Fear crept into the vampires eyes for the first perceptible time.

"No! I'll tell you everything you want! But I will not face the death eternal! Save me! I need blood! I will not die!"

He licked his lips looking at Wessex, who was observing with jaw wide, pupils dilated, and sweat dripping off his body.

His eyes peeled like darting lizards to the left, where some security guards were entering, fighting there way through, and trying to control the many panicked patrons of the High Steaks who were voting with their feet.

"His blood! He is potent now! I need his blood!"

Lucy looked up Doctor Wessex “Well what do you say Doctor? Despite what you’ve heard vampire aren’t eternally stagnant unchanging creatures. There Master has gone too far the other way becoming a cold uncaring thing. But I think this one deserves a chance to change. If he goes back to his old way’s I’ll make sure he’s hunted down and if necessary destroyed.â€

She looked around and picked up a wine glass still intact after her impact. And held it up to the doctor.

“I’m not suggesting you give him your arm, he’d probably couldn't keep his control. But a glass full of blood shouldn’t do you any harm.â€

Wessex went almost white in fear.

"Well...I...ah...um...sure, I guess...." he said hesitantly. "After all, I can always get a transfusion at hospital...."

"Errr....this is going to hurt...." he whimpered. Perhaps on another day he would have balked at the task, but he was high on cocktail that the Master had prepared for him. Without trepidation once his decision was made, he took a steak knife and a wine glass, and did the deed. The cut was not deep, but sufficient...blood dripped into the glass, which he dutifully handed over, before tying a napkin to the wound.

As he was handing over the glass to Revenant, the vampire strained against her grip, unable to contain himself in the presence of some nectar.

"Halt right there! Hands up!"

They were interrupted by the call of a SWAT officer, a team of six men, all ready for action and armed to the teeth.

Not panicking she carefully passed the glass to the vampire. As far as the police could tell she was just passing a real dark glass of wine to someone in shock. Without hesitation she thrust the glass into the vampire hands. She then stood up and over the vampire so she could keep an eye on both the vampire and the police officers. She had enough experience with vampire to know a thirsty one could be an unpredictable thing.

She raised her hand and gave the officers a friendly smile, she didn’t want to start trouble and they were just doing their jobs.

“Hello there officers, I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding. I happy to sort this all out without resorting to violence.â€

She didn’t dare look around, in case a trigger happy officer got the wrong idea, but she hoped Dr Wessex was smart enough to have gotten out of the way.

"What?" replied the confused captain of the SWAT team.

"Stand back ma'am!" he said, reasserting his authority.

"Medic! we have two civillian's down!" he blurted catching a better angle at the shenanigans.

"One civvie has...errr...cut his own wrists? ummm....and the other..." he looked at the broken vampire who had contorted into a shape quite incompatible with life "...errr....we are going to need serious trauma services...."

He raised his eyebrow as Revenant passed the vampire some "wine"...

"I think he needs more than a claret..." he mumbled, quite confused with the whole situation, as the Vampire's body began to rumble, cracking, creaking, and rebuilding itself...

Lucy really didn’t like lying to the police or medical professionals, it had been a bit of a weakness as a lawyer but somehow she’d managed. But at the moment it was probably for the best, she just hoped the trust she placed in this Vampire would pay off.

“He has healing abilities, he just needs the liquid to help the process.†Which was to a point the truth. She gently guided the Paramedic away from the vampire before they checked for life signs “He’ll be fine trust me.â€

She walked over to the SWAT leader, still keeping an eye of the vampire.

“I’m terribly sorry about all this; it was just a bit of a misunderstanding. Is there anything I can do to clear this all up?â€

The SWAT captain pulled up his flash goggles and rubbed his eyes.

"I guess...yeah, I guess you can explain what the hell is going on?" he answered. His tone was frustrated but not confrontational.

"This is all super-powered stuff, isn't it? healing mutants and the like?" he speculated, asking her in a tone that implied he really wanted to hear an answer he could put down on his report.

"Who are you anyway? I don't always keep up with the briefs and everything..." he asked, staring at Revenant closely.

"Pale girl?"

Behind them, the vampire started bending back into a more normal shape...

One of first thing’s Lucy had learnt about dealing with people was when lying it was best to use as much of the truth as you could. She didn’t lie often, not since she was a young tearaway, but she was unfortunately quite good.

