Things had been getting weird since that night, well besides the whole ability to turn into a giant monster thing. He was actually getting worse at his ability to use it. It would never last as long the second time he transformed as he did the first. He thought the powers were simply leaving him. "Easy come, easy go." thought Samael. That was before he started noticing the changes within himself. When he started going to the gym again, he noticed that he had gotten a lot stronger since last time. Also, he could run on the threadmill far longer than he had previously. The monster was getting weaker, but he was getting stronger.

Was he turning into the monster? Samael didn't really see any other explanation. But it excited him more than it scared him. To him, the monster wasn't something to be feared as much as it was something to be embraced. Whatever it was, it had given him the power to do real good out in the world. He didn't lose himself to rage and madness when he transformed. He was calm, cool and collected. Okay, maybe he went a little nuts on a power trip, but really he was in control of his actions. He didn't cross any lines and he never hurt anyone too bad. Samael liked the experience to going on a roller coaster blind folded; he had no idea where the ride would take him, but he was pretty sure he would enjoy the ride.

People always seem to find themselves falling into routines. They find a set order of tasks that meet their needs and simply repeat that process over and opver again. In that way, you get to know other people when their routines intersect with your own.

I for example meet lots and lots of people due to my job. I meet most of them during the morning rush. A lot of them are dock workers and construction guys who are picking up subs for their entire crew for the day. Which is a double edged sword for me. I get lots of money out of the deal, but that’s a hell of a lot of sandwiches to make first thing in the morning. But because I fill these orders so often, I’ve unconsciously memorized them, even though I routinely get 7 orders that come out to a total of 172 sandwiches.

But this whole hero business messes with all that. I don’t have it quite as bad as the others do though. I’m effectively super like maybe 10% of the time. Where as other people are just super 24/7, which really just adds a whole 'nother set of issues. I mostly stick to patrolling after hours. Ordinarily I couldn’t do that but since I got my powers I feel like I’ve just got energy to burn. Anyways the point is, if you’re going to be a hero, you have to learn to just roll with the punches sometimes and just take the crap that comes at you on a given day.

I’ve been trying to find a place where I can practice using my new abilities but as of thus far, I can’t find a good place. You see I know that I’m very strong, stronger than I thought was possible, even for metas, but I can’t find my upper limit without doing some major damage.

I started out moving the refrigerator down in the deli, but that proved too easy. Next I tried moving my car, again, it was real easy. Pick up trucks were also easy. But after that point I started having to do some more dangerous stuff. I tried hefting a cement truck… I did it with one hand. I went down to the docks and tried moving some stacks of the storage containers, still too easy.

Then I got really daring. I picked up the crane that was moving things about. That was a bit difficult, but again, I could do it without a great exertion of effort. But now I have no idea what to do next. Anything I can think of that’s heavier than that crane is like a land mark. Jumbo jets, cargo ships, heck buildings. I don’t know how strong I am, and I can’t exactly just ask people if I can toss around their million dollar piece of machinery just for ha’s.

Sprinkles is my very best friend in the world. He happens to be about 10 inches tall, is furry, has 4 legs and a tail. In other words, he’s my cat. He’s a Siameese cat with piercingly blue eyes. He’s pretty quiet most of the time. I only notice he’s around when I feel something brushing up against my leg. I only get him to meow once a day, and that’s when he realizes that I’m awake and that I am now in a food-giving position. If I ever ignore him, I’ll get a little nip on my nose for my insolence.

His favorite toy is actually the drawstring on my old pair of pajama pants. But he doesn’t play with it the way you think he would. Ordinarily you would dangle a string over a cat and they would bat it around. But if you do that with Sprinkles, he’ll just stare at you with his head cocked to the side, like he’s looking at a crazy person. What he likes is if you ball up the string and toss it across the room in a big arc. He’ll chase after it and pounce the ball while it’s still in mid air. He’ll wrestle with it for a bit, and get all tangled up before he brings the string back to you for another round. I anxiously await for the day a parade goes passing by our house and confetti is raining down outside the window.

