  1. Vibora Bay January 2020 Lavelle, WInifred's Uber driver took her as far as her GPS allowed, deep into the San Sebastian Swamp just to the north of Vibora Bay. It was hard to believe how close they were to a major city here, with even the skyscrapers of Vibora's highest points lost amid bare mangrove trees and pine forests that seemed to go on forever once you'd been inside them more than a few minutes. It was colder than Florida had been described to Fred; not quite a London spring outside but certainly nothing she'd have wanted to spend very much time in. "Welp, here we are!" The road had converted to gravel some time back, and the tires of the old black van rumbled slightly as they parked. GROCERIES declared the sign on the store that Fred's knowledge of architecture told her was built in the "Carpenter Gothic" style. There were only a few cars in the lot, and the odd dirtbikle which made sense given what she'd heard from Smith of the local travel conditions. "They don't get many folks here in the off-season, but you should be able to get some lunch if'n ya want it," said Lavelle, a cheerful woman in overalls and cap who looked old enough to be Fred's grandmother. Well, looked, anyway. "Ah'm sure yer friend'll be here, we just ran a little early on account of the bridge being open sooner than Ah thought." She cleared her throat meaningfully at that.
  2. November 28, 2019 The voice on the municipal defender line is short, to the point, and familiar. "This is Woodsman. I need a municipal defender in Cluet Farms at 304 Polk Boulevard. Come quickly. Do not bring first responders. Not safe."
  3. City Hall, Vibora Bay. September 5th, 2019. Noon. In a conference room just down the hall from the mayor's office, seven very unique individuals were gathering around a long table in comfortable chairs. Coffee and bagels had been provided by the mayor's staff, but several of the heroes of Hurricane Dorian craved more substantial fare, so a take-out menu for the Mediterranean place next door led to the room now being full of the smell of seasoned lamb and other savory delicacies. While the food did indeed smell delicious to young Taye Sullivan. So while the others were splitting up the various meats, rice and breads, she poured herself a cup of hot water and took a seat. "It's indeed exciting to have the opportunity to work with you all again," she said in her clear, deep voice as she fished two clear Ziploc bags out of her coverall pockets; one appeared to hold a few pieces of rusted metal, the other several spark plugs. "Of course, last night's work largely took place in the heat of the moment, with little or no planning. it will be interesting to see how we work together when we have more time to talk about things like strategy or logistics." Taye gingerly took several pieces of rust out of the bag and carefully crumbled them into her hot water, which she then stirred with a plastic spoon. "Perhaps we should first take the time to talk about our abilities, strengths and weaknesses before we go any further? As of right now, I am primarily limited to assuming vehicular shapes, but I hope to move beyond that by testing myself further." She took a sparkplug out of her second bag, popped it in her mouth, and washed it down with a sip of rust tea, all the while looking at the others expectantly.
