  1. Summer 2023 They were there for various reasons. Echohead and Predator had been contacted through their connections to the US government; Mirror Knight had been reached through a third-party contact. But they were all here in what was typically the main conference room of the Wharton State Forest's main ranger office, having been contacted by the New Jersey state police and asked to gather together with one of their top agents. There were light drinks and snacks and a fine view of thickly growing pine trees outside, a legacy of the nature heroine Fleur de Joie's recent visit to the park. But so far, nobody had come to join them yet.

His is ugly to the point of borderline dysmorphia. He does have a certain sense of style, however, wearing expensive suits and sunglasses (he loves black) History: Umberto was always the bullied kid at school. The first to get beaten up, the last to get picked at a team. He was short, weedy, and bald since birth and had a faint Italian accent (his family moved to Freedom City when he was six). This was compounded by being smart and by having a doting, overbearing mother (who, ironically, was a hairdresser). Umberto grew up always feeling like he was supressing something. He had a knack of understanding people and their motivations which he put down to intuition. He made a reasonable business selling plants and garden appliances in his shop. Until, one day, a retired AEGIS agent came into his shop to purchase some plants for his retirement home. Umberto had a flash of paranoia, and then…bang! He was inside the agent’s head. It turned out that Umberto was a psychic who had repressed his powers all his life. His paranoia had forced his unconscious powers to the conscious! He was debriefed by AEGIS, and it was then both AEGIS and Umberto saw opportunity. AEGIS would have much to gain from Umberto's power Equally, Umberto he had always harboured dreams of being a spy, a secret agent, or a superhero, but being a 5’5” weed with no training and an overbearing mother, he had no opportunity. So, Umberto would get basic training, equipment, and clearance. And AEGIS would make sure they kept an eye on him and call on him if they needed his special skills. Personality & Motivation: Echohead has always wanted a life of adventure and excitement and this is his primary motivation. However, he also has a lot of sympathy for the underdog, and cannot abide bullies or autocrats (whilst also being terrified of them). He is an introverted yet friendly man, but conceals a lingering sense of low self-esteem. He is particularly fond of food and has a love of plants, flowers, and gardens. He relaxes in his own garden and grows his own vegetables. Powers & Tactics: Echohead can “steal” other peoples thoughts or neurological functioning. He can make people ignore something, paralyse parts of (or all of) their body, or forget skills. As well as “deleting” such abilities (albeit transiently), he can “copy” someone into his head, getting their skills and mental abilities. The copy does linger as an “echo” which can be distracting or even (if a strong personality) dangerous. Echohead will usually try to win conflicts by selectively disabling his targets. He prefers to avoid conflict if possible, and will use whatever subtleties he can to do so. Due to a combination of psychic sensitivity, fear, and experience, Umberto is unconsciously able to anticipate conscious attacks from human (or those with human-ish minds) and evade them. This does however make him vulnerable to aliens, animals, robots, traps etc, as well as human (ish) adversaries that have mental concealment or are acting unconsciously / unpredictably (for instance, a bezerk rage or confused). Umberto utilises high tech AEGIS equipment to compensate for his lack of physical skills or abilities. He wears bulletproof clothing, and carries an AEGIS “Variable pistol” if he needs to combat psychic-resistant enemies. Power Descriptions: Echoheads psychic powers are not visible or detectable. His “Variable Pistol” has a variety of different appearances depending on description. The pistol itself is black, fairly lightweight, but rather bulky (like a handgun with a rugby ball sized barrel). Complications: Ugly Umberto is outstandingly ugly. He is not good at making good first impressions, although he has a very memorable face that easily stands out in a crowd, hard to forget, and tricky to disguise. Puppet: Any “Echo” stored in his head has the lingering will of the original. For the most part this is, at worst, distracting. However, progressively strong-willed copies might limit the use of their skills at a critical time, or cause him to freeze or tic or speak inappropriately Exceptionally strong copies might even take control of Umberto for a while. Loose Tongue: When nervous, Umberto tends to gabble. He might reveal information, or say the wrong thing, or speak his mind completely inappropriately! Migraines: Umberto has a tendency to suffer intense migraines. Bright light and stress can set them off, and render him virtually helpless. Sunglasses help, and he takes medication to limit them, but of course he can be without sunglasses and medication and there is plenty of stress around. Sometimes, mental strain (such as extra effort) can trigger them. Easily Shaken: At the end of the day, Umberto is a coward; or, more precisely, he has grown up being bullied and downtrodden and he can easily revert to this mindset. Skilled intimidators or psychologists could have a field day manipulating and scaring him – despite his high will save and sense motive skill. A bully will still make him tremble. Calibration needed: whilst Echohead can "copy" physical skills (or even feats) like acrobatics, climb, and swim using them is another matter. If the copied body is of significantly different size shape or strength, it will take him a little practice to "calibrate" the acquisition of this skill to his own body. This could take a minute for minor differences, or a few hours for major differences in body shape. If he does not fully calibrate, he would not be able to use the skill, or even worse, automatically fail even basic checks. GM December 10th, 2018, 5.25 AM, five minutes to destination Mars Orbit, Solar System, Orion Arm, Milky Way Galaxy, The Universe, inside of a Pegasus-class spaceplane Light-speed travel was great. With the coordinates set, all systems nominal and nothing especially likely to be between the Pegasus and Starshell Castle, there was little to do but wait and consider what the little band was up against. The pilot and three passengers had a lot of skillsets between them; young adventurer, amateur mystic and philanthropist Veronica Danger, anxious AEGIS Eyespy agent Echohead, otherworldly wanderer Forever Boy and materials-mimic Facsimile, all of them brought something unique to the mission. The mission itself was simple enough: get into Starshell Castle, don't get caught, find out and do as much damage as they can before escaping. Of particular interest were the Nightstone, supposed power source of Blackstar and his followers, and anything to suggest how they could move between Starshell and Earth without the Lighthouse satellite detecting them. That last was of especial importance, since the refitting of the satellite and its augmentation with alien technology included some of the best sensory systems the Coalition could provide. If there was a flaw being exploited, some basic incompatibility, or even some wholly-unknown power at work, it was vital information. Outside there was nothing to see, but on the inside of the windows was a projected simulation of the solar system blurring by. If you looked too long, you started to see patterns in the stars.