“There was something amiss at this place and my friend’s here.†She gesture to the Doctor and the Vampire “Were helping me find out the truth. They were in danger and I didn’t have time to warn the security here about what I was doing.†She turned toward the security “Sorry about that.â€

Now the easier part, pouring on the charm. She gave the Police and large warm smile.

“There still out there, and I really need to track them down. So if you wouldn’t mind?â€

The captain rubbed his eyes, but clearly it had been a long day and he wanted to tie this up with the minimum of paperwork.

"Yeah...well....thanks for your help then!" he concluded, nodding to his squad. "This place looks secure now. Nobody injured..." he muttered, giving a suspicious look at the regenerated vampire.

"We can go, guys...just remember to be careful and call the police if there is any further disturbance!" he added, wandering off to have a word with the High Steaks security and management.

"You'll never get away with it!" hissed the vampire, his beady eyes looking left and right for exit points, but held discretely in an iron grip by Revenant.

"The Master will hunt you down! nothing will stop him! His adrenaline cocktail will make him more powerful than ever!" he explained, licking his lips with the last sweet drops of Wessex' blood.

Lucy smile didn’t waver but after making sure the Police were out of earshot her look hardened just a tiny bit.

“That no way to talk to someone who just saved your non-life. And why don’t we go pay the Master a visit, and you can explain how the pair of you ruined this plan?â€

She turned to Doctor Wessex with a look now one of concern

“This Master he’s as bad as he sounds, he’s an Elder Vampire more power and defiantly more Intelligent than this one here. I’m not afraid to say that he’s managed to outsmart me numerous times. You’re out of your depth here, hell I’m probably am to but we’re connected in way’s I can’t begin to describe. Let me escort you home and I promise I’ll stop whatever they’ve been planning.â€

Wessex gulped deeply.

"Al...alright...I don't feel so good anyway...heart bounding...sweaty...anxious...say, are more pupils dilated?" he asked Revenant, staring at her eyes with his own wide black pupils.

"Adrenaline...or something like it, I should think...must make my blood more potent, in some way. Blah, I never thought I would be dealing with vampires in my line of work..." he gabbled on, still flush from whatever the vampires had spiked him with.

"If you can get me out of here alive...err...no offence taken...I'd be might appreciative..." he continued, already making a prompt walk for the lift in the High Steaks.

“If it makes you feel any better I never expected to deal with vampire during my life.†As she spoke she lifted the still recovering vampire onto her shoulders “This kind gentleman had agreed to escort us home, what with the streets not being safe for woman to walk at night.†She gave another of her easy smile.

“Well make sure you get home safely, then I plan to find his mate and there master. After all in a way there almost like family. Though there the kind of family you’re embarrassed about and don’t like to talk about.â€

With a sweep of her free hand she gestured for Doctor Wessex to lead.

Later, outside Dr Wessex house...

It hadn't taken long. A street thug had tried his luck late at night. And his luck had failed when he met Revenant. The walk was short - Wessex was marching at double speed, still high on his cocktail of adrenaline drugs.

He paused outside.

"Hey...err..thanks...." he muttered, not meeting Revenant's gaze entirely.

"You know, I'm not sure if its the drugs your...relative...gave me...or its just the whole evening, but it was super exciting. What a night. Makes me all, you know, excited....and...err...what with you being a beautiful woman and everything....errr....well...errrr...."

He paused and scratched the back of the neck, unsure what to say next.

"Leave this snivelling meal..." hissed the vampire in Revenants ear. "Let me drain him...oooh....so delicious....his blood...you really don't know what you are missing....why do you fight it so? why not join your father? he loves you...mmmm....taste him....I can smell him...."

The vampire, whilst crushed, was ooozing lust and desire for the crack cocaine of blood infront of him. Wessex was all he could think about.

Holding the vampire at arm’s length she lent in and gave the good Doctor a kiss on the cheek.

“I’m flattered Doctor but I’m already spoken for, beside you’re not in your right mind. When you get inside close and lock all your windows and door, and don’t answer the door for anyone despite what they say.â€

She stood outside his house until she was happy he’d carried out her order, and then she’d turned her attention to her captive vampire.

