  2. In Brief: Moonstone meets Poison Ivy, with a dash of Venom, and side helpings of Elle Woods and Blanche Devereaux. Character: Persephone Power Level: 12 (Built as PL10) Tradeoffs: None Power Points: 186/189PP Unspent Points: 3 Alternate Identity: Camellia Blume, M.D. Identity: Secret Legal Status: USA citizen with no criminal record Birthplace: Vibora Bay, Florida Base of Operations: Vibora Bay, Florida Residence: A rented house in Atwater Occupation: Psychiatrist (self-employed, private practice) Affiliations: University of Florida (alumnus), Delta Delta Delta (alumnus), Florida Board of Medicine (licensed physician), American Medical Association (board-certified psychiatrist) Family: Younger fraternal twin brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephew, parents, several aunts, uncles, and grandparents DESCRIPTION Age: 30 (Date of Birth: 1989) Apparent Age: 30 Gender: Female Ethnicity: Anglo-Germanic Caucasian American Height: 5’10” Weight: 140 lbs. Hair: Human Form: Platinum-Blonde, Plant Form: Purple Eyes: Human Form: Blue, Plant Form: Purple A friend once described her as “Grace Kelly’s head on Kate Upton’s body”. She has brilliant blue eyes set into a heart-shaped face, framed with a mane of shiny and thick platinum blonde hair which falls down to the top of her thighs. She has the kind of hourglass figure that usually requires aggressive corsetry, and most of her substantial height is in her long legs. Her voice is heavy, breathy, and deeper than most people expect, with a slight Southern drawl. She carries herself with the calm, quiet confidence of someone who’s accustomed to being welcome everywhere she goes. She has a big smile, and it gets a lot of exercise. She has an extensive wardrobe; more than one person has joked that they’ve never seen her wear anything twice. She has personally altered most of her clothes, both to better fit and support her body, and to replace the buttons and clasps with magnets, which allows her to get in and out of them quickly (a trick live stage productions use to cope with frequent costume changes). Her personal style, heavily influenced by the local climate, consists mainly of above-the-knee sundresses in bright colors and floral prints, paired with some kind of ornate sandals, more often than not with 4-5 inch heels that make her tower over most of the people around her. During the couple of months a year where the weather in Vibora Bay dips below 70F, she’ll switch to sweater dresses with higher necklines, swap out the sandals for closed-toes or boots, and add some heavy tights for extra warmth. In more casual settings, she sometimes trades the dresses for crop tops paired with denim short-shorts or short skirts, and on the beach, where she goes every chance she gets, she rocks the bikini. She loves jewelry; pearls are her favorite, and she owns pieces in every color of the rainbow. Outside, she’s rarely seen without both oversized sunglasses, some kind of a large, floppy-brimmed straw or silk hat with a bow or flower on the ribbon, varieties of which she also owns in every color. In professional settings, she wears decorative glasses with clear lenses, mainly in the hope that she’ll be taken more seriously once the “smart people have poor eyesight” stereotype cancels out the “dumb blonde” trope, but also because it gives her another accessory to play with. When she uses her powers, her skin turns green, and her eyes and hair both turn purple. Her hair grows even longer, almost touching the ground, and it takes on a life of its own. The coloration shifts to different shades depending on her mood, and the hair moves of its own accord, suddenly when in response to her emotional state, but otherwise gently floating and swaying as though she were underwater. Her ability to shape plant matter with her thoughts also extends to her own body. She can make plant appendages like vines, thorns, leaves, and roots sprout from her skin, with whatever pigmentation or texture she desires. Her costume is made from such appendages, consisting of thousands of overlapping leaves growing out of her skin, and falling away when she switches back to a human appearance. There's usually a flower in her hair, but that's because it's growing out of her head. She can also release luciferns and their catalyzing enzymes into parts of her body, causing them to glow. She does this most often with her hair and eyes. HISTORY Carmellia Blume’s parents met while they were both students at the University of Florida’s Vibora Bay campus. Her mother was a cheerleader and her father played football. They both stuck around long enough to earn Master’s degrees, hers in interior design and his in engineering. After graduation, she started her own firm, while he went to work for Vibora Petroleum, where he quickly ascended to upper management. By gradually invested in dozens of rental properties and restaurant franchises, in Vibora Bay and throughout North Florida, her parents did their part to maintain their family's wealth for another generation. Her father has been a member of the elite Mahogany Club since before she was born. Carmellia beat her “little” twin brother into the world by a few minutes. She grew up in a Cluet Farms mansion, immersed in luxury and privilege. Her teens and early twenties were a hurricane of private schools, cheerleading practices, cotillions, debutante balls, modeling jobs, and beauty pageants, just like her mother before her. She was the queen of her high school, but she was a benevolent queen, who never tolerated bullying. She attended the University of Florida, a legacy admission, like her parents before her. She joined the Tri-Delta sorority, like her mother before her. She even spent a year studying abroad in Paris, like her mother had at her age. But ultimately, she decided that, while dancing and modeling were fun, they weren't fulfilling. She wanted to spend her life helping people in a more direct manner. So after four years of college, she applied to UFVB's prestigious medical school. It was the first time in her life when she made a real decision, instead of just following in her parents footsteps. The modeling money and pageant prizes she’d saved up took a big bite out of the tuition, so she didn’t have to dip too far into her trust fund. After four years of medical school, she chose psychiatry as her specialty, combining her academic prowess and her social skills to make the world a better place, one person at a time. After another four years, she completed her residency and obtained her medical license. She rented an apartment in Far Weston (separate from the rented Atwater house she lived in), and started her own practice out of it, living off of her trust fund until she accumulated enough patients to make her practice self-sustaining. Camellia kept a garden at home, and her office space was filled with flowers. This caused one of her first patients visible distress. But he wasn't floraphobic. Instead, he seemed to be suffering from auditory hallucinations, or some other delusion. He claimed that one of his wife’s plants was talking to him. No one else seemed to be able to hear the voice, but it was growing louder and more insistent, while not making any sense, and he was convinced it was coming from the purple orchid his wife had brought home a few weeks prior. After a few weeks of talk sessions and a prescription for anti-anxiety medication failed to yield any results, he brought the orchid in question to his session, and refused to bring it back home with him. She didn’t think it would help his recovery to force the issue, so she let him leave without it, intending to return it to him later. The orchid was sitting on the front seat of her car during her commute home. That commute was interrupted when she drove by what appeared to be a mugging or assault taking place in an alley just off the street. She pulled off into the alley, flashed her lights, honked her horn, and shouted that she was calling the police, hoping to scare away the attackers. But the attackers were New Shadows gang members, vampires, and they weren’t mugging their victim, they were feeding on him. They used their superhuman strength to flip her car over, trapping her in the alley. But as they started to drag her out of the wrecked car, she heard a woman's voice inside her mind, and it seemed like time froze. The voice offered Camellia power, the power she would need to survive this ordeal and many like it. But she could only give Camellia that power if they were “bonded”. Camellia decided that, whatever that meant, it was better than letting herself or that poor man be killed, so she agreed. Time started passing again, and the orchid started moving under its own power, shattering its pot and pressing itself against Camellia. The flower somehow phased through her flesh and bone, sinking into her chest. She felt its roots expand throughout her body. It occurred to her that this should have been painful or terrifying or disgusting, but instead it was invigorating. Leaves and bark sprouted from her flesh, covering every inch of her skin. The vampires were shocked when they reached for a human but pulled out a humanoid plant-monster. Their shock gave her all the time she needed. Acting on instinct, she summoned plants to her aid, and they responded. Roots from a nearby tree stretched and snaked through the dirt before bursting bursting up out of the ground, breaking through the concrete like it was glass. The roots hardened into spears and impaled the vampires, who all crumbled into ash. As soon as the danger had passed, the leafy armor dried up and crumbled off of Camellia’s skin. She used her cell phone to call an ambulance for the bleeding man and a tow truck for her totaled car, and she tended to his wounds as best she could while they waited. She told the police that she’d turned too fast into the alley and flipped over, which must have scared away “the muggers”. The wounded man didn’t contradict her. Camellia spent the weeks after the incident telepathically communing with her new symbiote, learning what little the symbiote knew of her own history, and growing accustomed to her new abilities and the changes the symbiote was making to her body. The symbiote had been part of a race of semi-sentient plants engineered and grown as biological weapons by the humans of another Earth in an alternate dimension. That dimension fell to Omega, and this symbiote happened to be on a part of that Earth which wound up floating in the Terminus instead of being annihilated. When a rift opened up near the symbiote during the most recent Terminus incursion into her dimension, she pulled up her roots and let herself fall through. The symbiote offered to separate from Camellia if she so desired, but Camellia refused when she learned that separation would require intensive surgery which could kill both of them. Instead, Camellia decided to cope with whatever changes might come, and put her new abilities to good use, making the world a better place like she’d always wanted to. PERSONALITY & MOTIVATION Camellia's behavior comes from a combination of a naturally big heart and being raised in a semi-aristocratic subculture in which tradition was revered and courtesy was paramount. She strives to always be polite, modest, generous, and forgiving. She hates to see people suffer, even when they deserve it. She’s sensitive to the moods of the people around her, and it’s important to her to make those people as comfortable as possible. Her guiding principle in daily life is “Make everybody feel welcome, and never make anybody feel second-rate.” She greets everyone with a warm smile and an opening for as much small talk as they'd like, and she almost never swears or insults people. When someone else commits a faux pas, she’s far more likely to ignore it or attempt to cover for it than she is to draw attention to it or mock them. She values integrity, both in herself and in others, so she won’t lie to protect people’s feelings, but she will distract, deflect, and omit. Every child gets told at some point “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”, but unlike most children, she took that sentiment to heart, leaving the hard truths for one-on-one sessions behind closed doors. She detests bullying of any kind, and she won't hesitate to step in and put herself between the bully and their victim. She loves social interaction and embraces every opportunity for it. Everyone has a story, and she wants to hear them all. She make a point of maintaining correspondence with all of her family, former school friends, sorority sisters, and coworkers. Once you're part of her world, you don't leave. She remembers every birthday, and she sends hand-written “Thank You” notes for everything. She likes attention, which is fortunate, because she’d get plenty of it whether she liked it or not. She doesn’t demand the spotlight, but she’s very comfortable under it. She’s a hopeless romantic who falls hard and fast both in and out of love. She doesn’t expect or demand old school chivalry, but she’s a total sucker for it. POWERS & TACTICS The symbiotic alien plant which fused with her has transformed her body on the molecular level into an ambulatory plant. Her flesh, blood, and bone has mostly been replaced with cellulose, sap, and wood, and what remains has little value beyond the cosmetic. Her plant tissues are more durable and resilient than her old flesh. Her body engages in photosynthesis, so she doesn’t need to breathe or eat food, though she still does, both for the pleasurable sensation and because she can derive nutrients from it; it’s the equivalent of spreading fertilizer over crops. She can also extend roots from her body down into soil to obtain water and nutrients, but eating and drinking feels more familiar. The diseases and poisons of animals no longer affect her, although certain chemical fertilizers have effects on her similar to those of caffeine or alcohol when she discreetly adds them to her coffee and cocktails (making those drinks toxic for anyone else in the process). Like an old tree, her aging process has stalled to the point of being imperceptible. With an infusion of sunlight, her body is able to mend most wounds instantly, and even grievous injuries will heal in a matter of hours instead of days or weeks. However, as a plant, she is more vulnerable to dehydration and