Over the River and Through the Woods

When the sword appeared out of nowhere, Lucy tried to jerk her hand free, but Agnes was suddenly very very strong.

"What the hell?"

Stuck in Agnes' tight grip, she could be nothing but obedient. Lucy stood behind the church girl, nearly blinded by her brightness. She wanted to run away as fast as she could, but instinctively she knew that this angelic-looking church girl was far less dangerous to her than those howls.

The howls continued to grow closer, and and the trees at the edge of the woods began to shake violently. With a wild screech six horrific-looking creatures came charging out of the woods. As soon as the creatures hit the clearing they unfolded large bat-like wings and, with several powerful beats, took to the air. They crossed the distance to Agnes in seconds and descended on her with an even more violent cry.

Agnes and the sword were ready for the assault.

Before she had a chance to react (or even scream), the demons were bearing down on top of them. In the seconds before all hell broke loose, Lucy got a good look at their attackers. The creatures were large, just a little smaller than a grown man. They had the same basic shape as a human man; they were anatomically correct, but their faces were horribly twisted and animal like. And, of course, the large bat wings protruding from their backs marked them as decidedly inhuman. The demons had wicked eyes that were yellow and jaundiced, and their skin was as black as coal. They sported long black fangs in their vicious mouths, and long black talons on their hands and their feet.

The two demons on either end of the formation swooped out on their black sails in a large winding arc, and then slammed into the two girls from behind. One of the demons dug its clawed feet deep into Lucy's shoulder and lifted her off the ground. The girl screamed and flailed wildly at the black-skinned creature, but it's skin was burning hot and seared Lucy's flesh with every touch.

Before they were more than a few stories off the ground another demon swooped up and grabbed Lucy's leg. She screamed again at the awful grip of those burning claws. With her one free leg, Lucy kicked the demon square in the face. The creature snorted in pain and nearly toppled over in the air. It let go of her leg while it flapped its wings trying to right itself. The demon holding her shoulder continued to soar upward, and the second demon dove in for another round of tug-of-war with Lucy's body.

The demons moved far too fast for Agnes to do anything about the two that flanked them, but the four that came straight up the middle got more than they bargained for. Agnes watched them approaching, as if in slow motion. Her heart was beating in her throat, but she was trying to be patient. Agnes gripped the sword with both hands . . .

"Wait for them. Wait."

Agnes' heart skipped a beat as she swung the ancient blade in a wide arc in front of her. The sword was glowing white hot. As the blade collided with the first demon, it erupted in a shower of sparks. The demon howled and threw up its arms in defense, but the blade burned right through its body, cutting it in two. The top half of the demon didn't have a chance to hit the ground. It dissolved into a black stinking mist as did the rest of its body. The sword kept traveling in its arc, releasing the brilliant energy. The demon that was right behind the first was caught in the wave of energy. With another screech, the demon was blasted off the ground and launched back nearly a hundred feet. It struck the ground and rolled in the snow until it finally came to a stop in a steaming, lifeless heap. Immediately it began to dissolve into thick black smoke.

The two remaining demons threw themselves onto Agnes, their claws scratching at her face and neck, and trying to wrestle her terrible weapon from her grip.

The demon continued to rise with each flap of its wings, carrying Lucy higher into the air. She didn’t dare look down, and she couldn’t fight against the claw that mercilessly gripped her shoulder. It was burning hot, scalding her flesh, and it was the only thing keeping her from falling to her death. So, she concentrated on the only thing she could, the second demon that was pulling at her legs for sport.

Lucy screamed as the second demon swooped in again. She kicked at it wildly, but it managed to grab her around the ankle. Once again, the second demon yanked hard, trying to pull her loose from the grip of the first. And this time it succeeded. With a yelp of pain, Lucy was wrenched free of the grip the first demon had on her shoulder. The second demon beat its wings hard carrying Lucy, who was now hanging upside down by her leg, higher and higher.

The two demons clambered onto Agnes, trying to force her to the ground. She started to collapse under the assault, because she just knew that she couldn't stand up to them. But that was not the case at all. Even though the demons were large and muscular, they felt light as air and not very strong at all. A demon grabbed her face and tried to pull her down, but Agnes didn't budge. She just smiled beneath the black hand. This being a hero thing was turning out to have it's perks.

Agnes reached out with her free hand and grabbed one of the demons by the neck. She stepped forward and drove the creature head-first into the ground. The second demon was hanging on to her back for dear life, trying to choke the breath out of her, but Agnes barely felt it. She stepped on the downed demon's neck to keep it immobile and reached up with her free hand, grabbed the second demon by its arm and slammed it into the ground next to its brother. Agnes raised the sword, ready to finish the pair off when she caught something out of the corner of her eye. It was Lucy, up in the air.

"Stay!" she barked at the demons.

The celestial wings formed at her back, and she launched herself into the air toward Lucy. She led with her sword tip, and speared the demon holding Lucy. It vanished into black smoke, and Lucy began plummeting toward the ground.

"Uh oh!"

Agnes kicked the second flying demon hard in the face. She was wearing sneakers, but she delivered the blow with such force, the demon went spiraling head over heals toward the ground. The girl then spun in mid air and dove toward the falling Lucy. She tried to match her speed and catch the girl gently but collided with her pretty hard. Agnes wrapped her arms around Lucy's waist and tried to slow them both before hitting the ground. She managed to change their trajectory enough, but didn't lose much speed. Agnes hit the ground feet-first and slid through the snow, before coming to a stop. Without putting Lucy down (she was unwieldy but not heavy), the girl turned and pointed the sword at the last two demons that were flying across the clearing toward them. The energy blast from the sword reduced them both to smoke.

Lucy was still out cold. Neither the icy wind nor the crash landing woke her. The trauma of her injuries and the continued exposure to the bitter cold was taking its toll. Her coat was still in the coat room at St. Sebastian's, and she wasn't dressed for the cold. Her limousine, after all, was heated, and the $2,900 "throw away" silk dress she wore to the ceremony wasn't build for combat or the cold. If something didn't happen soon, Lucy wasn't going to make it out of this alive.
