Riverfront

August 9th 2019, 4 PM

The Riverfront district was as busy as ever on the Friday afternoon. City officials trying to get the last bit of work done before the weekend, locals and visitors starting their weekend in the nearby culture centers and the Yellow Brick Row shopping complex. Traffic had slowed down considerably. Everyone wanted to go somewhere. All in all, a typical Friday afternoon in Emerald City. Peace and quiet, as you would normally find in a city without super villains.

Until, suddenly, several men and women stopped what they were doing, and exited their cars. A young man, maybe in his early twenties, stood nearby, appearing seemingly from out of nowhere. He was dressed in a costume with dark and light blue stripes at a 45 degree angle all over his body. He wore light blue boots and small gloves in the same color as the light blue stripes, and had a hood pulled up with the same striped pattern. His eyes were hidden behind a light blue domino mask. One could just spot his short blonde hair at the edges of the hood. His eyes seemed to be glowing white as people left their cards, starting to walk after him and towards the government buildings.

Then came the sound, a loud crash as someone big came barelling through the traffic, flipping the cars out of the way while laughing loudly. The ones that caught a good look at him could see a large man, standing at least 10 feet tall, clad in what appeared to be grey armor, stylized like a triceratops, including a large helmet that mimicked that of a triceratops' head: A large flat shield, a pair of horns at his forehead, and a small horn on a part of his helmet over his nose. His eyes were hidden behind black lenses that connected directly to the helmet, while his mouth was left visible. The rest of his armor was the same dull grey as the helmet, consisting of several armored plates interconnecting along his body. He seemed to be running with little rhyme or reason, instead seeming to cause just as much chaos as he could. He didn't seem to care if he hit already empty cars, or cars that still held passengers.

Moments after the man had begun his rampage, a bright light illuminated the sky. A woman in a red costume flew from the sky, leaving a trail of fire behind her as she moved. A white sun symbol at the center of her chest seemed to glow as she sent streams of fire flying randomly across the area around her. The yellow goggles that protected her eyes seemed to reflect the light from her flames as she set whatever random targets caught her sight on fire. The goggles were held in place by a heavy leather strap that went over her short black hair. Fire burning in her hands, she came to a stop, hovering above a rather large group of people. "Listen up! I'm Sunburn, and we're the Upstarts! I don't know how a city like this have been this quiet this long, but that's gonna change! This is our city now! So all of you better start handing over everything you got!" Smart phones were capturing everything already.

What better place to attack than a city with no other villains? Nowhere to step on your toes or take your score? But the Upstarts had made one mistake: While Emerald City was a city without villains, it was not a city without heroes.

Holding up a light blue polo in front of himself to look at it in the mirror Kimo frowned at the helpful salesman, "Bruh I hate shoppin' for interview duds ya know?"  he lamented shoulders slumping slightly.  His attention was drawn by the sudden honking as traffic came to a standstill.  Hanging the shirt back on the wrong rack he approached the window as he watched the zombified masses abandon their cars, "That's no good."  he murmured and glanced back at the attendant who was busily correcting his erstwhile customers misplacement.

Kicking off his sandals he not for the first time lamented not having his aunts instant cover ID and pulled his tank top over broad shoulders dropping it to the floor next to his footwear before pulling the tie from his hair and stepping out toward the street as cars began flying.  Catching a sedan who's unlucky occupants hadn't escaped the rampage he set it lightly on it's wheels holding a finger to his lips, "Run through there, go outta the back."  he advised pointing to the store he'd just stepped out of.  Kanunu  stuck two fingers in his mouth to let out a piercing whistle, "You just remember you ask for everything."  he boomed as he got the 'Upstarts' attention.  The big hawaiian kicked over a nearby fire hydrant and boud to the top of an abandoned car setting himself in an almost dancelike pose readying himself.

Emerald Spider

Peri had one last visit to make and running late she’d decided it wouldn’t hurt to take a shortcut and swing through the city. But as is usual the city had other ideas, as this was the very moment that trouble starts. For a moment she was tempted to just swing on by and let someone else deal with it, but she knew she couldn’t ever do that. Her mother's lessons were just to strong in her.

She lowered herself down on a strand of quantum filament until she was inline with the two villains.

“Hi there, if your in charge I’d like to register a complaint about someone leaving around super villains who are creating a ruckus!”

Friday afternoons were normally a bit slower at Silberman's Northwest, or at least they were up in the main store. Downstairs in the cafe, however, things were jumping. The live music and delicious caffeine-based drinks were a big hit with the University Hill crowd, and it was only 4 pm! The store's manager, Gretchen McDaniels, had jumped behind the bar to help knock out a few mochas when someone shouted to turn on the TV over the small music stage. At the sight of the chaos on the Riverfront, Gretchen drew a long sigh.