Adjusting to a new body was quite possibly the weirdest thing Samael ever had to do. Normally people just grew into it gradually, but in Samael’s case he got 4 feet taller, and 800 pounds heavier just overnight. It was like going through puberty all over again, only now he was quite a bit more destructive than he was back then. Getting through the front door was an adventure in and of itself. Sprinkles for one also let him know what he wasn’t too keen on the fact that his master seemed hesitant to fuss with him the way he used to. He got over it however when Samael tried giving Sprinkles a few treats, but wound up tearing the bag in half and spilling the contents all over the floor.

The next day was even worse when Atlas woke up the next day and realized he had no way of actually preparing all the sandwiches and other breakfast meals that he ordinarily did at his deli. He could just barely fit behind the counter let alone use any of the knives without potentially breaking them. He had to close the deli down for the day, and probably indefinitely. There were a lot of complaints – up until the customers realized the owner was a BIG RED MAN!

Atlas's new powers had opened up a whole new avenue for him to explore. He could blend into any crowd now, and after a bit of experimenting, he had discovered that he maintained some super-strength no matter how well transformed. He was never nearly as strong as he was as Atlas, but he rarely needed that level of strength, even when actively heroing.

But now he had a new way to on patrol. Take on the form of joe someguy and then walk down all the bad neighborhoods. Soon enough someone will think that you're easy pickins and try to accost you. That's when you put them through a wall. And you know you're in the bad part of town when no one comes to investigate the screaming that's happening right outside their window. I know my job is done when anyone can walk down any side alley in the city without fear of being attacked.

Things are starting to get a little weird. I feel like I'm being followed or watched or something. I can't really describe it, it's like seeing something just beyond the range of your vision. For like the first week, I just shrugged it off, ignoring what was going on and chalked it up to a lack of sleep. But then it kept happening.

It wouldn't stop. I really think something's wrong with me. I could just brush it off saying "I'm just being paranoid" but what if I really was paranoid? Am I going to have to spend the rest of my days constantly looking over my shoulder and yet see nothing there? I should probably talk to someone about all this, but do I really know anyone all that well?

Link to comment

I can't sleep worth a damn anymore. Its worse than feeling like I'm being watched. I keep hearing whispers and white noise no matter where I go. I can't shut it out anymore. The only sleep I'm getting is when I just drop from exhaustion and I usually just wake up a few hours later. I haven't gone on patrol too much recently because of it.

I mean honestly, I'm a danger to everyone if I'm not care as it is, the last thing Freedom needs is me stumbling around when I'm just out of it. Especially when my excuse is "Sorry everyone, I just haven't been sleeping all that much because of all the voices in my head." For some reason I don't see that going over so well with FCPD or AEGIS let along the other heroes.

Link to comment

"SHUT UP! JUST SHUT THE HELL UP!" roared Atlas defiantly at the darkness. "Day in and day out I hear your whispers! Every time I dare to open my eyes I see just the tiniest glimpse of you! I know you're there, so come out and face me! Stop hiding COWARDS!"

"As you wish." spoke the Darkness.

Atlas's mind was crushed almost instantly by the wave of the mental onslaught. He was dragged down into their deepest depths, for once in his life, utterly powerless. One could not stand against many. "Welcome to the Unity." said Atlas aloud to the dark surroundings of his bed room, his cat darting from the room. "Welcome home."

For the first time in nearly a week Atlas slept. He really did need it, after all, tomorrow was going to be a big day.

All across the city, battles had broken out and chaos roamed the streets. But due to the quick intervention of the local heroes, the rampaging monsters were quickly dealt with. While the damage was extensive, it could have been a whole lot worse. News reporters were just making it on scene to report what had transpired today, and to inform the public of who was behind it all. While the heroes were working on restoring order and the status quo, a new danger was emerging.

