Characters Name:Lina (Li, Na)

Alternate Identity:Grandstand

Height:Five foot 2 inches or fifty feet

Weight:110 lbs or 25 tons

Hair:Black

Eyes:Blue

Description:

Civvie:Lina is an attractive young woman of average height and build. Someone you'd notice in a bar but not someone you'd remember later. She has shiny black hair that reaches partway past her shoulders, a clear, pale complexion, and bright blue eyes. She's usually dressed in stylish, designer clothing despite her apparent lack of a job. One item is always constant though, around her neck is a thick silver choker with a clear gem on the front it.

As Deva:Deva is an attractive woman who stands exactly fifty feet tall, wearing a shiny, plastic looking suit of grey and yellow that covers her torso, arms, and most of her face. Leaving her long legs and glossy back hair uncovered as well as her blue eyes.

History:Lina (Her first name is Na, her last name is Li. Her father filled out her school papers as 'Li Na' which ended up with her teachers and classmates calling her Lina), her mother's name is Kate and she was already pregnant with Lina when she married her husband Cheng, who had immigrated from China some years before. He adopted his wife's child, loving her as one of his own and was quite strict with her younger siblings if they tried to tease her about not being blood related to their father.

She grew up in a loving household, upper-middle class. Her father was chemist and her mother worked in advertising, both had long hours which left little time for their children. Lina for her part, did her best to please her parents, excelling academically, giving up extra-cirricular activities to help take care of her brothers and sisters. This gave her little time for a social life outside of school but she got by, making a few close friends and spending an inordinant amount of time online.

Then came college where Lina got her first taste of real freedom. For the first time since she was a little girl she didn't have to worry about anyone but herself and her grades which of course led to alot of partying. Too much in fact, one can only live off 2 hours of sleep a night & a diet of ramen and zima for so long before their body gives out. Her parents were not particularly happy to receive a call that their eldest daughter had not only been admitted for alcohol poisoning, but was now being kept due to a mixture of exhaustion, malnutrition, and extreme dehydration. They also didn't believe her when she tried to claim that she 'Felt fine and the doctor's were lying to pad her medical bills'.

After that she learned to relax a little, balance fun, work, and relaxing(somethign she'd never learned how to do at home) mostly due to her parents threatening to drag her home if she didn't. Lina majored in physics, eventually lucking out and interning for a R&D lab owned by Crosstech. It was home to a dual project. Somewhere, they'd managed to get their hands on a necklace that could shrink anything that touched it. It was easy enough to duplicate, but had one problem:it was powered by gems. Diamonds, rubies, etc. It would shrink then absorb them and they would wear away to nothing while the item was in use. So Crosstech had one group of scientists trying to figure out how to make this more cost effective while another group was trying to reverse engineer it to make things bigger. But so far the only progress either had made was a material that would stretch indefinately without tearing. Unfortunately it was neither sturdy nor cheap.

Lina, who was ecstatic at first, was more than slightly disappointed to learn that she would get all of the grunt work. Making coffee, copying things and working as a go-between for the two groups who'd been slowly building something of a unfriendly rivalry, not only trying to finish their own research but the other teams as well. She didn't really learn much either, since her security clearance wasn't high enough. If it wouldn't have looked so good on her future resumé she'd have quit after the first week. But she stuck with it anyway, sneaking glances and reading over files when no one was looking.

The competition came to a head one day, both of the groups running very volatile experiments practically side-by-side since their labs were seperated by a single wall. Lina herself doesn't know what happened, having snuck off to take a nap in the break room since no one would need her. What she remembers is waking up and noticing three things at once: She was very cold, nearly naked, and something was poking her in the back.

That something turned out to be the couch she'd been napping on, Lina was huge! And getting bigger, quickly she realized as her clothes popped and tore. This stunned her so much that it took her a few minutes to notice that she was sitting in wreckage. The entire building had been brought down. Hearing the pained cries of her coworkers she quickly started shifting through rubble, carefully digging out the dying figures that looked like they were the size of dolls. The ones she could find anyway, at least half seemed to be missing. She was too large to use the phone, spending an hour digging through the rubble for the necklace that would shrink her. Hopefully without killing her. It'd workd fine on animals.. but they'd been normal sized.

