A Man of Substance

Duncan Summers was waiting by the front door of the administration building when Dark Star arrived, leaning slightly on his cane and looking up at the floating figure above him. :bat: "Hello. Come in, won't you?" With that, and no other words outside, he turned and headed back inside the building, leaving Dark Star to follow behind him right through the glass. :bat: "Your arrival comes at an auspicious time. I've finished my lunch."

Dark Star left Mr. Harris and flew sedately for him over to the admin building, coming to a rest before the man already waiting for him. He flowed through the wall to take up a floating pace along side the man. "Mr. Summers I presume? If I'm a few moment late, I apologies. I was speaking with one of your students."

:bat: "Hrm," was the sole acknowledgement Dark Star got as the two men headed into Duncan Summers' private office, the room decorated with the results of a long, very successful career in education. Taking a seat, Summers evidently knew Dark Star well enough not to offer him one of his own. :bat: "Tell me about quantum physics, please." Summers led Dark Star down a series of rather probing questions about how his powers worked, showing enough insight to show that he had training far beyond that of the ordinary layman. :bat: "I'm satisfied as to your honesty. Tell me what has led you to choose an educational career path."

Dark Star rattled off his answers. He was no genius, never had been. But once upon a time, he'd been a hard working, if mediocre, scientist. It was pretty standard stuff really. The questions weren't that esoteric or ridiculously advanced; he doubted he could have maintained such questioning for more than a single question or two when compared to Doctor Archeville.

"Actually, until recently, it had never occurred to me. I never wanted to be a teacher; certainly I do not possess and education background like most teachers. But I had a rather enlightening conversation with someone recently and it has been in my thoughts ever since. The future and the next generation of heroes was premise. I do not age but, as was recently pointed out to me, that does not mean I wish to be battling villains until the end of time or until humanity reaches its potential. Someone, as in every generation, must take up that mantle. I do not claim to be an expert in anything nor a perfect hero. Indeed, I have made my fair share of mistakes. Perhaps more." He paused, shrugging his black shoulders a little for effect. It wasn't like he needed to but it helped convey his thought process somewhat.

"I've met a few heroes of late. Some were chosen for one reason or another for the mantle. Some took it upon themselves. Regardless, there will always be those who can and will step up to accept the burden and put others before themselves. I might not agree with everyone's methods or agenda, but I acknowledge that they are heroes nonetheless. All have overcome hurdles and learned what they needed to be such." He paused once more, getting his rambling thoughts and ideas focused.

"I don't know exactly how this idea fits really. Nor what I could teach. Science I suppose. Cultural perception maybe. I'm almost certainly the, or at the least one of, most knowledgeable person on this planet about the state of the galaxy, it's politics and what's out there. This might even be a long shot, formal education being a little outside my area." He shrugged a final time. "It doesn't really matter. The point was that I wished to help pass on what I can, to help the next generation be prepared and grow to reach their potential. To do my part as it were. Which brings me to your school."

:bat: "We have been in the market for an intergalactic civics teacher," said Summers thoughtfully. :bat: "I need you to pass a state licensing exam. This school is a legal entity in the state of New Jersey, and we are required to produce certain materials from all our teachers. Even ones who come with very respectable recommendations." He drummed his fingers on the desk. :bat: "In the meantime, I suggest you speak to Ms. Dugan, the assistant headmaster, about taking a position as a community volunteer. Would you be willing to work without pay until the state licenses you?"

Dark Star blinked his eyes once. "While I would be happy to teach what I know of the galaxy, I am not qualified as a civics teacher. Indeed, I am still learning about what has happened on earth over the last couple decades. I have some doubts about being able to pass a formal Civics exam dedicated to teaching that subject." He looked at the headmaster, his black face not capable of showing anything though Dark Star felt a little confused by the request. "Perhaps sciences would be better if you feel the need to report that I am an employee of the school. Obviously from your questioning, I am qualified in that field. It is likely the only state approved curriculum that I could pass with ease. But honestly, I wasn't expecting to be listed amongst the official state-reported stuff given the efforts taken to keep a low profile on the school's agenda."

He shrugged his shoulders, unconcerned. "Beyond that, I'm happy to pass on my knowledge and understand however I can. I wasn't really expecting to be paid at all. I do not have much in the way of expenses and my occasional work for the SCC more than covers those. Though if you feel the need, a fraction of a normal salary will be fine eventually. For now and later, I'm happy to volunteer my knowledge and service to help the next generation or any in need. Barring emergencies and the like, I'm available whenever is needed."

:bat: "Contrary to certain fictional depictions of super-education, " said Summers gently, "we are required to maintain state standards to receive certain grants and support from the state and federal government. The school's strong relationship with certain individuals in Freedom City shields us from any serious pressure from Trenton." He leaned back in his chair. :bat: "We can make the arrangements necessary to accommodate your needs. And you can do the same for us." He hrrmed. :bat: "Would you be willing to act as an escort for our students when they undertake various extracurricular activities?"

Dark Star nodded. "I never doubted that. Educating and guiding the youth, tomorrows leaders is no minor task. Standards are important benchmarks, regardless of financial backing. Though, if the school is having financial troubles, I may be able to offer some minor assistance."

He nodded once more. "I don't see why not. I am here to help. Barring my hero responsibilities, I'd be honored to watch over them."

The two men talked for a little while more, hammering out the mundane details of what Dark Star would be expected to do as a member of the school's teaching staff. :bat: "I'm satisfied that you are capable of doing the job you have asked to do," said Summers with a nod. :bat: "I've taken the liberty of having my secretary prepare your papers. I had a feeling we'd be able to work something out." He smiled slightly and said in an unusually welcoming tone. "Welcome to the faculty."
