Toondependence Day!

Recommended Posts

Freedom Oil Station, Broadway
3rd September 2018, 19:30

Robberies in Gas Station were something that, alas, happened in all cities but in a city like Freedom City it was more common for them to be done by more colourful costumed villains. But even in this city, it was an unusual case.

Sitting on the counter was a figure around four foot tall, a literal cartoon character, dressed in a typical '20's flapper and apparently in black and white.

"Come on Beth the fuzz'll be here soon!" her accent was a broad stereotypical Chicago drawl

The other, a blonde compared to the others dark bob cut, was trying to stuff notes into a bag which was not easy when your only four foot tall!

It had been a good day. Relaxing a bit before classes at Claremont would start, a few days of freedom in Freedom City, exploring his new home, but honestly, Pan had started to become bored. He had been exploring, he had seen sights, he had been a sight flying around, but he adventure. And well, following the red and blue sirens usually worked out fine for that. The ever present grin on his lips, Pan stayed close enough to follow, at least until he could figure out the trouble himself, at a place that was apparently the "Freedom Oil Station".

He could wait, of course. Figure out what was going on. But that would mean waiting, and he really didn't feel like doing that right now. Having perhaps a minute or two before the police would arrive, he flew over to a window to try and see what was happening inside.

After a few seconds of staring at the strange toon robbers go through there actions through the glass, a voice beside him spoke up.

"They say that it's rude to stare, but I think it’s completely understandable in this situation." the voice came from a rather pale look woman dressed in a suit and wearing sunglasses, even though it was dark.

"I'm Lucy Harker lawyer and superhero, pleased to meet you." she offered a smile and a friendly hand to the young hero "Should we go stop this robbery in progress?"

The pair inside the Freedom Oil Station looked weird. Like they were drawn, not fully human. They were short, but Pan had seen his share of short people in Neverworld. There was something else that made them stand out compared to everyone else Pan had seen here. Their clothes looked very different, even from all the different manners of outfits he had seen in this world, and they didn't seem to have any color at all.

A woman's voice brought him out of his thoughts. Pan hadn't even heard Lucy approaching before she was talking besides him. Not something he experienced often. Still, she made her intentions known, and she seemed nice. He accepted her hand, shaking it firmly, but gently. Pan had never understood why anyone would want to show their strength by trying to crush another's hand. "Hello Lucy Harker, I'm Forever Boy. I was just about to get started, if you want to join me?"

Pan floated over to the door and slowly pushed it open. With a smile, he waved his hand and a thick golden fog began to fill the store. Both he and Lucy would be able to see through it.

As the golden mist settled across the Gas Station the Toon woman on the counter looked around

"Something going on Beth we better be ready." from her tiny purse she pulled out a massive Thompson like machine-gun

"Not those pesky super-heroes Vera?" she stood up, barely looking over the cover holding a massive animated shotgun, her accent was more Brooklyn than her fellow

"We ain't going to come quietly heroes, you best just let us leave!"

There was a comedy loud sound as the two toom women cocked their respective weapons.

New heroes were always a fun surprise, even though a tiny part of her wished he'd heard of her. Maybe that super school taught her as part of Superhero History? She should pop down and say hello at some point, for now she'd have to do the educating.

"These two looked like there from the Toon Gang, though I've not seen ones like this. We should be careful they operate on toon logic, like that film - which is probably well before your time. If I wasn't ancient I'd feel old!" she gave a broad smile at her own joke

The two bad guys prepared themselves, getting their weapons ready. Pan might not have seen the exact things before, but it was clear what they were. He was about to move in and try to catch them when Lucy explained who they were. The Toon Gang? And they operate on toon logic, from a film? Pan turned to Lucy with a puzzled expression on his face. He had finally seen a movie, so he got that reference at least, but nothing with any toons. At least he didn't think so. The film he had seen had been about heroes in space, fighting against the evil empire that ruled all of space. He had especially liked the man named Han Solo.

He should probably go in, but if they operated on another set of rules than the rest of them, he should know first. "I'm not really from around here. Just what is toons and toon logic?" If they didn't react to any of his tricks he would have to figure out some other way to get to them.

She should really expect heroes not to know about such things, having skipped the last eighty years or so. Still, at some point, she'd have to find a way to show him some classic reels of something like Betty Boop.

"Well, it's difficult to explain! They'll be able to defy physics in strange ways..." realising something she just grinned "Actually they're pretty much like regular heroes really. Just expect that they can throw you a curveball, that is do something completely unexpected."

Boy, this was more difficult than she expected, they need to sit down and help him catch up with the 21st Century.

Right then. Like regular heroes. Pan wasn't quite sure what made the difference between a regular hero and an irregular hero, but he would do his best anyway. The golden mists had spread far enough inside the store that it would be almost impossible for the two thieves to see anything, so Pan nodded at Lucy, then slowly floated in through the mist, doing his best to be as silent as he could. The mists were already there, so he could just as well try to confuse them a bit too, maybe make this a bit easier, just in case they did something that he didn't expect.