Before they could more than a few words in, the reporters were cut off as their signals were hijiacked. All across Freedom City, a familiar face and voice came on over the televsion and radios, Captain Thunder. The camera focused on his face, taking up most of the screen, a bit off smoke visible over his shoulders. "Citizens of Freedom City, may I have your attention?" began Captain Thunder in a voice that carried to the ears of the citizens all across Freedom. "I have been asked to speak to the public about the events that have transpired this morning in an attempt to alleviate your fears. The rumors you have heard are indeed true, the city was attacked by rampaging Kaiju early on this morning.

"But due to the quick response by our cities fair heroes, the threat was dealt with handily and there was minimal damage done. Now, with such an attack, the question that springs to everyone's mind is who was behind these devastating attacks. I standing before you knowing the answer."

"I did it."

The only sound that could be heard throughout Freedom was Thunder's uncharacteristically harsh and cold laughter. "What?! You're surprised by this? Like I could really stand to watch you idiots put the world in peril over and over again, never getting a moment's rest. So I decided that the city would do better under my ruler ship. There were disagreements of course..."

Thunder stepped to the side of camera to reveal the smoking building behind him: Freedom Hall. The national land mark appeared as if it had a bomb go off inside of it, but even the fire and smoke couldn't obscure the tremendous damage done to it. The Freedom League itself was scattered all across the front lawn, like discarded toys. Most interesting of all was the fact that Captain Thunder was also sprawled out on the lawn.

"Oh right, I completely forgot to mention..." said the fake Captain Thunder stepping back into the frame. "I'm not really Captain Thunder. But that isn't particularly good news as far as you as concerned..." The Captain got red in the face, almost as if he was about to bellow, but then his face contorted, revealing his true face. The face of Atlas.

"Ta dah!" cackled Atlas. "Don't think this changes anything though. My pets were just the opening act. I've go so much more in store for you today. For instance, I might have told some friends of my plans..." continued Atlas as the scene cut to a riot on Blackstone Island before returning to him. "... and I think they'd kill to be part of the winning team. How about you?"

"Oh and before I go, two quick pieces of advice. I'd avoid hospitals if I were you, the smell of blood attracts my pets, and yes, there are more of them. And secondly, if you're working on a computer, I suggest saving your work because you're about to lose power right about ... -"

As the city goes dark, the riots begin as there is chaos in the streets.

The heroes swoop into action, but is it too late...?

Tropes! Take 2:

The Gruevasion & Atlas' trip to Russia offers examples of:

Darker And Edgier And it's only getting worse. Atlas strays into a darker mentality which is started by his continuing troubled past, and his continuing struggle to keep a perspective on the world given his great power.

It offers a Deconstruction on what happens to the hero after they deliver their World of Cardboard Speech and have to go back to the way things were.

It takes a cynical approach than is normal and takes itself quite seriously, as it starts to explore Atlas' origins .

I've really started to come to terms with myself. And not just because I now recognize that I am a Grue on a molecular level. It's now that I realize, what I should have realized years ago. I realized that I'm a hero. Or at least, I should be. And that's what I've realized, I've always tried to avoid that duty. When I first got my powers, I was just content to beat up punks that happened upon my street. It took a chance encounter with a few heroes to get me out of that rut. But I never left it entirely. I worked with the Midnighters to be sure, but I was never much of a team player, and even if we did work as a team, we rarely did so in the daylight. Or really, anywhere that would get us noticed. I stepped a toe into the limelight when I boxed Fulcrum, but I hastily retreated back into my safe zone shortly there after. Then I was thrown into the limelight with the Grue Invasion, and my secret was out. And what did I do? I went to friggen Russia for a few months. I didn't even hang around to give a proper explanation. And you know what? The people of Freedom City deserve better. The people of the world deserve better. They deserve to look at me as a hero. I have that obligation to fill. I can't run away from my duty, even though it quite frankly scares the crap out of me. I have to be who I was meant to be. I have to go out there and be a face that comforts people, not just a fist that punches the bad guys.