extremes of temperature, her tissues are more flammable, and defoliants and herbicides which would be harmless to a human will kill her in a matter of minutes. Through the symbiote, she can psychically detect, communicate with, animate, control, and alter plants. She can make them move and act on her behalf, and she can transform them extensively, shaping them like clay, greatly increasing or decreasing their size, strength, and resilience, and making them sprout flowers which then burst open with psychoactive pollen or latex. She doesn't strictly need to take any physical action to alter or control plants, but she uses physical gestures to help herself focus. In battle, she looks like she's dancing or conducting an orchestra. The transformations she uses most often reverse themselves as soon as she stops exerting the mental effort to maintain them; permanent changes require greater effort (power stunts for Continuous/Lasting or Independent versions of her powers). Nearby plants even respond to her unconscious desires and survival instinct, moving out of her way, or moving and stretching to protect her, blocking or swatting aside incoming attacks. Her ability to shape plant matter with her thoughts also extends to her own body. She can make plant appendages like vines, thorns, leaves, and roots sprout from her skin, with whatever pigmentation or texture she desires. In battle, she often grows an extra layer of thick bark over her skin, harder than rock. She can release luciferns and their catalyzing enzymes into parts of her body, causing them to glow. In a battle, engaging directly with supervillains is her last resort. Her first priorities are healing the wounded, and using her Create Object and Move Object powers to protect bystanders and even other heroes, either by shielding them or by moving them to a safe place. Even when she does fight directly, she attempts to restrain or incapacitate while doing as little harm as possible. Technically, she can create vines to whip or strangle, or thorns to cut and stab, either from her own body directly or by altering other plants, but she’s so loathe to do so that she leaves that to occasional power stunts, instead of buying any Damage-based alternate powers for her Plant Control array. COMPLICATIONS Accidents: Her powers are potentially destructive, especially when used indoors. Tree roots might burst up through floors or streets, while tree branches and stretched bushes come crashing through windows and walls. The GM can give her a Hero Point if the use of her powers causes a setback. Perhaps she triggers an effect like Environment Control which hinders her in the rest of the fight. Or maybe she endangers bystanders, and she must try to rescue them while the villain is still attacking. Alternately, the GM can give other PCs a Hero Point in exchange for making her attack powers affect her allies as well as the villains. For example, if she were to use her Fatigue power to spray a villain with a plant-derived sedative, and another hero then used a melee attack against that villain, the GM could declare retroactively that the Fatigue effect had acquired the Contagious extra, and some of the sedative was transferred from the villain to the melee-attacking hero, who now has to save against the Fatigue effect as well. Honor: She will always choose to help bystanders, even if it means letting the villain get away. She always uses the minimum force required to incapacitate a villain, and she will accept any surrender immediately. Even though she’s good at sniffing out lies, cunning villains can manipulate her by telling her what she wants to hear. The GM can give her a Hero Point if this causes some sort of setback, such as a penalty on a Sense Motive check or a free surprise attack against her. Hopeless Romantic: Friends and family have joked over the years that she "falls in love with every man she meets". The GM can give her a Hero Point in exchange for giving her a circumstance penalty on opposed interaction skill checks like Bluff or Diplomacy, or saving throws against effects like Emotion Control (Love), if her opponent is a man with a high Charisma score, interaction skill bonus, and/or the Attractive feat, or if the player and GM agree that he’s “her type”. The GM can also give her a Hero Point if she suffers a setback on account of being distracted by attraction, such as being surprise attacked. Finally, the GM can give her a Hero Point in exchange for forcing her to make a saving throw or skill check to avoid being Dazed or Fascinated, as if the attractive character had and used those feats, even if he did not. Medium (Plant Control): The GM can give her a Hero Point in exchange for arbitrarily deciding that there are no plants close enough for her to use her Plant Control array. At the GM’s discretion, this could 1) deprive her of the power entirely, 2) make it operate at a reduced power rank, since she would have to harvest material for the plant structures from her own body, or 3) make it acquire the Tiring or Side-Effect flaw, for the same reason. Normal Identity: If a villain were to restrain her or otherwise render her helpless, then they could surgically (or violently) remove the symbiote plant from inside her chest. If this were to happen, then all the changes it has made to her body would gradually revert, and she would lose all her powers and become a normal human again. Both she and the symbiote would suffer from withdrawal, and either of them could die, especially the symbiote. If the GM ever caused such a horrendous thing to occur, then giving her a Hero Point would be the least they could do. Phobia (Fire): Fire is one of the few things which can cause her serious harm, and she has an instinctual fear of it. The GM can give her a Hero Point in exchange for forcing her to make a Will save against an Emotion Control (Fear) effect. The GM is free to assign the effect whatever power rank they choose, but it should take into account the size and intensity of the fire (the effective Damage rank) and her proximity to it. Power Loss (Immunity): There are some circumstances in which her Immunity to Suffocation would not apply, such as being caught in a vacuum, or being immersed in water too dark and deep for any sunlight to trigger her photosynthesis. Similarly, if deprived of both food (either animal food or nutritious soil) and sunlight, then she will begin suffering from starvation, despite her Immunity to it. The GM can give her a Hero Point if she is caught in such circumstances and begins suffocating or starving. The GM can also give her a Hero Point when a villain scores a critical hit or a Sneak Attack against her, and suppress her Immunity to Critical Hits, allowing the villain to keep their damage bonus. Responsibilities: She has a large, active social network of family, school friends, sorority sisters, and former coworkers. She’ll drop everything to come to their aid. The GM can give her a Hero Point if a request for that aid comes at the worst possible time. She also has standing appointments with paying clients at her psychiatry practice four days a week, with the potential for emergency calls during off hours. The GM can give her a Hero Point if her day job somehow interferes with her hero work. Secret (Identity): The GM can give her a Hero Point if a potential reveal of her identity causes her some sort of setback, or if a villain learns her identity and then creates a setback for her by going after her friends, family, and/or patients. Soft-Hearted: She doesn’t like to see anyone suffer, even villains. As good as she is at telling truth from lies, she’s still a sucker for a sob story. The GM can give her a Hero Point in exchange for a penalty on checks like Sense Motive to discern the truth behind a wounded-gazelle gambit. Where others may see “A hard man doing a hard job, willing to make the tough choices and do what’s necessary”, she sees only callousness and cruelty which she cannot abide. She’s as likely to come to blows with “grim dark avenger” vigilantes as she is with actual supervillains. The GM can give either her or another PC a Hero Point in exchange for forcing her either to not take a certain action which would harm another person, or else to take a certain action which would prevent harm to another person or end harm they were already enduring. For example, if a villain appeared to already be restrained, incapacitated, or severely weakened, and another PC were still attacking them, or interrogating them in a violent or threatening manner, then the GM could invoke this complication, force her to put a stop to it, and give either her or the other PC a Hero Point. A skilled seamstress, she has personally altered most of her clothes, both to better fit and support her body, and to replace the buttons and clasps with magnets, which allows her to get in and out of them quickly (a trick live stage productions use to cope with frequent costume changes). In more casual settings, she sometimes trades the dresses for crop tops paired with denim short-shorts or short skirts, and on the beach, which she visits every chance she gets, she rocks the bikini. Her hair grows even longer, almost touching the ground, and it takes on a life of its own, gently floating and swaying as though she were underwater. Her ability to shape plant matter with her thoughts also extends to her own body. She can make plant appendages like vines, thorns, leaves, and roots sprout from her skin, with whatever pigmentation or texture she desires. Her costume is a leotard made from such appendages, consisting of thousands of overlapping leaves growing out of her skin, and falling away when she switches back to a human appearance. There's usually a flower in her hair, growing straight out of her head. She can also release luciferns and their catalyzing enzymes into parts of her body, causing them to glow. She does this most often with her hair and eyes. HISTORY Camellia Blume's family has roots in the east side of Vibora Bay going back at least as far as her great-grandparents on both sides. Her family are all wealthy, highly educated professionals, with real estate holdings across north Florida. Camellia beat her “little” twin brother J.B. into the world by a few minutes. She grew up in a Cluet Farms mansion, immersed in luxury and privilege. Her teens and early twenties were a hurricane of private schools, cotillions, debutante balls, modeling jobs, and beauty pageants, just like her mother before her. Like her mother before her, she was the queen of her high school. Unlike her mother, she was a benevolent queen, who never tolerated bullying. She attended Sinclair University, a legacy admission, like her parents before her. She joined the same sorority her mother had belonged to. She was a cheerleader like her mother before her. She even spent a year studying abroad in Paris, like her mother had at her age. But ultimately, she decided that, while dancing and modeling were fun, they weren't a fulfilling career. She wanted to spend her life helping people in a more direct manner. So after she graduated from Sinclair, she applied to UFVB's prestigious medical school. At first, her parents did not approve, though they knew well enough to cloak their objections with polite euphemisms. But as far as they were concerned, a mostly-black school on the west side of the city, even a nationally renowned one, may as well have been another planet. Camellia stood firm. In 22 years, it was the first time she ever made a real decision for herself instead of just following in her parents footsteps. Her parents refused to pay for it, and even threatened to cut off her trust fund. But she'd saved enough of the money she'd made from a decade of modeling jobs and pageant prizes to take a big bite out of the tuition, and she was willing to take out loans to pay for the rest. The idea of their little princess taking on debt horrified them more than the idea of her living in Weston or going to school with black people, so they relented. After four years of medical school, Camellia chose psychiatry as her specialty, combining her academic prowess and her social skills to make the world a better place, one person at a time. After another four years, she completed her residency and obtained her medical license. She rented an apartment in Far Weston (separate from the rented Atwater house she lived in), and started her own practice out of it, living off of her trust fund until she accumulated enough patients to make her practice self-sustaining. Her refusal to charge patients more than they could afford, or to limit her clientele to the wealthy, slowed that process considerably. But the attackers were a pack of vampires affiliated with the New Shadows gang, and they weren’t mugging their victim; they were about to feed on him. Their claws and fangs couldn't pierce her bark-armor. Acting on instinct, she summoned plants to her aid, and they responded. Roots from a nearby tree stretched and snaked through the dirt before bursting bursting up out of the ground, breaking through the concrete like it was glass. The roots hardened into spears and impaled the vampires, who all collapsed into piles of ash. She looks human on the surface, but beneath the skin, her flesh, blood, and bone has mostly been replaced with cellulose, sap, and wood. Her plant tissues are more durable and resilient than her old flesh, her aging process has slowed considerably, and she can completely regrow any lost body parts. In addition to nourishing her, exposure to sunlight also super-charges her body's healing process. With an infusion of direct sunlight, her body is able to mend grievous injuries that would normally take hours or days to heal in a matter of minutes. The diseases and poisons of animals no longer affect her, although certain chemical fertilizers have effects on her similar to those of caffeine or alcohol when she discreetly adds them to her coffee and cocktails (which also makes those drinks toxic for anyone else). However, as a plant, she is more vulnerable to dehydration and extremes of temperature, her tissues are more flammable, and defoliants and herbicides which would be harmless to a human will kill her in a matter of seconds. But if she is killed, a piece of her corpse can be re-planted like a cutting, and, if it is able to take root and it gets the water, nutrients, and sunlight