"S###."

Turning to Callie Ann, the other barista, she told her to borrow a Merge from upstairs for backup, and quickly excused herself to change.

Soon an armored figure wrapped in silver and black was floating over the Riverfront, a bird-like mask covering the upper half of her face as a cloak billowed behind her. Never one for witty banter, she simply called out to the so-called 'Upstarts'.

"Hey ###holes! Stop throwing cars!" Then she raised a gloved hand to acknowledge the two other heroes. "Hey!"

Sunburn paused in mid-air, a huge grin crossing her lips. "Man, you guys are just crawlin' outta the woodwork, huh? Must be boring here, if you're just waiting around for some real villains to show up! Hey, Metamind, Dinostroyer, show these guys a good time!"

Metamind, the man in blue, looked up at Sunburn for a brief moment, before turning his attention to the heroes. He raised his right hand, pointing towards Emerald Spider and Kanunu in a sweeping motion. Without a word being spoken, ten of the people that had left the cars broke away from the rest. Three headed towards Emerald Spider, four towards Kanunu, and the last three quickly surrounded Metamind himself. They all moved quickly, running and starting to kick and punch at the heroes as they reached them. About ten others kept heading towards the stores.

'Metamind'? Oh no, he was a f###ing telepath! What did Lynn sat about these? "Break their concentration as fast as you can, especially if they're using people as puppets." Well, time to finally try out her red grenades in a hostage situation!

Floating directly over the telepath, she called down to him, more than a little cocky. "Hey, Metamind! Eat this!" A glowing egg-like mass of light appeared in her hand, and she dropped it straight down at her target. Once it was at his head level, she squeezed her thumb like she was holding a detonator, and there was a blinding flash of light that ignored the telepath's victims but sent it's full power into his body.

Emerald Spider

Shaking her head Peri cleared her senses, luckily like her claimed she’d had a thick skull. Quickly figuring out what had happened she figured out her next move.

“Bystanders, please thats so tacky! Your ot villain enough to face us yourself?” is what a long shot but it never hurt to try.

Instead of waiting for an answer she made the finger movements to fill the area the mind-controlled were in with the sticky quantum filament. It wouldn’t hurt them but it would slow or stop them from carrying on. And just in case she gained a little height because her skull wasn’t that thick.

The quantum filament was quite effective, it seemed. With everyone gathered as close as they were, the Emerald Spider managed to catch almost everyone, with just a few stragglers at the edge of filament making it out.

Sunburn flew above, flying even higher, making her best attempt at getting out of range from any of the heroes on the ground. She laughed loudly at the sight of the people caught in the Emerald Spider's web. "Oh, come on, that's just nasty, Spider-Chick! Those people are gonna clean webs outta their hair for weeks now!" Flames gathering in her hand, she threw a fireball towards Shrike. The ball went far, barely even getting close, drawing a curse from the burning woman.

"Comin' thru!" The Dinostroyer charged forward, trampling through anything in his path as he went straight for Kanunu. Head lowered, he tried to skewer him with the horns on his costume if possible, or at least push him far back with force of his charge.

Aiming a jet of water from the broken hydrant Kanunu ensured the wide blast of flame didn't ignite anything where it struck has sanguine movement guiding the stream in a graceful arc.  Of course his attention might have been better spent on the rampaging Dinoman.  The charging Dinostroyer slammed into him with bone crunching force knocking the wind out of him and sending the big man stumbling back off the car to land ignobly on his back staring up at the sky as he tried to once again gather his faculties.

"You a  rude boy you know that?"  he grumbled as he tried to get his eyes to focus again.

"Gah!" Metamind obviously wasn't a fan of actually getting into combat like this, when the Shrike's grenade exploded. He took a step away and shielded his eyes, but otherwise, he was unharmed. Still, his concetration slipped. Or maybe he just didn't care about the civilians nearby, now that the Emerald Spider had caught most of them in her net. "You'll pay for that!" If anything, Metamind had the super villain clichés down pat.

While the people he had previously controlled to attack the Emerald Spider started complaining about being stuck in webbing, he placed his left hand's index finger on his temple, while pointing with his open right hand at the Shrike. A swirling light blue beam shot from his hand, but missed her and went wide into the sky.

Well that was disappointing! However, if nothing else, Gretchen had succeded in annoying and distracting a violent douchebag; it was the little things in.life you savored. Still, he was still up and shooting, his aim blew. Deciding to give the loser a taste of his own medicine, she formed her hand into a finger pistol and fired a bright red blast of light back at him.

"Bite me, fu- oh, damn it!"

Her shot went wide.