  4. September 4, 2019 Vibora Bay, Florida 11PM It's a dark and stormy night. This sort of thing happens a lot in Florida. As Dorian rolled up on the east coast of Florida like God's own judgement, the people of Vibora Bay remembered Michael last year and took action. Some people left, some people stayed home, and everyone mourned all those lovely tourist dollars that _could_ have come the city's way during the ruined Labor Day weekend. As it is, by all accounts Vibora is going to come through this one better than people feared. Having spent his wrath against the east coast, Dorian is rain, lightning, and high winds, but not the near-apocalypse that was last fall's city-wrecking storm. On the other hand, that's bad enough! Six inches of rain and high winds closed the schools and universities today, and most businesses shut down too. Mayor Barker (who weathered the last storm with flying colors) was on Channel 7 last night to tell the citizens of Vibora to be ready for anything. They have to be, because nobody's going anywhere with all this rain. The traffic's always bad in the Panhandle though, especially on the spur that takes you up to the big west-east Interstate 10, so people in Walton County have a lot of experience with sheltering in place. People facing floods have moved into city-run shelters - many public buildings are full of people. Red Cross workers and other volunteers are on the scene - though most of them are actually out of town helping with the aftereffects of Dorian further east. Many streets are impassable, the beaches are closed, and rescue crews and emergency personnel are on high alert. Things are bad - but not quite hero bad. The last you heard, Siren went east to help with the aftermath of the storm there - it's just the hometown heroes on the scene today. Around 11 o'clock at night, just as trusty local weatherman Tom Bonilla appeared on your screens to give you the latest tracking information on Dorian, there's a tremendous flash of lightning and clap of thunder that booms across the metropolis - and from Seagrove to Rosemary Beach, the city's power goes dark. - The University of Florida - Vibora Bay Outside Gibbs Residence Hall "Go to Hell!" In the rain and lightning, two men were yelling at each other in the shelter of the brick patio in front of the old residence hall. "So you've been down here this whole time, spying on me!?" Riley was shouting at his double, heedless in his anger of the other's physical prowess. "I told you before - I do not need your help! I never will!" "...fine." Riley didn't shout back at his double, he didn't even punch him in the face. He turned and walked away, pulling up his poncho as sheets of rain cascaded down onto him, the winds so strong he felt them buffet him as he walked out onto the campus parking lot where he'd stashed his bike. It wasn't good biking weather but if you knew what you were doing and could see in the dark, you could get through fine - even dodge the cops if you took the backroads. Good thing the roads to the swamp hadn't actually flooded yet. Riley got on his bike, grabbed the handlebars - and closed his eyes for a long, hard moment. No. No, hell, no, I am not going to do that. He opened them again and revved his engine with a rumble so deep he could feel it between his legs far more than he heard it. If he was going to get back home, he needed to leave right now. He clicked on his headlamp - and suddenly, there was a flash of light in the sky, and a deep boom, and the campus streetlights winked out. Adjusting his shoulder bag, Riley permitted himself a sigh.
  5. So we've got our first four VB PCs approved, and hopefully more to come soon. Any ideas what kinds of stories we want to tell? I for one am very intrigued by the swamp just North of town.
  6. Woodsman Power Level: 10/13 (190/194PP) Unspent Power Points: 4 Trade-Offs: +4 ATK/-4 DMG, +4 DEF/-4 TOU Identity: Secret Alternate Identity: Riley Smith Birthplace: Freedom City, NJ Legal Status: American citizen with no criminal record Base of Operations: San Sebastian Swamp, Vibora Bay Residence: Vibora Bay, FL Occupation: Survivalist Affiliations: The Misfits Family: Riley's only surviving family is his 'brother', the other Riley - a student at the University of Florida Vibora Bay Age: 20 (DOB: September 1, 1999) Gender: Male Species: Human Height: 5'7" Weight: 150 lbs Skin: Dark Hair: Shaved, naturally dark Eyes: Brown Character History: Once there was a boy born in a dying world where the greatest heroes had become the greatest monsters and where surviving day-to-day was a victory. The world made him harder and sharper, making him grow up far too fast by the standards of a normal place and time. When he crossed over to our world it seemed like liberation for him. A chance to go to a real school, to make real friends, to finally get those hormone treatments he'd always dreamed about that were far beyond the reach of his post-apocalyptic community. But it didn't quite work out that way. He found friends, even his first real girlfriend, and learned that superhumans weren't necessarily his enemy. But he never quite fit in, even among friends who weren't