The heroes flew closer to the space platform, trying to make out the nature of the movement. The Emissary's keen eyes picked up the details first. The "deck" of the platform was being patrolled, in a monotonous circular patter, by a dozen or so robots. The looked very odd to the Emissary's eyes, almost old-fashioned or archaic . . . if space robots could be such a thing. Within just a few seconds of being watched, four of the robots floated off the deck and began jetting straight at the Emissary and Valkyrie. At their current speed, they would reach the heroes in just a few seconds.

Velocity's search turned up much less than she hoped. The giant box was made of metal (including the ribbon), painted to look Christmasy. As Velocity completed her search lap . . .

"POP!"

. . . another giant Christmas present appeared just behind the first, about 20' away. It was a similar size and color and equally mysterious.

Valkyrie-2.jpg

Rose continues to peer into the darkness. She turns to Emissary as he reacts to something he sees, prompting Rose to look back at their target. That's when she notices the metallic shapes flying toward them, and fast! Ok, she thinks, I'm ready for this! She clenchers her fist, giving a fleeting thought to the hope that her spacesuit holds out.

Velocity jumped slightly at the appearance of a second giant Christmas present as she made a quick check of the first. Moving back over towards Raindance, she shrugged. “I can’t really see much about them. I say blast the first one from a distance, see what happens.â€Â

As the robots continued to close on the heroes, they became more visible. Made of a flat, almost plastic-looking metal with each of their body segments oversized squares, they looked like something out of a 50s sci-fi movie. Each of the bots had something protruding from their back. At first they looked like they might be satellite dishes of some sort. But as they drew closer it was obvious what they were. They were wind-up tabs. These space faring robots were nothing more than giant wind-up toys.

Raindance blasted the nearest box. The heat energy from his controlled lightning began to melt a hole in the box. Before burning completely through the box began to shake . . . and play a little tune. When it reached the last note . . .

BOING!

A giant "jack-in-the-box" popped out of the top of the Christmas present. The clown-thing was painted very festively, complete with giant red and green buttons, but its face was painted into a menacing scowl with fangs. The evil clown body was affixed to a giant spring.

Almost immediately the second box began playing a similar tune.

BOING!

“Okay, I don’t think these are for the nice girls and boys.†Velocity replied as the evil clown jack-in-the-boxes appeared. Running towards the nearest one, she swung at the grinning clown as it bobbed down towards her, but she missed terribly, the odd movements of the clown making it hard to target.

Continuing past the clown, she looped back around to finish back next to Raindance. “Okay, that did not work all that well.â€Â

He manages to look both thoughtful and faintly exasperated as the robots streak over, a soundless sigh at the loss of the element of suprise even as his gaze bears down fully on the windup key.

"What a horrible use to put giant toys to."

He pushed from his mind the idle thoughts of how these robots should clearly instead be amusing children in a city park and veered towards one of the automatons that approached, flipping over it at the last moment end over end in order to send a double fisted smash of his silvered fists towards the key in its back.

The two evil jack-in-the-boxes launched forward on their tethers with surprising speed while the boxes that supported them remained stationary. The springs that connected clown to box stretched an amazing distance. The two clowns collided head first into the two heroes, smashing them with their evil faces. They "toys" were clearly not made of plastic; the blow was like being hit by steel. As the springs sprang the clowns back toward their boxes, thy toys laughed a raspy, mechanical laugh.

Raindance had been caught horribly off guard, worrying too much about Velocity. She had attacked and the clowns had responded in kind even before he could form a coherent thought. He didn't even have time to assume a defensive stance before his attacker slammed into him - luckily his instinct had taken over just in time and he rolled with the blow, sparing himself from what could have been a horrible injury.

Seeing that Velocity had caught the worst of it, he set his jaw in anger and raised his hands. The wind began to swirl around the box nearest to him, and quickly built up to a howling tornado around its base.

The Wind-Up bots took evasive action as soon as the heroes were close enough to strike. The two bots that had headed for Valkyrie broke away into dives at the last minute. She took a swing as they were passing by, but missed. The Emissary, however, had much better luck. He landed a stellar blow to the back of one of the bots, so hard, in fact, that he nearly broke it in half. The bot started spiraling downward, leaving a trail of smoke and debris in its wake.

The three remaining bots struck back. The left hand on each bot retracted back into their oversized wrists, and large gun barrels emerged in their place. Each bot blasted the heroes with surprising accuracy. One hit the Emissary. The other two hit Valkyrie.

Raindance slammed the two evil packages together hard. The boxes crunched in on the damaged side, but the evil clown affixed to their springs seemed unaffected. They sprang at Raindance again, and he only narrowly ducked aside. Their evil, mechanical laughter continued.