“Let’s talk about finding your little vampire girl-friend shall we?â€

Even later...

It would be dawn in a few hours.

The night had been long, but for the tireless undead it mattered not. The vampire caught in Revenants grasp was not keen to "shop" his girlfriend, but he was keen to save his life. The dead were heartless.

Perhaps that was what the Master wanted to rectify.

Where did the creature lead them.

Back to the High Steaks!

"The Master bought the place...gambling...food...a rich source of experimentation! people desperate for money and power, people with nothing less to lose...people on the edge...it is not just bodies he studies, but minds too! hahaha!"

To the vampire, humans were nothing more than petri dish bacteria.

The High Steaks building was shut now. The shattered window boarded up. A lone security guard on the lowest floor. It looked cold and empty. As a gambling venue, it kept going until 3am, but it was past even that now - with even the stragglers having retired.

"He owns the building" sniggered the Vampire, desperate now. "Time for you to let me go?"

She had suspected that the Master would be involved with such an operation directly, especially when she’d discover the extent of his plans. But more importantly she’d had more important thing to worry about, like ensuring Doctor Wessex’s safely and making sure the guard and police didn’t have to tussle with a wounded vampire.

Know him he’d probably be waiting for her, or at least had a surprise planned for her. Of cause the one thing he couldn’t plan for was her ability to improvise, something that he and his kind didn’t seem to process.

“What when we’re getting on so well? You must know how to reach the Master inner sanctum, or at least it’s antechamber. And I’m some keen to see him again.â€

The Vampire looked uneasy.

"I do..." he mumbled, giving her a shifty look. "He has a vault, down in the basement. Its well protected...security guard, vault door, camera's...that's where he has set up his...abode..."

He didn't look to happy about his situation.

"And where he does he...experiments..." he said, licking his tongue.

"I can take you there...but I fear you will rip my dead heart out of my chest when you have no further use for me. Yes, for all your pretence at empathy, you are one of us in spirit. And your dead eyes are like mine. So, tell me, I will not meet my demise at your hands? no..don't tell me, for you can surely lie as well as I. I wish to barter my existence! So before I make myself of no further use, I would have my way away from you!"

Lucy gave a little laugh “You really don’t understand me do you? Or you’ve bought into whatever the master has told you about me.â€

She looked at him with her coal black eyes, like two dark pits, but the rest of her face still showed her humanity.

“On the floor of the High Steak’s up there.†She gestured towards the top of the building “I could have left you to die again, from your wounds or from the Police Officers. And I didn’t need you, your partner was still free and I could have caught her easily. But I risked everything to save you, to give you a chance to change your ways.â€

She gently put the vampire down, freeing him from her grasp.

“But if you really fear him, or me, that much you’re free to go.†Her look darkened and now she did look liked he feared “If I find out you’ve harmed anybody, then I will not hesitate to track you down and end your existence.â€

"It is my nature to harm. To suck the blood dry. You know this...or are you completely immune to the lure of blood? Your sister, Nora, was entranced by it, even if not to the craving intensity of us..."

The Vampire seemed slightly envious for a moment.

"But I cannot promise that I will not harm anybody. I am a vampire, I yearn for the sweetest blood, full of life. Without it, I wither. With it, I thrive. And I am immortal! how long can I impose Iron Will upon craving? a month? a year? no matter, sooner or later I will bleed the living to death, and gorge myself upon the essence of living...unless the Master creates something new...."

"So this promise I cannot keep, and well you know it. But, perhaps you will grant reprieve at least for today...and hunt me down tomorrow. No matter, I cannot ask for more. You are a slave to your nature as much as I, it seems..."

He took Revenant into the High Steaks, coming up to the security guard and producing a pass. Without further ado, the pair took a lift down to the basement...a hidden basement that was accessed by pressing the "G" level three times in quick succession.

"Here we are. The door is a foot of steel. A camera is outside, and the door is controlled from inside. How do you intend to meet your maker? via parley...or by ripping the vault open?"

“There have been vampire who’ve fought there nature’s or found cure’s for the curse. Maybe you should try finding Nora she’s managed to build herself a new life free from his influence.†She waved toward where the Master was waiting “You may not believe this but I hope you do find a way to be a better person.â€

She brushed down her dress, which had surprisingly survived the night encounter, and tried to make sure she looks as good as she could.