exactly the shining examples of perfection that many of his classmates were. The stink of his homeworld never seemed to leave him, inside and out, and sometimes he'd drive them away because he felt better about that. Then came the end of his schooling and it all fell apart - the people he loved almost lost everything because a bunch of killers were interested in him for his ability to kill, and his best girl lost her arm because of an order he gave. And his mother, who he thought he'd never see again, they embraced one last time before she returned to try and save the last survivors of a dying world. Then his other mother, the one who'd opened her home to him despite his anger and his violence, who'd shown him nothing but love when he didn't deserve it - she was torn to pieces by a monster from Hell even as his home burned to ashes around her. This last thing, this was too much. With a little help from Midnight and Wander, Riley Smith got on his bike after the Terminus Invasion of 2018 and he drove away - far down south, down to places like home where nature butted up against civilization. Down to places where he could forget what had happened, just for a little while. But sometimes there's no forgetting the past. That's the lesson of Vibora Bay. He lives in a small house in the middle of San Sebastian Swamp, a former hunter's cabin he fixed up after the hurricane. He supports himself with part-time jobs as a mechanic and bare-knuckle fighter down in the city. But what comes next? Physical Description: Riley Smith is short for a man but muscular, built like a welterweight boxer, and carries himself with an easy, natural athleticism. He still shaves his head every morning but has grown a goatee that's come in dark and thick. He wears jeans, button-up shirts, and boots most of the time, even when he's on his own - which he usually is. Stripped to the waist, he has a series of impressive scars on his chest covered by a tattoo of the word FREE in big black letters. Woodsman wears a baseball cap, balaclava, poncho, and matching outfit - he has colors for urban, arboreal, and night-time operations. He could be anybody but there's no way to know for sure. He wears black greasepaint around his eyes while in costume. Powers and Tactics: Woodsman doesn't like to fight - really! (most of his bare-knuckle fights aren't really fights at all in his experience) When he does get into fights they're fast and brutal. He'll start with an ambush, snipe from a distance, use cover, and won't otherwise hesitate to fight dirty. This is especially true if he's fighting powered opponents. He'll particularly seek to make opponents confused, frightened, and ready to surrender before he does something worse to them. Fighting fair is something corpses do in his experience. Personality and Motivation: Riley is grieving - grieving for a lost world and a lost family, and for opportunities lost that he didn't really know he had. Sometimes Riley feels so much older than his twenty - he's seen more and done more than most normal men twice his age. He wants to have a normal life but he doesn't really think that's possible. He wants to help other people but he thinks about the consequences of his 'heroism' every time he closes his eyes and sees the place where Nighthawk's arm used to be, or what happened to his mother, or a million other things. He's not the hero his friends turned out to be. Riley is a transman - top surgery, no bottom. (There's no money for that, anyway.) He'll occasionally slip down to a pride parade or some similar event in Vibora Bay. He'd like to have a girlfriend but he knows he hurts everyone he touches _and_ he's a disgusting castaway, so why bother? Complications: Family Ties: Riley's only living family is his brother, a college student in Vibora Bay. The two aren't close - especially since the other Riley blames this one for bringing the super world to their front door... Friends On The Other Side: Despite himself, Riley has some very interesting friends. Ghosts of the Past: The past is still very much with Riley. Monster I Am: Riley knows what he is and he doesn't like it. Pay Those Bills: Riley does not have much money left. Seriously?: Black and trans, Riley is a double minority. Those Monsters: Riley's views of creatures from, or influenced by, the Terminus is not a high one. Similarly he'll shoot a talking animal by reflex. Never know what they're planning. 7. January 2, 2018 On the last day of Raina Sanderson's last day of Christmas vacation at Claremont Academy, she got a text from her monkey. Merlin had been increasingly agitated over the last few days, for reasons that he swore had nothing to do with the monkey-sized Christmas sweater that he'd gotten from the floor Christmas present pool. It couldn't have anything to do with the temperature - Cathy was off on a date, or some sort of mystery, with Phaedra, which had left him master of the room while Raina was outside. The text said FOUND BIG THING. TROUBLE. With only three emojis, all of them from the "Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, See No Evil" series, this was an unusually restrained message. NEED TO SHOW YOU.