it needs, then it will eventually regrow her entire body. Through the symbiote, she can psychically detect, communicate with, animate, control, and alter plants. She can make them move and act on her behalf, and she can transform them extensively, shaping them like clay, greatly increasing or decreasing their size, strength, and resilience, and making them sprout flowers which burst open to unleash sedative latex, or psychoactive pollen which can cause hallucinations and render the victim susceptible to suggestion. She doesn't strictly need to take any physical action to alter or control plants, but she uses physical gestures to help herself focus. In battle, she looks like she's dancing or conducting an orchestra. Most of the transformations she causes reverse themselves quickly once she stops exerting the mental effort to maintain them; permanent changes require greater effort. Nearby plants respond to her unconscious desires and survival instincts, moving out of her way, or moving and stretching to protect her, blocking or swatting aside incoming attacks. Her first priorities are healing the wounded, and using her Create Object and Move Object powers to protect bystanders and other heroes, either by shielding them or by moving them to a safe place. When she does fight directly, she attempts to restrain or incapacitate her foes while doing as little harm as possible. She can create vines to whip or strangle, or thorns to cut and stab, either from her own body or by altering other plants, but she’s so loathe to inflict direct harm that she refuses to do so in all but the most desperate of circumstances. Enemy (New Shadows): The pack of vampires Camellia destroyed on her first night as Persephone were affiliated with the New Shadows gang. The gang doesn't know that Camellia is Persephone, but they have figured out that Persephone is the one who killed their comrades. They haven't put a bounty on her, because, as a matter of honor and reputation, they want to be the ones to avenge themselves. But they are offering a reward for information about her and her whereabouts. The changes the alien symbiote has made to Persephone's biology make it unlikely that vampires would derive nourishment from her bodily fluids or that they would be able to transform her into another vampire, but they do intend to make her suffer and die for her affront against them. If repeated attempts to capture or kill her fail, then they may swallow their pride and seek outside assistance. If the gang got word of her presence in a particular place, then they could show up and make a bad situation even worse. Fame: Between helping to bring down "Croczilla" during Hurricane Dorian, spearheading the subsequent relief efforts, and becoming one of Vibora Bay's official municipal defenders, Persephone is becoming quite the local celebrity. The GM can give her a Hero Point when being recognized inconveniences her in some way. For example, a civilian trying to meet her or get a picture of her may put themselves in danger (intentionally or not) during a crisis situation, distracting her from the task at hand. "Good Thing You Can Heal!": Persephone's ability to regrow lost limbs and come back from the dead is practically an invitation for the GM to maim and kill her. Since her powers do not require the use of her hands, and her Flight effect allows her to move without using her legs, if the GM intends to give her a Hero Point in exchange for the loss of limb, then they should impose some other negative condition upon her to reflect the trauma (see pages 170-171 of Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition for a list of options). However, if her Weakness to defoliants and herbicides is what kills her, then she should not get a Hero Point, since she already got power points for that drawback. Her Resurrection power requires a week to take effect, so killing her will effectively remove her from the current story, rendering a Hero Point reward irrelevant, unless the other PCs have access to an effect which could speed up the process, such as Boost, Resurrective Healing, or Dimensional Movement to a plane where time passes more quickly. A GM can, however, give her a bonus Hero Point at the start of a different story if she was removed from the current one in such a manner. Both she and the symbiote would suffer from withdrawal, and either of them could die, especially if the symbiote was removed violently. Power Loss (Immunity): There are some circumstances in which her Immunity powers would not apply. These circumstances are too rare to merit a Power Loss drawback or a Limited/Medium/Source flaw. She still ages, but more like a tree than a human, so she has Immunity to Aging. The GM can temporarily Nullify that Immunity, give her a Hero Point, and force her to save against an effect with the "Aging" descriptor. She is Immune to Critical Hits by default because, while her body is not truly homogeneous, she has so few vital areas that the chance of hitting one of them is not statistically significant. If an enemy scores what would normally be a critical hit against her, or hits with an attack which would normally gain bonus damage from Sneak Attack, then the GM can decide that she has been hit in one of those vital areas, temporarily Nullify her Immunity, give her a Hero Point, and force her to save against the increased attack DC. She is not affected by the diseases or poisons of animals, but she is affected by the ones which target plants. But while those are not rare in real life, they rarely come up during play. If the GM exposes her to a plant disease or a poison which affects plants, then they can give her a Hero Point and force her to save against them. She may suffer the effects of Suffocation if she is caught in a vacuum, or immersed in water too dark and deep for any sunlight to trigger her photosynthesis. Similarly, if deprived of both food (either animal food or nutritious soil) and sunlight, then she will begin suffering from starvation, despite her Immunity to it. The GM can give her a Hero Point if she is caught in such circumstances and begins suffocating or starving. She is not Immune to Thirst at all. Power Loss (Regeneration): She has Vulnerability drawbacks for several damage descriptors. When she suffers Damage with one of these descriptors, the GM can give her a Hero Point and act as though the incoming Damage effect has the Incurable power feat, effectively Nullifying her Regeneration power and forcing her to recover at the normal rate with the normal amount of required rest. Responsibilities: As one of Vibora Bay's official municipal defenders, Persephone has not just a moral obligation to defend the city, but a legal one as well. Camellia, meanwhile, has a large, active social network of family, school friends, sorority sisters, and former coworkers. She’ll drop everything to come to their aid. The GM can give her a Hero Point if a request for that aid comes at the worst possible time. She also has standing appointments with paying clients at her psychiatry practice four days a week, with the potential for emergency calls during off hours. The GM can give her a Hero Point if her day job somehow interferes with her hero work, or vice versa. 4. Persephone Alternate Identity: Camellia Blume, M.D. Base of Operations: Vibora Bay Concept: "Moonstone meets Poison Ivy, with a dash of Venom, and side helpings of Elle Woods and Blanche Devereaux" Table of Contents Allies, Associates, & Enemies Costume & Appearance Current Role & Hooks Design Notes Headquarters History Personal Life Personality & Motivation Powers & Skills Timeline Reputation Allies, Associates, & Enemies Allies Brother & Sister-In-Law Camellia's younger brother J.B. is her fraternal twin, born a few minutes after her. He entered the workforce, got married, and started a family several years before Camellia did, only staying in school long enough to get his MBA. He and his wife, Pamela, have two small children, Abby and Alan. Pamela was Camellia's sorority sister and best friend in college. Camellia set the two of them up in the first place. She adores her niece and nephew, and the feeling is mutual. Parents Camellia Blume’s parents, Lena and Bernie, met while they were both students at Sinclair University. Lena was a cheerleader, and Bernie played football. They both stuck around long enough to earn Master’s degrees, hers in interior design and his in engineering. After graduation, she started her own design firm, while he went to work for Vibora Petroleum. He started as an engineer, but he quickly ascended to upper management. Her family also owns dozens of rental properties and restaurant franchises, in Vibora Bay and across north Florida. Her father and grandfather have both been members of the elite Mahogany Club since before she was born. Camellia is their little princess and there's nothing they wouldn't do to indulge her, but she tries her best to stand on her own two feet. Associates City of Vibora Bay As one of Vibora Bay's official municipal defenders, Persephone works directly with the city government. A small handful of city officials, including Mayor Richenda Barker, even know her secret identity. Extended Family Camellia maintains contact with the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of her family. Professional Contacts & Sorority Sisters Camellia was one of the vice-presidents of her chapter of the Omega Beta Gamma sorority at Sinclair University. She worked as a model and pageant contestant in her teens and early-to-mid-twenties, including during her year in Paris. She spent four years at the University of Vibora Bay School of Medicine, the most prestigious medical school in the state of Florida, and another four years completing her psychiatric residency at the world-renowned UFVB hospital. She's maintained all of her contacts from those worlds. Her Christmas card list includes models, photographers, newspaper and magazine editors, fashion designers, university professors, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, and dozens of women who went on to become and/or marry some of the wealthiest and most influential people in every walk of life on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Enemies The New Shadows The pack of vampires Camellia destroyed on her first night as Persephone were affiliated with the New Shadows gang. Costume & Appearance A friend once described Camellia as “Grace Kelly’s head on Kate Upton’s body”. She has brilliant blue eyes set into a heart-shaped face, framed with a mane of shiny and thick platinum blonde hair which falls down well below her waist. When she uses her powers, her skin turns green, and her eyes and hair both turn purple. Her hair grows even longer, almost touching the ground, and it takes on a life of its own, gently floating and swaying as though she were underwater. She is a skilled seamstress, an asset she had already made extensive use of on her normal clothes before she ever got superpowers, altering them to better fit and support her body. After she became a superhero, she altered them further, fastening them with magnets to make them quickly and easily removable (a trick stage productions use to facilitate frequent costume changes). Her superhero costume is a leotard composed of thousands of overlapping leaves growing out of her own skin. When Camellia turns into Persephone, she triggers the pigmentation changes, grows the leaves, and snaps her civilian clothing off. She has the whole process down to less than a second. When it's time for Persephone to turn back into Camellia, she just snaps her civilian clothing back on, changes color, and lets the leaves fall off. They quickly dry out once they're no longer attached to her. There's usually a flower in her hair, growing straight out of her head. She can also release luciferns and their catalyzing enzymes into parts of her body, causing them to glow. She does this most often with her hair and eyes. In her civilian life, Camellia has an extensive wardrobe; more than one person has joked that they’ve never seen her wear anything twice. Her personal style, heavily influenced by the Vibora climate, consists mainly of above-the-knee sundresses in bright colors and floral prints, paired with some kind of ornate sandals, more often than not with 4-5 inch heels that make her tower over most of the people around her. During the couple of months a year where the weather in Vibora Bay dips below 70F, she’ll switch to sweater dresses with higher necklines, swap out the sandals for closed-toes or boots, and add some heavy tights for extra warmth. In more casual settings, she sometimes trades the dresses for crop tops paired with denim short-shorts or short skirts, and on the beach, which she visits every chance she gets, she rocks the bikini. Current Role & Hooks Even when she was an independent superhero, Persephone tried to make herself available for any crime-fighting or disaster relief opportunities which presented themselves in the Vibora Bay metropolitan area. Now that she's one of the city's official municipal defenders, she has not just a moral obligation to do so, but a legal obligation as well. As far as she's concerned, there's no problem too small for her to help with. At one point she literally used her powers to bring a stuck kitten down from a tree, and she still considers it her best superhero moment. She lacks the power to cover a larger region, and even within the city, her mobility is limited. She can command local plants to ferry her around like a sort of relay race of ski lifts, but at only 25MPH, it's usually faster for her to just take her car. She would rather be loved than feared. She always tries to resolve a situation peacefully, and if things get violent, she always uses the minimum force required, and she's quickly becoming known for that. Even when she was an independent hero, she would gladly stick around long enough to make any bystanders feel safe, and to talk with and assist rescue workers, police, and the media. Design Notes Persephone is an exercise in taking tropes normally reserved for villains and making a hero with them instead. Her color scheme is the green/purple/orange combo colloquially known as "Secondary Color Villain", to contrast with the "Primary Color Hero". She's a blonde, blue-eyed white girl from the South. She used to be a cheerleader and a sorority