The two toon Gangster Molls had by now jumped up onto the counter brandishing there comically oversized weapons as they scanned the fog filled room. On hearing what she must have thought was the heroes the girl with the Thompson, Vera apparently pulled the trigger.

The barrel literally pulled back as it spat out a series of bullets, each with a little set of eyes and a determined grin, like you saw on those old aircraft noses. They whizzed through the air, slowing as they passed the two heroes, before hitting the wall behind them. All the bullets hit and merged until only one remained, that fell to the floor with little-winged bullets circling its head.

"That the kind of thing I was thinking off." finally a bemused Lucy offered looking down at the stunned bullet.

Pan looked back at the bullet that was now lying on the ground, with little winged bullets flying around it. This was so weird. He wanted to respond to Lucy, but no sense in giving his position away yet, as he started floating through the golden mists he had created. Get closer, but not too close. He had no idea what they would be able to do if he got up close, after all. Still, it was the perfect time for him to do his little Mind Wave trick. A smile played over his lips as he targeted the two toons. Confuse them, maybe hope they start squabbling a bit amongst themselves. That would work well.

Against Forever boys effect the eyes of one of them, Vera they'd called her, seemed affected as her eyes began to swirl in a hypnotic pattern. Then she turned to the other, Beth, and fired her Thompson dancing around with the weapon but still somehow managing to hit.

"Whatcha do that for?" the other toon seemed hurt, but not it appeared physically.

"One of the 'hero's did the mind-whammy on me!"

"You idiot we're immune to stuff like that!" to that end Vera slapped Beth apparently bringing her to her senses "Here let me show you how's it done."

She turned and fired both barrels of the shotgun which with unerring accuracy, or maybe even luck, struck Lucy.

Lucy looked down at the slug flattened against jacket, the hole it's caused already knitting back together. She looked down more in surprise than shock, her undead flesh wouldn't even bruise and would quickly recover from almost any injury.

"I guess then it's my turn then!"

Not having any weapons of her own she instead had to rely on those given to her, moving with some grace other to the two toons and striking on with an impressive punch. The response isn't quite what you'd expect Beth when down only to spring right back up to her feet apparently not harmed at all by the assault!

Those guns were so loud. And so so strange. Pan quickly flew to the side, making sure that Lucy wasn't in his line of fire. Pan could only stare as Beth bounced straight up again after the punch. He could really see what she had meant about about them doing something completely unexpected. And they had just thrown his mind wave off like that. Fine then, they had eyes and ears. And Pan could try to take those out, at least. Since Lucy was dealing with Beth, he would try for Vera.

"Is all the villains of this world like these two?" Lucy had said that he should expect things like for regular heroes, but this seemed weird, even compared to the people he had met here.

A blazing firecracker glowed in Pan's right hand as he spoke. It would go off in a moment, so he threw it straight for Vera, getting ready for the flash and the bang.

The fireworks went off filling the little store in bright lights in the eerie fog that filled the places thanks to Pan's machinations. All except Vera who's eyes began to spiral as she looked at the lights.

"Ooooh pretty lights!" as she spoke she swayed slightly as if hypnotised by the effect.

"They've put a whammy on you Vera, snap out of it I need help with this pasty looking one here!" Beth gestured towards Lucy if it wasn't obvious to everyone in the room.

Vera, for now, was however completely fixed on the light, even if they were now in her head, paying no attention to anything else going one.

“Let ‘em have it!”

Despite being blind Vera seemed to be unconcerned, both her and Beth spraying the area with there cartoon gunfire. Neither of the heroes were hit but various fixtures and fitting were harmed spraying the area with various foodstuffs. The shop was going to need some serious TLC after this was over.

“Did we get ‘em?” Vera asked confidently

“Erm, Not quite!” Beth replied looking slightly nervously into Lucy’s coal black eyes. “We might need a new plan.”

With her undead fleshes unusual qualities she wasn't concerned with the bullet's flying around, not that it apparently mattered with the toon's gangsters accuracy. Stepping forwards with a smile she gave Beth another solid punch to the face, though it was pretty obvious that their toon flesh, or whatever you’d call it, was just as tough as her own. Or at least able to quickly recover.

“We may need to consider another plan here.” she said to her own ally.

She still looked confident at her foe as her brain, her main weapon here, considered options.

Unreal bullets, like something animated come to life, fill the area. Not that any of them come even close to Pan, but he is still concerned. They don't appear to have any care for who might be hit by the crossfire. A frown on his face as he slips by the bullets, Pan can only agree with Lucy. Just hitting them didn't seem to be doing much. Toon logic, indeed.

So, something else. A trick, perhaps? Or at the very least, trying to frustrate the strange villains. He called out to the one that Lucy had hit. Teaming up would prove to be the best option here. "Hey, you! The one that can see! You want to see some fireworks too?" He begins to form Pixie Dust in his hands, trying to make it seem like another batch of fireworks.