  8. It seemed there was still some measure of justice in the world, despite all evidence to the contrary in the life of one Raina Sanderson recently of Claremont Academy. Winterfold was THE underground sensation of the decade, at the least of the moment and really that mattered far more in the cutthroat world of high school. The exclusive concert experience was renowned equally for it's rumored a-list guest list as much as it was for it's unique and secretive musical stylings. In a world where every up and coming band flooded the streaming sites with samples, concert footage, and behind the scenes not so exclusives, Winterfold was an enigma, allowing no recordings, publishing only rare stills of energized crowds in packed small venue or pop up concert halls. Top celebutantes would hint at having seen a show, breathlessly describing the scene in vibrant glowing praise before obliquely adding ,"Or so the rumors go." a small nod to the secretive groups mystique. So the fact that Raina had just won an exclusive invitation for herself and a few friends was to say the least good fortune. And better than that, none of those snobs from Next-Gen had gotten anywhere near it despite best efforts of fame, wealth, or 'harmless' exploitation of powers. This was social gold for any teen. With the concert venue in riverside and her own access only revealed the day of the event she had scant time to gather her friends and soon they found themselves before the doors of the small riverside dancehall with the other elite guests. The doorman checked her against a small delightfully vintage printed list and swung the door open slowly granting them entry to a vestibule where another fit young man stood waiting to collect any and all electronic devices before they'd be granted entry.
  9. GM Cabin buried deep within Wharton Forest Wharton Forest, New JerseySunday, November 15th, 2015 3:20 AM Living in a national forest was to be a nomadic affair. It was prohibited by law to build permanent structures for the use of residence within. Of course, that didn't mean it was impossible to grease the wheels a little here and there. Especially for a cabin buried so deep within that no reasonable person should be able to find it. But, the Woodsman was far from reasonable. Following the general direction he had threatened out of a lackey, he easily combed every inch of the forest until he found Brasswell's cabin. The cabin itself had a very rustic appearance. The inside full of modern amenities and comforts, but lacking anything that could even be written off as threatening. Even looking inside it hardly looked like the sort of place a drug kingpin would hide out in. It was put simply nothing more than a home, at a glance The Woodsman skulked about the perimeter waiting for an opportunity to sneak inside unseen. After ensuring there were no traps waiting for him outside the youth did just that. Once inside a quick visual scan revealed that there was a man in his mid fifties sitting in a living room, his back turned to the Woodsman, having fallen asleep watching television. Just outside of the cabin. A few inches away from the door was Grim. His directions from the young man he helped passed on where more direct. But, that still left him as the second teen hero to arrive on the scene. Taking just long enough that he had missed Riley sneaking inside.
  10. And here we are. Not quite initiative time yet. As the recruitment thread mentioned, I'm playing fast and loose with plot type things. The building's on fire, you're on the second floor but unaware until you glance out a window of the room you're in, and there's some other folks in there somewhere. How'd you get here? Who knows? Well, I do, but that's for wrapping up. The other person in the room is, well, the PC who isn't yours. If that's unclear. Involuntary training simulation, away... Should probably hold onto these... Burning Swordmaster Archer Paragon
  11. The building was on fire, and it wasn’t Facsimile’s fault. It wasn’t Woodsman’s fault, either. Just to set the record straight. The two weren’t sure of a lot of things. Like how they’d gotten inside a burning office building. What floor they were on (spoiler: the second of three). And, oh right, exactly who was the other one in the room (that was just a little on fire). What the two young heroes were sure of is that the building wasn’t empty besides them, there weren’t any sirens to be heard, and above all, there was something slightly…off, about everything. It was like the idea of a burning building from someone who’d never actually been in one.
  12. June 4, 2017 The rails out of Greenbank might not have run trains out to Goldman Quarry anymore but that didn't mean the abandoned hole in the ground never saw visitors. At some point in the early aughts a Claremont student who's name had been lost to the annals of high school history had hit upon the quarry as a good place to test out powers a little too destructive for supervised sessions in the Doom Room and the location had been passed from rebel to loner to misunderstood problem child. Every few years the faculty had reason to make it clear that students were to stay well away from the quarry but those who made use of it tended to prefer asking forgiveness rather than permission anyway. At least that's how Riley had explained it to Winifred after they'd begun searching for somewhere to test the new explosives they'd been tinkering with in the chemistry lab. "You're sure you know where you're going?" the alchemist shouted over the noise of the wind, seated behind the survivalist on his motorcycle. They'd already driven clear across the length of the city from Bayview but she still hadn't decided which was the more terrifying conveyance between Smith's bike and Sanderson's flying broomstick.