sister. Her powers include Emotion Control, delivered by what is basically poison. She's a traditionally feminine and unashamedly sexual adult woman who wears a revealing costume and fights indirectly through what are basically summoned minions. Normally, all of those things would scream "villain", or, at best, "Character it's OK to kill", in any genre. Persephone is as far outside my own wheelhouse as I've ever strayed as a role-player, an exercise in embracing and playing with tropes I used to avoid like the plague. She's both a Southerner and a "basic white girl", two types of people whom I used to hate, mock, and write off at first glance. I also used to look down upon any feminine and/or sexually alluring RPG characters, dismissively calling them "GM's Girlfriend PCs". Persephone was born out of the cultural and emotional evolution I've felt happening both in the larger geek culture and in my own life. A lot of us have been doing some growing up and waking up all at once to the nuanced truth that the declaration of all things soft-feminine to be "bad" is rooted in misogyny. What's "bad" is making one thing, whether it's one type of femininity or masculinity or anything else, the only available option, and forcing people to adhere to rigid stereotypes which don't fit them. Tomboys shouldn't be mocked or punished for not being girly-girls, but the reverse is also true. We're waking up to the fact that the whole idea of the "Mary Sue" character archetype in RPGs and genre fiction is rooted in that same misogyny, so, in defiance of that, I went ahead and gave Persephone several "Mary Sue" traits, like the infamous purple eyes. Similarly, while it's a problem when every female character in a work is forced to be titillating for an assumed hetero male audience, it's not an innately bad thing for a female character (or anyone else) to be "sexy", and cheesecake can be fun without being creepy, although everyone has their own boundaries when it comes to that sort of thing. Headquarters Camellia lives in a rented two-bedroom house in Atwater, one of the better neighborhoods in the worse half of the city. She could afford to live in Easton, where she grew up and where the rest of her family lives, but she's trying to save money, dip as little as possible into her trust fund, and achieve some semblance of independence. Like most Floridians, she has a small pool in the backyard, and both the back and front yards are dominated by her extensive flower gardens. At any given time, there are also multiple vases filled with fresh flowers in every room inside the house. She uses her second bedroom as a mixed home office, sewing room, and walk-in closet. The walls are covered with framed photographs of family and friends, occasionally broken up by art prints, mostly Monet and Van Gogh. She also rents a studio apartment in Far Weston, not as nice as Atwater but far from the worst neighborhood Weston has to offer. She uses the apartment as an office, so that she doesn't have to see clients in her home. It's her attempt to force some work/life balance, and to keep a professional boundary between her and her patients. The apartment-office is as filled with flowers as her home. It is furnished with a couch and several plush chairs surrounding a coffee table, a desk where she keeps her notes and her work computer locked up, and a mini-refrigerator she keeps stocked with a couple pitchers of sweet tea she always offers to her patients. Framed copies of her university and medical school diplomas and other credentials adorn the walls, along with some more Monet and Van Gogh prints. So after she graduated college, she applied to UFVB's prestigious medical school. But the attackers were a pack of vampires affiliated with the New Shadows gang, and they weren’t mugging their victim; they were about to feed on him. Personal Life Camellia invests a great deal of time and effort into maintaining her extensive network of family, school friends, sorority sisters, and coworkers (both from her modeling days and from the teaching hospital where she completed her residency). Once you're part of her world, you don't leave. She calls and sends cards for every birthday and anniversary, and she sends hand-written “Thank You” notes for everything else. Her psychiatry practice and superhero activities take up most of what time remains. When she somehow manages to squeeze a few more drops out of her schedule, she likes gardening, sewing, cooking and baking, and making occasional trips to the beach or to go out dancing at night clubs. She has no regrets about putting her personal life on hold for the sake of her career, but it's not on hold anymore. She has an active profile on ErosUnlimited, where she's hoping within the next few years to find a guy to settle down with, get married and have kids. Powers & Skills Camellia Blume is a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatric medicine, fully licensed to practice in the state of Florida. The symbiotic alien plant which fused with her has transformed her body on the molecular level into an ambulatory plant. She looks human on the surface, but beneath the skin, her flesh, blood, and bone has mostly been replaced with cellulose, sap, and wood. Her plant tissues are more durable and resilient than her old flesh, her aging process has slowed considerably, and she can completely regrow any lost body parts. Catchphrase: "Have a slice!" Theme: Garbage: When I Grow Up Alternate Identity: Skirris Sandwinder of the Silver Shadow Birthplace: Haasaa Prime, The Nest Residence: Coalition Victory Station Base of Operations: Coalition Victory Station Occupation: Aristocrat, Praetorian, Affiliations: Praetorians, Lor Republic, Queenmother Neshath Family: Nasselth Sandwinder (mother), Ashmet Scourtail (father), several dozen sisters and brothers, Description: Age: 18 ( calendar) Apparent Age: N/A Gender: Female Ethnicity: Northern Dune Height: 7' Weight: 250lbs Eyes: Green Hair: None Resembling the naga from Hindu legend, Skirris is a brawny brown and black reptilian alien with a humanoid upper body and snake's lower body. While her head is blunter and more ape-like than a snake or Lemurian's, she is covered in golden-brown scales patterned with red, lacks ears and hair, and has a mouth full of curving fangs and a forked tongue. Like most adolescents of her species she hasn't fully developed the complex network of facial scales that give the haasaan their identification. On duty she wears a silvery costume from head to tip that doubles as a space-suit and armor, off duty she wears all the frills, bands, bangles and bizarre mixes of galactic fashion she can get her hands on. History: Two thousand years ago, in service of the now-vanished Delaztri Empire, there was an army of specially-gifted citizens called the Praetorians. Among their number was the Silver Shadow, a serpentine ghost who could pass through light-years as easily as millimetres and fell a hundred enemies on a hundred worlds before the first could fall. She was a conduit for that mysterious region known as hyperspace, able to bridge material gulfs through a benign mutation. She is thought to have died in the war against the Communion and was lost to history on all worlds but her home, Haasaa Prime, home of the haasaan, a golden-green jewel of deserts and luscious jungles. On that same world two millenia later was born Skirris Sandwinder, who quickly showed signs of having the same talent for manipulating hyperspace. Unfortunately, growing up in the royal estates, surrounded by the wealth and privilege of her rank and with the power to escape any situation she didn't want to be in, the kind of nobility and courage that marked her predecessor evaded her. Quickly boring of her home, by the age of seven she began wandering off to find trouble. By the age of ten she had graduated to petty mischief and the Queenmother of the haasaan knew that only worse was to come. She ordered the secret construction of a device to restrict Skirris's powers, and call her back to the Nest if she strayed. To the young girl, who all her life had been placated and coaxed with the awesome destiny that was her birthright, it was a sign that all along everyone had been lying and just wanted to control her. No longer able to simply leave her classes, the young aristocrat sullenly got back into studies and attending court lessons like all her noble siblings. It was in her thirteenth year that she figured out how to channel hyperspacial energy to empower her strikes, forcing a hasty refit of the Dam. By seventeen however, Skirris had seemed to calm and mellow, showing real interest in the wider world, especially the exotic cultures of other species. The Dam was relaxed, on the condition that she not do anything that had necessitated its existence. The rule proved depressingly easy to break, as every other month the teenaged noblewoman would systematically empty every bar on Haasaa Prime of its liquor and any local alpha female who figured they stood a chance in a fight with her. There was never death or permanent injury, but the constant reports of their misbehaving super-being and the seeming impossibility of correcting Skirris's behaviour outside of force made up for that. Even her parents were at a loss of how to deal with her. The outbreak of the Incursion War, and the desperate struggle for survival in the early days of the Communion attack, proved to be the solution. Despite her lack of experience Skirris was packed off to help haasaan colonies evacuate and get valuables and artifacts out of the growing warspace. Torn from the stifling confines of one planet, one people, and flung into a myriad others, the novice Silver Shadow saw for the first time how small and petty her lifelong-tantrum had been, the wonders and adventure that lay beyond her familiar star. Rushing through the shifting silence of hyperspace, saving innocent lives and priceless treasures from destruction, Skirris found her true calling. However, the war ended, she was recalled to Haasaa Prime, and though the Queenmother formally deactivated the Dam in light of her efforts and unexpected valour, she was forbidden from wandering outside the system until a Republic scientific study could be done on her unusual genetics and she had selected suitable mates. Realizing the years that now stood between her and any chance of getting to live like she had during the war, Skirris sank back into her old ways of boozing and barfights, enlivened wih the occasional scandalous dalliance with some obviously unsuitable male. At last, her parents and the Queenmother had had enough. With the opening of the ranks of the reestablished Praetorians, Skirris was promptly offered as a potential member, nobody more surprised than her when she was accepted. Presented with a specially-crafted Silver Shadow suit she was quickly packed off to the Praetorian base at CoVic Station, cut off from her family, her parents' wealth and prestige, everything she had known since childhood, out into the wild black yonder of infinite terrors and evils. Her life had begun at last. Personality & Motivation: Skirris is an unsophisticated party girl, a thuggish and loud-mouthed extract of a rigidly hierarchal and class-based society. While her name has no weight outside the Haas system, she's never short of confidence or expectation of obedience, especially from men, who she still has trouble taking seriously as leaders or fighters. Her naive ignorance about the world is compounded by an overweening self-regard for herself and her abilities, to the point where she all but reflexively challenges the decisions of anyone she sees as a rival. Lacking in social skills besides a well-honed ability to lie with a straight face, Skirris is largely concerned with getting what she wants when she wants it. Having lacked true peers for most of her life, she has trouble emphathizing with others' problems, though she does have a fierce sense of loyalty to anyone who treats her even a little like she sees as her due. Preferring bars to battlefields and roaming to reconnaissance, as Hyperslice she nontheless puts herself aside, plunging into battles and contests of power she has no chance of winning, both to avoid the nagging doubt of "Could I?" and to make herself into what she knows she was born to be: the greatest hero in all space. Powers & Tactics: Able to dart in and out of battlefields on multiple planets, when fighting alone Skirris prefers to rush in, get her punches into the enemy, and rush out before they can retaliate. When with allies, she constantly looks for ways to tilt the odds in their favour, though her inexperience limits what she can really do even with all her power. Power Descriptions: Hyperslice channels the forces underlying hyperspace, the intersitial dimension commonly used for travel by space-faring species. With it she can hurl herself across the cosmos by opening gaps or lanes to her destination, redirect energy and impacts directed at her into hyperspace, or just turn herself into a cosmically-fast brawler. Whenever she uses her powers, her body is suffused with a shifting silver aura, and in flight she leaves a trail of exotic particles that in some atmospheres create dazzling auroras. Complications: Amazing Traffic Hazard: Sending dangerous things into the most-used transit dimension in the known omniverse is hardly an infallible or safe strategy. Bar Boa: Local watering holes are good places for information and fun, but also good places to get into needless trouble or attract unwanted attention. Skirris doesn't care about that last, yet. Blowing through life: If it even kind of sounds like a good time, Skirris is there. Challenger: Hyperslice must prove equal or superior in all challenges or contests, no matter how improbable. Got Dam: The device created to nullify her powers and transport her back to Haasaa Prime is currently deactivated and partially disassembled. With the right know-how, that can easily change. Easy Mark: Skirris is horrifyingly easy to mislead. Got Something Ancient On My Scales: In the course of ferrying prehistoric artifacts and heirlooms, Skirris could have exposed herself to any number of things, from Preserver nanites to Hierarchy biomoulds, Delaztri energy reformers or the mystic crystal Siphons of Sirrion. Motivation: Living up to her and others' expectations of herself. Responsibility: