Maximillian Prophet - PL 11 Hero - Prince of Boredom

Recommended Posts

Hi, new player here looking for some action. This is my attempt at a mystic investigator type (ala John Constantine). I don't have the UP, so could use some help for any discrepancies. Thanks.

Player's Name: Prince of Boredom

Power Level: PL 11 (152 PPs)

Unspent PPs: 2

Character's Name: Maximillian Prophet

Height: 6'

Weight: 175

Hair: Brown

Eyes: Blue

Description: Max is a handsome man who appears to be in his late 20’s to early 30’s (the time when he first put on the Ring of Azathul and awakened his Demonic heritage). He wears his brown hair short, and has enchanting deep blue eyes that glow a sinister red color when actively utilizing the powers of his demonic heritage (currently Fearsome Presence, Magical Awareness, and Hellfire Control from the Ring of Azathul). He typically dresses casually; blue jeans, a t-shirt, and leather jacket when necessary, and is never without his sunglasses. While he generally dresses in a style suitable for the age he appears, he is known for occasionally carrying anachronistic items; an old gold pocketwatch being the most obvious.

History: In late October 1957, a team of police raided a warehouse in upstate New York suspected of harboring a cult deemed responsible for various deaths occurring over the last few years. However, when the police on scene finally breached the warehouse, it was empty save for a small child sitting in the center of an elaborate pentagram drawn in the blood of five lambs that lay at the five points of the mystical symbol. Surrounding the pentagram was a circle of black candles, recently lit, that seemed to imply that the police had interrupted an elaborate ritual before its completion. The lead detective, a superstitious Irish Catholic of devout faith, held the crucifix hanging from a gold chain around his neck as he crossed the unholy pentagram and took the child into his arms. Fearing for the child’s soul, the detective ensured that he was given into the care of a local Dominican orphanage.

Given the name Maximillian Prophet by the monks, the child grew strong and healthy, with a voracious appetite for learning. While this appetite allowed him to succeed in school, his appetite extended beyond the secular studies of public education. Max spent much of his free time studying the holy texts of Judaism and Christianity, showing a predilection, though not obsession, with the more spiritual and mystical aspects of those religions. At the age of 18 Max was accepted into NYU on a scholastic scholarship, and graduated 4 years later with a degree in philosophy and an acceptance letter from the Tulane University School of Law.

Not surprisingly, Max did well in law school, despite the lure of the city of New Orleans and this being the first time he had truly been separated from the monastery that had raised him. Shortly after graduating, Max successfully completed the Louisiana bar exam, and decided to stay in New Orleans and practice there for a few years. He began his career as an underpaid assistant prosecutor for the city. The job suited him well, as Max had always believed in the absolutism of Good and Evil, and took great pride in his calling punishing the wicked and depraved. After just a year and half, Max began prosecuting his own cases.

It would be his second case that would change his life forever. He was prosecuting a man suspected of murdering young girls as part of some voodoo ritual; a case he tried with a personal determination born from his own experience. While pouring over the evidence collected from the defendant, Max’s eyes fell upon a gold ring with a demonic visage that seemed to call to him from within the plastic evidence bag. Intrigued, Max opened the bag and took the ring out to examine it more closely. For seemingly no good reason, Max gently slipped the ring onto his finger, where to his surprise it seemed to imperceptibly shrink to fit him perfectly. Then, a vision of hellfire and brimstone washed over him, gone almost as quickly as it had appeared. Shaking his head and attributing the scene to the long hours he’d been spending on the case, Max returned all of the evidence; though he seemed to forget to remove the demonic ring.

Only days later, while Max was cross-examining the defendant, some inner power of his seemed to come to the fore, as an unmitigated fear welled up inside the voodoo priest, and he confessed everything. For the next month, Max continued to have more and more lucid infernal visions and nightmares. Unsure what to do, Max went to a local mystic and friend who immediately recognized the ring that Max only now realized he’d been wearing since the trial. Pulling a massive, dust covered tome from a cluttered bookshelf, his friend leafed through pages that smelled of times long forgotten. Finally, he stopped, a look of fear on his face, as he turned the book to Max. On the page was an exact replica of his ring, with the caption “The Ring of Azathulâ€Â. The tome stated that Azathul had been a lieutenant of hell who had come to Earth to corrupt holy men. In the 11th century, Azathul had been defeated by the combined efforts of kabbalists and Catholic priests; only his ring survived. The ring remained in the care of the Church for hundreds of years, its mystical scholars studying the ring, attempting to learn its powers. In the end, they determined that only one of demonic blood could wear the ring and unlock its secrets. Max stared at the passage for an eternity, not wanting to believe the truth of his bloodline, fearing for his eternal soul.

Now, wanting to know the truth, Max began searching the past that he had always been afraid to look into, his own. Getting copies of the police report from when he was found, and comparing it with various other sources, some mundane and some mystical, he was able to finally understand himself. Max was the child of practitioners of the most black and vile magics. Their lineage could be traced to the fabled Black School of Moorish Spain, where they trafficked with all sorts of unsavory demons. It was unclear what demon’s blood ran through his veins, and likely that it was more than one. It seemed that the ‘Ring of Azathul’ had awakened some of the powers of that blood, giving him demonic resilience as well as a mystical awareness of magic around him. It also seemed that he had found the path God had chosen for him, to use the powers of hell against itself.

