Fly Me to the Moon

Velocity looked down at the ground below them and the abandoned, or supposedly abandoned, base. “How about we start over at the hanger at the end of the runways?†She said, pointing towards that one. “Once I’m on the ground, I can start searching quickly.â€Â

Rose smiled - she loved that song. In her full space suit, she walked to the viewport and stared out at the Earth below her. It was only then that she realised exactly what she was doing, 'I'm in space.' The very idea floored her. When she began the Superhero gig, she imagined helping people - doing her part to be an inspiration to those who needed someone to look to. She didn't realise that it would affect her so much. Looking down on her planet she was overwhelmed with a feeling of unity. When you could see the entirety of the planet, differences didn't seem too large. Rose found herself stifling a rush of emotion she didn't expect. She was also set upon by a great desire to see that that world was protected by those who wanted to destroy it, or claim it as their own. Moreso than ever before, Rose became determined to fulfil her chosen role as protector - as believer.

In seeming response to Rose's new feeling, the controls at the beginning of the plane beeped familiarly - it seemed that they were approaching their destination. She turned away from the Earth, immediately missing the view, and looked toward Emissary, "Ok, so what's the plan?"

As soon as they were on the ground, Velocity sped over to the first hangar and ran a "search lap" around the building while she waited for Raindance to catch up. The building was big, big enough to house two or three 747s. The front of the hangar was outfitted with two gigantic bay doors, each large enough to fit a plane through. The sides of the hangar had several man-sized doors each at the ground level, and the back of the hangar held two doors going in at ground level and one door that was at the top of a set of fire escape style stairs, perhaps 30 feet in the air. In her search, Velocity turned up nothing unusual. There was no sign of life or activity of any kind.

As Raindance approached from the air, he also saw no sign of trouble.

The jet continued to climb higher and higher towards its destination. The position updates that Daedalus kept sending indicated that they were getting closer. Though they couldn't feel it because of the jet's massive thrust, the pull of the Earth's gravity was getting less and less. Very soon they would be in orbit and on their way to their destination.

With a crackle of electricity, Raindance blasted the hangar door at a spot near the ground. The thunderous boom echoed between the hangars as Raindance burned a a sizable hole in the metal. From ground level the two heroes could see inside through the hole. It was dark inside, but the hangar appeared to live up to expectations . . . abandoned.

As the Emissary and Valkyrie flew the final leg of their journey, gravity lost its hold on the jet completely; they were entirely weightless. Before they had a chance to enjoy the feeling another alarm sounded on the jet's console. It was their guidance system. They had reached their destination . . . or at least as close as they dared get. The Emissary studied the jet's various sensors for a few seconds before he discovered their target. There it was about two miles from their current position in a geosynchronous orbit over the east coast: a small space station of some kind.