  13. September 2017 Riverside Marsha's In a perfect world, the experience of one sort of discrimination would prevent other forms of discrimination. But then a perfect world wouldn't need superheroes. Of the bars, bookstores, and cafes of Freedom City's gayborhood in Riverside, Marsha's was one of the few that catered particularly to LGBT people of color. From Sylvia Rivera on one wall to Bayard Rustin on the other, with shelves of LGBT books on one side and a coffee bar with nearby stage on the other, it had the homey atmosphere of a long-attended, long-populated neighborhood establishment. There was a smooth jazz quartet on stage this afternoon as a growing crowd filled in. It was Poetry Night and the coffee was hot, the biscuits were warm, and it was going to be one hell of a night. Riley Quinn-Smith shifted uncomfortably in his seat, fighting the urge to adjust the black fedora he wore on his carefully-shaved head. His years on Earth-Prime had gotten him used to crowds of strangers, and he had to admit he liked seeing the faces of so many people who, like him, were a little less than whitebread when it came to who they dated. It was what was on the agenda for later that made him uneasy. "This is stupid," he finally whispered to the other boy across the table from him. To the other Riley. The other Riley was skinnier and softer at the same moment, in a black suit and tie that made him contrast slightly with Riley's own purple-plaid shirt and jacket. His goatee was a little thicker and he had a mustache, but the resemblance was striking enough to instantly peg them as brothers. Of course the reality was, they were more than brothers. Duplicates across dimensions, who'd worked out at least some of their differences in the last two years. "This is stupid," hissed the Riley who was uneasy in his seat. "Nobody's gonna give a damn." "It's not stupid," said the other Riley, a look of confidence on a dark face that was rounder than his counterpart's but whose eyes were no less intelligent. The noise of the crowd and the music was already such that nobody was giving them a second look. "We wait till it's darker and everybody's watching the show, you swing in and do your thing. Show 'em the T in LGBT." "Nobody's gonna give a damn," Riley muttered, staring into his coffee. "Shoulda gone out with Robin tonight..."
  14. Here's the OOC. Give me a DC 20 Notice check and a DC 20 Sense Motive check, Little Jo. Riley's Skill Mastery is such that he easily passes the first but fails the second!
  15. GM Thursday, April 13th, 2017 Claremont Academy, Bayview, Freedom City 12:31 PM Some of Claremont’s students fit in better than others. There were some who almost entirely disappeared, who didn’t get much attention from anybody beyond their direct circle. There were some that were (in)famous around the entire school grounds. And there were some who, simply through their appearance, stood out. Jann Fa-Re was one of the latter. And even if he hadn’t sported feathers for hair, and huge wings on his back, there’d be a fair share of school-wide attention on him. Rumours, gossip, stuff only said behind his back. He was out on the grass training at almost any time, during all kinds of weather (some rumours about him doing it a 4 AM during a snow storm had been spreading around the school earlier this year). Added onto that the fact he had scars all across his body (and added more seemingly by the week), and his general friend circle, and most people didn’t quite know what to think of him. And more rumours started brewing, when during the lunch period, he approached another one of the teens known all around the campus. Riley Smith. “Hey. Heard you are the most skilled hunter here, correct?”