It took her nearly an hour to find it, thankfully it worked without any adverse affects. It wasn't very comfortable, giving her an odd sensation of being smothered and squeezed at the same time. But by then it was too late, the ambulance arrived finding her sobbing and wrapped in a labcoat, covered in odd cuts from the rubble. Crosstech paid her medical bills and quietly let her go, claiming she breached her contract when she called 911 instead of the special emergency number they'd set up and threatened her with fines and jail time if she ever talked about it. This was all done through a lawyer and they didn't take her calls, doing their best to wash their hands of the whole thing, never giving her a chance to explain that she was now fifty feet tall and could use some help getting back to normal.

A few days later her necklace ran out of power causing her to revert back to her now 'normal' size and destroying her car trying to make it back to the ruins of her lab lacking options she raided the wreckage of her old lab, managing to recover some diamonds(Enough for a month or two. A small fortune that she couldn't spend) and enough of the stretchy material to make something to cover herself with. Breathign a sigh of relief when it stretched with her to her full height. While she was doing that it occured to her that if she did indeed tell anyone what happened.. she'd end up in a lab alot like this one, being poked and prodded all day long. A thought that disturbed her so much she forgot to cover her tracks, leaving a rather large footprint in the dirt.

Crosstech found this and quickly put two and two together. Quietly sending a team to capture her for further study, Lina was assaulted as she was packing up her apartment(she'd decided to move back home for a while) and made an amazing discovery: her strength and durability hadn't diminished with her size. Gleefully defenestrating mercenaries who were armed with tranq darts that couldn't penetrate her skin. She manged to get one to talk and realized what she'd feared was true. Grabbing what she needed she decided to move to across America to Freedom City (she currently resided in California). And go back to college, taking a train and commiting a series of quiet jewelry heists to keep her powered.

During her trip she realized she enjoyed her new powers, ripping vault doors off like they were made of paper, being able to flip over cars with a flick of her hand... If only she could find a way to shrink back on her own. She could continue the research on her own, maybe contact a few other geniuses in the field.

Personality & Motivation:Lina has slowly turned into a selfish young woman who loves to have a good time while managing to retain a good work ethic(mostly motivated by the fact that if she can 'fix' herself then she can keep all the stuff she steals) She does her best to not hurt anyone she doesn't have to and most of her targets tend to either be jewelry stores or any sort of hi-tech research/item she thinks might help her achieve her goal.

Complications:

Secret Identity:Theft and assault are illegal, as such she tries to keep her illegal activites and powers a secret from everyone while balancing a normal life as a college student with an overprotective family checking up on her way too often.

The quiet war:Crosstech wants her to study, but they want her kept a secret nearly as she does. So they do their best to get her back as quietly as they can. From maxing out her credit cards on embarassing things to armed thugs trying to kidnap her.

Squeamish:Lina is rather squeamish. She can handle blood but not much beyond that. Bugs, sludge, sewage.. things like that tend to stop her in her tracks.

Too big:Her necklace requires alot of diamonds to keep her normal sized. Sometimes she forgets or simply can't stage a good heist in time and she ends up suddenyl alot bigger with disasterous results.

Not very likeable:Lina can come off as insulting, rude, and mean, rubbing people the wrong way. Often ending up disliked by people she doesn't even remember, getting overcharged, skipped over and generally ignored when other people wouldn't.

Easily distracted: Lina is distracted by anything she thinks might help her fix her condition. While she won't do anything stupid she will take risks in order to attain the object of her obsession. Sometimes even if it looks like a trap sometimes.

Ok, re-described her shrink device. Should be easy enough to 'disarm' it from around her neck, it'll grow with her and shrink once it's removed from her costume. Moved my windfall of points into said device so I can increase my shrinking to let me get to small size(so PP for powers stays the same.)

Added two ranks to acrobatics!

Fixed the stun DC.

Also changed her Alias from Deva to Grandstand.

I do see one snag: since Growth 12 gives +24 Str, adding that to her base of 14 gives a Str of 38/+14. Our cap on trade-offs is +/-3, so the most Str she can have is 36/+13.

