Disco Fever [1972]

Recommended Posts

Grimalkin manages to blunt the worst of the fall, though she still has to avoid turning her ankle at the last moment. The robbers are across the road, which appears to be free of cars.

Grim hits the ground a little harder than she thought she would, but still manages to avoid injury as she drops down to a crouch and has a little wind knocked out of her.

"Oof!"

But in a flash she's up and running, quickly looking both ways as she dashes across the street to sucker punch the nearest robber, attempting to rake his back with her claws.

Grimalkin's wild attack doesn't connect as the bandit dodges to one side. She's clearly announced her presence to the other bandits, but they're gradually realizing that they are outnumbered and outgunned. There's not even a scratch on Nanowire from a blow that was dead center, and one of them is knocked out from the energy that the unknown hero used.

One of them fires at that man, but it's only to throw him off-balance so that his friend can get a better shot. It connects, and the hero takes a solid blow.

Nanowire and Grimalkin both get the feeling that something funny is going on, though they can't quite tell what.

Velocity's attack catches the androids off-guard. All of them crash into a rooftop, stunned by the unexpected attack. Two of them try to struggle to their feet (though they haven't stood up yet), but one of them is still down and barely twitching.

The clumsy blast directed at Nanowire's chest deflected off, leaving little more than a smudge. The guns were powerful, more powerful than he thought standard armed robbers would have. The stylings were weird too. All retro - even as a displaced Japanese citizen, he knew that. And the guy in the powered armor laying into the men from the other side - his suit looked far too makeshift to ward off blasts like the ones these guys were throwing around. Nothing seemed to fit.

But that would have to wait until later. The man that had fired on him received the brunt of his attack. Nanowire pulled his punch quite a bit; he had no desire to hurt the guy any more than necessary.

The thief appreciates Nanowire's restraint. While the blow doesn't knock the man out, it does drive him to his knees with an audible "oof". He looks like he couldn't take another blow like that and remain standing.

The iron-suited hero steps up and kicks the gun away from the man, disarming him. The two thieves who are left seem ready to bolt now, as they try to figure out which way to run.

The Furies are worse off than Velocity realized. They're in no condition to stand up, and the most that one of them does is look to see who her attacker was. She can't quite speak yet as she shakes her head.

Seth's reverie is interrupted by the wild swerves of a shiny new Corvette convertible with its classic styling. A hairy apelike man who seems to be wearing nothing but a thong is leaning out of the right side, while a woman who could be a model, dressed in some sort of checkerboard dress, is driving. It doesn't seem like she's driving so poorly on purpose - more like she's not experienced with the car's gearing, and the way that the man is moving back and forth can't help either. Both of them seem to be laughing as they pass by Seth.

Seth, still in his outfit from the (Night before?) felt that the mismatched couple was driving a little two dangerously for his tastes.

His eyelids lower as he concentrates. With invisible hands he lifts the car inches from the ground. Let them spin their wheels a little bit. Then he can see what's going on.

See, this is why she didn't like fair fights: they never seem to go her way. Of course the lack of planning or coordination with her partner-in-not-quite-crime didn't help, either.

One day when I'm big and strong, I'll be able to beat up bad guys just like Nanowire - yay!

There was also some joker playing a game of hide and seek (he was right over there), which she found annoying; being sneaky was only fun when it was her doing it. Keeping Inviso-Guy within her awareness, Grim decides to instead play to her strengths and use her most powerful weapon, her mouth. Allowing her actual frustration to bubble up to the surface, she crosses her arms and does her best to look pissed as she calls out to Nano.

"God, I am so useless today! Why don't you just melt them down to the bone and get this over with? We can squeegee them into the drains or something before the cops show up!"

One of the Furies - Velocity can't tell which; they all look alike - answers her. "What did we do? We didn't do anything. Why did you attack us?" She begins to get to her feet, along with her sisters. One of them doesn't look like she can do anything more than get up. Neither of the other two are attacking. They seem like they're trying to protect themselves in case Velocity attacks again.

The car lifts off the ground, and the ape-man pitches out of the side of the car. He manages to catch himself with one oversized hand before he hits the ground, which is approximately the same time that he notices that the car has yet to hit the ground. The driver has noticed a little more quickly, and she lets off the gas.

"We just can't catch a break, Teenage Caveman," she says.

"Indeed. It seems as though those of the more heroic persuasion always interject themselves where they are not desired, Calendar Girl," the ape-man, Teenage Caveman, answers. Despite his savage appearance, his voice is deep and cultured, vaguely British upper-crust.

The two of them look around, trying to spot the source of the levitation. Teenage Caveman sees a man in a mask, and assumes (correctly) that he is the source of the problem. He reacts by leaping from the car, landing about 10 feet away from Teke. His jump was clearly superhuman, as he cleared over 20 feet in height alone. Calendar Girl doesn't seem to be doing anything at the moment. She is still sitting at the driver's seat of the convertible.

The two bandits glance to one another, and simultaneously drop the bags that they are carrying and press buttons on their belts. They disappear from sight, though Nanowire and Grimalkin can both still sense them. They obviously didn't know that they'd need a distraction to properly hide from you. They're both running away, and the other one (who had remained invisible) is standing still.

The man in the battlesuit relaxes his posture, and reaches up for his helmet, taking it off. The face inside is bald and a bit jowly, but it looks a lot like Icarus might in another 20 or 30 years.

"Thanks for the help there. I was trying not to destroy Haas Jewelers, but a four-on-one fight would have meant I couldn't hold anything back," he says. "I got my wife's wedding ring there, so it has a sentimental value to it."

Nanowire's radar picks up something. The invisible bandit has raised up his gun, and seems to be lining up a shot on the man's head.