Maximillian immersed himself in mystic lore, learning everything he could, and using his demonic charisma to ingratiate himself into the hidden world of wizards, witches and warlocks. He also opened his own legal practice, using the laws of the mundane world to punish and annoy those of evil that he could not mystically defeat or exorcise. At some point during his personal crusade, he came across an artifact of a similar, larger crusade. Legends state that the ‘Sword of the Seraph’ was given to a holy member of the Knights Templar by an angel of the order of Seraphim, though certain mystic scholars hold to the belief that it was created and enchanted by mystics of the Church. Regardless of its true origin, the Sword was a powerful weapon against the heretical wizards and warlocks of the time, denying them access to their magical power. Having acquired the ‘Sword of the Seraph’, Max uses it once again for its intended purpose, the destruction of evil magic.

Maximillian Prophet’s crusade has been going on for more than 20 years now, and he is well known within magical circles as a fierce opponent of black magic. His appetite for knowledge is now targeted on the mystical world and those within it.

Your math here is correct, but your saves are *really* low. Remember, opponents at your PL will generally provoke a DC 20 save on you. You wouldn't stand much of a chance against that.

2) Does "extra effort" apply to you or to the devices?

3) I can't get your Powers to add up to 63, and I think the problem is with your Devices. Feats that are bought on powers inside the device container (like adding "mighty" to a Strike effect) don't increase the total cost of the device (they are included in the cost), but feats that are bought on the device container (like making the whole device "accurate"), increases the cost of the device.

So . . . Device 7 (your ring) with the 1 rank of Restricted costs 29 PPs, not 28.

Point taken. I've jumbled some points around to get his Fort and Will saves a bit more up to snuff. For his Ref save, I really want him to be basically a 'normal' human, so I've left that pretty low.

2) Does "extra effort" apply to you or to the devices?

For the Ring, it applies to Max. For the Sword it applies to the device (I ditched the watch for now).

You're absolutely right, I was imbedding some feats within the device that shouldn't have been. I've redone the sheet (below) and broken each device into its constituent parts so you can check my math.

Everything looks good except there are a few minor problems with your drawbacks:

1. By the book, ranked Feats can't be Noticeable. Fearsome Presence is neither "passive" (UP), nor is it a "Continuous, Permanent, or mental power" (Core). It's not actually a drawback. If, however, you bought those 10 ranks as Enhanced Trait: Feats - Fearsome Presence 10, in other words you bought it as a power instead (and it could be countered, nullified, drained, etc.), then it would qualify for that drawback. People would know that your scariness is the result of a power (i.e. noticeable). That is a (very) minor drawback (worth about 1 Pt).

2. Devices don't really qualify for the Full Power drawback because you can't ever use a device at fewer than maximum ranks. If you mean that the powers within the device can't be used at less than Full Power, then you should buy the drawback on them (reducing their cost within the device). Does that make sense?

Some solutions (so you don't have to rework your character) . . .

-You could make your Regeneration Noticeable.

-You could pick up an minor weakness or vulnerability. For example . . .

Vulnerability to powers with the holy/divine/angelic descriptors (+1) - 1 PP

Actually, drawback or not, I prefer this over it as a feat anyway. In my mind, I always wanted to treat it like a power (in the orignal version of Max, made in 1st Ed, it was an extra from Super-Charisma anyway).

2. Devices don't really qualify for the Full Power drawback because you can't ever use a device at fewer than maximum ranks. Yeah, limiting the powers was the thought. I'll do this for the Ring (I just don't see demons 'pulling their punches' with Hellfire). I'll take it off the sword just because I don't know how I'd spend the extra point in the device.

-You could make your Regeneration Noticeable.

I had always considered this because it was one of his demonic powers, so I think I'll go with that.

Also, just one quick question. In this shared world, what descriptor does Demonic fall under. I could see magical, possibly alien, or a completely separate Demonic descriptor. I don't really have any preference, just curious.

Ok, to recap, I'm going to change the post above (Max, part deux) as such:

1) Change the Fearsome Presence feat to an Enhanced Trait (with the noticeable drawback).

2) Remove the Full Power drawback from the two devices; this will result in a loss of two PPs to the build.

3) One of the PP losses will be to his Will Save (lowering it from 2 ranks to 1 rank).

4) Adding the Full Power descriptor to Hellfire Control within the RIng of Azathul. The 1 PP gained from this drawback will be added to Mind Shield within the device(effectively recouping the Will Save lost).

5) Adding the Noticeable drawback to Regeneration, recouping the other PP lost.

Is that all valid?

I'd probably go with both Demonic and Magical. Demonic will give your descriptors the specificity it needs, and Magical will give you the flexibility you might need (for Alt Powers and such).

Is that all valid?

Yep. Looks good. Approved

Once you get an approval by a second Ref, you're all set.

Ok, I like the history, and the character seems close to ready. Here's what I have so far.

1) You can't use a drawback along with your Super-Senses. Since it only costs 1 pp for Magical Awareness, you can't take a 1 pp drawback with it and get it for free.

2) The same is true for the Regeneration.

And that was it, actually. My suggestion to you is to take some of your attack bonus and defense bonus through the appropriate feats (Attack Focus/Specialization and Dodge Focus), if you really want to have the Super-Senses and Regeneration. Once that's fixed, I'm ready to approve.

Good catch, Heridfel.

Prince, you could also consider another 2 pts. worth of drawbacks (like Vulnerability or Weakness).

Ok, didn't catch that, though I'm still going to have his eyes glow when he uses those powers...

Ok, went the easy route. Lowered BDB by 2 and took Dodge Focus 2. I've edited the first post in this forum since I'm (hopefully) close to done. Thanks for your help.