Other than that, looks fine to me overall. I do think a block/chart clearly showing her stats at assorted sizes would be of use. Something like:

Lena, Gargantuan (Growth 12)

Str 38/+14, Con 28/+9

Attack +3, Grapple +33

Defense +3 (+1 flat-footed)

Knockback -16

Toughness +13, Fort +10

I'll get to moving those two points then, probably just more Superstrength but.... with normal strength/toughness/movement, wouldn't her stats stay the same for the most part?

Edit: Ok dropped strength 2 points and put them into another rank of SS. I'll work on those statblocks tomorrow, bedtime for me. Should I put them in another post or in the original?

Those just mean her Str, Toughness, and movement stay the same when shrunk. Having your Str and Toughness remain the same when using Growth is a Flaw.

Another rank in Super-Str is fine.

Her new stat blocks would look like so:

I'll have to go back and calculate the new carrying weights for her. Once I do, those blocks should be in the main/original post (between Powers and Drawbacks).

She has permanent/innate on her growth, making her fifty feet her natural height. Then she has normal everything on shrinking so her strength/con SHOULD remain the same right? When she shrinks I mean, turning her into a normal sized brute.

Link to comment

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

I'm not sure, since that's probably not the situation the creators had in mind when they came up with those extras. I'll need to ask around the ATT.

I'm especially unsure on the changes to Toughness (and Fort save). Unlike with Str, which is directly altered by Growth or Shrinking (adding or subtracting based on the ranks of Growth or Shrinking active), the Toughness score is affected differently by those powers (increased by Growth due to increasing Con, decreased by Shrinking due to a direct decrease to Toughness). Ditto on Movement, since they're altered differently (Growth adds a flat 5 feet per category [45 feet for Gargantuan], Shrinking decreases it by some fraction).

Link to comment

A suggestion: have the Device not grant Shrinking, but have it buy off the Permanent flaw on her Growth.

And if you really want her to stay as strong/tough in Medium form as she is when Gargantuan, just buy up her stats normally, then take the Dispersal Flaw on Growth. That way the "Growth" is actually just changing your combat, grapple and stealth modifiers, height, space and reach.

Dispersion could get a little odd, Especially considering it doesn't up her weight. And if I did that and she got power drained, how would she move?

I would like to point out a couple things:

A)That I'm effectively giving myself a drawback by sinking 33 points into my shrinking item(I know it's not actually that much of a drawback usually. I mean, being a giant usually isn't that problematic. Unless I'm on a boat or something) But it's still there.

B)I'm actually gaining Enhanced Strength 24, Enhanced Con 12, +15 feet of movement, some reach, and a lot of weight. Buying those stats with an item would only be 40 or so points, 8 ranks of device and I have 11 so I'm putting more points than needed into it.

But if it's too much of a problem I can just get rid of the normal stats and pump up her skills I guess.

The entire base concept -- her weight goes up or down with her size, but her Str and Con/Toughness (and 45-ft. movement rate) somehow don't change -- is already odd ;)

And if I did that and she got power drained, how would she move?

... hunh? She'd move the same as any other permanently Gargantuan person.

And being really, really easy to see (and thus targeted) by others, and being very inaccurate in combat. And not being able to enter most buildings without tearing out a section of wall, or ride in any vehicle short of a semi, and worrying about floors caving in beneath you.

Is it? It's already in the rules, I'm just starting off larger than normal with more stats. And as with her extra movement if she only weighs 100 lbs and can lift 15 tons or so.. I think she can do little superstrength hops ;)

And if I did that and she got power drained, how would she move?

Except if she weighed 25 tons she wouldn't be able to lift her own body weight. Not to mention getting dragged around by non-super people.

Yes yes, I was trying to say that it would be few and far between that the simple act of existing as a giant person would be detrimental to my health. Sure it might not be a good idea to suddenly make yourself a massive target in the midst of your enemies, but it'd be downright deadly to try and resume your normal size in something that you can't break but can't fit into either(Crushing yourself to death)

Ok I must have explained this wrong. My point is stat-wise it costs about the same(or more) for me to buy shrinking instead of buying those stats, so I don't really see the problem with having it the way it is?

I'm sorry if I'm being a pain, I'm not trying to be I just don't want to give up on it too early.

