Agnes' early years are a mystery to her. At the age of 6, her mother left her on the doorstep of St. Sebastian's Church, and she has no memories of her life before then. She was given a Christian name by the Church and was raised by a kindly nun, Sister Agatha, to live a quiet, pious life of contemplation. At the age of 12, Agnes began having strange, seemingly supernatural experiences: visions, levitations, surviving injuries that would have killed grown men. At the age of 13, Agnes returned from one of the subbasements in the church, carrying what appeared to be an ancient Byzantine sword.

Some of the Church Fathers were convinced that this was a miracle, that Agnes was a Saint who had discovered the Icon of Emerentiana. These faithful devotees built a small shrine for the sword, and were further convinced of its divinity when it was discovered that only Agnes and a few of the church leaders could even lift the sword. Other Church leaders were not so sure. Father Enos, the head Patriarch at St. Sebastian's, contacted Duncan Summers who came to the church to run some tests on the girl. His tests were ultimately inconclusive, but Summers was convinced that Agnes was a metahuman and that the "miracles" were simply a manifestation of her powers. Summers also believed that the sword wasn't an ancient icon but was rather a manifestation of Agnes' will, an expression of her powers.

Agnes was not convinced by Summers, and she refused his invitation to attend the Claremont Academy. Miraculous things continued to happen around Agnes, and though she never told anyone, not even Sister Agatha, Agnes was developing some control over her powers. The development of her “miraculous†powers came to a head one night just before 14th birthday when three armed men broke into the church. It was clear that these men intended robbery, rape, and murder. Agatha was hiding in the nave, praying for mercy, when she heard a scream from the main sanctuary. Without a thought, Agatha got up from her hiding place, and ran into the light. She found herself standing in front of the three armed men, but she was not alone. The sword was in her hand. With one swing, the energy from the blade dispatched the three thugs.

Since then, Agnes has lived her life mostly in seclusion at the church. She is being educated by the nuns, and does volunteer work with the Church in the community. But her ability to summon the sword from its shrine and channel its power to perform the "miraculous" is steadily growing.

Agnes was helping to hand out candy and other treats at the Freedom City Halloween Festival when the whole block was attacked by a pack of werewolves. During the conflict, Agnes manifested far more of her powers than ever before, and with the help of the mechanical hero Byzantine, the werewolves were quickly defeated. The beasts vanished soon after, leaving no clue as to their origin.

While tending to the injured civilians, Agnes spotted something coming toward them through the air. She took off to intercept it, believing it to be another attacker. She met Lady Liberty in the air. Agnes didn't recognize the famous hero, and Lady Liberty believed Agnes to be another of the Halloween horrors. A fight ensued, and Lady Liberty was on the ropes until Captain Thunder showed up and pulverized Celestia. During the aftermath, Lady Liberty and Celestia both realized their mistake, and Lady Liberty determined to follow-up with the girl and begin her training.

In early December, St. Sebastian's church held a special afternoon service to honor those in the community who helped them fund their various charities. Industrialist and financial mogul Hieronymus King was one of the honorees, and he brought with him his teenage daughter, Lucy.

During the service, Lucy slipped away and went down into the church's catacomb-like basement to look around and kill time. Agnes was down there cleaning, and the two girls began to talk. Little did the two girls know that Lucy was being stalked by a shadow-like creature of unknown origin. The creature exercised its malignant influence on the two girls, sending both of them into inexplicable fits of rage. The two fought mindlessly until the shadow's master arrived and transported both of the girls to a distant, frozen land. The identities and purposes of the shadow and its master remain a mystery.

Having been trapped in a distant land, Lucy and Agnes were freed from the violent spell, and they quickly realized that they were no longer in Freedom City. They were in a range of high mountains covered with snow and ice. They were also immediately attacked by demons, presumably more creatures like the shadow from the church. Agnes summoned her sword and quickly dispatched the demons. Lucy was injured in the attack and nearly died from the cold, but Agnes (now Celestia) healed her wounds and used her sword's healing energies to protect Lucy from the harsh environment. Eventually Celestia was able to use her angelic energies to transport them home. Lucy immediately ran off, putting as much distance between herself and the "church girl" as she could.

Was there some larger purpose in causing the two girls to fight and then sending them away? Will the shadow or its master return to inflict more harm on either girl? Who knows. But Agnes is working as hard as she can to master her powers. Next time she'll be ready.

At the invitation of Lady Liberty, Agnes briefly (and very unsuccessfully) attended the Freedom League Christmas party. She only planned on staying long enough to meet Lady Liberty, but the world-famous heroine made sure that Agnes had to mingle at least a little. The girl spoke with several other Freedom City heroes, and she even shook hands with Captain Thunder. As soon as Lady Liberty moved off to meet and greet some other heroes, Agnes slipped out the back and walked home.
