Flat-Footed Defense

I'm sure I've read (in character edits) GMs remind players to round their Defense down when determining Flat Footed defense, but my exchange with Elric seems to indicate that this is backwards.

Is this house-ruled?

Its in the errata. The first thing in it.

page 13  dodge bonus: change “(rounded up)†to “(rounded down)â€Â.

The wording gets a little confusing, but if half of your Defense is Dodge, rounded down that would mean that the other half of your defense is innate, rounded up.

Defense 7, half is 3.5, so if you round the Dodge down, the Dodge is 3, which means intrinsic Defense is 4. This means that your Flat Footed Defense is half of your base defense (rounded up).

On this board, we've always run it as your flat-footed Defense is one-half your "base" Defense, rounded down.

You have Defense +8, your flat-footed Defense is +4.

You have Defense +9, your flat-footed Defense is +4.

If you've got an odd defence score, it's usually best to just go for an even one and buy dodge focus instead.

Look at it this way: Odd numbers are dodge, even numbers are defense. Makes it much easier.

Or if you're like me, tweak your trade offs every PL so the resulting values remain even and side step the entire issue, and save up until you can buy full defense.
