Zoom Plus

Veiled Malice

Recommended Posts

Velocity knew from personal experience Zoom users could go fast. The drug supercharged the metabolism to such a degree that it duplicated her own powers, but to a far lesser extent. That kind of boost did not come without cost, though. Heart damage was chief among the worries of Zoom users, but muscle tears, ligament strains, and massive bone decalcification were longer term worries as well.

As she neared Denton's house, though, she realized one thing was off about Eric's heart attack. When a Zoom user crashed hard, they usually did so in the same hyperactive way they were previously moving. This almost always led to death, as even help rendered immediately would be too slow to do any good. But Eric was literally in slow motion when his attack hit.

But Velocity couldn't worry about that any longer. Denton's house loomed large on the horizon almost before she knew it, smack dab in the middle of one of North Bay's many fenced-in communities. She would have to get in if she wanted to see if Denton was there, but that would mean she'd technically be breaking the law.

Velocity was not sure what to make of the unusual effect the crash off the Zoom had had on Eric. It could be some new version of the drug, but still seemed just as dangerous. Frowning as she looked up at Denton’s home, she ran through her various options.

Might as well start with the easy one first. She thought, as she came to a halt at the front door and rang the doorbell.

After a couple minutes, it became obvious that no one was coming to the door. The LaBreques were rich, but not wealthy enough to have a live-in butler, apparently. With a quick look around, it didn't seem as if any of the lights were on. Either Denton was home and simply not coming to the door, he was home and couldn't come to the door, or was not home at all.

Dang it. Velocity thought as there was no response at the door. Unlike the police, she really could not just bust into the place without a bit more reason to think something might be happening inside. She had no way of being sure that Denton had even made it home at all.

Not quite ready to break the law on this, Velocity pulled out the directory and was off again, this time towards Robert Luciano’s home. She noticed that his name was not crossed out. Hmm, going to be now that he’s a drug using moron.

Velocity zipped over to the next home on her list, but found it in much the same condition as the first. No one home, or no one coming to the door.

She was about to leave and head over to Jackson Sinclair's house when the phone went off inside. The sound carried fairly well despite the storm glass inbetween her and the noise. After a couple rings, the machine picked up. After a dry and uninteresting message telling the caller to leave their name and number, the situation started to get more interesting.

"Man, it's me, Jackson! Oh man, where the hell are you?! Why don't you have your ce-" Velocity could tell the young man on the line was on a cell phone. Wind whistling past the reciever cut out his desperate words for a second, the cut back in with, "-going home! We gotta get out of here now! Give me a call when you-"

This time, wind was not responsible for Jackson's words going away. Then, "oh my god," he said quietly, then yelling, "Oh my god! There're here! They'rehere! Ohmygodohmygodgetawayfromme-"

Velocity knew a doppler shift when she heard one. Jackson was speeding up, his words along with them, and the shorter wavelengths made his words sound higher and closer together. She had to get to Jackson's house now. Whoever "they" were had to have some answers.

As all of Velocity's journey's were, the trip was short. One quick jaunt out of the ultra-high class areas of North Bay and into the suburbs later, she found herself in an area of two story cookie cutter houses and well maintained front yards. The suburban sprawl wiped past at incredible speed as she seached for the right home.

It wasn't long coming. A van had been hastily parked on the side of a street with the unfortunate name of "Pleasant Lane", and two men in black suits and sunglasses were loading a unresisting body into the side.
