Over the River and Through the Woods

The entire cave began to glow brightly, but it didn't make Lucy feel any warmer. Agnes was completely consumed by the glow, both in mind and body. Agnes began by concentrating very hard on the church where she'd grown up. Once she could see it in her mind's eye in great detail, she was overwhelmed by a falling sensation, falling toward the church. Suddenly Agnes felt the world move, and the sensation of falling became even more real. At the last moment, Agnes pushed herself forward over the edge of the fire and grabbed Lucy around the neck. Both of the girls vanished leaving the cave behind for good.

THUD!

Lucy and Agnes smacked the stone floor of St. Sebastian's basement hard. The cold air of the basement felt surprisingly warm by comparison.

"It worked!" Agnes exclaimed. "It worked."

It took Lucy a minute to realize that they were, in fact, back in the church. For a moment, she was overcome relief.

"Thank you!" she exclaimed, hugging Agnes' neck tightly.

The gratitude and relief were genuine. But then very quickly, Lucy's more typical nature asserted itself. She pushed Agnes away, clamored up off the floor, and wanting nothing more than to get away from that strange girl and this strange place, took off running for the stairs. She stripped off Agnes' sweatshirt and tossed it away as she ran. It didn't matter to her how tattered her dress, she wanted to be done with this horrible day and all of its trappings.

Agnes scrambled to her feet, tempted to go after Lucy, but she stopped herself. This was a lot for the rich girl to take in in one day. It had been quite eventful. No, Agnes decided it was best to let her go. Maybe she'd look her up one day soon, just to check up on how she was recovering.

Satisfied that there was nothing else she should do, Agnes went and checked on the sword, before heading back to her room. The clock on her desk said 11:00am.

"What?"

Agnes pressed the date button on the clock to be sure.

"Wow . . ."

The girls had returned to the basement only a few minutes after they left. It was a mystery to be sure, but Agnes was too tired for mysteries. She laid down on her bed. Perhaps her head would be clearer after a little nap.
