Midnight Madness (IC)

Recommended Posts

The big, jet black car thundered down the highway. Under the hood the large engine roared and rumbled. The headlights on the road gave a clear view of what was ahead: The off-ramp into Freedom City. Tearing down the ramp with your foot on the gas, a great sense of uneasiness crept over you. Somewhere in Freedom City there was a crime being committed, and you were going to stop it. There was no time to waste.

Screaming through downtown in your Horsh 853 Roadster, nicknamed the Night Cruiser, you head straight for The Fens. If The Raven had taught you anything in those lessons of hers, it would be what logs you should turn over when you want to find bugs. The Fens were always crawling (sometimes literally) with criminals. What better place than there to rough up a few no-gooders than here, in Freedom City's own Heart of Darkness?

---

The breeze in the fens is brisk tonight. It is easily enhanced by the wind rushing through your hair as you cruise through the skies of Freedom City. Supported by nothing but a magical flying surfboard you glide through the air effortlessly looking for something to do. When flying straight gets boring, you take a quick dive, do some spins, and maybe even a back flip. There truly is nothing like the freedom of flying to give you a rush. Well except maybe for stopping a robbery in progress...

Sailing over the skies of the fens, you some how notice the large black-on-black car's headlights. Watching it cruise through the streets is fun for a few moments. Just as you begin to lose interest, you see the car pull of a crazy turn and swerve into a nearby alley. Through the use of your infrared goggles, you can see a lone figure stepping out of the car. Whoever it is seems to be patting themselves down, as if to make sure they have all of their possessions.

Hitting the breaks and taking a sharp turn down a side street reputed to be a haven for mob activity, Midnight pulls his vintage roadster into a bootleggers turn, guiding the two-ton beast into a lot away from casual observation. Taking a moment to make sure his Night Gun is in working order, he exits the vehicle. Closing the driver-side door, he scans the immediate area for any dangers that might be lurking in the darkness.

"That's not suspicious at all," Angel snarked. She quickly guided the board toward the alleyway to get a closer look at the scene. "That car is hot," she boldly announced into the alleyway, "Let's just hope not in more ways than one!"

"What is that, an aerodynamic piece of flying metal?", Midnight thought to himself when he laid eyes upon the odd device hovering above. Unsure whether the rider, a very attractive young woman, was a threat or not Midnight waited to draw the Night Gun from his shoulder holster until he could figure out why she was there.

"She's a hero, then", he thought to himself after her bold remark. "Good, it'd be a shame to mess up that pretty face", he mused behind his black gas-mask.

"You need to brush up on your history." His voice was deep and muffled by the featureless mask, creating an eerie effect that could make blood run cold. "And try to keep it down, or you'll scare the fish."

Angel stared at the masked man for a second. Lowering herself to his level, just outside the mist, she shrugged and smiled, "I'm not a big fan of history." She stepped off the board and it instinctively went under her arm. "The only fish you'll find around here is a few rotten tramps. And I'm not sure those types go for the creepy mask deal."

He walked from the Night Cruiser, leaving it at the center of his cloud of Midnight Mist, and walked to the edge of it's concealment. Now that the young woman had descended, he realized "very attractive" was an understatement. He took a moment to give her a quick once-over and nearly broke his act by making a statement only a millionaire playboy would dare make to a woman he just met... but he'd met her somewhere before, hadn't he? Her eyes were hidden behind a pair of magical goggle, but her lips and that body were unforgettable. "Angel Marks, you sly little minx," he thought to himself. As the pitch black mist wafted lazily about him, he spoke again in his gravely baritone."The name is Midnight. And I don't much care what these punks like. I'm here to clean house."

"Angel," she smiled, offering a hand of greeting to him, "and I like your way of thinking, Midnight!" She looked around at the mist and playfully swung her arm at it, "Though the gas has to go. I can't breath that stuff like you can."

Angel nodded and firmly shoo the mystery man's hand. Most people had seen her on television. Those cameras made for good and bad for herr. Luckily they weren't around at that moment.

"Well," she sighed, "I usually search out suspicious things around town late at night and try to help if need be." She points at the mist, "That certainly looks suspicious." Looking back to Midnight, she hid her impatience with a smile and bounced from one foot to the other, "Though it looks like you need some help. Two justice seekers are better than one!"

