbing a nearby gas station.  One of them a kid who probably had his life changed forever thanks to a new criminal record, another fighting for dear life because I can save the whole drugs are bad after school special talk, oh the last guy probably  has a concussion.  But hey, not judging I'm sure the police will worry about such practices on their own.  But I would love to hear where you guys got the fancy drug Volt was it?"

The wind forced Foreshadow's cape to flutter as he spoke.  Eyeing each one of the members of the 4th Street Cuckoos standing in front of him.  Looking for who would break the first.  It'd be easy to assume the mooks standing around the couch as easy pickings.  And on their own in a dark alleyway that'd be true.  But in the comfort of larger numbers, and a home field element Erick thought the best approach would come from the top of the ladder.  Which likely had to come from the trio in front of him.  The woman who despite welcoming them mysteriously sent someone away with a simple order.  The guy who didn't care enough about the conversation to look up from his phone.  Or the guy who clearly wanted nothing to do with them.  Those were the choices.