“Why I’m just a wayward daughter visiting. So far I fascinate him more than I frustrate him, and he can’t resist testing what I can achieve. She smiled up at the camera; though she still wasn’t use to them she liked to think of them as tiny movie cameras, and knocked politely on the door.â€

The Vampire was not lying. The basement was dominated by a steel vault door, and a security camera. After but a moment, without communication, the vault door opened, almost silently, swinging on perfect hinges to slowly reveal the Masters lair.

It was suitably well furbished, a mixture of old and new. State of the art laboratory equipment mixed with tomes of old books.

The female vampire, dressed in nightwear, leant by the side of the room, her eyes peeled on Revenant and her partner.

In the middle of the room, in a beat up old leather chair was the Master. Ge was tall, maybe six foot, with a slender but strong physique. His eyes and hair were black, on top of a face full of aristocracy, a cruel nose and lips on a handsome face. He wore a smoking jacket and slippers, and was studying one of the dusty tomes that lined the walls.

"Face to face at last" he said in an iron voice, cold and strong. There was trace of a German accent.

"Of course, I we have met before. But I considered it wise to deceive you last time, at least before I had begun to understand you further.

"I am Otto Otswald. For many years now, I have been called the Master. A name appropriate but not craved. I have been dead for over three hundred years, and I grow weary of it..."

It was almost disappointing to finally meet the Master in the flesh. He’d been such a presence in her life for so long, to finally received answers was bit of a let-down.

But she also knew she couldn’t really move on with her life fully until this had been dealt with, her questions answer.

She gently sat down into a chair opposite him, he’d obviously been expecting her.

“I’m Lucy Harker. For a year I’ve called myself Revenant, a name I repurpose from the man that had me killed. I’ve been dead for 85 years, and yet I’ve never felt more alive.†She couldn’t help but give a wry little smile “Now why do think that is?â€

The Masters eyes - just for a fraction of a second darted to the side and a flash of vexation was seen as he furrowed his brow.

"Yes. Interesting, that..."

"I have sought, for many centuries, to regain the passion and vitality of life. There is an emptiness to vampirism. Only the hunger arouses"

He stood up, slowly, puffing on an elaborate pipe.

"I have had some success. I am less bound by the need for blood. But still, I lack the essence. Now, I have even divined a way to bring myself back to life. But, my years of death have stripped away hypocrisy. I chose undeath for the power it gave me, and I have no desire to relinquish it..."

"No, instead I wished to create a compromise. At first, I used sorcery, but to little avail other than a few amusements" he frowned at the thought and emptied his pipe by tapping it into a dish.

"And then, science. And later, with both. And then, I made poor Nora. The first time I had any success, although as you are aware it was not without significant problems. Half mad from her condition..."

"And then there was my stonehearted Lady. Sane, but cold. Perfect, yet without that emotion"

"And inbetween, you. At first I dismissed you as but an experiment necessary for future progress. I see now that I was in error. Your actions to date are at least suggestive of empathy and humanity. And your competence certainly demonstrates strength..."

"But I would have from your own tongue now. Indulge me, if you will. What is it like, to be you?"

“I don’t want to say I told you so, but I did offer to try and help you in the first place.â€

But how to describe her existence since coming back?

“The difference between me and the other is than unlike Stone I feel, passionately but unlike Nora I not controlled by my emotions. When I came back I found that I had lost everything, I miss my family and friends. I still miss them, whilst it’s been 80 years for everyone else it’s still only a year about for me. But you know what I get to see the future, the wonders of this age that we couldn’t have even imagined in my day and age. And you know what I get to see what the future leads.â€

She couldn’t help but give a little smile.

“The world is full of amazing wonders and people and I get a chance to see it all.â€

"Hmmm...spare me the poetry" sighed the Master in a cold breathless voice.

"If I wanted poetry I would have re-animated Byron. And don't think the thought had not occurred to me. Poetry breathing life into the soul? I gave it a shot animating Tennyson. What a bore he was...endless droning on the nature of death. I felt not a thing..."

"No, no, where you can help me is by dying again. Properly. I can extract your essence and investigate it scientifically. In combination with analysis of your brain tissue, it will surely unlock the key to my accidental success!"