Sirens in the distance, not a good thing, a week ago he would have merely bowed his head and resigned to the fact that he could do nothing, but not anymore, not that his powers were back. Donning his glove, he took his blade in the other hand, how it felt good, knowing that he could protect someone using them once again, and with that he disappeared from his home, on his way towards the sound of the siren.

"There aren't any hospitals in the Fens, and emergency services avoid this place like the plague," Midnight thought to himself. "Angel, follow that ambulance! I'll catch up," he said to his partner as he turned and walked back into the black mist that concealed the Night Cruiser.

"Roger that," Angel said dropping the Aeroboard and having it land about a foot off the ground. Hopping on she raced after the ambulance. "If I had a nickel for ever ambuilance I've chased," she said to herself in flight, "I'd be five cents richer." She easily caught up with the ambulance. Peeking in the back she saw something.

Able to just match the speed of the Ambulance, Angel has the advantage of being airborne and being able to make sharper turns. After a few blocks she eventually catches up and then is able to peer through the back window.

You see to men dressed as paramedics sitting on the side rails of the ambulance. There is no one occupying the stretcher in the middle. They must be about to pick somebody up...

Turning the ignition switch, Midnight brings his Roadster to life, pulling out of the alleyway and following the airborne surfboard down the mean streets of the Fens. "This looks like a good lead,", he thought to himself. Blasting down the road, the Night Cruiser gains on the ambulance quickly, waiting for Angel to make her move.

There are two paramedics in the front seat of the ambulance. The one without his hands on the wheel gives you a "get out of the way" motion with his hands. Clearly it is difficult for the driver to see with Angel all up in his grill. Literally.

The midnight cruiser quickly tears after the Ambulance, before long, you gain a good amount of ground on the ambulance and can pull up right behind it.

The two cars speed along the roads through the fens. Soon it becomes apparent that the destination is somewhere down by the docks.

As the ambulance tears around a corner, with both Angel and Midnight in tow, they pass by an alleyway, and over the roar of the Night Cruiser, a new sound starts up. The sound of the motorcycle engines are higher pitched than the Night cruiser engines. Midnight sees them tear out of an alleyway and begin to give chase. Four cyclists that each sport leather jackets, opaque helmets. One of the riders brandishes a crowbar over his head. Another a chain, a third rider has a long wooden club, and the fourth seems to be carrying a long plastic stick of some sort.

The riders begin to close the distance between themselves and the Night cruiser quickly.

What used to be a simple night in the Fens seems to have quickly turned into a high-speed brawl!

Looking at the thugs, Angel weighed her options. She definitely wanted to plow in the thugs but something about the ambulance was suspicious. Thugs or ambulance, she thought., I could definitely hit all of them at once like they are right now. Suddenly she snapped back to the situation at hand. The ambulance was getting away! Taking off after it she growled. The thugs would be spared her righteous justice.

From one of the rooftops, Dalkaresh spotted several men on bikes sporting weapons of many different varieties, fearing that any attack against them would knock them off, and potentially hurt them excessively, Dalkaresh planned for something completely different. Appearing on the road, a good distance ahead of the bikers, he called upon his anger, shifting from his gentle and noble appearance, into that of a living nightmare, he appeared as a black and writhing mass with sharp edges and corners, his eyes shining murderously red, he let out a bestial roar that echoed throughout the city.

  • 1 month later...

A fearsome creature appears on the streets in the Fens. It shrieks, and draws all attention toward itself. One of the bikers screams, "What the hell IS that thing?!"

Another biker responds, "Keep it together Ronnie! We gotta pull this one off!"

Angel is caught by the waves of fear flowing off of the creature, but they have no affect on her. Midnight can't see past the Ambulance, and doesn't even know what lies ahead.

The ambulance keeps on rolling at top speed, with no reaction from either the driver, or the passenger.

"Let's hope this works," he thinks to himself as he accelerates his roadster towards the fender of the cyclist on his right. Executing a PIT maneuver, he taps the rear wheel, sending the motorcycle careening towards the left in an attempt to crash the two vehicles together. Lined up with the rear cyclist trying to help his freind regain composure, Midnight grins under his mask and break-checks.

The cyclist on the right side of Midnight's car fishtails and looses control of his bike. "Ahhhhhh!" He is dumped unceremoniously onto the pavement and goes skidding backwards and is soon out of sight.

Midnight's skill with his car is such that he was able to pull off the maneuver and still keep up with the ambulance!

The other three riders look like they are going to give the car a wider berth from now on.