Helping other Praetorians. Rivals with her boss: Hyperslice has an irrational and utterly pointless combatative relationship with Paradigm, leader of the Praetorians. Rivals with ANY boss: That extends to almost anyone in authority, no matter how earned it is or how good the authority figure. The Replacement: There's more going on with the first Silver Shadow's disappearance than anyone knows. Sucker for a good tail: Surrounded by exotic, fascinating aliens, Skirris is willing to overlook a LOT in someone if she thinks he's pretty. Legal Status: In the Lor Republic, a non-citizen permanent resident, granted refugee status and legal asylum. In the Stellar Khanate, a non-citizen fugitive, wanted dead or alive, with a state-sponsored bounty. Base of Operations: None. Operates throughout the Milky Way galaxy. Residence: None. Nomad. Occupation: Mercenary, Unskilled Laborer Affiliations: The Fryxus (extinct species) Family: Ghojma (Former nursemaid, adopted mother), Ghojma's husband and their biological children (Step-family), Biological parents, siblings, and extended family (all deceased) DESCRIPTION Age: 23 (Date of Birth: 1996) Gender: Male Species: Fryxus Height: 7ft (2.14m) Weight: 325 lbs. (147kg). Horns add another +30 lbs. (14kg), for 355 lbs. (161kg) total. Skin: Blue Hair: Blue Eyes: Orange, with horizontal rectangular pupils Kanemu is a humanoid ram with bright blue skin and fur who stands head and shoulders above most humans. His species evolved from even-toed ungulate herbivorous herd mammals similar to Earth's sheep, particularly the North American Bighorn. His facial features are a sort of halfway point between a human and a sheep. His nose and mouth area is snout-like. His nose is wide and angled downward. His eyes face forward like a human, instead of to the sides like a sheep. He wears his hair long and wild. His entire body is covered with a layer of soft, fine wool. His hands and feet are similar enough to those of humans that he has comparable manual dexterity and can wear shoes. Similar to Earth's sheep, with their two large toes on each foot, his hands have two large fingers and a thumb, while his feet have two large big toes. Like a sheep, he has long, pointed ears, which lay horizontally, unlike the vertical orientation of human ears. He has a small, vestigial tail, less than a foot long, covered in the same fur as the rest of him. It hangs down toward the ground. His loincloth usually obscures it. His head is adorned by a massive rack of curved horns. Like those of a ram, his horns have two layers, a living bone core surrounded by a keratin shell. The outer layer is basically compressed hair, and re-grows over time. The horns are so heavy they account for nearly ten percent of his body weight. As a strict herbivore, his teeth are all incisors and molars. He does not have any canine teeth. The front half of his mouth only has incisors on the bottom, with just a flat bony ridge above/opposite them. His blood, like his skin and fur, is also blue in color. As a side-effect of the electromagnetic energies his body generates, stores, and channels, it is warm to the touch, and when exposed to air, it glows softly. He wears a bright red belted loincloth, and nothing else. When his personal protective magnetic field is active, his body is surrounded by waves of multi-colored light similar to the Aurora Borealis of Earth. When he uses his magnetic power to control metal, globes of heat shimmer and refracted light in every color of the spectrum appear around his hands, and bolts of electricity arc up and down his arms. A similar aura may appear around the metal object he is manipulating. When he hurls bolts of lightning, they are twin bolts which spiral forth in a double-helix pattern. HISTORY The Fryxus were a race of fascist humanoid sheep who lived on Ku'unum, the fourth planet in the Harsaf star system, in the independent border territory between the Lor Republic and the Stellar Khanate. Several of the planets orbiting Harsaf were home to other sentient races, most of whom had progressed technologically to the level of routine interplanetary travel, but not yet interstellar travel. The Fryxus had evolved the ability to generate and control powerful electromagnetic fields, which gave them a significant military edge over their neighbors. They used this edge to repeatedly attack, plunder, and enslave those neighbors. After the Star-Khan's disastrous 1987 defeat at the hands of Daedalus and the Lor Republic, he spent years rebuilding his armies and his empire. By the early 2000s, he started to pick lopsided fights against inferior enemies, to regain the momentum of interstellar conquest. In 2003, he set his sights on the Harsaf system. He sent emissaries to Kuunum, offering to help them conquer the other planets in their system once and for all in exchange for submitting to the rule of the Khan. The Fryxus sent back a short reply, "Come and make us," punctuated with the heads of the emissaries. Furious, the Khan ordered Iyato, one of his greatest generals, to "Make an example of them." Within the year, she did. With their electromagnetic powers, a frontal assault on the Fryxus would have been extremely difficult, even for a technologically superior navy. The Fryxians could literally pull the Khan's battleships out of orbit and crash them into the ground, or into each other. Iyato found another way to break them. Through precise calculation and manipulation of celestial phenomena, she triggered a gamma ray burst from a black hole which scoured Kuunum of all atmosphere, oceans, and life, killing most of the Fryxus in one rotation of their planet, which was now a giant lump of charcoal. Iyato's fleet followed up with sustained orbital bombardment, and finally, she landed troops and siege equipment onto the planet surface. They obliterated every structure that was still standing, reversed every instance of civil engineering down to filling in the smallest irrigation ditches, and wiped away every sign that civilization had ever existed on Ku'unum. A minority of Fryxians were scattered about the other worlds of the Harsaf system, maintaining colonies they had established at gunpoint. But the people those guns were pointed at resented the Fryxus more than they did the Khanate. The other races of the Harsaf system accepted the Khan's rule and rose up against the Fryxian survivors. Fryxian culture was its own worst enemy when faced with a ruthlessly pragmatic enemy like Iyato. She exploited their tendency to value honor and glory over victory or survival, luring them into disadvantageous battles which quickly became massacres. Obsessed with their own supposed racial superiority, the Fryxus had kept detailed genealogical records, which Iyato's spies had obtained in the year leading up to her assault, and in his hands, those records became a most wanted list. Lucrative bounties were placed on all the Fryxus. Iyato's plan took a year to set up, but once executed, she reduced the Fryxian population from billions to fewer than a hundred in a matter of weeks. The few dozen who remained were far too few for a stable or sustainable breeding pool. The Fryxus were genetically incompatible with any other known species, a fact which they had taken pride in but which now assured their extinction. Most of the refugees, Fryxian and otherwise, who tried to flee the Harsaf system were intercepted by Iyato's blockade. Kanemu was only 8 years old when the Khan wiped out his people. His nursemaid, Ghojma, was not a Fryxian. She was a slave, like 90% of the population of Kuunum. Kanemu only survived because Ghojma looked at him and saw a child instead of her oppressors. She was one of many refugees who fled the Harsaf system, and one of the few who succeeded, smuggling Kanemu with her. Khanate ships eventually detected them and gave pursuit, and would have caught and destroyed their ship, had a certain Lor admiral with a renegade streak not violated her orders and flown her command carrier into neutral space to intercept and rescue them. The admiral in question was later demoted to captain, but also given commendations. The few surviving Harsaf refugees were given asylum and settled in Lor space. Ghojma continued to raise Kanemu as her own child. She married a Lor man and had children with him as well. Her new husband owned and operated a ranch, which created instant and lasting friction between him and Kanemu, since slaughtering livestock and eating meat were both taboo among the Fryxus, practices they had started wars to suppress among other races. When Ghojma and her new husband had children of their own, Kanemu felt even more out of place and in the way, despite Ghojma's best efforts. The quiet, peaceful life she created with her new family just didn't feel like home to Kanemu. For all he knew, he was the last of the Fryxus. He felt a duty to preserve their memory, and he couldn't do that on a farm. He started calling himself "Dirge," a mission statement as much as a name, and he left Ghojma behind to wander the galaxy in search of glory for his people. PERSONALITY & MOTIVATION Kanemu has accepted that his race is doomed to extinction, that he may already be the last of his kind. He has decided that, since they will not live on biologically, he must make them live on in song. Dying in battle was the highest honor any Fryxian could aspire to. Kanemu's goal is to die in the most glorious and heroic manner possible, so that tales of his death will endure in the myths and legends of other races after his has finally passed on. Having lived in exile since he was a child, he has as child's understanding of his people, seeing them only as brave heroes who fell against a more powerful foe. He lives by a personal code of honor which is adapted from a half-remembered, idealized version they never actually lived up to. He values courage, honesty, and strength. He keeps his word, pays his debts, and takes a straightforward approach to life. He revels in battle, and in battle, he seeks out the most powerful, "worthy" foes. Like the rest of his people, he does nothing half-way. He doesn't speak when he could shout. He doesn't open a door when he could kick it off its hinges. He relies on brute force, and if it doesn't work, then he assumes that he just wasn't using enough of it. The Fryxus were descended from herd animals, and their society was organized into "herds," analogous to "clans" in human cultures. While they fought for dominance among themselves as much as they fought with outsiders, their social bonds meant a great deal to them. Fryxians exchanged a great deal of physical affection to reinforce their social bonds. When they weren't head-butting each other, they were petting, licking, and cuddling. Kanemu feels starved for touch, and a great inner sorrow at his lack of a herd. But as much as he craves a new herd, he will be slow and cautious to accept one. POWERS & TACTICS Like all of his people, Dirge can perceive, generate, and control electricity and magnetic fields. He has a specially adapted lobe in his brain, and specialized glands and organs in his body, similar to those of Earth's electric eel, platypus, or cockroach, only many orders of magnitude more sensitive and powerful. This allows him to hurl bolts of lightning, and manipulate metal at a distance. He can lift, throw, rend or crush metal from a great distance as if he held it in his hands, and as if he had the strength of a god. He is not limited to ferrous metals; as a living electromagnet, he can use an electrical charge to magnetize even non-ferrous metals. He can use these powers to attack foes from unexpected directions, by sending metal projectiles flying at them from odd angles, conducting electricity through floors, walls, or ceilings before making it erupt into the air, or causing either metal projectiles or bolts of lightning to ricochet before hitting his foe. He can generate a magnetic field around his body powerful enough to repel even non-metal projectiles and energy blasts. He often gains enhanced mobility by standing upon a piece of metal and then using his power to hurl it through the air, carrying himself along for the ride. He can stick to metal structures, or buildings with metal frames, as if he were a spider, and he can change the matter state of a metal barrier from solid to liquid, allowing him to pass through it. There are countless other applications of his electromagnetic control, but Dirge, like his people, lacks the imagination to use them to their full potential. His belt buckle contains a generator which creates an environmental force field around him, specialized for operating in the vacuum of space (though it may also allow him to operate on certain hostile planets). When possible, he prefers to fly out into space and fight directly instead of from inside a ship. If Dirge is deprived of his electromagnetic powers, or the materials with which to use them, then he is still a 7ft tall beast-man with a reinforced skull and a rack of horns that accounts for 10% of his total body weight. Like Earth's sheep, his people have evolved reinforced muscles and bones in their head, neck, and shoulders, which protects them from concussive trauma. His skill in both marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat, while far from world-class, would assure him a place among the elite special forces of any mundane army or police force he deigned to join. COMPLICATIONS Accident: Dirge has more raw power than he does control over it. He's prone to overkill. The GM can give him a Hero Point and declare that the use of his power has created a new hazard which he must drop everything to deal with. Alternately, he may cause some sort of accident which acts as a Complication for another hero. Alien Catnip: Dirge doesn't know it yet, since they don't grow on his home planet, but beets (specifically, the beet root) have an effect on Fryxian physiology similar to that of psilocybin mushrooms or lysergic acid diethylamede on humans. If he consumes beet root, he will experience hours of intense visual hallucination, distorted perception of time (impairing reaction time and hand-eye coordination), and euphoria. The GM can give him a Hero Point if he consumes beets unexpectedly and this has an adverse effect on his performance in combat or other stressful situations. The specific penalties or conditions he suffers while under the influence are up to the GM. Always Chaotic Evil: None of the other races who had the misfortune of sharing the Harsaf system with the Fryxus liked being conquered by the Star-Khan, but they still considered it an improvement over their previous circumstances. As far as they're concerned, the Fryxus were monsters, and they'll tell anyone who'll listen. 