Adrenaline Rush

Recommended Posts

Normally Lucy tended to stay in her dress suit, it helped that the mystical energies that revived her also made the suit indestructible. But for a night out trying to find vampires she thought it would be worth dressing for the occasion. So she had fallen back on what she knew and went for a simple fringed flapper dress and a pair of heels. If she got into a fight they’d be ruined, but for a place like this they’d be perfect. She also went without her sunglasses in this situation her inhuman black eyes marked her out as one of the special few of this city, Freedom City loved its mystery men and that could hopefully play to her advantage.

“Hello there I’m Lucy Harker, I telephoned ahead about a reservation.†She gave her best winning smile.

The Matre' d' leaned back, and the rebounded, giving a magnanimous sweeping bow.

"Well, Madame" he answered "I shall see what I can do! The high Steaks is always proud to have customers of your...calibre!"

He made a few phone calls, at one point hissing venomously down the speaker that there most certainly was a table, and the staff most certainly would accommodate the guest.

"If you will step this way madam..." he said, ushering the couple into the restaurant area.

The High Steaks was pretty upclass. The restaurant was a charmingly lit balcony area over looking a magnificent gambling level, with a glass ceiling that allowed a crystal clear view of a starry night sky. Aside from a roulette table (which was alive with excitement), many croupiers busied themselves around card tables.

"Complementary champagne may I?" spluttered the Matre' D', falling over himself to serve Revenant. Without waiting for an answer, he poured two glasses of exceptionally fine bubbly for Wessex and Revenant.

Lucy happily accepted the Champaign with a broad smile at the Matre’ d. It didn’t have any effect on her, and she didn’t really taste the alcohol, but it helped to maintain her cover.

“Try not to enjoy the Champaign to much Doctor; I need you to keep a clear head in case trouble starts. And don’t worry about the cost of the meal, I have money stashed away. It’s one of the advantages of not having to normally eat or drink. Unless you want to go Dutch, I’m a modern 20th Century girl…â€

It wouldn’t be that easy but she scanned the room looking for someone who fitted the man description of this Vampire, despite herself of cause.

Wessex started on the champagne quickly, and Revenant's suggestion to slow down had a limited effect. The man was all nerves.

"So...what's going on...do you see anything?" he asked, nibbling on the pate that had been served as a starter. Good pate, too.

"Do you have any, you know, uncanny sense or anything being de...being er...differently alive?" he stumbled over his words, sweating profusely, his brow all sweat and tension.

"Gambling looks fun" he commented, his eyes peeled on the card tables "Do you play? I'm feeling lucky tonight...lets go play...oh God I'm exited...." he said, gripping the bannister over the casino with sweaty palms.

Lucy had a sudden revelation. She didn’t have any idea how many people in this establishment was involved in the vampire plan. And the doctors strange burst of energy suggested that something had already affected him. The best bet was the Champagne, though she couldn’t be absolutely certain. Her first instinct was to get the good doctor out of there, but that wouldn’t solve anything and he was probably safer in her company. Especially if he was marked as a target.

They knew who she was so the dumb flapper act was right out, but the Doctors actions would be a good enough cover for her investigations. She gently took the glass from his hand, no need to overdo it and if she was luckily she could get this tested later.

“I’ve never been a gambler, but who knows tonight might be our luckily night.â€

“I’ve never been a gambler, but who knows tonight might be our luckily night.â€

Wessex barely seemed to notice as he strutted forth to the Roulette table. He was sweating more profusely, and his hands were shaking.

He gazed, almost mesmerised by the rotating wheel and the bouncing ball.

"I've never been a gambler either, but its time to party!" he yelled, punching his fist in the air.

He slammed a hefty pile of notes from his wallet onto the table, which were quickly brushed aside and turned to chips.

"All on black!" he yelled excitedly, shuffling his entire mound of chips onto that very bet.

With glazed eyes he looked on as the wheel spun once more, his hands gripping the table with feverish intensity.

Lucy had a tricky job, protecting the good Doctor from going too far in his diminished state. But she also had to keep an eye out for who was behind this whole place. She subtly took a large chunk of the chips backs.

“And we’ll have a few more hours of gambling fun if we go a little easier on the chips. We don’t want all this fun to end to early do we?â€

She also put her hand gently on his own, hoping that it would produce a calming influence. At the least he should react to her cold touch. All the while she scanned the room trying to pick out anyone who could be behind this plan.

Wessex nodded, vaguely acknowledging the presence of Revenant as his eyes followed the ball round..and round...

"Red!" called the Croupier, as Wessex gripped the table further and gawped at the result.

"Noooo!" he yelled, beating his fists against the table.

He turned to Revenant, grabbing her by the lapels with sweaty palms. Even his eyes looked slightly bloodshot.

"Give me some money! I need to win it back! I need to!" he said, full of desperation.

Relaxing on some chairs on the balcony above, Revenant spied two figures watching Wessex intently. They were a man and a woman, both tall, thin, and pale, with jet black sunglasses on and slicked back hair in an androgynous manner.