  5. GM December 10th, 2018, 4.54 AM Star Island Space Control Center, Atlantic Ocean, USA All around the heroes, the Space Control Center buzzed with activity. People rushing by in uniforms of every shade, shouts, the rattle and roar of machinery, the feel of the floor and air vibrating with the sheer noise passing through them. Above was a clear, chill Atlantic sky, a few stars twinkling despite the blazing lights of the offshore aerospace facility. Over the base's cacophony, a voice cut through. "...And that's where we're at. Thanks to the cooperation of these two, we have a lock on Blackstar's most likely location by tracking the signature of his Shadow Bands. Faster-than-light approach in a Pegasus should let you get close to the base without raising the alarm, and if our readings and the information from his followers is accurate, his castle should be minimally-staffed." To his credit, USAF Col. Randall Austin didn't look enviously at the sleek navy blue spaceplane taxiing into the launch sling. The flickering decade and change had thickened the man a shade around the waistline, and the grey in his hair fair outnumbered the thickets of coarse black, but the last hour and a half of explaining a lot of information clearly and concisely proved his mind was as sharp as ever. "If you can apprehend Blackstar, that would be great. But if you learn how he and his followers are transporting to Earth without the Lighthouse detecting them, that's far more important. Now, are there any questions before takeoff?" Behind his glasses, Randall beamed hopefully.

Labs The day was winding down, the light was starting to wane, and the people working at one of the premier technological application centers on Earth were starting to think fondly of home. By now the horrors of the Terminus Invasion had already begun to fade from all but the hardest-hit. But the fact remained: while there was a sense that the Terminus might not make such a move again, there were other dangers in the omniverse. So far the day had gone famously. The dimensional conduit prototype, code-named DR(pronounced, naturally, 'door') was in full working order, the odd-looking man from AEGIS hadn't gotten in the way while 'checking for mental leaks', and the representative for the prestigious Danger Foundation had been nothing but helpful with the finer details of avoiding dangerous interaction with the forces she unaccountably referred to as 'magic'. The support staff had been on top of their game today, especially thanks to a newcomer with an ease around the strange materials they worked with that confounded even veterans of the Labs. Regardless, there was only a little clearing up to do and everyone would be off the clock. So it was with a certain regret that one of the walls exploded inward from a shower of dark energy, followed by two odd-looking men in Atom Family Adventure-like uniforms of black, silver and purple with armbands that radiated power. "Hello!" the finned one said merrily "Please leave this to us, Terresi!" "I'm Electrum Eagle. No prey escapes me." The winged one snarled, knocking the room off its feet with a wave of his gauntleted hand, emitting a punishing shockwave that made the nerves scream. "And I'm Platinum Porpoise! Take a seat!" A snap of his webbed fingers and a boyish smile heralded a great seething wave of bluish-purple energy that started flashing across the room, pinning everyone in its path with coils of otherworldly darkness! However, even as they headed for the great arch of the DR, they were unaware that someone had followed them ever since they first materialized in Freedom City...

For the stats of your opponents from Blackstar's Blackguard, consider them to be PL12 versions of this sheet by Troll, with the amendment the powers come from a Hard-To-Lose Device: Electrum Eagle can fly under his own power, and Platinum Porpoise is Immune to Suffocation by all descriptors.
  9. The sun settled slowly beneath the horizon, though the spires of Freedom City had already blocked its light from reaching the miserable Fens for hours before. The Fens were not normally an upbeat part of Freedom City, and many of the city's upstanding residents would really have rather ignored the Fens' existence. This evening, however, something had changed - there was a low buzz of tension in the air, an excitement edged with true terror that not even the Fens' residents could really believe was there. "-you heard about the new club?" "You mean the-" "-hear they give out-" "That's crazy, no one would-" "- my brother's best friend can shoot fire out of his -" Rumors filled the streets of a new means of getting what the people of the Fens deserved (whatever that was). A club - or maybe a bar, no one was really quite sure - that offered honest-to-god superpowers in the forms of drinkable beverages. Dozens of rumors filtered throughout the Fens, and even beyond, into Freedom City's better-off neighborhoods. Something was happening in the Fens, and it could spell chaos for the Fens (or the rest of the city) if it went untouched!