90% of the population on Kuunum when it was destroyed were non-Fryxian slaves, innocent bystanders whose deaths are blamed as much on the Fryxus as on the Khan. The GM can give Dirge a Hero Point if he meets someone familiar with his race's true history, and that knowledge (be it firsthand or otherwise) causes them to react to him in an inconvenient or hostile manner. Asskicking Equals Authority: Disputes among the Fryxus were usually settled with head butts. The GM can give Dirge a Hero Point to force him to interpret another character's conduct as an insult or a challenge, which can lead to penalized or failed interaction skill checks, nonviolent situations turning violent, or other inconvenient outcomes. The GM may force him to make a Will save to resist the urge to retaliate against the perceived slight, or may simply dictate that he does retaliate. Alternately, the GM can give another character a Hero Point and force them to make a contested interaction skill check to convince Dirge that he misinterpreted the situation, or that he needs to suck it up and move on. Honor Before Reason: Dirge's honor, and the reputation of his people, means more to him than his life. A glorious death is his ultimate goal. The GM can give him a Hero Point to force him to take a course of action which would be courageous, honest, straightforward, and glorious, but also foolish, rash, or suicidal. The GM may force him to make a Will save to resist the urge, or simply dictate that he gives in to it. Alternately, the GM can give another character a Hero Point and force them to make a contested interaction skill check to convince him otherwise. Jabba Table Manners: Like Earth's sheep, Fryxus are a ruminant species, which is a fancy way of saying that their digestion process involves eating their food, then vomiting it back up and eating it again. The GM can give Dirge a Hero Point when his biological needs run counter to the etiquette practiced by those around him or otherwise make them uncomfortable, which can, for example, give him a penalty to an interaction skill check, or cause him to fail it automatically. Alternately, this can be a Complication for another character, who will suffer a penalty or automatic failure to their check. Momma's Boy: Ghojma was his nursemaid throughout his childhood, and his surrogate mother after his people were wiped out. He only survived because she smuggled him out of Khanate space, at great personal risk. He would do just about anything for her. The GM can give Dirge a Hero Point and declare that Ghojma requires his aid at the worst possible time, or that her presence somehow makes a situation far less convenient than it would otherwise be. Motivated By Fear: A GM can give Dirge a Hero Point and suppress his Fearless feat if the fear effect in question plays on the one thing he does truly fear, failing to die a heroic enough death and leaving his people to fade into obscurity. Price On His Head: Dirge's very existence is illegal in the Stellar Khanate, and the Khan has a standing bounty on all remaining Fryxians. The GM can give him a Hero Point in exchange for bounty hunters showing up at the worst possible moment, or when his status as a fugitive makes travel through Khanate space difficult in some way. Straw Vegetarian: Eating meat is taboo in Dirge's culture. The GM can give him a Hero Point and force him to make an issue out of it when it would be more convenient not to, or at least force him to make a Will save to resist the urge. This can result in penalties to interaction skill checks, if not automatic failure, for himself and for others. It can also make situations turn violent when they would not have otherwise turned violent. Alternately, the GM can give another character a Hero Point and force them to make a contested interaction skill check to convince him to leave it alone. But the Fifty Year Plan, which had somehow not been completed in nearly two hundred years, quickly became obsolete once the first agents were exposed in the early stages of the Communion Incursion three Terran years ago. Like the rest of her race, Ditra had to adapt to a radical new situation, and she was as surprised as anyone else to find herself fighting alongside the 'marks' in what would come to be called the Coalition. But she has always liked the Lor, and never specifically wished them any ill will, so maybe it should have been less of a shock. She served with distinction throughout the conflict, even receiving the grudging respect of members of other races. With the fighting over, Ditra registered herself along with the other more or less law-abiding agents, and looked into finding some sort of gainful employment on CoVic Station; she did a number of odd jobs, including security, labor negotiations and working in the various markets throughout the station. One day she was approached by members of her hive about possibly serving on the Coalition council as a representative for the Nameless; they pointed out that she was a popular agent, and her distinguished war service meant that she was already known outside the hive. After much consideration, she agreed to having her designation placed on the ballot, and was shocked to find that she'd won the election by a significant number; she now suspects there was some sort of tampering that guaranteed her victory. Despite (or perhaps because) of the way she came to her position, she takes it very seriously, and she sincerely wants what's best for her people, even though no one can agree on what that truly is right now. Personality & Motivation: Ditra Fifty-Five was, like all Diplomatic units, designed, bred, cloned, assembled, trained and programmed specifically to be likable, helpful and attractive to the Lor. Yet even if one knows this, it's hard not to like her; she's pretty, warm and charming, and genuinely wants to serve both her race and the Coalition as a whole. She's very much aware of how most races see her kind, and will freely acknowledge their concerns; she knows that she will have to work very hard to earn anyone's trust, and that even then, a single careless word or action can bring it all crashing down. But all is not so serious for this young sentient; she is very curious and loves to learn things, and finds other races and people to be fascinating. She also loves playing the elaborate, massive multiplayer videogames her people design, and spends much of her free time in highly competitive gameplay Powers & Tactics: In terms of offense, Ditra really only has one weapon: the powerful blaster built into her right forearm. But to think this is all she brings to the table is to sell her short; her communication capabilities are considerable, and her databanks hold a tremendous amount of information, which make her an ideal investigator, interrogator or negotiator. Complications: The Nameless Peril: Ditra is a member of one of the least trusted races in the galaxy, and is frequently the subject of considerable prejudice. A Bit of a Snoop: Ditra is both naturally curious and a telepath; she may have a hard time resisting peeking into someone's mind, even if they're a friend. For Love of the Game: Like many Nameless agents, Ditra is a bit of a videogame addict, and may be distracted from time to time by gameplay in her head. Domo Arigato, Mistress Roboto: Though her body contains several biological components, it is still mostly robotic, and thus is susceptible to powers or devices that affect technology. Horrible, Horrible Freedom!: If her centipede-like pilot is ever pulled out of her shell, Ditra would be terribly exposed. A Sense of Duty: As an elected councillor of the Coalition, Ditra takes her duties very seriously, which may lead to moral conflicts over where her loyalties lie. My Resources Are Not Infinite: Though her shell is largely self-contained and can maintain itself for days in the harshest environments, Ditra does still need to occasionally ingest organic material, trace elements and radioactive isotopes from time to time. Too long without these substances will cause her to shutdown or even die. 8. Dol-Druth the Speaker Power Level: 10 (150/159PP) Trade-Offs: None Unspent Power Points: 9 In Brief: Planetary inspector and hive-mind-aided super-mentat with a government mandate. Residence: The Lighthouse. Base of Operations: Earth Catchphrase: "Why is this real?" Alternate Identity: Lor Civic Rotunda(Planetary Inspection Committee Division) Officer Dol-Druth Identity: Public Birthplace: Lor-Dotra, birthing pod cavern in the southern continent Occupation: Planetary inspector, representative of Dotrae. Affiliations: Lor Republic, Freedom League Family: The other eighty billion Dotrae. Description: Age: 46 Apparent Age: N/A Gender: Male Ethnicity: Subterranean(near colourless skin) Height: 7'2" Weight: 300lbs Eyes: Black Hair: None White is his dominant colour, from the pearly, nearly translucent skin to the teeth like chips of pale grey ice. Slender, twitching antennae protrude from the top of Dol-Druth's head, as edgy and irritable as their owner, while large, deep-set black eyes glare out at the world over a broad, broken Roman nose and perpetually-pursed thin lips. His bulky, ungainly body is swathed in an enormous loose suit of good-enough-for-government-work iridescent beige, on which his name and elected titles stream constantly in a shifting collage, the letters warping to make themselves intelligible to anyone looking at them. His voice is a deep, frustrated growl with clipped, sharp syllables even in telepathic communiques. Power Descriptions: When drawing on the collective mental force of Dotrae, Dol-Druth's eyes glow an eerie blue, and anyone with psychic sensitivity can feel the presence of many other, whispering minds suddenly at hand. Anything being affected by these powers similarly starts to glow and emit a low-pitched whine. Dol-Druth tends to gesture in ways mimicking the effect of his powers on their target, lifting his arms to pick up a car or thrusting his hand forwards to throw telekinetically-accelerated projectiles and so on. It is not necessary, but it is an ingrained habit. History: The office of Speaker(originally Voice) of Dotrae was first created around three hundred years ago, when the inhabitants of Lor-Van encountered the hive-mind race during their Great Experiment in empire-building. While they had encountered species of loneminds in the past, the Dotrae were still unused to the idea of any one specific being having any special authority over their manymind, preferring the never-ending psychic debate between each other to make decisions. When inducted into the Lor Empire, however, the visiting generals impressed on the Dotrae the need to have some representative for their people, arguing that in times of crisis snap decisions would need to be made without the benefit of argument, even at the speed of thought. Dotrae considered the matter, found the logic compelling, and presented a then-unknown adolescent girl named Gana-Ley to be their Voice. Since then, what was intended as a means of Imperial control over the Dotrae has grown into a respected and valued position in the Republic. With access to the collective wisdom and psychic might of a race tens of billions strong, Speakers have filled countless specialty roles in government, military and judicial fields. But until an obscure functionary named Dol-Druth no Speaker was ever a planet inspector. Dol-Druth was appointed after his predecessor was uncovered, after being cleared two years before, as the head of a lucrative kidnapping ring "acquiring" test bodies for unscrupulous lab-corps in a sensational exposé that led to the downfall of over a thousand other Dotrae officials responsible for 'screening' their ringleader's thoughts from the manymind. Before that he had performed the thankless work of surveying prospective member races with a kind of principled, rigorously honest and fair bloody-mindedness, and was already notorious for his very strong opposition to the post of Speaker long before the Senator's crimes were public knowledge. That last quality made him a perfect fit. As part of his new duties, Speaker Dol-Druth was required to meet with the more prominent ambassadors and negotiators of the still-weakened republic. While on these rounds he met with a number of the people who had helped lead the Coalition, including an ambassador named Th'emme who had a lot to say about the fringe world of Earth and its incredible inhabitants. What was intended as glowing praise sparked immediate suspicion in the inspector. The tour done, and with the security of border worlds a pressing concern, Dol-Druth decided to clear up the matter himself and asked to make the next scheduled survey of the Sol system and its inhabited bodies. His comrades in the Rotunda were happy to hand off such an unimportant job, and setting out in the basic flit pod that had been his home-away-from-home for decades the voice of his race sped through space to confront this strange world of myths, monsters and madness. Personality & Motivation: Even for one of Dotrae, Dol-Druth is aloof, withdrawn and largely impersonal. While he understands personal rights and privileges, and the need to take more than a broad-strokes view of any people, he abhors the way even others in the manymind glorify isolated selves and exceptionals. The idea of heroes, of private, personal property, of selfishness and self-interest is as baffling and alien a concept to him as many of his base assumptions would be to humans. The fact that he's even on Earth over a private, individual feeling and idea rankles him, and frays his perfectionist's irritation and discomfort with a self that doesn't fit its ideals. He sees his duty in Solar space as partly therapeutic and partly investigatory, exorcising his aberrant mindset and expanding Lor information and projection about a possible future member. Powers & Tactics: Since he isn't licensed to use his mentat powers without supervision by local authorities, Dol-Druth has to limit his use of telekinesis on natives to temporary immobilization, and relies on his hard-earned people skills and access to billions of helpful minds to make a compelling case against violence for the less immediately hostile. Due in part to shortages and also a preference to experience the planet like its inhabitants do, the Speaker of Dotrae has no independent means of fast movement, forcing him occasionally to 'push' against the ground or 'latch' onto solid objects and fling himself through the air. His standard-issue stun-pistol is less restricted, but still only drawn in dire circumstances. Complications: Alien Nation: While reasonably up to date on what's happening on Earth, Dol-Druth has very little frame of reference for much of the planet's history and culture. Bow your head: Dol-Druth is easily annoyed and needled by people with strong senses of self and identity outside a group or society. I am not I: Dol-Druth is first and foremost the Speaker of Dotrae. His own wishes and opinions are secondary to the decisions and aggregate view of the manymind. If they think he should act or speak otherwise than he wants, he feels compelled to obey. May I?: As an alien and non-citizen of Solar space, Dol-Druth is sharply limited in what he is and is not allowed to do with his powers. Attacking without obvious cause, reading minds without express permission(from the authorities), and damaging Earthly property are only a few of his restrictions. Mental Malarkey: Like most mentats, Dol-Druth channels his will and connects his thoughts through the Astral Plane, and things affecting that dimension around Earth affect him much more heavily, since his mental 'door' is wide open in constant communication, unlike the more segregated minds of humans. 