There was one advantage to not assuming a secret identity, she didn’t have to hold back one using any of her abilities in public. She grabbed Wessex as gently as she could and hefted him into the air, holding him effortlessly at arms length.

“Don't worry we’ve still got some of the chips left over, but first I think we should both go get some air.â€

Without waiting for Dr Wessex’s obvious protests she began to make her way up towards the balcony and onwards towards the observation deck. A path that would just happen to take them pass the strange figures she’d spotted a few minutes ago.

"Whoooa! What...Hey! Put me down!" yelled Wessex as he was yoinked skywards.

"I need to...play! what are you doing! help!" he wailed, thrashing around with surprising strength, but helpless against the strength or Revenant.

The place automatically cleared an area around the pair, with nervous looks and frightened gazes. The security guards stiffened, unsure how to react to a possible abduction by presumed super-powered figure.

The two pale figures looked at each other as Revenant marched up to the observation deck, equally unsure how to react. They were torn between their mark, the writhing Wessex, and the growing realisation that they themselves had been marked...

Lucy gave a friendly little smile to security, hoping to reassure them that she wasn’t here to cause trouble. Well not for them anyhow but she didn’t want to start trouble. Probably best to try and throw them off guard before they could react. She waited until she was the close to pair and act before they could bolt.

“You’re right, here we go.†She placed him in front of the pair and turned to the man “Could you keep an eye on my friend for a minute, he’s drank something that disagreed with him.†She leant in close to the woman and whispered in her ear “I couldn’t help but notice you watching us...†she put on her best seductive voice.

Meanwhile, at the High Steaks Security Station...

Fat Joe was neither fat, nor Joe. But everybody called him that as a joke. He was as tall and thin as a rake and had never quite got rid of his Italian accent.

He was a pretty good security guard. High on caffeine, his eagle eyes never missed a trick.

"Camera 3!" he pointed, showing his comrades a black and white picture of Revenant carrying a writhing doctor in his arms.

"Who is that? some kind of super? isn't that one of our customers? play back the thread...call the cops...Maybe one of our guests got a little high on Max..."

Back at the balcony...

The two figures looked at Wessex with slavering tounges, gripping their clothes tightly, fighting the smell of him. Neither replied at first, mesmerised by Wessex, who straightened up, full of sweat, and starting clambering of Revenant to get back to the tables.

"He isn't quite cooked...but..." started the slender woman, before reaching over to grab the poor doctor...

"Stop right there Ma'am!" came the call, as two dark suited security guards armed with tasers marched towards them. But they were addressing Revenant!!!

So all she had to do was keep Doctor Wessex safe, stop the two from harming anyone else and make sure none of the security got hurt. So no challenge there then.

First Doctor Wessex. She made sure to step between him and the creature threating him, and then held up one of the chips she’d rescued from him stash.

“I’m sorry doctor I was wrong, why don’t you take these and have another go on the tables.â€

She dropped the remaining chips into his hand, then raised them up in the air to talk with the security.

“I’m afraid there has been something of a misunderstanding. Could I just have a minute with my friends before I leave?â€

Dr. Wessex scampered back to the tables in an almost simian style, sweat pouring off him and arteries beating a rapid tempo.

"Hurrah! What an evening! Now to win my money back! Gosh this is exciting!"

“I’m afraid there has been something of a misunderstanding. Could I just have a minute with my friends before I leave?â€

"Uh huh Miss...you can explain that to the cops. We just saw you pick up one of our patrons and carry him from the tables. That's assault that is...umm...aggravated assault...yeah...or something like that. Anyway's it's not right. We got our patrons to consider, and we don't like them being taken away from the table. "

The two vampires seemed quite amused at Revenant's interaction with security.

"Don't mind us" the man whispered to us.

"We'll just ripen up the good Doctor for the master...."

Lucy gave her friendliest smiles at the guards. She was mildly irked, but mostly because they were putting themselves into danger.

“I’ll be happy to help clear up this misunderstanding. I just need to clear something up with my friends.â€

As she turned to the two vampires her smile failed, a stern no business face of someone who meant business. She kept her voice down so security couldn't hear, hoping that there confusion would buy her some time.

“So how does this work? The Doctor is under my protection, and this operation stops now! I’m sure you both want a chance to take me down, prove yourself the better in the eyes of your Master…â€

“So how does this work? The Doctor is under my protection, and this operation stops now! I’m sure you both want a chance to take me down, prove yourself the better in the eyes of your Master…â€

The two vampires - or whatever they where (with the Master's experimentation one could never be quite sure) - looked at the Doctor with pure hunger.

"He runs this operation very well...we have no interest in you, or taking you down..."

"He prepares the most marvellous meats...can you not smell him, prepared and induced, full of life, brimming with life...all the things we have forgotten..."

"The morsel is our salvation..."

"Such agony, to distil his essence and not feast..." mumbled the female, gripping the bannister overlooking the casino as she eyed the Doctor with a steely gaze.