You miss my point: I was stating that Normal Strength, Normal Toughness, and Normal Movement are themselves odd. You adding Growth in makes it even odder.

And as with her extra movement if she only weighs 100 lbs and can lift 15 tons or so.. I think she can do little superstrength hops ;)

That'd be the Leaping power. Growth adds to movement because your legs get longer. Yes, the reverse is true for shrinking, hence my statement of why Normal Movement is an oddity.

Except if she weighed 25 tons she wouldn't be able to lift her own body weight. Not to mention getting dragged around by non-super people.

Incorrect application of Real World Logic -- one's own weight is never a factor when considering how much you can lift. ;) You Str score and size category are the only determining factors.

Because of the differences in the way Growth and Shrinking interact with Con/Toughness and Movement. I can't say for certain, but I'm guessing that the Normal [X] extras weren't designed to start at anything other than Medium.

I think we need to go back to the beginning. What is it you want?

"A character who is by default a giant (in both size and weight), but with some device can shrink back down to normal human size/weight. But no matter her size/weight, she remains as strong and tough as she is at her giant-est size."

Am I right so far?

I know it'd be the leaping power, I was suggesting an explanation as to why it would stay.

"A character who is by default a giant (in both size and weight), but with some device can shrink back down to normal human size/weight. But no matter her size/weight, she remains as strong and tough as she is at her giant-est size."

Ideally, yes. With the exception that I'd actually like her to be able to shrink smaller than normal if possible. But I'm actually ok with her not keeping her stats(not exactly thrilled, but keep it in mind if this is too much of a hassle)

Compromise seems to be necessary, as the only way I see for you to get what you want -- buy up stats, get Permanent Innate Dispersed Growth so Growth doesn't actually change your stats -- you've turned down.

Though, now that I think on it a bit more, since each size category of Growth effectively gives 4 ranks in Immovable, you could do the Dispersal Growth and add Linked ranks in Immovable, to represent increasing weight but no change in Str or Con/Toughness.

Or, go with Permanent Innate Growth and a Device that removes the Permanent flaw & also has Shrinking.

Link to comment

If I may add a suggestion to the Immovable theory, I do believe Density syncs up with Growth in that manner, but also gives you Strength and Toughness (not exactly Con though) like Growth (and also Super Strength). That would give you the weight you wanted too. That along with Growth with the Dispersal flaw might be a bit helpful to the idea.

Alright! Still here. Had a simple idea.

What if I simply bought shrinking with normal str/toughnessx2 and then paid for the Enhanced strength/con?

Size Reduction Matrix:Device 11 (easy to Lose) 3/rank=33pp

Shrinking 12 (Power Feats:Normal Strength, Normal Toughnessx2) 1/rank+3=15pp

Enhanced Strength 24 (Flaw:Limited to only replacing what is lost from shrinking) 1/rank=24pp

Enhanced Constitution 12 (Flaw:Limited to only replacing what is lost from shrinking) 1/rank=12pp

51/55pp used.

It's simple and would keep me strong/tough while losing all the other benefits of being ginormous. Like reach/grapple/weight.

Problem with that is if part of the Device is turned off (the Enhanced Str/Con from the Device are nullified), she'd have the Str/Con of a regular person of her size & build. But if the entire Device is turned off (or removed), she pops back up to being Gargantuan. Which is really weird.

I still say you should just go with high regular stats, Permanent Dispersal Growth, and add some Linked Immovable to represent the increased mass. (And I still say the entire concept is weird and illogical :) If her Str and Con remain the same no matter what her dimensions/mass, why would she ever grow bigger, since increased Str and Con are by far the two biggest [pun intended] benefits for increasing size?)

You can turn off parts of a device? I thought it was all or nothing?

And her popping back to giant is sort of the idea >_>

As for why she'd grow giant? That's reason she's knocking over armored cars and plundering labs is because she's trapped at giant sized and the device is horribly expensive to keep powered(It eats diamonds). Which is mentioned in her complications. Basically think Mr. Freeze from batman, but she's huge instead of cold ;)

And my biggest problem with dispersal is my lack of weight at maximum size. Someone with normal strength grappling her could drag her down the street >_> Could I get a weight increase as a powerfeat or something?