1=0: Used to thinking of things on planetary scales, Dol-Druth is wholly unused to the idea that individuals can be as important as whole nations to the locals. In Brief: Alien engineer who fused with a spaceship, becoming capable of controlling machines in the process. Alternate Identity: Vyrdnaya Solnys-Kori Milareth Identity: Public Birthplace: Aetol City, Planet Akarnia 05 Occupation: Former Engineer Private Praetorian of the Delaztri Empire Affiliations: Praetorians Family: Solnys Radamathon-Kuros Milareth (né Astart) (Father - Deceased), Somna Aethalom-Kori Milareth (Mother - Deceased), Frethyn Solnys-Kori Milareth (Older Sister - Deceased), Haradam Solnys-Kuros Milareth (Younger Brother - Deceased), Jihiskh Mavon-Kuros Milareth (né Ainour) (Husband - Deceased), Solmav Jihiskh-Kuros Milareth (Son - Deceased, 25), Tormug Jihiskh-Kuros Milareth (Son - Deceased, 15), Triinareti Jihisk-Kori Milareth (Daugther - Deceased, 17). Description: Age: 92 (DoB: Over 2'000 years ago) Apparent Age: 27 Gender: Female Ethnicity: Meso-Akarnian Height: 5'5" Weight: 260 lbs Eyes: Hazel Green (Organic), Red (Mechanic) Hair: Hazel Green Mater Vyrdna's body has been fused with random mechanical parts, with various patches of blue colored flesh serving as proof that she once had been a purely organic lifeform. Especially standing out, half side of her kneck, and the upper-left part of her head, are comprised of machinery, while her fin-like ears and her blue tail betray her heritage as an Akarnian, and a Meso-Akarnian at that. Her medium-lenght hair is coloured Hazel Green, same as her eyes, and it is tied in a knot. She dons a pair of glasses, mostly out of habit. Mater Vyrdna's form, and specifically, the mechanical parts of it, is often subject to change, depending on the situation, such as materialising wings, transforming her limbs into weapons, or even her entire body melding into an external machine. Power Descriptions: Mater Vyrdna can control machines. This includes, but is not limited to, reconfiguring and transforming machines at the merest touch, granting them sentience, and exerting mental control over them. These powers apply even to her own body, allowing her to shapeshift her limbs into rayguns, hammers, laser swords, rocket launchers, drills, etc. She is able to meld with machines, allowing her to transfer her body through them. Finally, she can directly communicate with machines. History: Vyrdnaya Solnys-Kori Milareth was born into a relatively wealthy family in the Akarnia Planet of the now long gone Delaztri Empire. Despite having had all comforts available to her, Vyrdnaya had nevertheless managed to grow into a responsible young woman, and through her studies, she quickly developed an interest in engineering. While she'd frequently have arguments with her parents, who were far too oldfashioned for her liking, she held them both dearly. After graduating from college, she decided to enlist in the Delaztri Empire's military, wishing to join the exalted ranks of the Praetorians. Unfortunately, she couldn't meet the recruitment standards for the Praetorian guard, and instead was enlisted as a regular military personel instead. Service in the military wasn't easy. An unfortunate short-lived affair with a fellow officer left her pregnant, and her parents, who weren't very supportive of her being a lowly military officer, forced her a choice; either marry Jihiskh Mavon-Kuros Ainour (an old university colleague of Vyrdnaya who was making rounds in the field of interconnectivity), or refuse to give her any further support, lest she decided to quit the military. Caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place, Vyrdnaya aqcuiesced to the marriage, after reaching an understanding with Jihiskh, who was also being forced to the marriage by his own parents. The marriage finalized, the two returned to pursuiting their respective careers, and Vyrdanya eventually gave birth to Solmav. Despite all setbacks, Vyrdnaya's engineering talent didn't take long to shine through, and she was being steadily promoted in rank, eventually becoming Lieutenant Commander. Things were also looking up for her, vis-a-vis her marriage, as Vyrdnaya and Jihiskh found themselves warming up to each other, and eventually falling in love. Their newfound relationship led to the births of Triinareti and Tormug, and the five enjoyed the next 15 years, not as strangers who happened to be together out of necessity and convenience, but out of love and understanding. During this time, Vyrdnaya was eventually transferred at the ship that she would serve, remaining there for three years, before the Communion attacked. During the climactic battle, the Warp Engine of the Delaztri ship was severly damaged. Vyrdnaya ordered the other engineering crewmembers to evacuate the engine room, while she stayed behind to ensure that it would remain operational. A sudden explosion caused the warp to go haywire, and Vyrdnaya got caught in the surge of energy that teleported her inside the fusion engine. This was a death sentence... or it should have been one. Instead, Vyrdnaya's body was infused with the ship, deep inside its engines, and her consiousness was left wandering the ship's network, with no way to escape or interract with the outside world. Until one day, the Praetorians, not long after being revived in the present, discovered a strange subroutine that was running in the background of their ship. Personality & Motivation: Back in the days of the Delaztri Empire, Vyrdnaya was a dreamer, an inquisitive mind accompanying an adventurous spirit. Though her wish to join the Praetorians was rejected, on account of her lacking the proper physical conditioning, she was nonetheless a steadfast member of the Delaztri Navy, and her engineering expertise helped her serve well in every vessel she was assigned. She loved her parents, even when they disagreed, and always made sure her children were happy. Her relationship with Jihiskh was a bit more complicated, were at times she wasn't sure if they were lovers or great friends. Nevertheless, the two were always there for each other, through thick and thin. This, sadly, is no more the case. The Delaztri Empire fell two millenias ago, and Vyrdnaya's body spent that time in hybernation, while her consiouness was trapped in a digitalized state, never to see her children grow, never to share a kiss with her husband again. This realization has been slowly seeping in her, and in order to cope, she has started treating the surviving Praetorians as family. The Communion has already costed her one; she is not gonna give up another family, not so long as she has a say on the matter. Powers & Tactics: Depending on the situation and the terrain, Mater Vyrdna has a versatile range of options in order to engage in combat. When faced with machinery and robotic enemies, she will try to override them via her mental connection to them. If that fails, or if she isn't up against machines, she can still control whatever machines are around her, transforming them, bending them to her will, or even absorbing them in order to use them as spare parts. Finally, if neither of those are readily available, she is still capable of transforming herself, creating a vast array of weapons to use at any range, and she is capable for various modes of transportation. Having said that, however, Mater Vyrdna is not without her weaknesses. Electromagnetism can cause her greater pain than the average person, thanks to her nervous system being fused with circuitous machinery. Additionally, prolonged exposure to Terminus Tech can prove fatal, due to causing her a cancerous reaction. Complications: Half Machine: Thanks to Vyrdnaya getting fused with the Delaztri Naval Ship, she is now a techo-organic being. Pain of Loss: Losing your entire family, including your husband and children, is an entirely traumatic experience. As a result, Vyrdnaya is doubly protective of those she cares for. Ghost in the Machine: Vyrdnaya's body can be disorienting for her to control, and there's a certain amount of disconnect she feels from it, despite still retainning organic parts. The Unchosen One: Unlike the other Praetorians, Vyrdnaya was never officially knighted, serving only as staff engineer for the Praetorian spacecraft. Her powers came much later. As such, she is rather uncofident, when it comes to operating outside her engineering specialization. I'm In the Ship; I Am the Ship: Vyrdnaya melding into machines often has the result of her consciousness joinning with whatever she is currently fusing with. She has great affinity and empathy for whatever she joins with. 13. Player Name: ShaenTheBrainCharacter Name: The Inspector Power Level: 12 (180/181PP) Trade-Offs: None Unspent Power Points: 1 Progress To Gold Status: 1/90 In Brief: Martian Manhunter with a lightsaber. Alternate Identity: Jol-Kroom Samak (Birth Name), Varies (Shapeshifter) Identity: Secret. It is not common or public knowledge that Samak is a Grue'tar, or an alien of any kind. Birthplace: Planet Gruen'tass, Andromeda Galaxy Occupation: None at present. Former Inquisitor of the Grue'tar Protectorate, then freelance bounty hunter, private detective, and mercenary throughout the Lor Republic and Stellar Khanate. Affiliations: None at present. Formerly the Grue'tar Protectorate. Family: Jol-Kroom Rojoss (Mother), Jol-Kroom Mooreedon (Father), Jol-Kroom Serta (Brother) DESCRIPTION In his native form, Samak is a blue-skinned humanoid with no body hair. His head is round on top, and his jaw extends to a long, narrow point. He has no nose, mouth, or teeth. He breathes through his skin. His skin is selectively permeable to fluids. When he drinks, the bottom half of his face, where a human's mouth would be, darkens in color and softens in texture, allowing him to absorb the water. He has digitigrade legs, which end in feet with two toes. His hands have two large fingers, and two thumbs on opposite sides of the hand (allowing him to grip objects more firmly than single-thumbed creatures). There is no way he would be mistaken for a human in any but the vaguest of silhouettes against the dimmest of light. Age: 300 (DoB: 1713)Apparent Age: N/A (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) Gender: Born Male (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) Ethnicity: Grue'tar Height: 6ft (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) Weight: 180 lbs. (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) Eyes: Orange (No Pupils) (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) Hair: None (Varies with Morph/Shapeshift) POWER DESCRIPTIONS The Grue'tar are an innately psionic race. Samak's more powerful psionic abilities are only accessible when his brain is in its native configuration. Unless he chooses to suppress it, Samak's psionic powers create a slight glowing aura around his head and/or hands, and sometimes the target as well. The color of that aura varies, depending on the application of the powers. Telekinetic effects which move or manipulate physical objects will usually glow blue, while those which inflict physical harm usually glow red. Telepathic effects usually create a violet aura. The energy blade of his Star Sword follows the same color scheme. The Star Sword itself is a handle assembled from pieces forged from a nearly indestructible self-repairing alloy functionally identical to Impervium. It has been inscribed with psychic runes in the Grue'tar language, which further reinforce its structure. It contains a psycho-reactive crystal, functionally identical to the substance known on Earth as "Daka Crystal," which focuses and amplifies the wielder's magical or psionic energy into a blade which appears with a thought and glows as brightly as the Sun. Like any other Grue'tar, Samak's physical healing ability comes from his shapeshifting, which in turn is merely an alternate manifestation of his psionic abilties. He uses telekinesis, consciously or reflexively, to re-arrange his own molecules. When Samak uses his bio-telekinetic shapeshifting ability, his flesh ripples like water and molds itself like soft clay. The "clothes" he creates with his Morph ability are analogous to human hair and fingernails. They grow from his body, but they are mostly dead, and can be painlessly shed like a reptile's skin once their usefulness had ended. Even in his native form, his eyes tend to glow slightly, and both his eyes and skin tend to change color in reaction to his emotional state. If his shapeshifting requires him to gain or lose mass, then he expends psionic energy to fuel mitosis of his own cells, or he consumes his own cells to gain psionic energy. One