"Come with us miss!" said one of the two security guards, as two hands gripped either of Revenants arm in a firm but not aggressive manner. There was a guard on either side of her now, each holding a taser in case of trouble.

Lucy set her face into a look of grim determination, well if that was there game so be it. She carefully and deliberately spelt out her own address to the guards around her.

“I’m sorry about all this; I really didn’t want to cause any trouble. Please bill me for any damages, though I suspect I know the owner.â€

This would take careful timing she would have to ignore the Guards assaults if she wanted to get the two vampires by surprise. But she didn’t want any of them to get hurt; they were just doing their job after all. She simply forced her arms forwards, hopefully pulling down the two guards holder her.

“Please don’t try shooting me with those.†She gestured to the Tasers “They don’t have any effect on me, and someone might get hurt.â€

It all happened at once...

The two security officers, not the brightest sparks in the world, decided to test out Revenants theory. The tasers smacked into her dead flesh without effect as Revenants irresistable strength pulled them forward.

A distant alarm sounded, a hue and cry.

The two vampires vaulted over the bannister, landing below on the gambling level, with uncanny agility and without visible hurt from the fall. Almost silently, they flew towards the engrossed Dr. Wessex, who was gleefully rolling some dice at the craps table...

Lucy gave the guards a disappointed little look, not that she could blame them for trying. The vampire actions were much more unexpected, and made thing much safer for everyone involved. Turning away from the guards she quickly brushed away the cables from the Tasers, a small grin on her face.

The she vaulted over the balcony, allowing gravity to do all the work for her. Her aim was true and she crashed through the Craps table at the last minute striking the sending shock waves through the floor.

“I’m afraid this table is closed.â€

The whole floor of the High Steaks trembled from the impact, with drinks, food, and most noticeably, gambling chips flying through the air and raining down in a cascade. The shockwave was enough to throw people into the air and onto their rear, Wessex included. He landed flat on his behind, still holding his vodka martini cocktail glass, into which a golden chip fell with an elegant splosh, much to his delight.

The woman vampire got up and made towards Wessex, who was still sweating and oblivious, revelling in the action. Her male counterpart got up and spun on his heel, thrashing a backhanded fist at Revenant...

Whatever they had done to the Doctor obviously made him a target to the two if she they could make it out of this place she hopefully would be able to work out how it was all done. As she watched the two Vampire, working out her next possible attack, she moved around so she could block any attack on Wessex.

Then when the opportunity arose she lashed out an arm in the direction of the vampire currently attacking her, unless she concentrated she difficulty telling the two apart.

“Sorry the bar is closed right now, if you’d like to make your way outside.“

Revenant's strength was more than enough to rip apart the vampire, or, with her iron arm, decapitate him. Today, however, she held back slightly, merely crushing the vampires ribcage and spine with a bone-jarring fist.

"Ghraaack....." coughed the vampire, blood hitting the floor from his mouth as he collapsed onto the floor in a heap. His injuries would have killed a mortal instantly, but somehow he remained on the floor, looking up at Revenant in surprise and fear, his broken body bent in an impossible position.

"What are you?" he croaked, spitting blood from his pale lips.

The woman took a lingering hungry look at Wessex, but turned, running at an olympian pace to the windows of the High Towers, crashing through them, sending g lass and cold night air spinning into the Restaurant as she fell to the floor.

Lucy crouched down beside her former foe.

“Luckily for you I’m not our father’s daughter.†She resisted the urge to drag him toward her “Tell me what the Master’s plan is and I let you go free, though you’ll never be able to return to this place.†She looked behind her, the Guards would soon recover and want to talk with her “My time and my patience is short, so I suggest you talk quickly.â€

Whilst he was making up his mind she scanned around for Doctor Wessex to make sure he was still okay, hopefully all this action had burned away some of his chemically induced mania.

The pale creature in front of her, body broken, twisted in a position only possible for a corpse, looked up a Revenant.

"The Master...he is creating...veal..." he smiled coldly "...stuffing...he primes mortals with excitement, the essence of life...and then he distills them...creating an elixir ripe with life, beyond the sweetest blood you have ever tasted...the blood of Gods and Kings!" he said, feverishly.

"The Master, he is like us, dead...like you...but he seeks to become something greater. He is cold, he knows he is missing something for all his centuries and power. He wants life, that is what he has been seeking. That is why he created his daughters, and why he constantly experiments. He seeks to become something beyond life or death, with the heart of one, and the strength of the other!"

Lucy face set into a grim visage. She probably knew more about his, and her, Master than he thought, but there was still something she didn’t know. She suspected he wasn’t about to tell her, and she really didn’t have the time.

“Oh I know all about the Master and his little experiments. I promised him I’d stop them if I found them.†standing up she casually brushes herself down “This experiment is now officially closed. You can tell me where to find him, or I’ll just leave you her for the FCPD. I’ve heard they’ve got equipment to deal with your kind.â€