  16. Gizmo

Beneath Claremont Academy 8:42 AM July 10, 2017 By design the impervium cell was nearly empty. The front wall was transparent due to a process that Winifred would have usually been much more interested to learn about and the cube was large enough to pace about comfortably but the only furniture was a smooth bench large enough to also serve as a bed, constructed from the same material as the walls. There was a television set outside the transparent wall, featuring rather clever motion controls so as to forego the need of a remote control but the young alchemist didn't want it even for the white noise just then. Instead she sat on the bench beside the pillow she'd brought with her, wearing the oversized flannel shirt she'd adopted as sleepwear. She hugged her legs against her chest and pressed her face into her knees, letting out a long, weary sigh as she continued silently reciting the elements.
  17. GM Claremont Academy, Headmistress's Office Approximately 4:30pm, May 18, 2017 Four students had been called into Headmistress Summer's office, by way of notes handed over quietly early in the day (so as not to raise a fuss about the matter): Riley Smith, Winifred Wei, Matthew Rivera, and Raina Sanderson. Miss Summers sat behind her desk, typing away as the students filed in, a couple of quick clicks closing whatever she'd worked on, before she turned and faced the students. She sat back in her chair, folding her hands in her lap as she calmly regarded each of them for several moments. "To begin, understand that none of you are in trouble. Instead, this is me presenting you all with an opportunity for...let's call it something of a work-study program. I believe that, between your individual skills and your friendships with each other, you are well-suited to this task. I can't make you do this particular assignment, but you all do have hours and credits and the like to finish, so if it's not this particular assignment, it will be another. And unfortunately, I can't guarantee another opportunity that's as..." She paused and thought over her words for a moment, apparently quite conscious of some of the strong personalities in the room. "I can't guarantee you won't end up being forced to complete an assignment while working with one or more fellow students you do not get along well with. And don't think your companion's skills would let you bypass this requirement, Miss Sanderson; I'd know if he tried. Still, I have faith you all will be interested in this particular project."
  18. GM 10:27 PM, July 12th, 2017 Center For Disease Control and Development: Atlanta, Georgia Most of the time, epidemiology needed to be public in order to work properly. People needed to be made aware of the disease. They needed to be educated on what they could do to prevent it. Public awareness was one of the greatest tools in the arsenal of epidemiology. This was not one of those times. "We don't know what's causing this?" Hyperactive looked at the "vector" as it banged against the glass. He was working on his second two liter bottle of Dr. Pepper. This was gonna be a long night. "No and we felt that it was better to get some support before heading out into the field." Replied Dr. Yang, the epidemiologist in charge of the crisis. "President Cahill has you on his list of heroes to call when we find ourselves up a creek without a paddle." "Sure, this is exactly what I signed on for. I'm gonna call in a little help, I promise they'll be discreet." Hyperactive was already feeling well out of his depth here. He grabbed his phone and hammered out two quick messages. "Woodsman, have a situation that may require some stealth and discretion. I think you may be able to help here. I have a situation in Georgia. I can pick you up." The scatterbrained Speedster sent. "Mr. Daggers. Names Hyperactive. Druid gave me your number. Got a situation in Georgia, could use some help. Drop your location, I can be there, fast." "Give me a few moments to retrieve some friends Doctor." Hyperactive said as he waited for a reply.

  20. Friday, May 26th 3:40PM Main Lawn, Claremont Academy Team Industrial Light and Magic were under a tree, reading and studying. Besides her book back, the tall blonde had brought a bag of snacks as well as her hedgehog Percival, though he was curled up in a pocket. She was sprawled, wearing a a vintage AC/DC 'Thunderstruck' t-shirt under her acid washed coverall shorts, and a pair of floral tights underneath, her sandals off to the side. A book in hand, as the other held an apple that she was munching on. She had recently dyed her hair, making it an admix of faded blonde and pink. After some time she sets the book down, carefully on her chest, over the pocket where her hedgie was, and she lifted her head up to look at Hannah. "Do you ever look at the science textbooks, and just say 'Well I violate this law. And this law, and this law... Are they just guidelines more than rules?' Because I am having that right now." Hannah's roomie was often taking these little asides. And she was still fulfilling her efforts to drag Hannah outside as often as their schedules permitted, even if it was just coffee or smoothie runs.