half of the Grue'tar brain is "asleep" at any given point in time, allowing them to stay awake all the time. Most Grue'tar use the time that other creatures spend sleeping to join the shared psychic link with the rest of their race, or to reflect upon the experiences captured in their memory stones. The Grue'tar share their red-skinned brethren's ability to drain neural energy, but they abandoned this trait as a "food" source long ago, preferring to only use it as a weapon or interrogation device against other races. Instead, they used their shapeshifting abilities to become photosynthetic. They absorb ultraviolet rays from the stars in the sky. In turn, they developed the ability to see ultraviolet light, so that they could better keep track of their "food source," and so that they could function on a rogue planet with no "sunrise," only an enternal starry night. HISTORY Eons ago, the Grue of a single star system in the Empire managed to break free from the grasp of the Meta-Mind. These rogue Grue fled the Milky Way galaxy, eventually settling on a rogue planet in the (relatively) neighboring Andromeda. They christened this planet "Gruen'tass," The New World of The Free People, and re-christened themselves the "Grue'tar," or "Free People." They even changed the pigmentation of their own flesh and blood, to distinguish themselves from their former oppressor. (Other races who deal with them often refer to them as "Blue Grue," though never while the Grue'tar are present.) Out from under the Meta-Mind's control, the Grue'tar developed a new culture, emphasizing a balance between the collective good and the individual desires and sense of self. Every Grue'tar works toward the greater good of their people, but in their own chosen way, and not at the expense of their individuality. Instead, the people use their innate psionic powers to regularly create a temporary, voluntary communal psychic link with each other, renewing their connection to one another and drawing on each others strength. Outside of the link, every Grue'tar is encouraged to develop their own aptitudes, personality, and appearance. Unfortunately for their new neighbors, the Grue'tar grew just as expansionist and xenophobic as the Grue Empire they fled. Acting partially out of fear and greed, and partially out of a misguided, patronizing desire to "protect" the "lesser races" (both from outside threats and from their own inferior selves), the Grue'tar established an interstellar "Protectorate." In practice, the "mind-blind solids" are alternately exploited and ignored more than they are "protected" or "nurtured," and most of them were not given the choice of whether or not to "join" in the first place. Jol-Kroom Samak was a member of the Inquisition, the primary investigative body of the Protectorate government. He had a natural talent for investigation, both forensic and psychic, impeccable integrity, and an innate desire to help and protect those weaker and less fortunate than himself. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that he would bring great honor and glory to his family and race. It came as an unprecedented shock when he proved everyone wrong by betraying that family, that race, and everything they stood for. Samak's brother, Jol-Kroom Serta, had secured a position at the right hand of Karloom, the Gruetar governor of the Sobann system. The natives of Sobann had formed a rebellion against Gruetar rule, but the Sobann system contained rich deposits of the psychically reactive minerals humans call "Daka crystals," which were vital to Grue'tar technology. That technology was far superior to anything to which the Sobann natives had access, but like any other race, their numbers were superior to those of the chronically infertile Grue'tar. Even with psychically-controlled robot legions bolstering the Grue'tar numbers, the Sobann rebels were slowly but surely winning the war. Samak was called in to find out why, selected both because of his familial connection and his exceptional competence. It was those very qualities which made it so surprising when Samak, bribed and seduced by one of the rebel leaders, betrayed and murdered both of his fellow Grue'tar, leading directly to the Grue'tar loss of control over the Sobann system. Conflict and violence between Grue'tar was a taboo, but as with any other race made up of individuals, it did happen. Treason against the Protectorate was another matter. And violence between family members, in a race where the most exceptionally fecund of mated pairs might have a handful of children in a millenium, was almost unthinkable. By killing his brother and dishonoring himself, Samak wiped out the entire next generation of the Jol-Kroom family in one moment. As if his actions were not already horrifying enough, Samak even used his psionic powers to rip Serta and Karloom's imprints free from their memory stones. Their accumulated memories could not even be uploaded to the psychic Grue'tar gestalt. No one would ever benefit from their experiences; it would almost be as if they had never existed. Despite his efforts to cover up his obscene crimes, Samak was caught, and returned to Gruen'tass for judgement. Since his actions were so unprecedentedly vile, a full investigation was conducted. But all mind probes, and all examinations of both his memory stone and what little physical evidence remained, confirmed Samak's confession. It was decided that death was not punishment enough for his actions. Instead, Samak was condemned to The Void (known to humans as "the Zero Zone"). He would drift forever, unable to die, and cut off from the nourishing union with the minds of his fellow Grue'tar. They even sent him with his memory stone and his star sword, so that he could not lose himself in madness, and to emphasize the hopelessness of his situation by showing him how useless his powers and weapons would be from that day forward. It was only after he had been cast into The Void, only after he accessed the true memory stone he had hidden inside his own body, that Samak remembered what truly happened. Samak did learn the truth behind the success of the Sobann rebellion, when Karloom's mercenaries captured Thorgav, one of the Sobann rebel leaders. To spare Thorgav from interrogation and torture, Serta set her free, killing Karloom in the process. It had been Serta who was been feeding information to the Sobann rebels and sabotaging the Grue'tar conquest. Serta had fallen in love with Thorgav, and through his repeated telepathic connections with her, he had been swayed to her cause. Samak shared his brother's capacity for compassion, even for mind-blind solids, and did not personally approve of the treatment of the Sobann at the hands of the Grue'tar. He was fiercely loyal to his brother. He never would have committed his brother's treason, but he resolved to take the blame for it, and build a new life for his brother outside the Protectorate. It was indeed Samak who had cleansed the memory stones, but he did not murder his brother. (He did slice off his brother's arm, so that the Inquisition would assume he had killed Serta, but it grew back.) He used his psionic powers to erase his brother's very memory of being a Grue'tar, instead convincing both him and Thorgav that he was a Sobann mutant, fabricating for him an entire new life entrenched in the Sobann rebellion. After backing up his memories of the truth in a secret memory stone, he even seized control of his brother's mental powers and used them like a tool to perform psychic surgery on himself, replacing his own memories of the true events with his fiction of treason and murder. (Had the other Grue'tar known of his feat, they would have been as impressed as they were horrified.) Samak did not ask permission from Serta or his lover before altering their memories and setting them loose upon their new lives. He simply made the decision, and acted upon it, in typical Grue'tar fashion. Samak spent a century floating through the physical and psychic isolation of the Zero Zone, and the experience almost broke him. The Terminus Invasion of Earth in 1993 weakened dimensional barriers all across the multiverse, and created a crack in the Zero Zone which Samak was able to slip through. When he was finally free, dumped into the Milky Way, he unleashed a psychic scream which echoed throughout that galaxy and its neighbors, including the Magellanic Clouds...and Andromeda. Not every magically or psionically active individual felt it, but many of them did. The Grue'tar seers were alerted to the fact that the Great Traitor had escaped his prison, and the Grue Meta-Mind was alerted to the return of one of its wayward children. For the next couple of decades, Samak wandered around the Milky Way, acting as a private detective, bounty hunter, and mercenary, who specialized in rooting out and destroying Grue agents. Knowing firsthand the paranoia the Grue inspire, he made sure to guard his true nature carefully (with memory wipes, if necessary), and to never stay in one place for long. He worked off and on for both the Lor Republic and the Stellar Khanate. His attention was recently drawn to Earth by the Grue Empire's repeated invasion attempts. The more he learned, or tried to learn, about the pale blue dot at the edge of the spiral, the more it intrigued him. It was listed as a “nature preserve†and “developing world,†hardly worthy of mention, yet almost all information about it was classified “Top Secret†by the Lor government. After studying what little information he could acquire (not all of it acquired "legitimately"), Samak decided to adopt the appearance and methods of a "superhero," so as to better blend in. On his own world, he had been known as an “Inquisitor,†but on Earth, he would adopt a more benign title for one who brings secrets to light and finds that which is lost or hidden: “Inspector.†PERSONALITY & MOTIVATION Samak is only starting to realize that he embodies one of the worst flaws of his species. His compassion and his thirst for justice are formidable, but they is tangled up with a subtly patronizing lack of respect for the ability of others to make their own decisions. His solution for his brother's situation may have ultimately been the best one, but he didn't bother to ask for his brother's input before altering the path of his entire life. Some people may come to trust him, but first he'll have to give them the chance to, instead of deciding for them that they're better off not remembering him at all. He was alone for so long that he has forgotten how to not be alone. His manner tends to be laconic and reserved; most of the time, he prefers to avoid notice. He is a scholar at heart, and an appeal to his inquisitive mind is probably the key to drawing him out. POWERS & TACTICS Samak is a surgeon, not a blunt instrument. He prefers to observe the unfolding situation from concealment, and then to strike suddenly at one critical moment or one key foe to turn the tide of the entire battle. He is pragmatic and flexible, altering his tactics (and his own body) to match his foe or the terrain, engaging them at range or in melee, with his sword or his mind, whichever approach will exploit his foe's weakness and maximize his own advantage. COMPLICATIONS Alien: Samak is an alien in every sense of the word. He is subject to all of the usual inherent Complications of being a stranger in a strange land. He has only a passing familiarity with the people of Earth or their customs. However, because of his Disability (Grue) drawback, he should not gain any Hero Points for being considered a "Grue" for the purposes of certain power effects. Enemies: Samak is a hated enemy of two entire races of people: The Grue Empire of the Milky Way, and the Grue'tar Protectorate of Andromeda, both of whom know that he has escaped from the Zero Zone into the Milky Way. Feedback: Samak already has this flaw on his Mind Reading powers, so he shouldn't get any Hero Points when it comes into play (either because the subject was hurt or because he accessed a particularly intense memory). But the potential exists for other powers, such as his Mind Control, Postcognition, and/or Precognition, to cause the same "Feedback." He could receive a Hero Point if, for example, a particularly intense or traumatic past or future event causes him physical Damage. Infamy: Grue are mind-altering, shape-shifting psychic vampires who have repeatedly tried to take over the world. They are walking paranoia fuel. Samak has no illusions about the reception he would receive from anyone familiar with his "cousins," no matter what color his skin happens to be. Mind Control: If the GM doesn't want a use of the Mind Control power to be an all-or-nothing proposition, they can give Samak a Hero Point and make the Mind Control work as a staged effect. Here is an example: STAGINGFail by 1+: Dazed (You can take no actions, but you suffer no defense penalties). Fail by 5+ (or Fail by 1+ twice): Compelled (You can take no actions, and your controller can force you to perform one standard or move action per round). Fail by 10+ (or Fail by 5+ twice): Controlled (You can take no actions, and your controller can force you to perform any actions, up to your usual allotment). Power Loss: Lead: Lead blocks Grue'tar mental powers, such as Mental Communication, ESP, Mind Control, and Mind Reading. The GM can give Samak a Hero Point when the subject he attempts to communicate with is on the other side of a lead barrier, or if he attempts to use his mental powers on a foe who is wearing a lead-lined mask or helmet. Star Sword: Obviously, since it receives the Device discount on the cost, Samak will not gain any Hero Points if his Star Sword is taken from him. It is Indestructible, so he should receive a Hero Point if it is damaged or destroyed. Since the strength of the blade (the ranks of the attack powers) varies from one wielder to another, a foe who steals it from him and uses it against him may give him a Hero Point by accessing a higher powe rank than Samak himself can. Alternately, a comrade could get a complication for not being able to access as many power ranks as Samak can. Zeroed: Samak has no legal identity, financial history, or even a consistent appearance. On paper, he doesn't exist anywhere. He does not enjoy the protections of any laws, and no one would miss him if he was abducted or murdered.
